Devo was once signed to a record label called Stiff Records. They had some of the best artists signed to their label!! There are a couple of playlists on UA-cam and Spotify with the music from Stiff, I highly recommend giving some of their songs a listen!
Takes me back to my high school days and dances and good times with great friends. Thanks for this one, I always appreciate when the young people start to listen to the greeat music from my youth, it gives me hope.
The song is actually about aerobics. It was Aerobic fever at the time. I remember Bob and Bob in an interview with RAGE (Australia) and mentioning how they wrote the song on the strange culture building up at the time. ‘Through being cool’ and ‘we are DEVO’ fit into a similar theme.
I saw Devo in a private club in Kansas before they became famous. Before the concert, they played a 1930s movie called "Freaks". The actors in the movie were real carnival "freaks".
The story is that the song was actually written as a mockery of motivational speakers. The whip it part is a little more complicated an you will need to listen to the Professor of Rock video for that full scoop. It is all pretty friggin cool.
DEVO is a true pioneering band that helped usher in the “pop/new wave” genre started in the late 1970s/early 1980s. DEVO members are highly educated University art and philosophy graduates who put societal commentary in their music and even designed their own album art. They were among the first bands to self-produce musical videos and short films well before MTV came on air. Though Whip It is their most well known tune to the general public, they had many songs in regular rotation on “Alternative Music” format radio stations across the nation in the 1980s. They are immediately recognizable to those who listened. Today, band founder Mark Mothersbaugh produces commercial and TV/movie soundtrack music that include: Rugrats animated series, Thor Ragnarok, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, What We Do In The Shadows, director Wes Anderson movies, Lego movies, Hotel Transylvania movies, and much more. DEVO may seem a bit goofy, and part of it was on purpose, but they are deeper than expected and deserve respect for their musical contributions.

Check out "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell. They were another unusual New Wave synth band, early 80s. That song was a huge hit and has been sampled and covered a few times.
Mark Mothersbaugh wrote the music for Nick cartoons and had a library on I phone to use on your video clips ..
I'm glad this song has reappeared among reactors. 10 or so years ago, everyone thought "you must whip it, whip it good" was a reference to Austin Powers, same as how everyone today thinks All-Star is from Shrek.
Loved this song when it came out, it had its own dance and everything...it was so much fun!
Pop punk!😃 It was different & new & we dug it!😂🤘
Oh man, of all the channels you have to be the one to react to more DEVO songs besides whip it, The Girl U Want, Gates of Steel, Jocko Homo, they have so many cool songs and videos you can't go wrong with DEVO!
Jayvee, NEXT DEVO song: "Mongoloid". I swear, you will not be disappointed!
That's my favourite but very non PC nowdays!
@@evenme7729 at that time there was no PC, they were talking about having an extra DNA 40 years ago.
He ain't ready for that. 40 years later and most of the world aint ready.
@@evenme7729 it was never pc. great tune, alan at his best.
@@houngandave Yes I agree. I think it's more that nowdays you can't get away with being non PC (without an uproar ) while back then you could !
saw Devo live years back and they were absolutely fantastic, the energy levels something else, they had just had a UK hit with satisfaction and did couple of festivals
Hahahaha!! You got the right shirt on there, J. Now all you need is that funky plastic tupperware helmet!!!! This has always been a wierd, funky vibe. Only thing they did i truly liked. But its a fun memory.
"Q: Are We Men? A: We Are Devo", by Devo. They also covered The Rolling Stones, "Satisfaction." ✌
That line whip it good is pretty much famous now thanks to this song 👍
2:25 you know this video is old. When she opens that beer, it has a pull tab, not a press tab like they’ve had since the early 80’s.
10th Grade, Mainland High School, Daytona Beach - Devo ruled the summer punk craze - ahhh, memories
Yes Devo!
Never say never by Romeovoid...you won't regret it
Devo has a historically funny underground cd called Devo EZ Listening Muzak (sp)
Social critics using humor and can rock also. 'Satisfaction', 'Come Back Johnny', 'Shrivel Up' are good songs.
Hello from PHILADELPHIA, Jay! "Dee-vo" is the right pronunciation for this band's name. This song was an immediate hit and immensely popular when it came out. It got lots of play time during the early days of MTV. Jay, please check out the song "Come Inside of My Heart," by "IV of Spades." You'll enjoy this smooth, catchy song. 😊🤙 You'll thank me for suggesting this song later. 😁
I love Devo. I was listening to them in 1978. Then this song came out and hit top 40. Everyone was "oooh I LOVE Devo....whip it whip it good". Me I love Devo...."Are we not men, we are Devo....are we not men D.E.V.O." Then they stare blankly at me like I'm an 👽. Hahaha.
I was a senior in high school when this came out. It was a very popular song on the radio and everywhere I went.
Devo was once signed to a record label called Stiff Records. They had some of the best artists signed to their label!! There are a couple of playlists on UA-cam and Spotify with the music from Stiff, I highly recommend giving some of their songs a listen!
They were so popular and fun.
Takes me back to my high school days and dances and good times with great friends. Thanks for this one, I always appreciate when the young people start to listen to the greeat music from my youth, it gives me hope.
Welcome to the world of Devo.
Ahhh... One of my favorites... I used to go to their concerts...
Totally reminds me of high school 😀
My favourite song: Peek-a-boo :-)
LOL. A young missionary from our church introduced us to devo when our children were just 6 and 7. A missionary! Yes!
Haven't heard this in a while! This is a fun song!
This is a song that used to get everyone to the dance floor back in the 80's! Great times then!
We are not men! We are Devo!! They were my dad's favorite during MTV days, I made him a Devo wind chime in shop/ high school 😂
Working in a Coal Mine is fun too!
Great reaction!
