Devo was the epitome of new wave music in the 80s. Them and the B52s were so different to me back then. Junior high school memories for me with this song.
We all danced to Devo. So much fun! Back in the day music videos had to stand out and some were really out there. Concept videos were a thing because you wanted something “new” or artistic. Everything is tongue in cheek with Devo. 😁❤️
"Cahhrackkk that whip!" 😂😂 Devo are a whole other breed. You guys need so much more. They will make your jaw drop half the time. These guys just got nominated for the rock and roll hall of fame this year. They are...different, but they have had a huge influence on the music industry. I recommend Beautiful World, which I really think you guys would love. Please do the official video. If you want to see what makes them such an influential band, check out their cover of The Rolling Stones Satisfaction, live on Saturday Night Live. You should probably listen to the original first tho.
Devo was the nuttiest, most fun, and best conceptual band of the 70s-80s. Check their earliest videos like “Swelling Itching Brain” 😄 And you HAVE to see them perform Satisfaction on SNL - the nation’s young jumped up and became New Wavers 😁 And, um, Neil Young performed with them too 😊
"Whip It" dropped when I was in ninth grade. The song was different from anything else on the radio, but it didn't catch my buddies and me off guard the same way the music on their first album did. When you're ready for more from Devo, check out "Beautiful World", "Girl U Want", "Uncontrollable Urge", "Freedom of Choice", "Mongoloid", "Jocko Homo", or their covers of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Working in the Coal Mine".
Some of Devo's stuff is very weird, but they have some real gems also. They were very unique, even within the New Wave scene. They were among the first groups to do the type of music videos that became synonymous with MTV, and their videos were a big part of MTV getting off the ground. "Jocko Homo" is what I consider their theme song. "Satisfaction", a very unique and genius cover of the Rolling Stones song, is really great! Listen to the studio version of it, since it's a complex song, and hard to reproduce the same live. Other really good ones are: Secret Agent Man (basically a cover) Uncontrollable Urge Mongoloid Girl U Want Freedom of Choice Through Being Cool Jerkin' Back n' Forth Beautiful World Videos of them actually performing are better than the official videos. "Whip It" was their best video, but seeing them perform live is cool, as they are performance artists. You get that in the Whip It video.
Hi guys, this song was super popular when I was in High School in LA. Just as disco was dying out Punk rock started becoming popular. But it was very intense for a lot of people. So a new kind of music took off called New Wave. It had some of the driving rhythms of punk rock without the violence lyrics. Devo was a super popular New Wave band. This was in late 70's and early 80's. The strange thing that by the mid 80's it was pretty much gone and the New Wave bands had blended with other genres to become the signature sound of the 80's that we all recognize. There were some bands in the 90's that try to recreate some of the new wave vibes. But it never quite took off again like it did in its hey day. It was a really fun time for music late 70's and early 80's. There was such a wide variety for everyone. It's not like that today at all. I wish I could take younger people back in time to experience how much fun it was, especially hearing people play live.
Please do "Freedom Of Choice". It's a punky, sneering song with surprisingly scathing lyrics about US consumer culture. Swap out the synths and robot nerd vibe with thrashy guitars and a British accent and it could easily be Sex Pistols, The. Naturally, it's got a bizarre, funny video too. D-E-V-O!
If you've ever seen the show Rediculousness the theme song is from Devo it's called 'Uncontrollable Urge' - My favorite Devo song is 'Freedom of Choice' They also do a cool cover of the Rolling Stones 'Satisfaction'
Hey Shawn & Mel. Really enjoyed your reaction to Devo. You two are adorable & have wonderful chemistry. Had a request but new to this not sure protocol. Song is "I can make you dance" by Zapp.
The inclusion of beer drinking cowboys seemed a rather pointed barb at status quo culture back then. In retrospect, I can't claim to know what they saw in the images.
Like ice skating rinks but with roller skates and no ice.. Popular with teens in the 70's and early 80's. They sold food, played good music, had contests for prizes. They were fun.
DEVO was so much fun in the 80s. I went to their concert in 1983 in NYC and purchased that plastic upside down flowerpot hat. I held on to it for many years.
Believe me, we all had the same reaction when it first came out. They were an immediate sensation. People were putting flower pots on their head..those were the days.
I miss the 80's!
Chiefs kingdom here in Grain valley Missouri
This band is from Akron, Ohio
The town I grew up in
Their shows were always big fun
Cleveland chick here
I grew up on this music. I was so much in the melody, that I only now I realize what it meant....LOL
Trust me the song is not about cracking a whip...whip it whip it good get it ?
For even more bizarre but wildly popular in its day - listen to Jocko Homo and Uncontrollable Urge.
How about reviewing I STILL BE INTO JAMES BROWN by TOWER OF POWER.

Couldn’t understand why our parents didn’t like us singing this when we were young, definitely realised as I got older 😂😂😂
I think the lyrics are very inspiring. It’s the visuals that are kind of risqué.
It deliberately had a double meaning - one motivational, the other risqué!
Check out Devo's song "Freedom of Choice".

Please listen to Devo "Jerkin' back n' forth"! You won't be disappointed!
Devo = De-Evolution. A new wave band. Good old college days, 1980.
Devo is a genre all by itself. Fun and funny. Loved to dance to it
Mark Mothersbaugh went on to amazing things!
Solid reaction to a very strange music video lol

They start early in the seventies, but their first recording was in 1977 "Mongoloid/Joko Homo". I loved it.
Try Stagger Lee by Lloyd Price I think you would enjoy this one
I love DEVO. They were fantastic in concert. Try Girl U Want or Love without Anger.
Please do "Freedom Of Choice".

Twist and Shout !
The Earth 🌎 it moves too slow

Twist Away the Gates of Steel !
I still don't understand why they're dropping their jaws at the sight or sound of a whip being cracked
P.S. not worthy of reaction, but I always liked Devo's Snowball.
Devo still going strong
Rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame nominees 2022 !
Whipping it meant a different thing. High turtlenecks and red hats gave a visual
The inclusion of beer drinking cowboys seemed a rather pointed barb at status quo culture back then. In retrospect, I can't claim to know what they saw in the images.
Another fun song with suspiciously double-entendre lyrics.
WE USED TO ICE SKATE TO THIS. HERE IS AN OLD CLASSIC BY FUNKADELIC....WHAT IS SOUL?........SEE WHAT YOU THINK. FREE YOUR MIND.
Some of the weirdest bands came out in the 80s and it was hella fun 🤣🤣🤣 this song made everyone dance despite the weirdness lol
Now check out Let It Whip by The Dazz Band.
✌❤
my dad knew the motherbaugh's and their dad back in the day. The one with the whip is Mark and the other one singing is his brother lol
This was a top ten hit in 1980. The red domes bring energy. Many of their tunes are used in commercials.
Welcome to Kent state Ohio music. Think 1 of them were a teacher. It's been a while since i read on them
Yall should see " I can't get no satisfaction "
You guys should react to " Let me Tickle your Fancy" by Jermaine Jackson, produced by Devo. I think y'all would enjoy that.
Roller rink?
