Your intro song sounds like it was influenced by DEVO. Wiggly World lyrics (1979) They say the fittest shall survive Yet the unfit may live Let 'em wear gaudy colors Or avoid display Hey it don't matter It's all the same So I do this and I do that So I do this and I do that So I do this and I do that
Are you reviewing the video or the song? Cuz you do a disservice if you try to do them together. Trying listening to the song without the music. Its a different experience than hearing it with the video.
I saw Devo live in like 1982 and they were unbelievable in concert. The entire concert was played in front of a large screen with a backing video that was insane. Their timing was absolutely impeccable and spot on!
Hearing the song back in the early 80's was a revelation! Synths, drum machines and guitar was not the normal band setup back then but it definitely was a foretaste of what bands look and sound like now! Devo were like musical prophets!
Yeah, people forget, their name means 'de-evolution.' This genre broke away from punk and they were the first group through the gate into that new genre. Looking backwards it might feel pat, but at the time it was groundbreaking and highly original in its structure.
I grew up on new wave and I know Devo has other songs you can dig. I suggest Girl U Want, Freedom Of Choice, and I think you will be amused at their cover of Satisfaction by Rolling Stones. It's funny how radically they changed it, made it weird, geek futuristic. Fun band and groundbreaking.
Freedom from choice is what you want! That satisfaction cover was in the movie casino...amazing scene. Jocko homo is one of my favourites...are we not men? And weird Al's style parody, dare to be stupid
Gerald Casale and Bob Lewis were art students who came across the idea of de-evolution as a source of humor in the late '60s. After being at the center of the Kent State Massacre in 1970, they got more serious about the idea that humanity was regressing, not evolving. Their earliest works are good examples about proto-punk music that joined the under-current of music from 60s through the 70s before Punk became a defined thing. (also Velvet Underground, MC5, the Stooges, the Bad Brains - even The Who at times) Devo's early video for "Jocko Homo" 1976, puts it out there pretty clearly. Another classic is their deconstructed version of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction." By the way, the tragedy at Kent State was also witnessed by Chrissie Hynde, who was herself at the birth of punk, but in England where she worked at Marshall McClaren's clothing shop, Sex. She left school after the massacre and went to London to be a musician. Before becoming a success in her own right, she taught the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones to play his guitar right. Chris Butler, who would become a leading member of the band, The Waitresses, was another witness to the attack. And then there is Joe Walsh of the Eagles, who was just visiting Kent from another college on the day of the fateful attack - he also decided to quit school and pursue music.
They apparently made the video after the song became a hit - and the storyboard of the video was a reaction to what the mainstream understanding of the song had come to be - a masturbation song and they parodied that perception in the video amongst other things. Interviews they gave at the time Whip It came out said the song was originally inspired by the american author Thomas Pynchon's book Gravity's Rainbow that parodied the can do philosophy that he saw prevalent in american culture at the time. Devo put great emphasis on the videos of their songs, sometimes writing a song to fit a video concept that already had in mind. Other Devo songs and videos you could react to are - Freedom of Choice, Beautiful World, Love Without Anger, Jocko Homo, Satisfaction just to name a few.
I'm 63. It's fun all over again. EXCEPT the context of what was happening socially wasn't. This commentary on intersubjectivity as children rebel against traditional meaning is nothing short of iconic.
These Cat's had SERIOUS chops thought it may not seem like it . They did some really complicated things musically and conceptually . They even made their own keyboards so those sounds are nearly impossible to duplicate . If you haven't yet, check out their cover of "Satisfaction" and pay attention to the beat . It's basically backwards .
DEVO was my favorite band as a little kid. They came along at a time when I was so desperate to hear anything that sounded different from the classic rock that the radio played endlessly. But since they weren't played on the radio, I remember putting a cassette recorder up to the TV speaker when they played on Saturday Night Live. I think they played Workin' on a Coal Mine, and their cover of The Stones Satisfaction, and I used to listen to those two songs over and over on that crummy cassette recording.
I believe it came out the same year MTV started, so nobody knew anything about making music videos. I agree, not the most impressive song but I think the vibe was people liked seeing new, funny stuff that weren't copy and paste sitcoms.
Awesome song choice. You must whip it! Rednex vs. Geeks = We all win! This is one of those classics where snyth was just coming into the scene. Over the top? Yes! Classic Tune? Yes !
Absurdist kind of like a Dadaist painting only in song. It was fun dance band , saw them in clubs several times. Always a fun night . Never saw the video before, I’m of a generation the music had to stand on its own because we were out living our lives not watching tv
devo, short for de-evolution. Although the song is awesome in itself, it actually makes much more sense in context. In my eyes, it's one of the most deceptively simple songs ever written, but it grows more complex every time I listen to it.
@@weaponizedglitter69 I was classic rock all the way and yes, fast forward 40 years, I'm much more diversified now and a lot of the music I hated in the 80's, especially, I've come to appreciate.
Just watched Revenge of the Nerds with my 15 year-old! Some parts - you know the ones - gave him pause, but proud of him for being able to see the context and overall love the movie. Poindexter was 100% Devo!! Devo is from my area of Ohio. I can’t describe the balls these guys had to be that weird in that time in that place!
Good how you guys seem to be really doing your own thing but working together. Respect the guy who didn't get down with that vibe, though. He looks like he's about the same age as me. I get it. Strange time. Thanks for the cool video.
This song and Devo came out of late punk culture and were (as often comically here) making quite striking cultural commentary. There is meaning and observation underlying the song.
They did a worldwide concert tour last year.Although Whip It was their only top 40 hit , they've sold millions of albums since 1978 You should check out their music videos for Jocko Homo (1976) I Can't Get No Satisfaction as well

Please do "Freedom Of Choice". It's a punky, sneering song with surprisingly scathing lyrics about US consumer culture. Swap out the synths and robot nerd vibe with thrashy guitars and a British accent and it could easily be Sex Pistols, The. Naturally, it's got a bizarre, funny video too. D-E-V-O!
I haver some fun! Very great reaction guys 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 There's a vídeo that nobody react, I am searching for só longe, and is the funniest vidro ever. 'Yah Mamma' (push the tempo) from Far Boy Slim. 😂😂😂😂😂
I remember being at the Club Earthquake Ethels...the floor would shake towards the end of the night. And i remember this song on full Vodka kamakazi mode...did dance to song it but oh the hangover! whew! lolo.
Their whole shtick was nerds from the future. Of course, the joke was their version of the future was what people thought the future would look like in the 50's.
Devo are criminally underrated. They always looked like they were having so much fun.
Back when we didn't take ourselves too seriously while still delivering an underlying message!
Another fun song.
Mark Mothersbaugh from Devo went on to compose the music for the cartoon show Rugrats on Nickelodeon ... and pretty much every Wes Anderson film.
And Thor Ragnarok
@@hugeeuge810 oh that's awesome - I did not know that.
You should look up his studio Mutato Muzika. It's an awesome building. Think it use to be a dental clinic to the stars in LA.

That’s about the same time I saw them too. It was great!
I wish I could have but I was 11 then 😅

Talking Heads were the daddy’s of art rock.
Amen, brother
There are no drum machines on this song. That's all Alan Myers. Rolling Stone called him "the human drum machine."
They were always great live, so much fun. That song stands the test! Art students make great bands!
I love the campiness!

That cover of Satisfaction is utter shit. They have a bunch of great songs though, i.e. Freedom Of Choice.
@@marioarguello6989 It's a FANTASTIC cover! Totally unique.

So glad you dudes are reacting to devo. They are surprisingly great musicians.

Q: Are we not Men?
A: We are DEVO
thats the name of an album they put out 25 years too soon. Brillant album.
How 80's were Devo? They made an animated appearence in a bar scene in the film Heavy Metal performing the song "Working in a Coalmine".😉😁
The also had a film called Human Highway featuring Devo and Neil Young!
You would be surprised if you tried one of their straight rock songs, like "Gates of Steel" or "Mongoloid".
DEVO has soooooo many rippin' tunes. Hope you check out more.
They ought to watch some Primus, after this one. "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver"...
Well obviously you don't know that Devo is still playing a lot of Big show's few of their members have passed away I've been a fan

They do a wild cover version of (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
When this first came out I was so musically bigoted I just thought it was nonsense, but it and the band grew on me over the years.
Yes it does grow on you. May I ask what was your preference? Also do you now enjoy many genres ?

The video is so bizarre that you can't stop smiling.
That song came out when I was in jr high school 😂 I feel old. That and Blondie’s “Heart Of Glass” were my jams

Revenge of the Nerds is a classic
BLACK SABBATH WAR PIGS LIVE PARIS 1970
Silly song but catchy. Mark Mothersbaugh went on to do a lot of movies and tv including The Rugrats Theme
If you didn't realize Devo did play on the 1987 revenge of the nerds
They were so ahead of their time.

Great point!
I bought this album...there was a flyer inside where you could order a flowerpot hat!
Energy dome.
Omg, I was 15 or 16 when it came out, I completely forgot that he whipped her clothes off 😂😂😂😂
Devo was very cool 😎 and they moved in unison.
1979
One of the best bands ever….50 years and still touring
That was a fun throw back!
Their song Freedom Of Choice is a fantastic song as well.
I went to high school with them they lived like a few houses down for me pretty cool
Try another Devo video "That's Good" which MTV Banned because of a French fry flying in a donut and the girl's reaction after. The inuendo

DEVO didi it

Yeh. Its still relevant🤘❤️. Really surprised that riff was not sampled
Ohh no!!!.... not Devo!!!! , can't believe you guys found them lol
Gerry and Bob are my first cousins I have a signed record from when I was a kid
Devo didn't spend a lot of time in the gym bulking up for this. Or tanning beds. Enjoyed this.

It’s TOTALLY revenge of the nerds!❤
Next by Devo. Workin in the coalmine or try Can't get no satisfaction.
Devo are one of the coolest bands ever. Check out New Traditionalists!
Awe let me guess, it was so very misogyny based. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The funniest thing about this song is that they're all singing it so seriously! Hahaha! Cracks me up!
I remember DEVO from square pegs as a wee kid ua-cam.com/video/f5-5bAgEueY/v-deo.html
FOlks used to pop lock off that song. Devo is IT!! #AkronOH
Obviously we had good weed in the 80s.
Devo might be the white version of Parliament, as far as being weird.
Through Being Cool is another Devo track is good one too
There's a lot more to Devo than Whip It.
Weird, catchy but in a good way.
This song is about beating drug addiction!
As a teenager in these days, Devo was OK, Boy George, the Tubes, The Vapors (Turning Japanese) too....Flock of Seagulls....trash.
?????
They were unique and innovative! Fun times!
Why you wearing a hoodie in the house?
trippy nerd rock whips me up good!!!!!!!!
The red cup in your hand is perfect.. if inverted lol
This is what happens when you lick to many postage stamps 😂
Crack that whip? Licorice Whip.
