Go to a Halal cart and get the chicken over rice with salad for about 6 or 7 bucks. With the hot and white sauces.
shizzy35 there’s a good halal truck I always go to near the World Trade Center where I work. Chicken over rice is $5 and you also get a free can of soda 😃. But yes Halal is a must .. and must not forget the hot and white sauces either! 😉
I love how Halal cart food is now becoming an NYC staple. Pre-2000's, not quite often you'd see a halal cart but nowadays, they're easy to spot and have even rivaled the amount of hot dog carts! Every time I go back home, I always get pizza, pretzels, italian subs, bagels, mom's homecooking of course, and HALAL. BAM.
I did several years ago - totally overrated. One of the most diappointing food experiences in my life because I was so looking forward to it.

What cart did you go to? I mean there's a lot of 'em so there's gonna be some lackluster ones. I mean of course there's the halal guys at 6th and 53rd, but plan on being on line for a long time. They have another location downtown, not sure exactly where though. If you're far downtown the cart at Whitehall and Water sts is damn good. Another pretty decent one was in the upper east side on 3rd ave at about 87th or so? Don't quite remember.
Anyway, point being there's pretty much a metric shitton of halal carts. They aren't all gonna be good. Also, you can always hit a brick and mortar place too, if you want. Mamoun's on St. Marks is pretty outstanding. Also, the idea of a falafel/shawarma joint being on St. Marks is pretty hilarious. Anyway, take 'er easy.

Man... My father lived in NY for years he shared an appartment building with his brother and two arab dudes, You know one those sketchy appartments filled with rats. He eventually ran out of money and gave up and came back to mexico to go on with his life. Long story short he loved a place called ZABARS and we visit ny like every two years and man i can tell that just the smell of the hazelnut coffee bring tears to his eyes. Also, he loves KATZ's but he never had enought money to buy a decent pastrami sandwich until he want back with me and man i will never forget his expression when he had that sandwich.
Food in new york for most people is just a great experience by itself but ny people will never get to feel that nostalgia. That adds something else to the food. I only can imagine how he felt wen he had that pastrami sandwich like 30 years later. I dont usually type stuff on youtube but i respect anthony bourdain and felt like sharing.

If you were a Jew on the Upper West Side you went to Zabar's, maybe to H&H for their slightly better bagels. And if you were a Jew on the Lower East Side you went to Russ & Daughters. Simple formula.

I had an 8 hour international layover in NY, the only time I was near NY City. I went into town to explore and for a Katz pastrami sandwich . It ended up being one of the major highlights and best memories of the whole trip.

Sadly I never fully appreciated how cool this guy was until after he passed. Seemed like such a cool guy. You could tell he was just as at home eating a hot dog from a street vendor as he was a slap up meal at a top resturant.

There actually is some satisfaction in a New York street hot dog with some ketchup and mustard. It's not the best hot dog ever, but something about it gives you that rush of endorphins.
I'd say the same about the halal carts. You can find a halal cart on every street corner, something I really miss in other cities.
This is one of my favorite videos of his because it shows how deep rooted his experience is. It's just there. You can see it. He's been around.
You know you've completed everything there is to achieve as a chef, when you speak so sincerely about basic food
Truth...it's all about the basics. I can only imagine that upon completion of one's journey to excellence, that you're able to truly appreciate and have real love and respect for the basics and what it takes to masterfully execute them.
Is that why he killed himself? Because he completed everything?
I think he moreso was at the tippity top as a restuaranteur, not so much a chef. He was talented in his own right as a chef and had immense knowledge, but he would be the first to admit that he sucked by comparison to say like Marco Pierre White, or Ferran Adria.
But I agree that this man appreciate food as a whole, not just the primadonna Michelin Star area. The guy could be as happy in a Waffle House at 2am as he would be a 3 star Michelin Restuarant.

Having his show playing while not even watching is comforting somehow. Like the conversation after a holiday dinner.
You can always see his genuine passion for places and food,he was a tourist and customer first and a restaurateur second. That's why so many related to him.

Having lived in NYC nearly all my life I can honestly say I’ve consumed my fair share of dirty water dogs. Every now and again you’ll find a vendor that offers grilled dogs, maybe even better than dirty waters.
As a Chicagoan, I approve this message.

@Sarah Delany Chicago hot dogs are awesome. They beat a NYC dirty water dog any day. But Papaya King and original Nathan's hot dogs are better than Vienna Beef's. That's why a lot of people eat them with just mustard.

I lived in nicaragua in 2010-2013. All the tv shows was dubbed in spanish except for one food channel that always showed programs with Anthony Bourdain. Damn i loved to watch his shows after work. RIP chef.

New York Pizza is a unique experience. I like the way the man himself describes it all honestly. It’s not the best pizza or the best hot dogs...but it’s a staple of New York to get a bite to eat during the rush of day.
The french call it terrior. "a sense of place"
You may not be eating the best hot dog or the best pizza but you are eating NYC.
A NYC dirty water dog doesn't taste better anywhere than NYC.
Goes to show why taste and volume aren't the only factors to good food.
In LA street tacos don't taste as good in a restaurant as they do on the side walk.
A French Crossiant is best in France.
Growing up in the midwest a greasy spoon diner is the best breakfast. Not a $100 truffle benedict which is delicious BTW. I want crispy has browns, greasy over easy eggs, and coffee just good enough not to be bad.
The thing is is that they have the NYC staples like the dollar slice but they also have really high quality pizza as well. NYC is regarded by many as having the best pizza in the US.

worked in new york for 15 years. This is what we do, chicken and lamb over rice. get the veggies for vitamins and don't forget, red sauce white sauce.
He had so much wisdom. You could just hear it when he spoke. And it was a deep deep wisdom. Not just about food but all aspects of life.

You should read his books OP. Not only are they absolutely fantastic and vintage Bourdain, but a big incite into his mental health. He talked about killing himself a fair amount, as well as rampant drug use and depression. It’s one of the onky celeb deaths that ever actually affected me. Him and Norm Macdonald. I was on an Alaskan cruise with no internet when I found out Norm died. I literally wept in a tour bus when I found out. They were and are two hnique characters that touched a whole lot of peoples lives and we miss them dearly.
I live in Oklahoma . My husband and I opened the first legal push hotdog cart in our area in 50 years . I had not really looked at Anthony Bourdain and his stuff but I have to say after looking at many of his interviews the last few days I feel connected to him now . I used to be a bloody good dishwasher working in a mostly male Asian restaurant you had to be harsh and dirty to get by there. Never again . I would rather sling dogs on my own then to do that again . However I learned I am strong enough to make it I am just not despite enough to hurt myself like that again.

At the end, I had a split second where I thought I could look up if he did a Chicago segment that ended with another city, then another segment in another city, and wondering if he's doing a whole series ....

In new York there's so many amazing cultures. Taste them and complement and embrace them. Live an open minded life. Be humble and love your fellow human.
When I went to NY city a homeless man asked me for change and I only use my debit card so I said I don't have any and he told me to go f*ck myself. Also, a lot of the streets I walked by smelled like human shit. It was very hot then and the smell was unbearable. I only live 5 hours away and I will never ever go back. Place is a complete shithole.

I thrive on corner shop pizza slices and sandwiches packed to the brim when I'm in New York, love it! Been to Katz's and some of the other legendary delis too, and it's just delicious!! A diner or two always on the schedule as well. The best hotdogs I've had so far in NYC was up around the MET. Don't miss the lobster shop at the Chelsea market... lovely food there too!

As a New Yorker who breathed in New York, I always connected with Bourdain. I also appreciated that he felt there was no shame in eating at Waffle House when in the south. One cool, but tortured soul. RIP.

I remember an episode of his where it was raining where he was at so he decided to just do a whole show in the hotel. It was freaking amazing.

If I only had a few days to eat things no other city has.. Artichoke pizza (DiFara is good, but still similar to what you can get elsewhere), Katz tender pastrami, Halal Guys (though this is a global chain now), Jamaica food (patties and jerk chicken), good bagels..

Halal Guys is a national chain now but the NYC carts are still the best. Tried Halal Guys in Chicago and New Orleans and the ingredients are slightly different I think. Taste is a little off.
Nyc wow. I've been a few times. Went to college close by and grew up in NJ. Now saying all that I'd say a good nyc bagel is my #1 choice for foods that nyc does best. Crunchy exterior with a soft interior. The water makes a bagel and like ppl say there's something special about it in nyc
After my dad died in 2001 Anthony was the person I looked up to the most. Now it's just my mom I admire.

I grew up in the New York metro area and after spending four years in Montreal (which has great cuisine in its own right) for college, the one food I missed the most from New York was a plain cheese, New York style, thin crust pizza. It was the first thing I demanded when I returned home.
facts!! it’s unreasonably difficult to find a good bagel outside NYC. not quite as hard to get good pizza (subjective), but good CHEAP pizza is tough.
i don’t care if it’s not the “best” pizza. like the man said, it’s something you can’t get anywhere else. that’s still worth something.

Im in Gainesville Fla for college and all I do is dream of a crispy pizza and pork roll egg and cheese on an everything bagel with ketchup on it
as a new yorker... my obsession with dirty water hot dogs stopped once I turned 13... there are alot of grilled dogs just as cheap all over the city... im not gonna say New Yorkers don't eat them.. but its rare one of my friends stops at a hot dog cart... but maybe construction workers and people on lunch breaks from time to time...
If a average New Yorker is getting food off of a cart it is probably Lamb or Chicken over rice at a Halal cart...

I'll say it. Don't eat dirty water hot dogs. They're just packaged dogs dumped in water. At least with one of those halal gyro carts, there's some cooking involved. Papaya King for a grilled dog. "Utility pizza" - look for the places where cops eat. They know the best ones. At the very least, a place with plenty of people so the pizza isn't sitting cold, waiting to be reheated.

I just got back from NYC for the first time ever. I was there for 5 days. I went to Sarge’s, Katz’s, Russ and Daughter’s, Joe’s Pizza. Some bagel place. I went to a number of just local pubs and I won’t say dive bars but places that weren’t like super nice. Just had drinks at those places. The only “nice” place was Del Frisco’s, which was outstanding. I was very disappointed in myself that I ended up not getting a dirty water hot dog though. Honestly though it was one of the best trips of my life. I had such a good time.
I went to New York City for the first time April 2020 to work at a hospital during the pandemic... I was there for 2 1/2 months and it was a ghost town when I first got there.. definitely want to go back and experience it the right way.

I miss his presence 😪. Loved every one of his shows, and appearances. He was one of a kind. The best at what he did. Though many have tried and will continue to try...No one has even come close to mastering the art of travel, food and story telling.
Shame that horribly careless woman who made a public fool of him & his love for her. She willingly, and unapologetically broke his fragile spirit, and stripped him of the will to keep living.

dude food in new york is amazing and its everywhere. so many cultures. i dont want to be the bearer of bad news but honest to go the best pizza I have ever had is in NYC. and I think what hes trying to say that even $1 pizza in nyc is better than $5 pizza anywhere else. Its so good. A reallyyyy good slice might cost around $3 and when you ahve those kinds of slices they are really phenomenal.
doctornige1 just because Naples has the original doesn't mean it has the best pizza. The dish evolved and changed in America. In Naples though, they'll use fresh ingredients that are better for sure.

Some recommendations at Manhattan, Downtown. As a creature of habbit...
*Prince Street Pizza*: Get the fucking pepporoni squares... bit more expensive, 4~5 a piece, but it's SOO FRIGGING GOOD. My favourite place
*Artichoke*: NOT NY style pizza, but good still. Got a few spots here and there
*Joe's Pizza* at Carmines and also at 14th Street: Almost anyone would tell ya it's the quintiseential NY slice place. Get the regular. It's cheap too
*John's of Bleecker Street*: They don't sell slices but pies. This whole street has great pizza places
*Keste's*: Best Napolitan Pizza
*Bleecker St Pizza*: Pretty damn good pizza. Regular NY place
Ones I know in Brooklyn and are fucking great:
*Pauli Gee's*: Another great neopolitan-esque place
*Roberta's*: Made Bushwick what it is today, a hipster spot. It's pretty good but pretty high end
*Best Pizza* at Williamsburg
*Di Fara* at Brooklyn: Quite far from the popular areas. Long line. But if you love pizza, this is the place to go
Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg has a lot of great food and pizza here are some

So many food critics turn their noses up at food regular people might like, preferring cutting edge, avant garde fusion stuff made with things regular people wouldn’t eat.
Bourdain is the exception, trying and recommending food that more than just snobs could or would enjoy.
He was a classy guy.
