I've been watching your videos for years, and I have to say, I do see a bit of Bourdain in you, especially in the way you seek out real restaurants and eateries, run by real people. You're a man of the people and authentic, like he was.
It's so sweet and special that you ordered the dishes JUST like Anthony. His voice was so iconic and I was so heartbroken when he passed. Really glad you did this 🤍
For all of us that love travel and food, Anthony Bourdain was an inspiration to all of us. One of the very few times I cried when a celebrity passed away, a person I didn’t know or ever meet, but he simply meant so much to me and the things I love to do in life. Thanks for this video Jon this was great. Adding more of these things to my list of places to visit. I mean realistically all the food travel shows and the travel food YT channels in some way owe are because of Anthony Bourdain. Loved this
When I was growing up in Brooklyn in the 1960s, my mother would bring home "appetizing" (a term, BTW, that a lot of people who didn't grow up with it aren't familiar with) from a store called Fred and Murray's on Ralph Avenue, which was where we lived, and bring back bagels, bialys, belly lox (!), smoked whitefish, and, of course, pickled herring, every Saturday night. Maybe not the food we ever had, but so delicious! Thank you so much for taking me back.
my man, i've watched you for a while especially for your content in english. with you a i have enhanced my listening skills thanks to you. keep it up. your videos are my favorite routine of the day and now i'm watching your videos as can as possible. in fact, my dream hahaah is one day greet you on the street,
I'm a southern boy, born and raised and lived in the NYC area for over a decade. Ate everything in all kinds of places, like a kid in a candy store and the places I miss the most are the Jewish delis/appetizing joints with the bulging smoked/preserved fish cases, pickles, baked goods (bagels and bialys of course) and coffee, hot tea and pastries. The snack bar of my dreams. And I'm a toasted bagel guy (lightly, please)
Props to you Jon for an homage to the late Mr Bourdain, what a great summary of everyday eateries. Still loving all your videos, I learn something new each time I watch a new one . ❤
Definitely enjoyed this episode of Bourdain's fave spots in NYC, and the other one, as well. I also loved how he immersed himself in restaurants / eateries that weren't as popular but had great food. And made it about the people and culture. Thank you, again, for another great video.
Native Californian here- lately the burgers at In N Out have no flavor. I’m starting to think they are over-rated. 😂 Currently I think the The Habit has way better burgers.
I usually sit where Bourdain sat, a little more crowded, but you really get a taste of the place. Something important to know is that Greengrass is cash-only. It's pricey, so hit the ATM before you come in. Also, get a plate of latkes, they are wonderful! Bourdain also loved DiFara in Brooklyn, he helped put them on the map, and Papaya King on the Upper East Side, NOT the West 72nd Street location, the one on 3rd near 86th.
I ate 3 burgers during my 2x visit in NYC. These burgers where at "Handcraft Burgers and Brew", "Shake shack" & "Emily west village" although The emily burger was the most expensive one it was also by far the best burger maybe that i have ever had 😂 I dont know if that changed but it was truly amazing a year ago 😁
I get it that people get a kick out of a restaurant or pub being in business for a really long time. But I have very often been at places where the food just sucked and it’s basically the nostalgia that’s continuing to keep them in business.
Thank you for all of your videos, they are so good, that Rudy's looks right up my street, I hope to visit New York one day and your videos give me some great ideas. Much appreciated.
I was fortunate to work near Bourdain's restaurant Les Halles on Park Avenue South for several years. Just about the only place I'd go and spend $30 (ten years ago) for a lunch just for myself.
Good Tuesday Afternoon My Friend IAM Hoping That You Are Having A Amazing Day We Really Appreciate You For Carrying On The Anthony Bourdain Legacy And Giving The Tourism Experiences On What Restaurant They Should Try Out Much Blessings And Love Always Ms British Gray From Tampa Florida ❤ Rest In Heavenly Peace Anthony Bourdain
I have to disagree with you on Shake Shack vs In-N-Out burgers. Our local joint of Shake Shack on ECR in La Costa, Carlsbad could not stand up to Double Double in In-N-Out by taste or presentation. We tried once and never again. So maybe NYC Shake Shack is different, I have to try it, but as of now - In-N-Out all the way.
I started watching this channel before I spent more than a few days in NYC for the first time in 2022. All these spots will definitely be on my list once I return
I’ve being watching your videos for months now as NYC is my dream holiday. Your videos have helped me build a perfect itinerary to NYC but I think there’s so much more tourist would to like to know when travelling to NYC that no one on UA-cam has covered and I think you’d get great response from a few of my suggestions, such as: 1) Best Airport to land 2) Famous movie locations in NYC from the Lotte palace(Gossip girl) to the ghost busters station to home alone scenes to Breakfast at Tiffany’s to the friend’s apartment 3) Wollman ice rink during winter and summer 4) Famous celebrity’s restaurant and bakeries like Carlos Bakery from Cake boss 5)Fun activities to do like go karts or mini golf 6)For some reason no one speak about Woodbury commons yet everyone I speak to back in South Africa tells me it’s one of the best shopping places to get good deal(Would be nice to see a guide on it) 7) Best hotels to stay ranging for different budgets 8) Simple trick in NYC, like how to get a SIM card and how to book a Broadway show etc I would love to see a video with some of these suggestions, keep up the great work
I will never believe that he topped himself. I bought all of his books. He said that if he ever were to do that, it would be an overdose of H, an addiction he recovered from. He would have had no trouble getting some, even in rural France. And he was crazy about his daughter. I do hope, for her sake, that the truth comes out eventually. Nice tribute to him to visit some of his favourite spots in NYC. He also liked "dirty water" hotdogs, which always made me laugh because those were the first hotdogs I ever knew.
As a Brit that's been to both New York and LA, and having had both Shake Shack and In'n'Out Burger, I can tell you right now that you are tripping sir. In'n'Out Burger is the best burger. There's no burger better.
I miss the old booths at Rudy’s. The legend was they were originally a red “leatherette” and one day one of them got ripped so they put a piece of red tape over the rip. Eventually, over time and other tears the entire booth was just covered in the tape. That’s what I was told in my first time in the bar in the summer of 1984.
Another quality video Jon. Don’t think you ever make a bad one. Looked like you enjoyed filming this one. Bourdain was certainly one of a kind. Did things his way. Thanks for showing us these places? Are you any more of a toasted bagel fan now? It’s much better than untoasted but that’s how you do things in the States.
Toasted bagel is fine at a spot like Barney Greengrass that doesn't specialize in bagels. At a spot that make sthem fresh daily (Utopia for example) you don't need it toasted.
@@HereBeBarr I agree. You know far more than me. I need to try a real fresh specialist one. Just never get round to visiting these places. Never in main tourist areas. I bet the difference is unbelievable compared to shop bought bagels. I did send you a direct message to. Nice work.
Love the video. I watched alot of your videos when i travel to NYC in 2021. They were a great help but i actually found Rudis by chance and loved it in there. More or a Rudis Red fan myself. Its even cooler that bourdain loved it as well. Thanks for the great content
I scrolled back and smashed that "Like" button. Hey, I understand NYC is expensive but actually a burger at that place is about the same prices (but with fries) that you can get at most burger joints even in the suburbs these days. But WHAT IS THE DEAL with a diet Coke at $4.59 ?????? Then there's the 9% restaurant meals tax on top of that? Plus you leave some sort of a tip to someone, right, the server, the house, whatever? I think Cokes at $4.59 each is outrageous !! A draft beer used to be that price in some fancy joints, less in an actual bar that serves burgers. And as for the sturgeon and lox with the bagel. You DID note that the lox were from Gaspe Canada, (part of Quebec Province) and NOT from Nova Scotia, right? Thanks for the video. I need to get back to NYC and go to a couple shows, stay in a couple of moderately-priced hotels for a few nights, and eat and drink and take some great ferry rides the rest of my time there. You inspire me to visit after 30-40 years away.
If you want really good Sturgeon in a different way, I'd check out the Azerbaijani and related spots in Bensonhurst/Sheepshead. They make theirs as kabobs and top it with pomegranate molasses. It's delicious. A good spot is Village Cafe but there's several others such as Sheep by Barashka. My favorite steakhouse burger is at Wollensky's Bar. Outstanding and served with waffle fries.
Sturgeon kebabs with pomegranate molasses has to be the best New York City food recommendation I've seen in ages. Putting it on my list - much appreciated!
I'm glad you subtly called out every true New Yorkers preferred method of leaving bagels untoasted. Seeing Bourdain ask for a toasted bagel had me wondering if he was going to be putting ketchup on his hot dog at Rudy's!
Great video Jon, really enjoyed the atmosphere in Greengrass. It was nice that you showed the cases the fish was in as well & not just on your plate. That burger didn't appeal to me, so soggy looking & the piece of lettuce didn't even have a hint of green in it- lol. Thanks again.👌
For those who want to get straight to the point: 1) Barney Greengrass -Sturgeon Platter, toasted plain bagel 2) Burger Joint (inside the Thompson Central Hotel) - Cheeseburger, medium rare with everything, beer, no fries. 3) Rudy’s Bar & Grill - (look for the pig) plain hot dog with mustard, comes free with a drink purchase. Happy Eating.
Never had smoked sturgeon... Will definitely try it as Barney Greengrass soon! The burger joint has some delicious looking burgers and will check out that place as well!
Today is our last day of our one week vacation in NYC. Based on your recommendation, we spent our last lunch at the Burger Joint and it was well worth it. So thanks for that and anyway for all your videos without which the vacation would not have been so fulfilling. Keep Up the good Work!
As usual, you always give me new ideas. These will be on my radar for my next trip. As an aside, I checked out the Jay-Z exhibit at the Brooklyn Public Library on Friday & was amazed!
Oh how I loved Anthony Bourdain this video makes me sad 😢 I was fortunate enough to meet Bourdain at a book tour in Orlando where he autographed one of his books and shook my hand. That was a happy day!
Hey Jon have u ever eaten at 5 Napkin Burger? I used to go to the 1 on east 14th but they closed at the end of 2022. Now there's only 2 locations left but still worth a try. If u love sweet potato fries I'd say these are some of the best
Great call! I also loved 5 Napkin Burger on 14th & Third. Great atmosphere and bar area. Their Happy Hour was superlative with $2.00 hand rolls, wings and sliders.
I used to go to the Burger Joint in the early 2000s. It really has changed since I was last there. Big Nick's was the greatest burger place in New York ever. Unfortunately, it closed some years ago.
Yo jon love your videos man, love from india 🇮🇳❤️ we would love to see you making videos of trying out some Indian restaurants/Food in NYC such as Dhamaka or the dosa man of new york thiru kumar as there aren’t many videos of people reviewing them and people don’t have much information about them so ya
I've been to Katz and the very papaya dog tony used to frequent and yeah they are very good. I wanted to go to Mangenaro's but that shut down due to a family dispute. Keen's maybe as i would love to try a great steak or mutton chop. a number of places Tony showed are gone now for some reason or another but i wanted to try them once at least.
Sad to say that the Papaya King that Mr. Bourdain frequented is no longer. And I mean the food. They also moved to a new location across the street. Went there a few months ago and their dogs are overly-chewy salt bombs. No snap. And they are now $4.00+ each. The best dogs are at Gray's Papaya on 72nd & Broadway, and Billy's cart ($2.00) on CPW & 93rd, NW corner.

Cheers Bourdain! 🍻 🌭
Still can’t believe I just found you Jon!
his fav bar was the distinguished wakamba lounge aka wakamba bar in midtown west
We stay at Hotel Beacon, which is close by? We’ll stop by, Barney’s, for sure…
