Rex should have pulled the pin months, even years earlier instead of trying to compete on these routes once it was clear Virgin wasn’t going to fold. As I always say if you can’t beat them, join them i.e. form alliance with Virgin Australia and offer codeshares and interconnecting flights to regional cities. Perhaps the tried to offer that and Virgin/Bain laughed them out of the room.

Thanks Rory for covering this last flight. I flew Rex's B737 from SYD-OOL and back, and they were both fantastic flights with excellent service. Rex is an incredible airline, and it's a real shame to see them disappear from the domestic market. There are no winners from this outcome besides Qantas and Virgin, who are probably popping champagne bottles. At least Rex is still operating their vital regional flights. I wish Rex all the best, and hope for the best possible outcome for them.

Thanks, Rory, for taking this flight and sharing it with us. I am hoping that Rex can be saved and that their regional flights will remain. The problem seems to be their inability to secure slots at the major city airports for the 737's . This is a frequent occurrence over the past few years with our low-cost airlines such as Compass as an example. Qantas and Virgin like to have the monopoly in the big cities, which lessens their competition.

Don’t know what going on with the Airline industries in Australia, but it seems very similar to Canada. Low-cost small airlines have a hard time surviving in larger countries with a small population. Government rules and regulations in both countries make it hard. This is very sad about Rex Airline. Spoke to a friend today who works in the industry and has friends who have lost their jobs at Rex. They told me that two big problems with Rex were that they didn’t setup a frequent flyer program early enough and their airport lounges just weren’t that good (if they even existed). Corporate travellers are big money to airlines operating between the capital cities, and those passengers want their loyalty rewarded.
Rex don’t really have a need for business lounges or loyalty programs on their regional operations, because they’re providing an essential service to the communities they fly to. But once you start playing on the “big boy” routes, they are a must if you want to win over the corporate market.

History will be divided over whether REX was greedy, stupid, or just over-opportunistic to try & replace Virgin. They tried to fill a hole but weren't counting on Virgin coming back. Their Saab regional opperations were comfortably profitable & perhaps they should have just stayed in their lane. But it's a bit rich to say "Our Heart is in the Country" on the side of domestic jets on major trunk routes between capital cities. Nothing "country" about that at all. Hopefully the administrators can untangle the mess & get them back to doing what they did best & eventually renew their turboprop fleet as well.

I am booked on Rex to fly BWT-MEL in September. As far as I know at this moment they are still keeping the regional routes going. Hopefully they won't go under. I'm not big on government bailouts but they should in this case. It is a convenience for me but a reliable regional airline is of vital importance to many.
Both Qantas and Rex used to fly out of Burnie-Wynyard until Qantas bailed and then Rex picked up the ball and ran with it. After the coof, though, Qantas muscled their way back in to grab some of the meagre pickings as the industry got back on its feet. I said then we needed to keep supporting Rex or we would lose it but I guess people are tempted by the slightly bigger plane and baggage allowance. I don't know how many other Rex routes they did that on, but it wouldn't surprise me if there were others. I don't believe that we can trust Qantas to stay if the going gets tough - I'm sure these routes will be the first to go if they need cut backs.
Fingers crossed that Rex can be saved.

I think the Fed/States may help bail out the regional services as an "essential service" in the outback regions, but REX's Jet services are pretty much history and are not "essential".

@@RTransportGuy Yes, I doubt they will ever be back. Unfortunately Rex gambled on Virgin going under and lost.
Pity though, because it makes great sense to come from a regional airport into one of the cities and be able to fly through to another on the same airline.
Saving the regional routes has to be the priority though.

Thanks for This Rory. I am a tad anxious about the many REx subsidiaries, two training schools, Pel air freight, NJS FIFO, and the catering division. If only they had let go of say one or two of the Golden Triangle slots and ran the 737to say Perth and or Adl Darwin they would have been swamped with pax fed up over here with QF and and Virgin gauging us

I don't think that the entire Rex operation will cease. The original regional network with the Saab340 aircraft should survive as it provides essential air travel outside the capital cities. Some (most?) intrastate routes are licensed by state governments who also provide subsidies where appropriate. Rex is still taking bookings for these regional services. Entering the interstate market in direct competition with Qantas and Virgin was always going to be a gamble and not really unexpectedly, Rex has gambled and lost. Hopefully the wonderful staff will find comparable employment elsewhere.

Kept fares competitive or overreached and risked cutting off a lot of regional locations from flights when they need them? Rex cut back on various regional routes last year while trying to maintain the capital city jet services. Capital cities still have at least two other airlines flying between them, but some regional locations went back to one only. If this means Rex returns to where their heart is then maybe this is good news.

It’s disappointing that the Australian market only has the ability to have two functioning major domestic airlines. I booked Rex for a future flight for that reason. I guess the only way to shake things up is high speed rail, which the airlines don’t want.

how about sleeper trains. afterall you go to sleep as you leave sydney and wake up as you arrive into Melbourne. And for regional areas, maybe instead of airlines, perhaps a regional airline that flies cessnas as a air uber. It could even land and pick you up from private airstrips.

    • @Joshlama
