Speaking as a drummer, one of the most impressive things about Rick is the fact that after the accident (with one arm) it never changed his sound. Who he is as a musician never changed. If you don't know when each song was released you'll never be able to tell by his sound. Impressive!
Rick Allen is a great drummer. His best work can be heard on the first two albums, On through the Night and High and Dry, especially High and Dry. As far as his drumming on Pyromania, Hysteria for sure, this is not Rick Allen playing. It is a Fairlight instrument sampler (drum machine). Rick did come back and play the real cymbals on Pyromania but they programmed a drum machine for all his parts on these albums. This at the time (1982) had nothing to do with his arm as that event took place on New Years eve, 1984, two years later. So not to burst anyones bubble, but the reason his drumming didn't change was it was not him.

I just wanna say R.I.P. to the RIFFMASTER Steve Clark. He was their guitarist before he sadly passed away from alcoholism in 1991 at only 30 years old. If it weren’t for him, Def Leppard wouldn’t have these amazing bangers that they had in the 80s. Just listen to that main riff! Inspired by Led Zeppelin’s “In The Evening”. Musical genius gone too soon! ❤❤❤
Yes!!! I saw that at the movies when I was in high school! My friend and o got a laugh out of the “foreplay” bit where he says the bit about being immortal and has her stab him and the next scene has them in bed
My grandma was in her late 70’s when this came out and I remember her saying in her prim and proper English accented voice “I don’t mind this at all”. She liked them more when she found out they were an English band. On a side note. My grandma was like Mrs Doubtfire and would play frisbee in a dress.

I started college when “Sugar” was out. Feeling old! I lived Pyromania in junior high. Wait. They don’t have junior high anymore. Feeling old again! 😂😂😂
Photograph and F-F-F-Foolin were my fave from this Pyromania album, one of the best albums from one of the best bands from the 80's. To this day these now classics still give me the goosebumps. Always loving your reactions guys! Cheers!
YES!!!! You now get it! Rock and Roll was a lifestyle not just music. You absorbed every bit of it and made it part of you. Hair, Clothes, Language all of it. It was such a great time to be a teenager! You should delve more into their early catalog. The first 2 albums are the raw Def Leppard
The first time I heard this as a kid I heard the beginning buildup & explosion I knew it was insane. As a kid I had no idea what I was listening to but I knew it was such a banger. I made the face, clapped my hands, & rocked out without even knowing what I was doing 😂. So iconic.
When talking about 80s Def Leppard, fans often forget to mention Robert John "Mutt" Lange. He produced the albums High 'n' Dry, Pyromania, & Hysteria. Even co-wrote all of the songs in the latter two, which are both certified diamond in America, plus Adrenalize except for one track. Easily one of the most successful music producers of all time, generating or co-generating other diamond & multiplatinum albums for Shania Twain, AC/DC, Foreigner, The Cars, Bryan Adams, etc...
I saw a news piece about a producer named Max Martin a while ago and it really opened my eyes to how much influence producers can impose, especially producers who are also songwriters. Made me think about people like Mutt Lange and George Martin and Phil Spector in a completely different way.
@@55itsme You can definitely notice the hip hop influence in Michael Jackson's Dangerous as opposed to the more melodic Off the Wall, Thriller, & Bad; which were co-produced by Quincy Jones.
Pyromania is one of the greatest rock albums EVER! It’s just insanely great from start to finish! Right up there with AC/DC-Back In Black among the absolute best albums EVER!
The opening line for this song ( Gunter, glieben, glauchen, globen ) was done by producer Robert “Mutt” Lange. It’s is nothing more than German sounding gibberish to represent the traditional “1, 2, 3, 4”. It made the song sound much more intriguing and mysterious and it definitely did the job.
As crazy as it may sound, I don't think you are too far off comparing Def Leppard to the Bee Gees, especially when you think of the harmonies and the range Joe Elliott's voice has. So cool to see Amber digging it as well 🤘Excellent reaction!
When this album 'Pyromania' was recorded in 1982, Rick Allen (drums) was only 19 yrs old (He had both arms, as it was before his accident in late 1984)... and he was always regarded as the best musician in the band.
Def Leppard is by far my favorite band from that era, and the most concerts I attended back in the day out of any band! I can see you guys right next to me standing in the crowd, singing along w/ a cigarette lighter lit high above your head! Their concerts were a blast! Love y'all!
"Gunter Glieben Glauten Globen." Actually doesn't translate into anything but the producer got tired of saying "1,2,3,4..." so he said this & the band liked it & left it in.
Huge huge huge fan of Def Leppard, starting way back with High N Dry album! My intro into rock was "Bringin On The Heartbreak" on MTV. Bought this on CASSETTE the day it came out. Rode my bike (I was 14) about a mile to Hastings to get it! Thanks for the memories!

I take my granddaughters (and do pick up) to school everyday. We find one good song to jam up our day. My youngest girl (she's 6 yrs old) REALLY loves Def Leopard. I've told her the story of the drummer, so she feels she "knows"them now. 😉 We listen to all kinds of music & I'm introducing them both to the best of my music journey! And, a good song has the power to create a great, energized start to the day! 🧡
I remember watching a "VH1 Storytellers" that featured Def Leppard. After telling the story, they started playing the song & Joe forgot the lyrics. The audience helped him though it.
I remember Jordan reacting to this song. And when he reacted to The Offspring's Pretty Flie For a White Guy, he immediately recognized the intro line of Rock of Ages. I still don't know what is being said and what it really means. I heard in an interview that music producer Mutt Lange (Shania Twain's now ex-husband) got tired of counting 1, 2, 3, 4, so he made up this phrase and for some reason it is on the record. Def Leppard sometimes jokes about it and says it means we should buy their albums.
When my nephew was 4 or 5, this came on the radio while we were driving into town. He called it “Rock-a-by Bages.” Every time he did, my wife and I would laugh, then he would laugh, and we’d get going even more. He’s 26 now. He stopped by to visit yesterday. I love him to death and still enjoy sharing so many little stories like this with him.

'I have something to say, it's better to burn out than to fade away' is a great line for the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. It's a line they was used in the first Highlander movie by Clancy Brown from 1986. Those first few words of the track 'Gunter glieben glausen globen' is also used on the intro to 'Pretty Fly for a White Guy' by The Offspring. Great choice 👌

The phrase spoken at the beginning, was actually (producer) Mutt Lange who came up with that," Allen said via a video posted to the band's official account. "He was getting so tired of saying '1,2,3,4' whenever we counted in. He wanted to inject a bit of humor in there." As for the specific language, Allen says that it was also Lange's creation. "I guess 'Gunter gleiben glauchen globen' is some Germanic-sounding language.
I grew up listening to Def Leppard and still love listening to them today. Timeless Rock at its finest. One of my favorite bands of all time. As always, thanks for the trip down memory lane. Keep Rocking!
Def Leppard is #1 on my list of RnR groups from the 80's. There are so, so many good ones. If you haven't already, check out Cinderella and songs like Shake Me, Gypsy Road, and Somebody Save Me. Also since Amber likes the sax so much I urge you to check out Urgent by Foreigner.
When Def Leppard came out. My friends and I back in high school had to start coming up with new categories for rock music. Since we were always arguing over which band was the best rock band. We still use these categories today. AC/DC of a course head banging Rock, Pink Floyd psychedelic Rock. Def Leppard check the number one spot in the party rock. Their music was the anthem of my generation because we so loved to party in the 80s. Later we had to put in the category stadium Rock. And shuffle a few things around. It's been an evolution in progress LOL Rock on
So glad you both say how that your now converted. Rock and Roll is not just a genre of music. It is a look. A feeling. Rock and Roll is an attitude. A state of mind. Rock and Roll is a way of life. We are glad to be here with ya, every single day. I may not comment every time, but you can bet, this old rock and roller is right here supporting you's two guys, each time you bring us a new pick. Watchin and lovin ya. Keep a Rockin, guys. Take it easy. Go with God. Peace and love, y'all. I will be seeing you on the next.
This song was my intro to Def Leppard. I ran to my dad begging him to get me electric guitar lessons. He didn’t think I was serious 😅. It’s on my regular playlist to this day.
Amber! Your commentary near the end hit me hard: I a good way. Rock-n-Roll isn't just music. It's a way of life and memories. Absolutely: It makes up a lot of us being human. It made a lot to the person I am, as well. I absolutely adore ya'll analysis & take-away from all music presented on your channel. I've established a sort of tunnel vision to certain songs, but listening to your point of view opens my imagination even more. It's fascinating (to me) how a younger Gen absorbs the music of the past. Rock On !!
This one, or photograph were my first songs I heard, I was 14 or so I think, I never got to see them live, but this HAD to be the opening track for the set lists for their tour right? Awesome rock anthem 🔥😎💜
These four words that you hear at the start of "Rock of Ages", mean nothing, though the band sometimes jokingly claims it means "running through the forest silently". It's actually just German-sounding gibberish, said by producer Mutt Lange during one of the later takes of the song. Wikipedia
My first time too, and I'm 58 years old! But (as I've stated so many times) I really did not like this music back then. But now...... After watching & listening with you guys, I find that I've really warmed up to this genre, and that's thanks to you guys. 🔥🎼🎵❤🎸🥁
I remember listening to Casey Casem's top 100 countdown at the end of the year, and this song was number 1. And I said " What the hell?" I had not heard it before then, and didn't like it much either. I have come around.
Audio is fixed! Woo Hoo! Great job you guys, and another awesome reaction added to your channel. I love listening to your insights and banter back and forth! You're always so on point! 😉🤙
As one of the old timers who was a teen when this first came out, I still love this song / album / band and I still don’t know what those words at the very start mean in English.
Yes, this song is from their "Pyromania" album. Other songs from this album I encourage you to check out: "Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)", "Stagefright", "Die Hard the Hunter".
DL are great people. They have been through stuff. Their drummer losing an arm from a car accident. A guitarist that died and one that got cancer. With every thing they went through they stayed together. In the case of the drummer and the guitarist that got cancer they waited for them to get better and rejoin the band. They did not replace. That does not happen much now. Great band.
Teenager in high school when first came out, played at every high school dance, still just as awesome as the first time hearing it and yes had this on vinyl, so now ya'll know why our generation was always so cool, music connects every generation
Their first album, On Through the Night, had some great songs as well. Checkout: "Wasted" "It Could Be You" "Rock Brigade" "Answer to the Master" and "Hello America." The production has more of a "raw" sound to it (typical of most first albums). It's actually my favorite DL album (their later stuff I can barely listen to).
The opening lyric "Gunter glieben glauten globen" might sound like a foreign language, but it's not. It's just gibberish, and a different way to sound off "1, 2, 3, 4...". In the late 90s, The Offspring used this same line to open their song "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)".
I’m sure someone has mentioned this already but you have to watch rock of ages film, it’s such a feel good film and is obviously named after this song. Some amazing songs included in it x
The 80's were great, I was about 13yrs. old when this came out in 1983, I'm so glad I grew up in the 80's. I had a friend I grew up with, and his parents were great, they would let us have a good time, we had a backyard full of people and his parents would play their music they liked, like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, which was great because it exposed us to great music, and they danced and partied with our music, so it was like there was no us and them old farts, because they were still teenagers or young at heart. Music can bridge all divides, whether its age or race, and I'm glad I learned that at a young age. The other great thing also was my friends Dad worked at the Arena, and he would get us a couple of free Tickets for all concerts we wanted to go to, so thanks to him I seen pretty much all of the bands from the 80's on their early tours, and some were opening acts, before they were headlining their own shows, for example Guns n Roses opening for Aerosmith, Motley Crue opening for Ozzy.
I'm 45 so the 80s was definitely my era, and what I find interesting is that all the young folks in their 20s are wearing band shirts from the 70s and 80s. I think there's a reason for this. There was a study showing that the standard deviation of musical notes in music today is considerably lower than it was 30-40 years ago. To phrase this more academically, music today lacks creativity and harmony. You can't just strum a guitar and bang on drums randomly, right? There has to be a message and synchronicity and harmony and it all has to flow together, and when modern music fails to deliver that, people look for alternatives and since the future isn't here yet they're looking to the past. I think this parallels the movement of society to idealize acquiring as many things that have already been invented rather than to actually invent them. The world is becoming increasingly corrupt.
My introduction to hair bands. Not even sure that’s what it’s categorized as but I absolutely loved them right from the start. 1983 I was 14. Changed my life

"He was getting so tired of saying '1,2,3,4' whenever we counted in. He wanted to inject a bit of humor in there." As for the specific language, Allen says that it was also Lange's creation. "I guess 'Gunter gleiben glauchen globen' is some Germanic-sounding language.
according to Def Leppard, it is German gibberish that Mutt Lange came up with in the studio.
My first Def Leppard cassette tape 📼!! Love this song!! 🥰 💜👍🏻✊🏻🤟🏻
Rock of Ages was the first song I heard by Def Leppard. Too Late for Love is the song that got me totally hooked on them.
I grew up listening to Def Leppard and still love listening to them today. Timeless Rock at its finest. One of my favorite bands of all time. As always, thanks for the trip down memory lane. Keep Rocking!
DL was rocking in the 80’s and now with every generation.
If you want the real roots music of Def Leppard, listen to the album "High & Dry". The whole album ROCKS!
Def Leppard is prob my fave arena band. they just larger than life. the chorus to this song is raw power.
This is one of those rare songs that can always turn a bad mood around! It was used frequently in the comedy film, "Balls of Fury".
So dope on that movie!!
High N Dry is their best album by far!
These guys were so COOL ...The ultimate definition of Rock Stars...the albums were good too😘
I Love Def Leppard! And Rock of Ages is my all time favorite!!
LOL! The look on Amber's face at the very beginning of the song!
Yes, Cinderella....they are my all time FAVORITE
Def Leppard and Cinderella!
my favourites too!
They did Urgent. Talking bout Sax. A real good song is, Find another fool by Quarterflash. Check it out. One of the best rock songs. With a Sax solo.
I've been a fan of Def Leppard since my early teens.
I always liked Def Leppard
When Def Leppard came out. My friends and I back in high school had to start coming up with new categories for rock music. Since we were always arguing over which band was the best rock band. We still use these categories today. AC/DC of a course head banging Rock, Pink Floyd psychedelic Rock. Def Leppard check the number one spot in the party rock. Their music was the anthem of my generation because we so loved to party in the 80s. Later we had to put in the category stadium Rock. And shuffle a few things around. It's been an evolution in progress LOL Rock on
Def Leppard’s High and Dry, and Pyromania are probably my all time favorite albums of all time, not one bad song on either of those albums 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I saw them live, and they put on an impressive show.
This song was my intro to Def Leppard. I ran to my dad begging him to get me electric guitar lessons. He didn’t think I was serious 😅.
It’s on my regular playlist to this day.
This was considered HARD back in '83
You really need to see the official video. I wasn’t into rock music until this song came out. I became a rock and def Lep fan instantly.
Rock On !!
I saw Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Poison and Joan Jett at Comerica Park in Detroit last August. Def Leppard sounded just like the record, they Rocked!
Wikipedia
Def Leppard Dallas Texas 1987 December 13th my first concert with lasers something I'll never forget one of the best stadium bands bar none.
High school my Ford mustang jamming down the road blasting def Leppard...oh the memories
This song brings that energy. Man... it's perfect! 🤘
Easily my favorite Def Leppard song. Great reaction! 😎
This came out in 89 and was the year I graduated high school!! So many memories!!
Pyromania is a legit album. Love “Too Late for Love” and “Die Hard The Hunter”. 🤟🤟🤟
Hell yes, no one does Die Hard The Hunter.
First Def Lep song I ever heard, I was 3 apples high. And I was an immediate fan.
Definitely my favorite Def Leppard song!!!!!!!!!!
Yesss! Love Def Leppard and love this song ( video too) and soooo many others of theirs- 🤘🏼. 🤎🧡
I saw them in concert during the early 90's and it was the best concert I ever saw🎸🎸
My introduction to hair bands. Not even sure that’s what it’s categorized as but I absolutely loved them right from the start. 1983 I was 14. Changed my life
The striking of the match at the end is a classic ending!
This song was my intro to Def Leppard in the 80's.
I listened to this album so much I know the next song up…comin under fire 🔥🎶
the chorus to this song is the catchiest thing def leppard has ever done
this song is a banger
Clancy Brown quotes these opening lyrics "It's better to burn out than to fade away" in the movie "Highlander".
