I live near a large Hasidic Jewish community and have had a lot of questions and misjudgments about them. I just love watching your videos because they help answer my questions! God bless!
I just discovered your videos and I love them. Your messages are usually to the point and covered quickly (this particular topic has been talked about in my house for years and this being a youtube video you only have so much time) in short, my feelings are that you have covered your topics beautifully and directly. I truly have enjoyed your insight on what it is to be a jewish lady in modern times. Thank you. :)
I'm not Jewish, but I am a practicing Mormon woman and my religion is often viewed by others as being sexist. I have never been made to feel or taught that I am not equal to a man, in fact just the opposite. Women and motherhood are to be revered and admired just as much as men and fatherhood. I really appreciate what you said about neither one being better or worse, just different.
I believe that somwhere in the Jewish Scriptures it says that women were not made from Adam`s forehead, that she should be over him, nor from the sole of the foot that women should be under men, but rather woman was made from Adam`s rib so that she should be at his side. For me this implies that Men and Women were created to be equal partners in life.
My mother in law an orthodox Jewish physical therapist once went to give a talk. And took a Shulchan Aruch (code of jewish law) and asked them what they new about it. The general answer was about the synagogue and not anything else. She said that in the book less than 10 percent is about the synagogue and what most people talk about is that in the synagogue they can't do things together. But the fact is as you said most of what goes on is the women. and they are called the crown of the house.
This is all true but you get into sexist language when you seperate men and women for prayer because “men might get distracted”, which is at its core over sexualized women and even girls.
@Lyco499499 i did speak a bit fast in this one - you are correct. was just trying to get a lot of info in at once! i slowed down in later videos, though. check 'em out! :)
it's true - which is why i've written about the topic more extensively on jewinthecitydotcom. these videos are not meant to convey all the nuances of any issue - they're to give people a start, in case some want to learn more. as of yet, i've found that the medium of videos cannot give over the same depth as the written word, so i invite viewers to check out the blog as well!
Very good, it's what I've known all along. I'm glad there are entertaining videos like this one to help jews and non jews alike, understand an important issue.
I think the question is "Is orthodox Judaism inherently sexist" and not so much whether or not it can be sexist. Of course it can be. Basically all religion can be, but is it inherently sexist? No. I agree with another comment that the issue is much more complex.
I have never heard this about Jews. It has always been my understanding that Jewish woman I know are usually grad school or highier. I do not see Jewish woman with 9 or 10 kids. I have never heard this stero type.
i agree. i breast feed in real life, though i wasn't nursing a baby when we filmed this and holding up a baby doll to my body seemed kinda weird! the bottle was not best case scenario but it was the best workaround for the situation.
I think you brought it to a point I'd like to add: when god created the woman he created her out of the side/rib of the men, not out his head or his feet - means the woman was created as a companion to stand on the mens side and not above or below him. I love your point of saying that woman are just "different" but not lesser! In my exprerience, talking about any conservative religion, if a husband treats his wife not in a very respectful and loving manner, he did not understand his own religon.
@rlam86 it was meant as a joke, in the U.S when we say that a woman is "barefoot and pregnant" it's another way of saying that she's repressed. what i was trying to say is that Orthodox Jewish women are NOT barefoot and pregnant. (well, sometimes we are, but not in a repressed sort of way! ;)
@Dessybaby1233 the only comment i saw from you was on the message board of the channel and it's up. to answer you're question, more videos are coming....
Well spoken! As a Christian, I actually get asked the same question a lot. I'll be sure to point them to your vid., because this is one area where we definitely see things the same way. Mennonite women run the home too : )
Excellent point about that eventhough the two genders have different roles, they are still Both Important in serving the One Above Also, good point that the home is very important in Jewish life. For example, when we light Shabbos candles before the sun goes down and bring in Shabbat. And later have a meal with family and friends
what I don't understand is why you cover your real hair with fake hair. what's the difference?? and it's not just you, obviously. most women I know who cover their hair wear wigs.
@krumbleton the rules of what men & women do apply across the board, so there are some ritualistic things that all women are exempt from regardless & not having kids wouldn't change that. however when a woman is in her child rearing years, her obligation to pray becomes much smaller. for a woman w/o children, she would still pray the regular amount & maybe even use the opportunity to learn more Torah. a great example of this is Nechama Leibowitz who never had kids but was a great Torah scholar.
I LOVE these videos. I've watched them all in the same sitting, and I'm impatient for more!! My question about this vid: If a Jewish woman doesn't have children, does that mean she must make up for it by fulfilling the same ritualistic obligations as the men?
thank you! i was not trying to criticize you or anything, i hope you don't think that. but i looked on your web site and i think i understand now. thank you for replying.
i love every single thing you said about women in this video. it is very charming and empowering at the same time. bottom line - women rule and i think you ladies should make song "woman" by etta james your official anthem i mean with the lyrics "davy crockett king of the wild frontier - i could tame him down if he was here", how can you go wrong?
This explanation is an oversimplification of the issue. The truth is a lot more complicated.
You're kind of over-simplified the issue. Women are not treated as equals in Orthodox Jewish society. The Torah would, but the community doesn't.
I live near a large Hasidic Jewish community and have had a lot of questions and misjudgments about them. I just love watching your videos because they help answer my questions! God bless!
I've never heard the part about God creating things in order of complexity, but I love it-- it makes total sense. Thanks for sharing.

I an Eastern Orthodox Christian , I love your videos. They are so informative and so well done. You are a delight!
It is amazing how many misconceptions can be cleared up in just a few minutes.

Thank you for this wonderful series. I am learning so much about Orthodox Judaism. The videos are informative, well done and fun!

I'm not Jewish, but I really appreciate your videos. Thanks for making your educated and insightful perspective on Judaism so accessible!
Love this video!! It's so frustrating when people mistake women's roles in Judaism as being lesser than men. May G-d bless you and your cause!

Mayim Bialik still looks as young as she did on "Blossom". Amazing.

I see your point. Good explanation.
I think you brought it to a point

Great question. Please visit JewintheCitydotcom and look up "Isn’t Wearing a Wig Over Hair (Especially if the Wig is Nicer Than the Hair) Pointless?"

I'm not jewish, but this was quite enlightening.
you do not create life , you merely shelter life until it is able to sustain its self , while the life seed is created by men
Wow!! I was looking forward to a new video!! Thank you!!
I love this series! You remind me so much of my Rabbi back in college....... except, not a 60 something man from New York.
@quelita1971 this video is specifically about Orthodox Jewish women
Genesis - "; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.' {S} " Hmmm. I wonder how was man(Adam) to rule over women(Eve).

@jewinthecity Orthodox Jewish women are Jewish women, and there are many Jewish women (and men) with 9 or 10 kids.

I guess she got hold of her boy friend Sheldon's Blossum doll. He will be very upset she took it out of the box, now he can't say it is mint anymore.

wonderful, perfect explanation my daughters saw this too and loved it so great
thank you! i was not trying to criticize you or anything, i hope you don't think that. but i looked on your web site and i think i understand now. thank you for replying.
Perfect! Father cuts the challah but mother tells him how to do it. Queen chess piece is most powerful - not the king
Is that Amy Farrah Fowler??
Yes. It's her/Blossom/Mayim lol
I love this series!
no
Yay cool you're back with a video (^_^). That was cool.
yes
Great as usual!:)
women are godly, i concur
This makes perfect sense. :)
@sarale555 it's in the works! :)
That's funny. I was just wondering about that yesterday and here is part of my answer! hehe!
i love every single thing you said about women in this video.
it is very charming and empowering at the same time.
bottom line - women rule
and i think you ladies should make song "woman" by etta james your official anthem
i mean with the lyrics "davy crockett king of the wild frontier - i could tame him down if he was here", how can you go wrong?
What happened to my comment?
I want a Blossom doll!!
@vieus4free but blossom was so adorable and beautiful
Why when you comment that women can sustain life you then feed the baby with a bottle? Breastfeeding would have made so much more sense.
@NWLCJ325 i couldn't agree with you more :)
i love this video and i agree to it
Woah, I love the way you just explained a 5hrs explanation in 3 minutes.. Women.. Single? :D jk..
:)
