- JewintheCity.com Does Judaism believe in life after death? There are so many rumors squirling around, including the idea that Judaism does not believe in the afterlife. This is not true! While Judaism certainly does believe in life after death, it is not like other conceptions of it in other religions. Heaven and hell are actually the same place. Watch this video to understand how.

Although I am an atheist, I have the greatest respect for Judaism than any other religion. Two reasons. 1. They live in the present,not longing for death and the torture of non-believers. 2. They don't try to ram their religion down other people's throats, knocking on doors and setting up stalls. So, all respect to you, thanks for that.
I love these videos. I'm a possible convert into Judaism, and these are quite informative. Of course, I'll be even more informed after a year or more of study with a rabbi! Those videos are really well done. I'd notice if they weren't too. I'm a filmmaker among other things.
Thanks. You're right, it's not mentioned in Tanach, but it is all over the Talmud. Judaism is not a religion that focuses on the afterlife. We're very much about this world. There are, however, hints as to what it's like which I tried to show with this video.
when i say "share" i mean, a "portion" - that's the lingo that's used, meaning they have a place in the world to come (olam haba) and yes, to my knowledge their experience is according to their deeds as described in the video

This almost sounds like the Orthdoox (Christain) view on the afterlife.
All who die will forever experience the love and presence of God.
Those who love God will experience joy, bliss in his presence (heaven)
Those who hated God, will experience pain and torture in his presence (hell)
You are quite mistaken. There are any number of verses I might cite but I think the path of least resistance is to ask the following question: In the Book of Samuel, King Saul had the witch of Endor raise Samuel's spirit so that he might inquire of it. If there's no afterlife in the Jewish Bible, where exactly was she supposed to summon the spirit from?
@MrSnobby24 the parable I used here was given over by an Orthodox rabbi to a class I attended years ago. I didn't include the part about Gehennom - which he likened to getting your shirt cleaned before you could enter the concert - there just wasn't time to get into it as the video was already long. But the idea is that where we spend eternity can be heaven-like, hell-like, or something in between depending on the connection one had to God while in this world.

Hey I really enjoy watching your Videos. I'm christian (not really religous though) and I live in Switzerland where most of the jews are ultraorthodox so they appear a little odd to christians at first sight... But watching your blog brought me a whole diffrent perspective. Most of the Mizwas that appeared pretty silly to me made actually a lot of sense after your explanation... Thanks for opening up my mind! Keep up with the good work!
ok, what do you mean by "share", are they in the olopaba, or do they return to dust? And if they are in the olopaba, do they experience pleasure/pain according to their deeds?
@fizk there is something called "gihenom" which we believe is a purification process you must undergo before you get to the "sitting in the presence of Godliness" part - if you were a worse person, gihenom is a longer, more painful process, if you were a better person, it's not as bad, but once that's over, we don't believe in a separate heaven and hell - we're all in the same "place" - we just experience it differently.
I've watched this video over and over again because at first I didn't quite understand - but now I completely understand and I'm in awe. It is the single best message about the Afterlife that I have ever received from any religion or individual. It makes perfect beautiful sense. You have an amazing gift for sharing the treasures of Judaism! Loving your channel. :-)

I think that your explanation is something that we all can understand. I don't consider myself religious, but from what I have gathered from going to many Torah classes for years is that nothing in Judaism is simple or easy and it is this very thing that makes it special. I think that other religions have taken things from Judaism and have made them more accessible, but IMHO the complications of Judaism, especially birth and death (and everything in between) make it unique. I just wish that rituals could retain their freshness for individuals who do them mechanically.

Very interesting! A little similar to Catholic teaching, but with obvious differences. We believe that nothing but pure good can withstand the full presence of G-d, so for many, at death, may need to spend time in Purgatory, where the soul is prepared for the fullness of G-d's presence. The unrepentant sinner who hates G-d gets his wish, and spends eternity barred from divine bliss.

I do not know how I stumbled on to your videos, but I find them very interesting. I was raised as a Protestant Christian, but always had an interest in the Jewish people. A lot of wrong information gets spread around about all cultures. People generally beleive whatever they hear and do not bother to learn the real truth. I, however, am one that always wanted to hear the real truth from a reliable source. Thank you for sharing.

life is eternal. only time and circumstances change. and yes those who practice Judaism have an afterlife. God promised that to all humankind. we never really die. we just change and go on. much like a metaphorhosis. we are born again. faith is the key hope is the future and understanding is the answer. to all people I wish you these attributes. and love above all else!
@fizk :) just to be clear, though, if a person lives a life antithetical to Godliness, we believe that there will be plenty of pain having to be so close to God in the world to come. The difference between Jewish and Christian thinking is that for us, there's not an idea of a devil that acts as a force separate to God or a hell that is separate from the rest of the afterlife. We believe that everything (the satan included) is under God's rule, control, etc.

So Heaven is like going to a classical concert? This reminds me of Herman Wouk's This Is My God. He descibes his experience of the services of the synogogue as being like going to an opera. Some people are passionate for opera & love every moment, every note. Some people just show up to be seen.

honestly i am somewhere in between. I love your message tho because I was raised a catholic and basically loathe it and all the priests who stand with it (sorry i will most likely get flamed). I have always had a fondness for Jewish people for many reasons i wont get into here but lets say I move into the Jewish religion and I am gay will I "hate the light" and be sent to a lets say "hell"?

You may be interested to know that Orthodox Christianity shares this exact belief. It came before Roman Catholicism (and the Roman Catholic doctrine of original sin, later passed down to Protestantism) and thus the need to be baptised in order to be 'saved' has never existed. @JohnnyRock2000 exactly - if you spend your life making yourself into a Godly person (i.e. a good person) being in God's presence is amazing. but if you spend your life doing things that are unlike God, then being in God's presence would be painful.
