Outstanding! A real pleasure to watch, these guys do it right. The fact that with all the hard rains, there were no leaks, is the best testament to the quality of design and workmanship that the WB's have provided on this project. As an experienced builder, I am aware of the challenges that exist in attaching a wooden structure to a masonry one and maintaining a weathertight connection between the two. It is no small task. Well done guys!
That is literally over the top, I’ve never seen anything like what you’ve built, and built well. It is a showpiece, so beautiful with the colors of the windows, the roof, the cedar siding and trim with the masonry, stunning! Well done guys, well done!!!
So much content in one video and very interesting, you brothers work really hard together and it shows in this incredible build,. Well done, i truly hope more and more people get to see your workmanship, really great quality work and content
Years ago the state of Florida built some cedar sided cabins in a state park. Then they stained that beautiful siding gray... looked like S___! Please use a finish like Flood CWF ( clear wood finish), it guards against weathering and graying and enhances the natural beauty of the Cedar. GREAT WORK on a fantastic project. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Thanks for following along! We are using a clear wood finish on all the cedar and ash. The graying of cedar does look good one some builds but we’d like to try to preserve the natural cedar look for this job
I found this at pt15 and I’m only a few seconds in. I just want to say this already looks dope. 6:35 that OH NO! made me smile far more than it probably should have.
Will never trust reels of Facebook that share things and the site were not under your name! Didn't push any like buttons on the reels but I do it here! You guys are amazing!
I saw this thumbnail and I just thought that I need to check this out and you know what. I'm not disappointed, it looks awesome. I wouldn't mind living in something like that. Truly nice idea and work.😊👍
What a beautiful addition and conversion. To maintain the circular structure have you considered adding a spiral staircase to access the upper floors? In an earlier video you left an opening in the floor of the top floor to see the dome and beam structure. A spiral up through the opening would allow access and maintain the view as well. Wishing you and your team a great week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather. Peace
Thanks @catgynt9148! We are going to do a spiral staircase in the addition area and then a ladder to go from the middle floor to the top floor. We were thinking of coming up through the opening but didn’t want to lose a lot of space and the view to the top. It’s still an option coming up through the floor opening but we’ll see how the ladder works first. Thanks for following along!
Facebook shafted me, it showed part of this makeover and left us hanging in the end. I’m greatful I googled and found your guys’ channel so I can see this project through to the end, you guys do awesome work & brother Matt is good comic relief lol. The other brother who always yells at Matt reminds me of my older sister who’d always bust my balls for the smallest of things😂
Such a great build. Watched all your videos from the first up to here in a couple days. While the build goes forward rapidly, so does the quality of the videos. Didn't even have to take out my earbuds (my taste for music is different from you young peoples taste) and loved the sound of working men and tools. Wished I could live in such a silo, it's amazing guys.
Absolutely Amazing ❤❤❤ In my country there are many Old Sugar Factory that are closed now, making something out with your project would be stunning, keep it up guys, well done ❤❤❤
Looks great. The project is coming along nicely. I would have done only two things differently for aesthetics. First, I would have dropped the windows slightly. I would have aligned the top of the window rough openings with the door rough opening. (Usually about 81 1/4", but it depends on the actual door). Set the door first to determine the exact installed top trim elevation. Then set the windows, being careful to match up that established top trim elevation. It looks better when all openings in close proximity share a consistent header height, at least in my opinion for whatever that's worth. Second, I love cedar siding and I think it was an appropriate choice. However, I would have chosen a wider product, installed vertically. A wider product makes the siding less 'busy' on a relatively small structure. Running it vertically would have shortened the length of each individual siding piece, and allowed more pieces to be used to establish the pattern. Look at the front facade above the door and below the three windows on the second level and consider how many more rows of siding would fit vertically as opposed to horizontally. It's the same square footage regardless, but the number of repeated elements creating a pattern is much different. Also, it's a tall, narrow structure, and the vertical siding will make it appear taller. And, the barn next to it has vertical siding, so it would be more consistent with the surroundings to have vertical siding. Again,, that's just my opinion. I would have definitely used a roughsawn cedar siding. I can't wait to see a video of the finished product.
Hi Mike, Yeah looking at it now it would’ve looked better matching the top heights of the windows with the doors but we were trying to maintain a certain height from the floor to the bottom of the windows. That’s a great idea for the siding and something we never really considered. It makes sense running the siding vertically especially for this type of job. Thanks for the input!
I agree with the other commenters that said that the cedar siding should have gone vertically instead of horizontally so it would match the barn better. With it horizontal it’s kinda giving modern cabin vibes in my opinion which don’t perfectly sync with the rustic barn and silo. However, I will say it was done very well and does look good! Cedar is a favorite wood of mine, I love how beautiful and enduring this wood is! Cheers guys!
Incredible build; it looks amazing so far. But I am always shocked at how flimsy the doors in the US are. Ok, maybe I am just spoiled and used to German doors, which could probably be used as safe doors. But holy sh*t, that entire Build is just a Joy to watch.
Thanks for following along! Yeah there are quite a few cheap/flimsy products to choose from these days. We went with some that are more on the sturdy side but there’s probably some more durable options out there, especially in different parts of the world
Great job, looks great. What a fun project. You guys do good work. I occasionally see others helping you and your brother, are they other brothers or just friends?
We ended applying an epoxy water proofing membrane 12” up from the roof that matches the color of the silo and prevents any water from being absorbed into the concrete as well, thanks for watching!
Thanks! Shouldn’t sink or collapse. It has been standing sturdy for 115 years with no signs of falling over. Not in a tornado heavy area but we’ve been known to get a few. It’s actually located on top of a hill which is why our videos are often so windy sounding so we’re a little worried about lightning striking the roof over a tornado taking it down.
Saw a short of this project at random on my FYP; loved the vibe reminded me of a project I did In Umbria - though the stone tower was from 1300! Am extremely impressed by your awesome design & the amazing woodworkmanship(if there's a better description, I don't know it also I'm super dyslexic,so apologies from any mistakes that got missed. Am now subscribed & looking forward to catch up with previous & future projects.Very best wishes to all of you & yours ; it's a superb & beautiful job kudos,to everyone involved💥👊👏👏👏👌❤️💯⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✌️
The project is both creative and interesting - I am wondering if you have a specific reason for framing out exterior window openings and the door to patio with double king studs with a "floating" header, rather than conventional king and jack studs either side supporting headers? Anxious to see it completed - think it's going to be pretty unique!
Thanks! There’s not a major need to use conventional jack/trimmer studs around the doors/windows since there’s not a structural load pushing down on the door/window headers. The large 8x8 beams carry the load of the roof and support the second floor so we mostly just need the studs there for screwing the windows, doors and siding to.
Is it normal to send nails through the bottom of the row of siding like that? Usually the nails are at the top and covered by the siding above? This would be stronger, going through both pieces, but water might be an issue.
This was actually our first time doing cedar siding so we’re not exactly sure but pounding the nails near the bottom of the siding board to hold two boards in at once seemed like it would hold up better against the strong winds. We weren’t too concerned about hiding the nails but we made sure we hit an inside stud to help keep everything nice and and sturdy
are your skills passed down from your pops or where did you get the skills at such a young age.. top notch skills guys glad to see young men taking up the trades .. keep up the good work.
We did some stick frame rough carpentry in high school for a contractor and really enjoyed it so we decided to pursue woodworking in all forms on the side and basically learn from our mistakes as we got older, thanks for watching!
1 Error. All the window casements are wrong. You used an inside finish on the exterior. Vertical members should not butt on top of lower horizontal casement, but be inset, like you did around upper floor door ( exception, if you added flashing).
I really really like what you guys have been doing, you guys have turned this thing into a piece of art. I found your channel and have been watching ever since.. My only concern tho is that you guys are missing all the Jack/trimmer studs for your doors and windows.. that might cause serious issues down the road

Wow! I just found your channel and have been binge watching the videos. I have the same type of stone silo attached to my barn that is a winery in Pa and wanted to make the silo into an airbnb. Cheers. What state are you in?
Hahaha ya we are not sure how to prevent that from happening yet and it doesn't help that most of it makes no sense for what was actually happening, Thanks for watching!

Hi Jurek, we’re still checking out all the standards but we’ll likely be building our own spiral staircase out of large timbers. bravo
Thought and comment: Don't let OSHA representative see this video.
How did you flash/waterproof between the house wrap and posts/stone walls?
We used both a combination of flashing tape and caulk, thanks for the watching!
The best (proper) way is to cut an angled groove into the stone/masonry to slide the flashing into and add caulking to seal.
