In this review of the M1 Mac Mini and M1 Macbook Air, I discuss the accessories that will help you get the settings the M1 is capable of so that you can get the best performance out of your setup. I also wanted to follow up on a recent (short) video where I talked about the refresh rates with the different connections with USB-C, HDMI and DisplayPort.
I ran a few tests both on the M1 mini and the Macbook Air and was able to get the same results when it came to the cables I used to connect to the external display.

Sure thing. And as far as the television, from the other comment, that text will be pretty blurry. For the price, and wanting some reasonable nits, and the aspect ratio, let me think for a sec because I don’t have a slam dunk option that I’m thinking about. Dell makes some really nice ultrawides, and that might be a direction. I have to find the model number because there’s one that many have often stated that it worked with their Macs.

Just wanted to tell you how much I love all your videos. Also I got a CalDigit TS3 Plus after watching some of your videos and looking at all the products. This is the best thing I ever did for my current 13" Macbook Pro and I look forward to using it on a new M1 Macbook Pro hopefully sometime later this year :-)

Alright friends. Let me know how it's going with your setups. And, as far as that HDR issue where it's toggled on in the OS as well as the Display itself, just keep in mind that this could be a varied experience among displays. This is where you'll need to experiment and correct if you need to as the OS and hardware of the display may be competing with/against each other. Keep rocking faces.

I'm running a crg9 and it seems like the quality is not the best using a Cable Matters USB C to Displayport adapter. Running at 5120x1440 120hz. Colors look washed out, text looks a bit pixelated. I'm running the 16" 2021 MBP with M1 Pro

I want to create a two monitors setup, preferably 120hz (144 more likely), with one of the monitors being 4k, or just two of them being 2k and 144hz with hdr, that requires me having two DP monitors, and I cant find thunderbolt hubs that can do that. Because usually it’s an hmdi and a dp, but not like two dp.
I mostly do design work, photos, videos as well, so colors are important to me, and the high frequency is important more for a comfort, not games.
It’s a research mess for me right now, in other words, as I am planning to work on the yet unreleased macbook pro 16” (M2 or M1X, whatever it will come with). And I would like to “dock” it, have access to all my peripherals, two monitors, and unplug it if I need to. Having to connect multiple cables makes me anxious.
Sorry if my comment is a mess, I’ve been thinking about it for a week, making a ton of research on monitors, on docs, on M1 connectivity.. d’uh
Maybe you can help me understand if I need to go 4k (more future proof but no high refresh rate). Hdr is also important for future hdr content creation. My budget is $500 for each monitor max (I live in Russia and we have inflated prices, so $500 turns into $1000 equivalent).

Very informative and helpful. Thinking of getting a 34inch instead of 27inch 4k, an all around monitor for photo/video editing and maybe some games. Also getiing my first Mac m1 computer, still torned if i should get the MBA or MBP or maybe just the mini.. lol i want a computer to have on my desk aswell as i can take it with me everywhere.
So the MBP would offer some benefit if you’re gaming and really not because of the chipset, because they’re all the same, but for the thermal management for an intensive task.

thanks for the informative video. I have always like the Mac Mini. I read some people having resolution issues with the M1 Mac Mini and ultra wide (super ultra-wide) monitors. Is that true? I currently have a Dell 49" super ultra-wide monitor whose resolution is 5120x1440. Could the M1 Mac Mini handle that resolution? I heard the previous models could but you would need to get an eGPU to do that.
If the MacBook Air can drive a 55” 4K television, then an ultra wide for the mini should work, however there may be issues with the cables. It’s possible. Using a passive USB-C cable vs using an active one. Also, a monitor should come with a high speed HDMI cable if it supports that HDR and higher refresh rate, but this may also be the case that the supplied cable isn’t sufficient.
This is a hypothesis of course.
Do you if it will work with my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015), OS X El Capitan as a monitor for the M1 Mac Mini?
I couldn’t get it to work on my much older (2009) iMac, which I was just trying to test, however with your setup you should be able to via a TB3 to TB2 (or display port) via target display.
I have the M1 MacBook Air I've been using the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adaptor and using a High speed HDMi cable I get 60fps are Full 4k Resolution of my monitor however I get a Weird Flickering issue. Has anyone else encountered this and if so has anyone been able to fix it?

Yeah, even though I’ve got the MBA I’m still using the iPad Air right now...so far. I try to keep it as a separate device for one business. That way I can keep the mini and MBA exclusively for creative work.
Although I do love editing photos on it.

I haven’t tested. 49” but others on here have said it works. USB-C in my opinion is the best, and the next best would be USB-C to Display port.

I don’t have the Apple Cinema Display, but it is a monitor with DVI. I believe you can also get one that connects via HDMI

So are you saying that buying a monitor with anything faster than 60hz can’t be used ? I’m mainly into web browsing , productivity , and occasional gorpro editing. Looking for a mid range monitor that is at least QHD, 31.5 or maybee a little bit smaller , able to open 2 x xls side by side and maybee play the odd game (been saying that for years and haven’t ) Also , if it had ports so I didn’t need to buy a hub ? Would love a USB C and A regular USB 3 Any thoughts ?

I’m literally (not kidding) in the middle of testing a gaming monitor that has a higher refresh rate. I’ve already filmed it and just need to cut it and upload.
Short answer, it’s not a 4K display, however it will run at a higher refresh rate.
The monitors in the description however are setups that I recommend and monitors that others have purchased and reported back as having a good experience with.
But some monitors will go higher on that refresh. It just depends, but minimum you should be getting 60.

Thanks for the detailed video! I'm having some problem connecting my M1 Macbook Air to my Prism+ W270 Pro monitor. The signal between the two devices keep flickering and nothing shows up on the monitor, is it a compatability issue? Would really appreciate if you could give me some tips!
How are you connecting it?
How did you get 3440 x 1440 on your monitor with HDMI? I can't get that resolution plus there's no audio control on the Mac. So, you'll have to adjust volume control on the monitor itself each time you want to change the volume level.
I tried USB C to Display as well. With this connection I got the 3440 x 1440 but no audio control. Any suggestion how to solve this issue?
For the resolution on the HDMI, which cable are you using? Meaning is it capable of carrying high speed throughout?
As far as the monitor audio, that is definitely a Mac issue (for awhile) there is a workaround. I need to find it.
I personally don’t use my speaker monitors because they are just terrible...Which I know most monitor speakers are. Not all, but most I’ve worked with.

I just got my mac mini m1 8gb yesterday and I'm using a Dell 27in 4K monitor. The ghosting is really bad. Been troubleshooting this non-stop and can't seem to find a fix. Do you guys have a similar issue?
Which model is it? Refresh rate? And then what about your settings? Anything like vsync or custom HDR settings activated?

I’m a proud owner of my M1 Mac Mini, currently using my old trusty Dell U2515H (1440p, 60hz) monitor. I’m considering switching to an ultra wide monitor, but it looks like M1 Mac Mini’s don’t really have the option to support higher refresh rates than 60hz at resolutions like 3440x1440..
If I’m not mistaken, your monitor supports 100hz but can you confirm that refresh rate is capped at 60?
I would love to use an ultra wide on something like 75 or 100hz but if 60hz is the M1’s Mac then I would rather get a single 4K display for more real estate 😊
Yeah, 60Hz is where it lands. If the M1 (when) supports EGPUs then we could see that get bumped. For editing video, I’m fine with 60 (personally) and as far as gaming is concerned, which I do very little of, I’m also fine with it because if I were really into it then a Windows machine is where I’d be...but yes, so far in all my testing it’s 60.
When i connect an external monitor the text is super pixelated with the Macbook Pro M1 Mini, connected with USB C and DisplayPort. My monitor is 144hz refresh rate. I've tried all the display settings but nothing ig fixing the blurry text. I've seen a bunch of people complain about it. Any ideas on a fix?

It’ll really depend on the monitor and the cable you’re using. It’s possible, but the limitation is unfortunately due to MacOS, but with certain monitors it can be possible.
Good Video Brother! Yeah, Turning on HDR from the display preferences in macOS washes everything out. Turning it on from the display looks great. 👍

@@KevinRossRN Haha yeah man, funny thing is I tried all the picture profiles on my monitor before but just kept it in on the factory default. Now watching your video I decided to switch it to HDR. 😂😁👍
Yeah, it really comes down to experimentation. I was finding that the HDR setting in the monitor was the closest to how the colors showed up on my UA-cam videos. It’s going to vary for everyone, but if folks are willing to spend a little time testing, they’ll definitely learn their monitor, but then it gets quicker every time they need to make a change.
I have a different setting for editing photos. 🤷♂️
@@KevinRossRN Lol yeah. HDR does look weird on some things. I’m trying to find that perfect color balance of how things looks on my iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Yeah, I tend to watch my video (before posting) on my screen, an Android device and then iPhone. Let’s just say they all have their own “look” which makes it very interesting for editing. I just rely more on my scopes, but still like to check it on those devices before publish.
Great video mate, how is the temperature after an hour-or-so of usage with the display running?
Thanks. As far as the temp, I’d you’re concerned about throttling, it’s fine because it’s not really working hard to drive that display. I’ve even run the Display through the M1 iPad Pro and it’s also fine, even when editing complex footage.
Thanks for the informative video, I am considering a low cost 4K 27” monitor and wanted to get your input. The monitor is an 27UK500-B and I would be connecting to a Mac M1 mini.
As an introduction to 4K for the price, it’s a decent option. I know many that don’t like the stand, but that might be splitting hairs, especially if you mounted it later on another stand.
Still loving this smooth vibe and the consistency of the audio is on another level. This alone makes a huge difference for the video 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 we surely would love a tutorial on the if possible 🙌🏻

I’m all for budget options. I think it’s a decent monitor for the price, however I believe their customer service is lacking. Based on what I know from other creatives that is.

You can via screen sharing as one option, but you'd likely need some type of monitor to at least get this all set up.

You should be fine with either the USB-C to DisplayPort or USB-C to HDMI. I personally prefer the DisplayPort option, but that’s just me. I do use HDMI as well, but I just color calibrate for video editing.
Every monitor has its hang ups, but just make tweaks where you need to within the monitor on screen display settings.

If I connect a monitor using USB-C will it also transfer data to any USB ports on the monitor. I would think so but wanted to check. I can then connect any external USB devices to the screen and just have one cable to the MacBook Air M1.

That's how my monitor is set up. So USB-C into the TB3 port, then I have a hub connected into the back of the monitor where I have my SD card reader and my audio interface, so typically, yes that should be the case when connected via USB-C.

I'n not sure if you mentioned it, but can't you just use a "high-speed" HDMI cable (i.e 2.1 cable)?
Yes, I did recommend that in the video. You’d want to utilize a high speed cable for sure because I’ve had folks reach out that couldn’t achieve 60, but they were using a slower cable...but yes, correct on that.

Hey Kevin, loving your channel and it's been really helpful in deciding what M1 to get. I've settled on a M1 Mini 16GB with 256GB of storage (still iffy on the storage but think I should be alright with using SSDs as you've mentioned in other videos). I'm still trying to figure out what would be the best monitor for me currently. I'm a filmmaker so primarily will be using it for editing and some occasional photography work. My budget left after the M1 Mini, a keyboard, and mouse is about $950. I notice you recommended the Benq 32" and might just save up a bit more for it but do you think it's worth it or should I go with that mid-tier curved LG you recommend. The extra space seems really nice but I'm hoping to get a monitor that'll stick around as I grow. Mostly just wanted to know your thoughts. Thanks for taking the time to help me out with this :)
Awesome having you around the channel. Much appreciated. So I personally eyed the BenQ for myself, and still considering it. It is actually a 4K monitor, whereas the LG is roughly the same spec as my Ultrawide, which has been fine for me. Both of those LG monitors are quite popular and I've had folks bounce back to let me know how much they like them.
I think the LG's would certainly serve you for awhile. As far as color accuracy you're likely going to come closer with the BenQ, but I'd say don't necessarily obliterate your budget if you don't have to, unless you're more serious about photography. What are you currently using?
@@KevinRossRN thanks for getting back to me so quickly man. I’m definitely more into filmmaking and do photography on the side to support it essentially. I want to deliver quality work so I’m trying set myself for that as I get better but I can also upgrade over time. Overthinking it all probably.
I think I might go with that mid tier one similar to yours. It’s good to know that’ll last awhile and maybe one day I’ll jump up to something even nicer. And honestly, those mid-tier monitors are good in my opinion. I think one of those things where when you’re starting out, as long as the color calibration is dialed in, you’ll be fine. And then, as you grow and if you’re doing more work where that kind of razor thin margin of accuracy is necessary, then you’re getting something that’s even beyond that BenQ.
Not to mention this technology is definitely taking another turn (for the better) where these panels are just going to be extraordinary and be a better long term investment because of the longevity they will have and the color science will be near “perfect.”

I have a problem. I have an ultra wide monitor and when using the scaled (yes I am pressing options too) the max resolution is much lower than I need and it just looks so blurry. I am connecting it via HDMI 2.0 from a thunderbolt adapter?
Does the monitor have any other connections besides HDMI?

Sometimes, especially with the Air.
MacOS unfortunately isn’t great with some monitors. I don’t have all the specifics of each monitor because there are so many, but definitely a handful. It’s just the way MacOS “communicates” with these monitors.
Anyway, my ultrawide is best with USB-C from the MBA or Display Port. Personally speaking that is.

If you’re going with the Dell, then I’d say on the photography side, if you can swing it, then the 2720Q will likely serve you better. Not to mention it’s USB-C and 4K IPS. Just my two cents.

Yeah, USB-C to HDMI should be a viable option. Do you have a HDMI to HDMI cable you can also test?
Ah, gotcha. There are so many monitors to keep up with, it can certainly be challenging. Wasn’t aware of that particular issue. I know Dell makes some great displays, but I also know that they don’t really test their monitors on Mac…they’ve even admitted this.
Hi Kevin, can I use the usb charging chord that I received with my M1 macbook air to connect to an external monitor ? Or do I need a thunderbolt only to get 65 w charging as well as display on the monitor?
Usually those are just power only and no data transmission. I believe I have a USB-C cable in the description that I’ve tested and use on the daily.

Hi there, how fast did the battery life drain for M1 Macbook Air without charging when connected to external monitor? Is there any difference using the USB C Hub vs "USB-C to Display Port cable"?
(I tried the USB C Hub with my M1 Mac Air and it drains really quickly compared to my windows laptop.. )
Well do keep in mind that anything you plug into the MBA will want some of that resource, even a hub.
I personally go direct when I can and if I have a hub plugged in I just keep it separate from the display.
So the MBA is obviously going to be pushing that display and so that takes resource, add a hub to that and then you’re putting a bit more on that battery because the board in that hub is transferring that signal.
Now my use case may be different than yours. I’m editing video and photos most of the day and transferring large files along with having about 4 different browsers with 30+ tabs open on each browser, so I’m definitely placing more demands on the system.

Have you experienced the issue where volume controls on an external monitor (I have a Dell Ultrawide U3412WE) are disabled by Apple (I’m trying to connect a mbp 13” m1, my kids chrome book and pc laptop work seamlessly)? I see some chatter online but the apps people are suggesting have retired or are rather homebrew in presentation. I’ve read it’s a driver issue but Apple says it a Dell issue and Dell, well, you probably know the rest of this song. Any insight you have would be so appreciated.
Yeah, it’s an Apple issue. It has been. I’ve got internal speakers as well, but just never use them because they sound awful.
There are some home brewed apps as you’ve mentioned. Did you happen to look at EqMac?
I used to use Soundflower in my other machines.
The decent workarounds are really hardware based, honestly.
The community has submitted reports to Apple on this issue and although some have gotten it to work on their Intel Mac, it has been an issue off and on for quite some time, regardless of what cable you’re connecting with unless you use the headphone out to an input on the monitor, but again, that’s still not a great solution either.
I wish I had a better answer that offers an easy solution.

As long as the monitor has 60Hz, then you should be just fine as long as the cable your using is fast enough. There are some linked below.
The MBA can also push at a higher refresh rate on a 1080p monitor. I actually did a test and video on that.
USB-C to DisplayPort would be my next in line recommendation if you don’t have a USB-C compatible monitor.
Double check that the monitor plays well with a Mac. There are some linked below, but when you settle on one just double check because every monitor has its hang ups.

I have the Macbook Air M1 and have been looking into the 49" UltraWide Monitors and it seems that it can push the resolution, and it's only able to have 1 additional monitor... so I think the 49" monitors are kind of considered 2 monitors. I'll be using the monitor mainly for business and productivity, very light editing video/images. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe I don't need the 49" and could get away with using a 34"... On the 34" View Sonic... with a MacBook Air M1... when you're doing split screen, and you click to open an app on one side full screen, does it open full screen within that side of the monitor or does it overtake the entire full screen? Thanks! Yeah that 49 inch is a lot of real estate and it should push it just fine.
As far as the split screen, no, the app or program doesn’t typically take up the whole screen and usually opens up as a partial screen. So let’s say I’m working with a doc on the right and Photoshop on the left. I would manually size those to how I’d want them and then let’s say I minimize that window...and then bring it back up. It’ll be in that same spot that I placed it.
The ultrawides do have split screen capabilities, but with MacOS I’ve had to rely on the built in (software) functionality vs what the screen is capable of...not sure if that answers the question.
But simply, I do work in multiple apps and have those placed where I want them and toggle between them as I need to.

I've watched a bunch of YT vids about the 49" monitors with the Macbook Air M1's and people are having issues with getting the resolution that the monitor can push.. but looking at the ViewSonic 34" that you have, might be a good enough option for me to multitask :)
I would say that the 34 is plenty for most. Honestly, I’ve never once said, “I wish had more screen real estate.”

I personally like the USB-C version because it then turns into a hub with the rest of the connections in the back. The next one I’d recommend is DisplayPort, so the USB-C to DisplayPort, and then HDMI. You’d only get that hub functionality with the USB-C connection though.

Did you double check the OSD control on the monitor itself to see if the volume is down? Also, in system preferences and audio settings, is your monitor showing up?

Hi Kevin, a couple of months ago I swapped out my 2017 5k imac in preference for the 13 inch MBP M1 for better speed of photo and video editing. I had a 5k LG 27inch monitor (sold by Apple) connected through the thunderbolt connection. Working with it though didnt seem to be any quicker than the Imac. A couple of Sunday's ago I uncoupled the MBP from my desk and worked with it on my lap and wow it was super fast. I did lots of tests and the thing that kept coming up as the result was that the 5k monitor seemed to strangling / throttling back the capability of the MBP. I coupled it to an LG 4k 24 inch monitor and it worked a lot quicker. Luckily Apple took the 5k monitor back and gave a full refund. Have you had any experience of a monitor slowing an M1 MBP down and if so is there a work around? Both the 24 and 27 inch monitors were connected via TB3 - best wishes Nick
Hey Nick. That is definitely the first I’ve heard about it here.
What I will say is that I’ve definitely talked to quite a few folks that have been cruising along, while a small handful have had the typical “monitor” issues.
However I did see some threads a while back about this monitor slowing down MBPs ...this was even before the M1.
I’d have to dig deeper on this specific issue as some were complaining about the particular chip (Intel) being underpowered, while others reset the VRAM.
But what I will say is that my MBA runs the same whether on a monitor or not. This seems isolated to this particular monitor.
I suppose you wouldn’t have another monitor lying around to test?
Hi Kevin, i have the 24 inch LG 4k (the 27inch 5k's smaller brother) and the 13 inch M1 MPB works much better on that. I will say though that in all my trials and testing of the 27 inch and the 24 inch and just the laptop, it did seem to be quickest when nothing else was plugged in. Ive looked on forums and others seem to be having slowing down issues with some monitors. The 24 inch monitor is very sharp so perhaps i'll stick with this for now. I was on the phone for a good couple of hours with the tech team from apple and eventually they agreed that it was the 5k 27 inch LG that was the culprit. I was gutted as this monitor is amazing.
I feel you on feeling gutted about that monitor my friend. It’s really hard to find a display that is comparable to the iMac.

As I mentioned in another video, the Thunderbolt controller/retimer in the M1and what seems to be helping some workflows is a powered hub, but no guarantee that this would help with this particular display.
Not to mention as great as these machines are, needing a hub shouldn’t be the solution. I’m hoping the engineers are taking notes here because I’ve come across a few forums where users are at least reporting these issues and I can’t imagine this is only (if it all) software related, but rather the power output on these chips.

Great update! Yeah, not a fan of HDMI at all. I may eventually just "steal" my cinema display back from the wife and give her one of my DEll 27 inch 4k displays! Hopefully, the thunderbolt 2 to TB3 adapter will work! WIll be testing that out on her Air when it arrives.

Whats your opinion on the Viewsonic VP2785-4k with USB type c or the Viewsonic VP3268-4K?? As monitors alone which would you say is the best for photo and video editing or what would you suggest would be good now?
Honestly, between the two, I've personally looked at the VP2785 and think it's a compelling option for photo/video. I believe it's a bit "newer" as well as far as the release goes if I'm not mistaken. I know it's a bit smaller as far as real estate, but I believe this wouldn't be missed based on the what you're getting out of the monitor. Not just USB-C, but the quality of the image.
For strictly photo, I also like the BenQ line of monitors and I'm also eyeing a couple of options there as well.
@@KevinRossRN Tbh I really like the thiner bezel around the 68 line (no branding or buttons) but have been looking at the VP2785 but wasn’t sure as its actually 2017 model LCD display. There is also a VP2768 2018 model which is LED and is actually cheaper but it doesn’t have a the USB c like the VP3268 doesn’t either. It’s going to be my first monitor so want to make sure its a good one that will last. And will work well with the new M1 Mac Mini.
I did have a look at the BenQ but didn’t have a clue where to start lol. Any to recommend ?

It's a little on the higher side of price, but I almost (literally almost) pulled the trigger on it. I'm still weighing this one as an option. You'll find a few other BenQ options as well when it comes to color accuracy, and at a lower price.

So I didn’t try an old CRT monitor, but I did try a monitor that still has a VGA connection.

There will be a very small amount of heat generated when pushing any external monitor, however it’s honestly not that significant where it should impact the performance. What is your primary use?

For coding, even though that can be intensive, you should be just fine with an external display without issue on the MBA.

Hey Kevin, great videos!.. I just bought a 32" inch 2k viewsonic monitor and paired it with a MacBook pro m1, the UI and videos are great.. but the text is blurry and crooked. I checked the internet and it was full of complaints. Wonder if you faced the same or if you have any solution for this.
Are there particular complaints on that specific monitor? I haven’t had issues with my viewsonic and I definitely use it all the time for typing up notes. Have you tried to into any of the onboard monitor settings yet?

I have been having the exact same issue and I saw on the Apple forum that a bunch of people are are complaining about blurry text on an external monitor, no matter how high res their monitor or or what their setting might be on. I have a Samsung G35T Gaming Monitor with 144Hz Refresh Rate - 27 Inch and bought the new MacBook Pro 14” with the M1 Chip, and I’ve tried multiple HDMI and DisplayPort cables, tried testing all the different display settings and my text is so pixelated / blurry. It a massive issue because I’m a UI Designer, I need to design pixel perfect. Please lemme know there is any update or fix for this?
My friend, I'm looking for the best keyboard and mouse option for the mac mini m1..the use I make mainly of logic pro X and a bit of video editing..Which keyboard and mouse do you think is the best choice for me? I've heard that the mac mini m1 has some problems with the bluetooth connection and for this reason I was thinking of getting the magic keyboard and the magic mouse that are from apple..Do you think that the mx keys and the mx master 3 are a better choice? In the long run they are just as reliable like the apple keyboard and the magic mouse? Do they have connectivity issues or are they compatible like the apple?
So with the latest BT updates it seems that much of this is “fixed”
I really love the key travel on the MX line, but either keyboard should work well.
The one advantage of the MX line up is that they do come with Bluetooth receivers that plug in via the USB. Now, this doesn’t mean you need to keep them connected all the time, but I can report myself and others have circled back around to tell me that it did work when initially starting up the Mac.
For those that just purchased the Mac and don’t have that Big Sur 11.2 update I know it can be worrisome on that initial boot up. I actually have a wired keyboard laying around that I had to use on that first boot when I got the machine in November, but I’ve tried to replicate the problem and was able to use the BT receiver on the MX keys...and it did work.
For me I like the ergonomics better on the MX line because the magic keyboard does feel flat, although I do love typing on Apple keyboards (usually).
The mouse is definitely not a fav of mine and I don’t know what Apple was thinking when it comes to that flat design, but I get the aesthetics part.
Do you have a cheap wired keyboard lying around just in case?
As far as the day to day though, I never lose connection with the MX keys and Master 3. It was just on that initial boot.
I saw that the mix keys, along with the usb stick, also contains a usb-c cable whenever I hope the first time I turn on the Mac mini to recognize it even with a cable connection..As for the mx master 3 I have seen great reviews from many people..I hope I did not make the wrong choice that I bought the Mx keys and the mx master 3 instead of the magic keyboard and the Magic Mouse and not to regret it..😩😩😩
Oh I forgot it does come with a cable. I never used it because I have so many type c cables already. The BT receiver is in there though and that should help.

I went to VIEW tab and it offered LG screen and now ihave it aplit in two screens and can drag stuff to the LG screen, Mouse really has to move acros desk and I want text bigger on the 50". Clear enough but it is 43" away to center and 57" to top right which is also almost 6' off floor. Okay fiddling. Well Command (Apple) + made the text bigger, one issue solved. The otherAcer monitor has the Top Controls bar still. Also cannot get thehLG to be on net alone or hear the speakers???? vs the ones on speaker jack from mini.
Have you tried a hub that supports 4K 60Hz? Because the one you are using is limited to 4K 30Hz.

Yes. As long as your refresh rate is 60Hz on the monitor.
The MBA can actually push a higher refresh rate if the monitor is capable. I’ve tested it on a gaming monitor.

Great content 👍 would you consider a matt screen monitor? I'm just starting out looking for a decent all round monitor and it's quite a lot of work sifting through the many veriations and brands. I was told VA monitors are yesterday's tech and to avoid them, so companies still push them however..
I personally don’t like a matte screen because I’m really looking for those colors to “pop” when I’m editing, but also be close to what you’d actually see.
MVA panels are pretty common, especially with the curved displays because they’re most cost effective to manufacture.

I have a creator friend, Alex Gear and Tech who currently has that monitor. He may be able to weigh in on what he thinks of it. He’s also responsive in his comments section.
What if my Mac screen is so cracked it is not working so I can't navigate all the clicks necessary to set this up?
If you have an external keyboard or mouse it’ll help with this process.
You can either shut down the Mac first or connect the external display to the Mac (and keyboard and mouse), but either way you’ll want to reboot the Mac with the external display connected.
Once you turn the Mac back on just close the lid and the external display becomes your primary display. You can also go into display settings to ensure that you want this display to be the main, and you can even toggle on to mirror displays.
Then, if you open the lid of the Mac it should still display the screen just fine on the external.

Well with HDMI at least you’d have those TB3 ports open for other tasks. I just use the TB3 to the monitor because it turns into a hub.

But reading that reviews a see a lot of problems with 30/60hertz. What is your opinion about this problem? Could this be the cable do you think it's the monitor? Because i like it so much. But if they don't match not a good idea to buy it...

Well now that is concerning. I have a BenQ monitor, the GW2480...it's not 4K, but does have 60Hz capability.
So I just tested it with my M1 MBA, and I can confirm 60Hz for both USB-C to DisplayPort and HDMI running through the HooToo hub that I have. My kid uses it as a gaming monitor, so that's why I didn't test it before, but if I could upload a screen shot here I would.
Now, I certainly can't speak specifically to the monitor you're interested in, but I do see where others are struggling. Do you have your eye on any others?

Hello I've had some problems with this full set up! I was successfully able to connect my MacBook to the desktop but the Bluetooth mouse & keyboard (Lenovo brand) that is connected to the desktop weren't able to function when I've closed the laptop. Does the bluetooth set have to be connected to the MacBook or the desktop when I want to use it with the MacBook closed?
So when the MacBook is in clamshell mode (lid closed), as long as it’s connected to the external display and the Bluetooth peripherals were previously connected it should still function. I assume the keyboard and mouse work with the lid open and connected to the display?

The mouse & keyboard works before it’s connected to the MacBook, but once it’s connected, they both don’t work ( lid opened or closed). They only work when I connect them to the MacBook not the desktop but in that case I don’t have enough usb-c spots🥺 Could it be that the desktop I’m using is connected to a hard drive not just a desktop?
So when you say desktop, I assume you’re referring to a monitor, correct?

Ohhhh, that’s likely why. Even though it’s a monitor it still has the computer built in, which is likely the reason why since it’s not just a standalone monitor, which does create a whole other set of workarounds because they’re basically “competing” with each other.
Are you having issues with the blurred text that's been an issue since Mojave on using non-4k monitors with Macs?
I haven’t personally, but this is also monitor dependent. I know a small handful here that had an issue with their monitor, which I don’t have a running list of each monitor that this an issue with. Is there a particular monitor you’re referring to?
@@KevinRossRN It isn't an issue with the monitors itself. It's how MacOS rends texts plus treats non-retina ie non-4k displays . Starting Mojave, they basically removed antialiasing for text which has caused issues with text looking blurry combined with no HiDPI rendering.
No, I hear what you’re saying and I definitely should have included that in my reply as I’ve had other convos here in the comments on MacOS specifically.
As far as monitors are concerned it seems that there are specific monitors are “better” at dealing with this issue over others.
I’ve tested several of the same brands, BenQ being one of them, where they would all provide a pretty stellar viewing experience on MacOS.
Whereas there are a couple of Dell monitors, which I think are also great, but that have that issue where text is pixelated/blurry, but the RGB/Color rendering can be stunning. And Dell flat out says that they are not testing these on Macs at all. Whether that’s true or not from the R&D perspective, but there have been customer service responses on some of their ultrawides that state these are only tested on Windows 🤷♂️
But again, you are correct and this is something that we all have to be mindful of is that some of these monitors are able to deliver the same quality and functionality on either hardware, because there’s also others that have stated a superior experience on their PCs while a very subpar one on their Mac with the same monitor.
I’m hoping with this next iteration of MacOS that we’ll start to get some of this functionality back because with the GPU, and the communication protocol for displays all occurring within an Apple SoC, they could actually make this better.
This is also just one of those things where Apple is forcing app development to utilize metal as well as pressuring other hardware manufacturers to develop a line specific for Mac hardware.
Display companies are already doing this, but unfortunately it’s also not clear to the consumer.
Hi Kevin. Again a very informative video! I will get my m1 mac mini end of next week. I will have a new samsung 4K ips monitor wich has hdr and 60 hertz.
My question is: is it better to connect the monitor with a 2.0 hdmi to the mini or should i use a hdmi to display Port cable? My usb-c ports at the mini will be connected to external ssds. Greetz Bjoern

I alsow ordered a 2TB samsung T7 to do video editing. But at first I need to transfer some datas from my old windows pc to the mini with the T7. What is the best formation type for the SSD to be able to communicate with both, windows and Mac OS, with no limitation in file size?
After I have done this copying/transfer, is it better to make a new formation on the SSD in the apple format? Will the SSD work better in apple format or does the formation of a SSD not affect the write/read speed?

So if you don’t have USB-C monitor, then I’d prioritize USB-C (connected to the TB port) and then DisplayPort to the monitor if you can. The HDMI to DP (for me) isn’t working correctly. I’m still testing it. But if you need that TB3 port to be open then just go with the HDMI to HDMI.
As far as the file format you can go exFAT between the two, and then once you’re exclusive MacOS then I’d switch to APFS as it should give you faster read/write...theoretically.

FYI, I was trying to get my Macbook Pro May 2020 to display at native resolution on my external monitor Acer XR382CQK (3840x1600 @ 75 Hz.) via USB C-USB C cable. It was not initially working and was staying consistent at native resolution but locked at 30 Hz. The work around that the manual of my monitor indicated that in order to get full monitor resolution of the DP ALT port, you need to turn off USB 3.0 capabilities of the integrated USB 3.0 hub of the monitor so it can only work at 2.0 speeds. What this does, I assume, is that allocates that data bandwidth to the video instead of the data. When doing so, I had to switch the option to off and then press down on the joystick so it could enable it. Once that happened, I went back to my display settings and repeated the stems that Kevin here highlights so you can see the refresh rate and at that point it was no longer grayed out.

It’s tough because every monitor and workflow requires minor tweaks...at least from my testing.

I have Mac mini m1 and the MacBook Air m1...external monitor connected to the Mac mini, how can I ALSO connect my MacBook Air to the Mac mini to use as a 2nd monitor. I want to color grade (or at least check color) on my Air. Thanks man!
So, not necessarily a “quick and easy” solution. But this article can illuminate some of the limitations.
It used to be that we could use target display mode with old iMacs, but these chipsets are requiring a bit more of a workaround that includes a combo of hardware and software.

Not sure why my BenQ is so far off from my MacBook as far as color but at least now I have something as a reference instead of my phone. Maybe you know and can do a video? I know color profiles is a big confusing topic
Yeah, monitors drive me bonkers. I just focus on the scopes and call it a day. But glad you got it to work. That side car and air display/screen share gets a little buggy at times. Sometimes it’ll connect right away while other times it’s not an option. 🤷♂️
@@KevinRossRN gotcha.. yea I need to learn How to read color scopes better.. the exposure is cool but color sucks! My screen share seems to be on point so far.
Awesome that the screen share is working. Glad that part was easy.
Heck I’m still working on figuring out scopes. Just practice, but it’s also about the look you want as well. As long as I can get the skin tones dialed in, then I feel comfortable experimenting with the rest of the colors as long as they’re not wildly shifted.
