Paper Mario modder here. The 10 Luigi NPCs in the Smash Attack room are actually used to position the Peach sprites - they move around randomly as soon as the minigame begins. It's unlikely that the minigame was originally going to include Luigi; many other rooms use NPCs found in the current area (but not in the same map so they don't get confused with e.g. the Toad who you talk to to start the minigame). Similarly, the snowmen and letter-in-a-tree in Ch 7 are actually invisible penguin NPCs. Peach herself doesn't even have an NPC besides the one used in the parade at the end of the game (which was implemented at the end of development according to the game data) - she instead is a clone of the player in most scenes.
I can promise everyone watching that if you love Paper Mario, you'll love Bug Fables. They spent years working on it, and I'd say that in some ways, they outdid even Thousand Year Door. The most mind blowing thing about Paper Mario to be is the fact that you can go inside the backdoor of the Trouble Center in Thousand Year Door if you use Flurry to remove the hidden panel. I played so much of that game for years and never knew about it until I accidentally used her ability and saw the ripple.
You forgot that Goomba King in Paper Mario returns in Super Mario 64 DS renamed as Goomboss as the boss that needs to be beaten in order to rescue Mario
actually, you can see the theater elements in TTYD (especially the radio and lights) as sometimes when a Shy Guy jumps on stage, the camera will turn 90 degrees behind mario to show it running. It can be seen during this time.
Did you know? The reason Paper Mario Sticker Star only had vanilla characters was because Miyamoto told the team to only use Super Mario Bros series characters. He also told them to remove as much story as possible because "you really only need Peach being kidnapped by Bowser" and he told them to remove partners because it "felt too much like TTYD." We likely will never see a real return to Paper Mario 1 and 2's greatness but at least we have great people making stuff like Bug Fables to keep the spirit alive.
Highly recommend Bug Fables, it's incredible, extremely witty, cute, and well done dialogue and undeniably well done Paper Mario style combat. If you love Paper Mario you'll love bug fables
"Navi" is likely not a reference to the character from OoT, but rather a shortening of the word "navigator," since Kersti helps Mario *navigate* the game world.
He pronounced it like Threw, as in "he threw the ball". Or you know, the past tense of throw. Is there any words where eau makes the ow sound? As it makes more since for it to be ew like in beautiful.
There are two other translation errors in Thousand Year Door. In an email you get after completing the trouble where you need to rescue a Toad on the 18th floor of the Pit of 100 Trials, the Toad says that he's gone back to Toad Town to take care of Bubu. Bubu is the Japanese name for the Lil' Oinks, the pig-like creatures you can mess with in the original Paper Mario. Because it was handled by a different team and the Lil Oinks are such a minor part of the original title, that reference most likely flew under the team's radar. The other error might not necessarily be an error, but is worth pointing out. The Piranha Plant enemy you fight deep in the Pit of 100 Trials is in fact called Kira Packun in Japan, Packun being the Japanese word for the various types of Piranha Plants, and Kira in this being how a Japanese person would say "Killer" in English. Meaning that their actual English name would be Killer Piranha. This is why Goombella's tattle for the enemy is a little strange; she says "It may look like a normal Piranha Plant, but don't be fooled!" implying that it's not a normal Piranha Plant despite using the basic name. The French and German translations, however, properly refers to them as Killer Piranha in-game.
Actually have been playing Bug Fables for a couple days now. It's really pretty good! Definitely not as pretty as a Mario game, and the story and characters aren't as interesting as the old PM games, but definitely worth $20 for fans of the original games. I'm hoping it sells like wildfire so NINTENDO WILL SEE ITS SUCCESS AND GIVE US A PROPER PAPER MARIO GAME ALREADY.
How are the characters not as interesting? Most partners in Paper Mario are just "hmm yes you helped me I will be with you now" and that was pretty much it
Cameron Kelson I’m more shocked that you found PM’s characters more interesting, despite their two-minute-long character arcs ending as soon as they join your party.
you can tell who watched an LP highlights and who played the game. DID YOU KNOW that every partner has its own dialogue during every chapter from the point you acquire them onward and act as marios mouth piece.
That’s true but all partners aren’t used at once and aren’t everyone’s favorite. I like Goombella, Yoshi, Vivian, and Bobbery so once I get them I’ll use them the most and even then you have to cycle through them to get said dialogue whereas in Bug Fables everyone gets equal screen time cause there’s only three.
Did you know? Sticker Star came about because, according to the creators, less than 1% of Japanese players in a Club Nintendo survey thought Super Paper Mario’s story was interesting.
it was probably a drag since the game is so boring to play. the final boss, for instance, is anticlimatic, compared to the other 2 which were pretty hype. maybe the story in another game would have been good.
That's the problem though, is that it was rigged. They asked about the story of the game people didn't like, instead of the Thousand Year Door. They just wanted to eliminate story and wanted a "reason" for it. They KNOW people loved the first two.
"Sticker star originally had additional partners other than Kersti. These additional parters were apparently removed because they took the focus away from the sticker based gameplay" You know, if I had known about that, I would have never had my hopes up for color splash and origami. They have no idea what we want in a paper mario game.
Hey I heard Color Splash was at least better than Sticker Star in terms of just the overall experience and humor, Origami from bits I've seen looks like it could be better than Splash Now.. I doubt we will ever go back to TTYD fully, we just are past that era by now, people need to accept that and understand new things will be done in the series
Does anyone else wish that Paper Mario would get it’s old world back like in TTYD? I’m sick of the entire game looking like some kids art project. I missed when the world was its own and the characters happened to have paper attributes instead of giant white outlines.
100%. I dont get how Nintendo doesnt see that we(fans of the series/originals)'re not like 'HOLY FUCK, THIS GAME IS MADE OF PAPER'. Nobody anywhere cares about the fact it's made of paper. Woolly World and Crafted World seem to point to that Nintendo thought that it was the art gimmick that people loved about PM64/TTYD. It's just a really charming visual style; a more secondary, complementary element of the world while the game itself is stellar, more or less with or without it. Entirely seperate to the structure of the world. The original two games were just great games that occasionally interjected to give you a paper-based powerup - just a fun, almost profound reminder that your characters, your protagonists were made simply of paper. But when that fun reminder is shoved down your throat literally every step of the way... I mean, i havent played sticker star or colour splash but the charm of the paper aesthetic is that you lose yourself in a simply, truly great game and then occasionally have a chest or a cutscene remind you that these are paper cutouts you're getting invested in. I think that's why SPM is borderline too - it's not that the paper aesthetic is being shoved down your throat in the battle mechanics yet, but it is that every 30 seconds you have to flip dimension and be reminded that this world is paper and you have significantly less time to get lost in a great game beyond that, ultimately to be made more light and uplifting by the occasional reminder that our heroes are paper. The great game... the great story and dialogue and characters needs to come first. The paper is there to remind you that like, when you watch Chicken Run or whatever, wow, you're getting emotionally invested in playdough, what an accomplishment that is to carry a truly great story into an art style ive had at my fingertips since i was an infant. I mean i havent seen Chicken Run in awhile, but PM64 and TTYD... That is it. A great game, with great story, characters, simple perfect battle mechanics, built in a impressively immersive world of paper. Not a great paper game. With other stuff later. Like stickers. Or paint. Or origami. (...i apologise for my pessimism. I'm hopeful for the new one. But it's worrying that they still dont seem to get that paper just isnt the core of why it works.) shaderadio.com
Fun fact: *_when paper mario the origami king's trailer was shown it was realised 64 days before the game comes out which is a reference to the n64 and to the first paper mario game too_*
6:28 What baffles me more is, why does the sections seem to be fully in 3d, why are there blocks which are incredibly low. Why does the enviroment not have typical Paper Mario graphics and what are those cats??
Maybe the localization team were using Super to create their own Paper Mario-like with those cats, but they forgot to remove those scenes and custom assets, maybe Nintendo found out and forced them to put their lil project to a halt because they were using their game to make another one
Damn it’s been so long since PMTYD came out, this makes me feel old, and I do wish paper Mario becomes good again. Also don’t blame miyamoto, it was just one of his directors who took his words too seriously.
Kersti sells for 15 coins... I wonder if that was intentionally put in the game or if its just a number the game made up by doing something you can't normally do in game. Like in the game files it's like "so Kersti's sticker data is similar to (insert random sticker)'s data, so if (random sticker) sells for 15 coins than Kersti sells for 15 coins as well"
You know Stryder’s drama was some serious shit when DYKGaming made a Paper Mario video without him. In all seriousness, though, I’m with him all the way. Good video, guys. :)
Usually I detest sponsors, but Bug Fables actually lives up to it's reputation. It's an amazing game that definitely lives up to the combat, creative writing, story progression, and characters of Paper Mario!
When luigi drops mario and huey off Huey says "If anyone gives you trouble, give them that creepy look you showed us earlier" which is a reference to the meme, luigi's death stare
I thought the Luigi in the minigame room was used to track the blocks, not that it meant Luigi was going to be in the minigame. Paper Mario 64 does other, similar things to this with characters being under the map
Not really; if you're familiar enough with British English, it's easy to tell that "artistic" and "autistic" are pronounced considerably differently across dialects, with "artistic" having a reedier "a" sound and "autistic" having an "a" sound closer to an "o" sound than in "artistic." The pronunciation of "artistic" does sound _slightly_ similar to the pronunciation of "autistic" in many American dialects, but only because British English dialects don't really use a hard "r" sound in "ar" syllables, and it's still noticeably different enough to be differentiable.

@@LycanLink i meant in English, but I guess he could have a non English name. YellowpowR had a more definitive answer.
I'm actually replaying all of the Paper Mario games in preparation for Origami King right now so I'm so happy to see this video pop up in my feed!
Stryder alone covered PM in excessive detail. It's amazing. Same goes for that one guy who found parallel universes in Mario 64.
Bug Fable is amazing guys!!
Most partners in Paper Mario are just "hmm yes you helped me I will be with you now" and that was pretty much it
Cameron Kelson
I’m more shocked that you found PM’s characters more interesting, despite their two-minute-long character arcs ending as soon as they join your party.
you can tell who watched an LP highlights and who played the game.
Lizardguy calm down dude.
it was probably a drag since the game is so boring to play. the final boss, for instance, is anticlimatic, compared to the other 2 which were pretty hype. maybe the story in another game would have been good.
honestly i thought that super paper mario was one of the best wii games out there. I had so much fun with the story and gameplay and everything
That's the problem though, is that it was rigged. They asked about the story of the game people didn't like, instead of the Thousand Year Door. They just wanted to eliminate story and wanted a "reason" for it. They KNOW people loved the first two.
Lizardguy great story ur tripping
"Sticker star originally had additional partners other than Kersti. These additional parters were apparently removed because they took the focus away from the sticker based gameplay"
You know, if I had known about that, I would have never had my hopes up for color splash and origami. They have no idea what we want in a paper mario game.
it looked like Paper Mario 3 🥺🥺
Go cry!!
@@atre5763 You seem to be crying every comment I check
Hey I heard Color Splash was at least better than Sticker Star in terms of just the overall experience and humor, Origami from bits I've seen looks like it could be better than Splash
Now.. I doubt we will ever go back to TTYD fully, we just are past that era by now, people need to accept that and understand new things will be done in the series
Glad that you guys promoted big fables, it definitely needs to be seen more by people!
But it's worrying that they still dont seem to get that paper just isnt the core of why it works.)

Mario: _Clips OoB and passes a pile of logs._
Everyone: "YOU SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO THAT!"
I realized that the clock mentioned at 5:16 was showing the time the Wii's system clock was set to even when I first played the game when I was 10 :)
I am so HAPPY for the Bug Fables promo
Fun fact: *_when paper mario the origami king's trailer was shown it was realised 64 days before the game comes out which is a reference to the n64 and to the first paper mario game too_*
Reported. This is getting old
6:28 What baffles me more is, why does the sections seem to be fully in 3d, why are there blocks which are incredibly low.
Did he just pronounce Thoreau with a U sound? It's "foRO"! You use him to *throw* stuff!
Edit: now he pronounced fungi with an "ii" sound??
YESS FINALLY SECRETS ABOUT PAPER MARIO, MY FAVOURITE GAME!!!
I've never seen the scrapped Chain Chomp partner in motion before.
Did you know? Intelligent Systems used to make good Paper Mario games.
I know I’m late, but the higher ups at Nintendo are the ones stifling it, not the director
Other note: Bug Fables is also on GOG (for those that want GOG instead of just Steam): www.gog.com/game/bug_fables_the_everlasting_sapling
My favorite channel to watch after doing all the chores and sipping some tea
Literally playing bug fables as I was watching this video
One of my absolute favourite game series. I own every English paper Mario game available.
As someone who played Bug Fables from release I highly recommend it, amazing game
Neat facts! Love hearing about the secrets of Paper Mario! Thanks for uploading!
Duuude I’m so stoked that Bug Fables are the sponsor for this video. It’s so good.
0:14 did you know? paper Mario’s AUTISTIC direction-
Please for the love of cake someone tell them to make another thousand year door!
Kersti sells for 15 coins...
I wonder if that was intentionally put in the game or if its just a number the game made up by doing something you can't normally do in game.
Like in the game files it's like "so Kersti's sticker data is similar to (insert random sticker)'s data, so if (random sticker) sells for 15 coins than Kersti sells for 15 coins as well"
"If you're watching this video you're no doubt a fan of the Paper Mario series"
Bold of you to assume I've actually played a Paper Mario game
Life begins at PM64
Count Bleck is pretty much just the Count of Monte Cristo
When I was little, I noticed the Wii Shop Channel Fracktail eye Easter egg.
You know Stryder’s drama was some serious shit when DYKGaming made a Paper Mario video without him.
In all seriousness, though, I’m with him all the way. Good video, guys. :)
Wait, what?
Bug Fables is awesome! Its the Paper Mario Rpg we've been waiting for
Paper Mario and Yoshi story are about the only N64 games that still hold up pretty well in the visual department
As soon as he said “secrets” I knew Stryder was gonna be involved
What happened to Stryder?
Usually I detest sponsors, but Bug Fables actually lives up to it's reputation. It's an amazing game that definitely lives up to the combat, creative writing, story progression, and characters of Paper Mario!
Could you imagine if the antagonists in PMTYD were boomers.
Roses are red
Violets are blue
1:44 "Why are they 10 Luigi's under this room"
pretty catchy
9:18 literally ruined the joke by mispronouncing fungi
Some of the "off screen details" in TTYD can be seen when a shy guy runs on stage or during phase 2 of the Hook tail fight.
When luigi drops mario and huey off Huey says
"If anyone gives you trouble, give them that creepy look you showed us earlier" which is a reference to the meme, luigi's death stare
Varia Suit should be Barrier Suit.
That's all my brain got from this video.
My life won't be the same anymore...
If you've been starving for a good paper mario, please go play Bug Fables, it's everything you'd ever want.
Does it have Mario though?
"Colour splash has been become somewhat known for it's excellent localization..."
Oof, I don't know if that's what it's known for.
Paper Mario legit looks like he saw my entire search history in the thumbnail.
Bug Fables is my absolute favorite game of 2019. Beyond fantastic.
I always forget Paper Jam existed
That's its greatest failure I think.
Paper jam was good
I thought the Luigi in the minigame room was used to track the blocks, not that it meant Luigi was going to be in the minigame. Paper Mario 64 does other, similar things to this with characters being under the map
0:14 I swear it sounds like he's saying "paper Mario's autistic direction"
Not really; if you're familiar enough with British English, it's easy to tell that "artistic" and "autistic" are pronounced considerably differently across dialects, with "artistic" having a reedier "a" sound and "autistic" having an "a" sound closer to an "o" sound than in "artistic." The pronunciation of "artistic" does sound _slightly_ similar to the pronunciation of "autistic" in many American dialects, but only because British English dialects don't really use a hard "r" sound in "ar" syllables, and it's still noticeably different enough to be differentiable.
Nah it sounds like it
I remember a certain blue guy telling me about how much he loved the series but not the direction it was heading in...
1:38 i m waiting for stryder7x comment now
He’s kinda stuck in a situation right now and hasn’t been active sence March so I don’t think he will comment
The B/V thing explains why bravo man is called barabo man in japan
