"Originally it had partners. These additional partners were apparently removed because it took away from the sticker-based gameplay."
I wanna let you know, that one hurt. That one hurt bad.
Well... makes sense.. they wanted a new gimmick and having partners that either had their own skills or their own stickers probably was too off putting for development (imagine having to manage multiple sticker books of different stickers depending on partner)
BaconNuke or imagine just not fucking up the battle system...

Bug Fables sponsoring this video was a genius use of marketing funds.
It's a genius game too tbh
Videodromed it’s pretty fun i’m 3 chapters in
Videodromed combat is great and the dialogue is good.
@Videodromed dude it's amazing, you may think the art style is meh but the game leans into it fantastically, you're missing out if you don't play it
Chapter 3 too! So far everything is perfect dialogs, boss battles, the combat system, difficulty just right (using Hard Mode medal). Definitely a must for anyone that loved the old paper mario games.
Can confirm Bug Fables is really fantastic. Normally don't comment on the sponsors but having played it in it's entirety, it really stands on its own and not just as a Paper Mario-like game.
It just released recently on xbox one which I'm having a blast since the music the dialogue and partners are awesome :D
ngl it's the first sponsor in a video I haven't immediately skipped past in years. It looks quite fun as well! I'll put it on my wishlist for now and pick it up when I've got more spare time.
The beautiful art part is wrong, but looks interesting!
Played through it myself on switch to completion. Loved it from start to finish.

I want a “Paper Luigi” game based off of Luigi’s stories from Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door. GET ON IT NINTENDO
Paper Luigi: The Marvelous Compass
Same, I always read all of the stories and bought the books
If they make a Switch Port, Luigi’s Story is literally *right there!* for more of an aftergame than just doing side content you might’ve missed
Seriously, Nintendo is dropping the ball not jumping on this opportunity. Instead of trying to change things up with every iteration, they should just go with the successful formula of the first 2 games and do paper Luigi's story!!!
I know!!! I always said this shit.. all his tales were always waaay more trippy and awesome sounding lol.. saving princess eclair etc xD
Duude, Bug Fables sponsoring DYKG!? That's so awesome! Everyone should check it out, either on Steam, where it has been released since last year, or on your console of preference, this is a great game and a great homage to the older Paper Mario games, but everyone will have fun with it, even if you're not a fan of the old Paper Mario games!
You know the money is not going to the devs but straight up onto dangen entertainment, right?.
It's so weird seeing a sponsorship for what I've heard is a really good game. Considering the types of games that usually sponsor videos, this almost makes me NOT want to play Bug Fables because of association with stuff like Raid. But I still want to play it.
Jacob Shrum how do we pirate it?
@@SilverDusk1 Wait, what happened?
@Ovadya Not OP, but from what I heard (back in like october/november ish), Dangen Entertainment had some legal and monetary issues with another game producer that came to them for the publishing of their game, which ultimately led in the producer not getting their correct compensation, if any at all. Dangen has been antagonized because of this, but I cannot confirm or deny that they had any malicious intent. That being said, I have yet to hear any qualms from the developers of the game from Reddit or other sources.
I didn’t know Sticker Star existed until Color Splash was announced.
I never knew Color Splash was a thing until few years after it was out, even then I thought it was same as Sticker Star

it's SO GOOD
check out a youtuber by the name of “Arlo” he covers pretty much anything nintendo.
So glad people are finally talking about it, easily my favorite game of 2019
Fans: Can we have Mario partners in Sticker Star?
Nintendo: Hell, no. Have some stickers!
😂😂😂😂
Paper Mario modder here. The 10 Luigi NPCs in the Smash Attack room are actually used to position the Peach sprites - they move around randomly as soon as the minigame begins. It's unlikely that the minigame was originally going to include Luigi; many other rooms use NPCs found in the current area (but not in the same map so they don't get confused with e.g. the Toad who you talk to to start the minigame). Similarly, the snowmen and letter-in-a-tree in Ch 7 are actually invisible penguin NPCs. Peach herself doesn't even have an NPC besides the one used in the parade at the end of the game (which was implemented at the end of development according to the game data) - she instead is a clone of the player in most scenes.
This is funny, when the Toad host says " Man, is this gonna ruin my career?! I can see the headline now: 'Shufflegate: Exposed!'", you can cleary tell this is a reference to the Watergate scandal, but journalists took the line out of context and took it as a GamerGate reference, despite absolutely having nothing to do with other.
“xGate” is just the term used for any type of scandal.
it clearly is a reference to gamergate, with the five guys thing.
Gamergate is a reference to Watergate any xgate is ultimately a reference to watergate
Kersti’s value is only 15 coins.. just like Sticker Star

It’s both a TMNT and Power Rangers thing
Right it is absolutely TMNT.

And the Axem Rangers from Mario RPG are based of Super Sentai, or as we know it in the west, Power Rangers!
@matt I smell a new frog
The most mind blowing thing about Paper Mario to be is the fact that you can go inside the backdoor of the Trouble Center in Thousand Year Door if you use Flurry to remove the hidden panel. I played so much of that game for years and never knew about it until I accidentally used her ability and saw the ripple.
Can vouch, Bug Fables is dope af
actually, you can see the theater elements in TTYD (especially the radio and lights) as sometimes when a Shy Guy jumps on stage, the camera will turn 90 degrees behind mario to show it running. It can be seen during this time.
was this video made so you could advertise to us what seems to be an actually good paper mario game?
Very likely, they think they're slick though lol
well played
Sponsored by an actual good Paper Mario-like game, so...it's certainly relevant.
This is the kind of advertising I can get behind.
You say that like there aren't any good Paper Mario games
Bug fables lived up to and exceeded all of my expectations of a spiritual successor to og Paper Mario. The battle mechanics are even more fine-tuned them TTYD and Vi, Kabuu and Leif are super likable and entertaining characters.
If you're craving a very polished RPG experience then I highly recommend Bug Fables.
But having bugs turns me off from the idea XD i wanna like it but... just..bugs
BaconNuke Yeah I was skeptical about that too. But dude when you play it the bug thing works so well. Bug Fabled is 100% worth it.
BaconNuke bro I think I’ve seen you comment this like five times lmao, just try it or don’t
"Boomer Gang" would have aged AMAZINGLY and would have provided prime meme material
i guess grodus would be called boomer kuwanger under that
OK, Boomer Ganger
Did you know? The reason Paper Mario Sticker Star only had vanilla characters was because Miyamoto told the team to only use Super Mario Bros series characters. He also told them to remove as much story as possible because "you really only need Peach being kidnapped by Bowser" and he told them to remove partners because it "felt too much like TTYD." We likely will never see a real return to Paper Mario 1 and 2's greatness but at least we have great people making stuff like Bug Fables to keep the spirit alive.
Imagine having making a gang and then calling it "boomer gang"
I can imagine a next gen Pokemon game having a gang call themselves, Team Boomer.
Thats back when the word "boomer" was normal. Then that eslut came and made it a meme.
Just like that one anime...
"Boomers! What disgusting monsters they are!"
*cries in Fallout New Vegas*
@@gamingnubs7628
ok boomer was a meme before her. She just made it known to the normies.
I bought Bug Fables two days ago, and I have never before been so infatuated with a game so early in playing it.
If you enter the room where you fight grodus with Vivian, she'll say that it looks familiar, implying that she is over a thousand years old.
Considering that she's one of the shadow sirens, and the other two (at least) seemed to know the shadow queen and vice versa supports this.
4:36 I have a funny story about my old mans accent.
He’s Japanese and as stated in the video the letter V doesn’t really exist and so they don’t know how to use it well. Same with the letter L.
One day my mother turns to my father and asks
Mama: ‘do you love me?’
Otousan: ‘I rub you’
Mama: ‘ I said do you LOVE me?’
Otousan: ‘I RUB you!’
Mama: ‘No not rub me, love me!’
Otousan: ‘I said I rub you!’
Mama: ‘if you wanna rub me then let’s go upstairs!!!’
* patents laugh and all 4 kids and dog exit the house in disgust *
I can promise everyone watching that if you love Paper Mario, you'll love Bug Fables. They spent years working on it, and I'd say that in some ways, they outdid even Thousand Year Door. It's got a lot of gameplay, tons of optional quests, and it isn't shy about being a good RPG. It's well worth the price. I'm not sponsored by it, I didn't help fund or develop it. But I do wanna see it get more attention, because I think it's one of the best games I've played in a long time. Idk how the next Paper Mario is gonna turn out, but Bug Fables carries on that classic style flawlessly
My profesor in uni was one of the developers and this man put his everything into the game. Wish more people gave the game a try.
The music of that game is not comparable to any of Paper Mario soundtracks tho sadly
I completely agree with this post, fantastic game, love it to bits
@@Yamahearted but the soundtrack of Bug Fables is really good (it's sound modern and nostalgic at the same time). You can easily see the inspiration from Paper Mario music and Donkey Kong Country music (David Wise). 😁

"Navi" is likely not a reference to the character from OoT, but rather a shortening of the word "navigator," since Kersti helps Mario *navigate* the game world.
It's likely both, since that's where Navi's name came from too.
I'm actually replaying all of the Paper Mario games in preparation for Origami King right now so I'm so happy to see this video pop up in my feed!

Actually have been playing Bug Fables for a couple days now. It's really pretty good! Definitely not as pretty as a Mario game, and the story and characters aren't as interesting as the old PM games, but definitely worth $20 for fans of the original games. I'm hoping it sells like wildfire so NINTENDO WILL SEE ITS SUCCESS AND GIVE US A PROPER PAPER MARIO GAME ALREADY.
How are the characters not as interesting? Most partners in Paper Mario are just "hmm yes you helped me I will be with you now" and that was pretty much it
Cameron Kelson
I’m more shocked that you found PM’s characters more interesting, despite their two-minute-long character arcs ending as soon as they join your party.
you can tell who watched an LP highlights and who played the game. DID YOU KNOW that every partner has its own dialogue during every chapter from the point you acquire them onward and act as marios mouth piece.
That’s true but all partners aren’t used at once and aren’t everyone’s favorite. I like Goombella, Yoshi, Vivian, and Bobbery so once I get them I’ll use them the most and even then you have to cycle through them to get said dialogue whereas in Bug Fables everyone gets equal screen time cause there’s only three.
Did he just pronounce Thoreau with a U sound? It's "foRO"! You use him to *throw* stuff!
Edit: now he pronounced fungi with an "ii" sound??
Glad that you guys promoted big fables, it definitely needs to be seen more by people!
When I was little, I noticed the Wii Shop Channel Fracktail eye Easter egg.
THANK YOU for shouting out Bug Fables. Gotta say its like playing a PMTTYD prequel or sequel. Pls go out n buy it if you love OG Paper Mario
I realized that the clock mentioned at 5:16 was showing the time the Wii's system clock was set to even when I first played the game when I was 10 :)
As soon as he said “secrets” I knew Stryder was gonna be involved
What happened to Stryder?
Imagine being able to sell your friend for 15 coins
Bug Fable is amazing guys!!
Kersti sells for 15 coins...
I wonder if that was intentionally put in the game or if its just a number the game made up by doing something you can't normally do in game.
Like in the game files it's like "so Kersti's sticker data is similar to (insert random sticker)'s data, so if (random sticker) sells for 15 coins than Kersti sells for 15 coins as well"
Bug Fables is actually amazing
My only fear is that, as fun as the gameplay is and similar to past PM games, that I wont be able to grab onto the characters and the story as much as Mario and his.
Being a popular mascot is an unfair advantage.
Knowing this since you played the game, are the characters and story captivating enough to pull me in?
Looks cool but ima stick with main line paper Mario. Colour splash was acc really funny, fun and unique and we are seeing a return to form this July with paper Mario the origami king, the battle system isn’t the same as TTYD but change is always nice, we get partners back and an interconnected world instead of a world map. Gunna be lit.
@@CBreezie Currently at the start of Chapter 3 of the game, and I'd say that the characters are really well written. Hell, I'd say that that's one of the things the game does best. Kinda an advantage to only having three party members. Lol.
But yeah, can't quite comment on the story as a whole yet, but the characters are great imo.
@@Cuprite1024 I think I'm going to strongly consider getting this. I've heard nothing but good things (obviously I'm fishing around for feedback before I hit the purchase button).
The low price point is an attractive thing too.
Appreciate your comment!
charles breece I’ve been playing it for only a couple of days now and I can already say I got my money’s worth. $25 is a bargain for a game this good
6:28 What baffles me more is, why does the sections seem to be fully in 3d, why are there blocks which are incredibly low. Why does the enviroment not have typical Paper Mario graphics and what are those cats??
Maybe the localization team were using Super to create their own Paper Mario-like with those cats, but they forgot to remove those scenes and custom assets, maybe Nintendo found out and forced them to put their lil project to a halt because they were using their game to make another one
2015: Mario suck it has stickers
2020: friendship ended with paper Mario friendship starts with bugfables
Did you know? Sticker Star came about because, according to the creators, less than 1% of Japanese players in a Club Nintendo survey thought Super Paper Mario’s story was interesting.
Lizardguy calm down dude.
it was probably a drag since the game is so boring to play. the final boss, for instance, is anticlimatic, compared to the other 2 which were pretty hype. maybe the story in another game would have been good.
honestly i thought that super paper mario was one of the best wii games out there. I had so much fun with the story and gameplay and everything
That's the problem though, is that it was rigged. They asked about the story of the game people didn't like, instead of the Thousand Year Door. They just wanted to eliminate story and wanted a "reason" for it. They KNOW people loved the first two.
Lizardguy great story ur tripping
Other note: Bug Fables is also on GOG (for those that want GOG instead of just Steam): www.gog.com/game/bug_fables_the_everlasting_sapling
6:55 - Thoreau is meant to be pronounced more like the word "throw," since it allows you to throw things. Something like "thor-ow," I believe.

I think the most shocking thing about Sticker Star is that the game had content removed because it took away from the sticker based gameplay. That game might have been fun if there was less sticker based gameplay.
Also, I was going to vouch for Bug Fables even before I saw that is sponsored this video. It really does tickle that OG Paper Mario itch.
As someone who played Bug Fables from release I highly recommend it, amazing game
You missed the fact that the Star Beam also removes the positive status effects from enemies

I am so HAPPY for the Bug Fables promo
I thought the Luigi in the minigame room was used to track the blocks, not that it meant Luigi was going to be in the minigame. Paper Mario 64 does other, similar things to this with characters being under the map
Did you know? Intelligent Systems used to make good Paper Mario games.

9:18 literally ruined the joke by mispronouncing fungi
What the heck, that screenshot with the chain chomp partner looked so good
Does anyone else wish that Paper Mario would get it’s old world back like in TTYD? I’m sick of the entire game looking like some kids art project. I missed when the world was its own and the characters happened to have paper attributes instead of giant white outlines.
100%. I dont get how Nintendo doesnt see that we(fans of the series/originals)'re not like 'HOLY FUCK, THIS GAME IS MADE OF PAPER'. Nobody anywhere cares about the fact it's made of paper. Woolly World and Crafted World seem to point to that Nintendo thought that it was the art gimmick that people loved about PM64/TTYD. It's just a really charming visual style; a more secondary, complementary element of the world while the game itself is stellar, more or less with or without it. Entirely seperate to the structure of the world. The original two games were just great games that occasionally interjected to give you a paper-based powerup - just a fun, almost profound reminder that your characters, your protagonists were made simply of paper. But when that fun reminder is shoved down your throat literally every step of the way... I mean, i havent played sticker star or colour splash but the charm of the paper aesthetic is that you lose yourself in a simply, truly great game and then occasionally have a chest or a cutscene remind you that these are paper cutouts you're getting invested in. I think that's why SPM is borderline too - it's not that the paper aesthetic is being shoved down your throat in the battle mechanics yet, but it is that every 30 seconds you have to flip dimension and be reminded that this world is paper and you have significantly less time to get lost in a great game beyond that, ultimately to be made more light and uplifting by the occasional reminder that our heroes are paper. The great game... the great story and dialogue and characters needs to come first. The paper is there to remind you that like, when you watch Chicken Run or whatever, wow, you're getting emotionally invested in playdough, what an accomplishment that is to carry a truly great story into an art style ive had at my fingertips since i was an infant. I mean i havent seen Chicken Run in awhile, but PM64 and TTYD... That is it. A great game, with great story, characters, simple perfect battle mechanics, built in a impressively immersive world of paper. Not a great paper game. With other stuff later. Like stickers. Or paint. Or origami. (...i apologise for my pessimism. I'm hopeful for the new one. But it's worrying that they still dont seem to get that paper just isnt the core of why it works.)
