@@DavidDriggers-yo5bxMost modders aren't worried about that. They would rather people are able to enjoy their work than to hide it in fear of a remote chance of a c&d. Yeah there's a whole Discord for the modding community with mods of all shapes and sizes. I'd recommend giving Star Haven a Google if you're interested.
I've played Dark Star Edition and the more recently released TTYD64 and can recommend both. Dark Star is extremely difficult, however, so I'd only recommend it to those willing to study each boss fight and figure out how to use their tools effectively. TTYD64 on the other hand has multiple difficulty settings. I wouldn't say its hard modes are entirely satisfying since it just enhances enemy stats by +50% and +100% respectively but it lets people enjoy a very different run of the original game without getting frustrated. It's definitely the best (finished) showcase right now of how far PM64 modding has come
The craziest part was that el-Dexter made that mod for a 2 month game jam, but only took two weeks to make it. Granted I believe the refined it after the Game Jam to make the last two levels, but I'm still impressed to this day how much he was able to do in so little time.
Master Quest is my absolute favorite of the Paper Mario rom hack. It's the original game, but with new items, badges, enemies & other content and is more challenging.
I reccommend Dark Star Edition it takes inspirarion of Master Quest but is more duable and you get these curse badges to increase enemy hp and attack and as well more star points to grind from. And it also incorporates the dark star to the game as well. And is prob more interesting than master quest jr imo.
overall aside from some unique surprise fights, Dark Star Edition really is just a more fair version of Master Quest, alongside its side story w/the Anti-gang from chs 4-8. its deff one of my favorites. esp the pit boss in DSE, who is in fact, refightable whenever you want. its the most unique boss by far. (I tested it myself by doing the DSE pit a 2nd time and was pleasantly surprised you can refight the pit boss whenever you wanted to) curse badges most deff reward you with knowing the game+bosses. take the 3 dark koopas in toad town sewers(guarding the pipes) for example, where you can use all curses for some free 100 star points(assuming merlee's used) for the first two. then make the curses at least purple to beat the 3rd dark koopa as it has spiked gloomba in the formation to gain the most star points possible from the 3 fights. it deff needs Savestates like mosta da hard mods, buts DSE's pretty fun and has nice lore(esp from the Dev's log)
Dark Star Edition is so good, it's my favorite for sure. There's something for everyone that likes PM64 in it, including those who like Master Quest's difficulty or want something even beyond (using the curse badges as you mentioned or difficulty file name cheats, etc.)
3:29 - Interesting that they called the Goomba King "Goomboss". I get that's what he was called in his appearances after Paper Mario, but it still confused me for a second. Also, that Paper Mario TTYD 64 mod reminds me of someone arguing that the original Paper Mario should have been remade over TTYD, since the foundation for Paper Mario 64 is strong and just needed the mechanics and expansions TTYD had. Maybe one of these days it'll get the remake treatment, but I think this mod is a good compromise until then.
I read a theory about why the original wasn't remade over TTYD 1) PM64 is on Switch Online already 2) Apparently it's story at times was similar to Mario RPG, which was recently remade, so they didn't want two remakes out that would share some beats around the same-ish time
@@BaconNuke I actually read the exact same thing on TV Tropes. I can't really speak to the similarities between Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario (they feel completely different to me, but whatever), though as for it already being on Nintendo Switch Online, we have Link's Awakening on NSO even though it also has a remake, so I suppose it really just depends on Nintendo.
Black Pit is incredible! If you've just started out and you're having a hard time, the game gets a LOT easier once you unlock star powers, since they're permanent, even in the roguelike pit. I love that the achievements are given a purpose because they let you unlock new star powers.
I actually completed the story in Black Pit (yes, it has an ending), took me 21 streams (~70hr), mostly grinding the Roguelike Pit for cash, and there's still more I could do in it!
Oh wow the Pixar lamp joke! I can’t unsee that now! 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆 Anyway, I think the Toadette Mod is probably my favorite among those shown in this video. Very curious to see what other Mods people create. 👀
I tried regular Master Quest. I really did. But I got hard walled at the Anti Blooper who freakin spawns Anti Guys guarding the Ultra Boots. I tried at least a hundred times I couldn’t do it lol. Maybe I’ll try again on Jr
For me, the scary thing about mods isn't about things being different, technically - but rather, it's that I'm not sure how to play them. I'm largely used to playing things on the actual systems, so I've never really understood how to set things up to play a rom. But I really hope I can figure out those technical issues someday - there are so many fascinating fan games I'm curious to explore, with even more after watching this video.
Hey, you did not mention the mod "Dark Star". It seems to be a nice alternative to Master Quest JR. I'd love to see a comparison between those two and TTYD64 hard. Not sure if I want to play them all so it would be great to have them all covered and compared.
as of now of October 2024, there are different mods for ttyd remake such as the Toadette mod (similarly covered in the video), a boss rush glitz pit rematch (only works once you finish glitz pit as it crashes the game if you put in the mod), a hard mode, and a playable Luigi as well. funnily enough it replaces luigi with mario and vice versa, so you will see mario hanging out with luigis partners.
I never knew about at least half of these. I heard & seen Pro Mode, Master Quest, & some of Dark Star. But I have seen some pictures of TTYD 64. Ever heard of the Super Mario World ROM Hack: TSRPR?
Honestly Cooking Princess took the cake for me. I'm going through Master Quest myself but Cooking Princess might be worth a look. This is what a side game should be in the franchise.
Played TTYD64 recently and design-wide it’s a ton of fun and my dream remake of PM64. I did have some technical issues along the way though. Chests in Shy Guy’s toy box started soft locking the game whenever I opened them and I had to go through the Pit of 100 Trials to fix it. Then against Bowser I had to quick beat him because the Star Rod attack would crash my emulator, which granted was probably an emulator issue. Still highly recommend the mod, but I started making start of chapter save backups after the Toy Box.
0:19 Partly because the original’s already on NSO. 2:37 @elDexter played this mod once. I’ve seen their video, but did this footage come from that? 5:30 @BertBro played this mod once, but I thought it was in Dark Star Edition.
So in Black Pit, there’s also the entire side Maze thing lol, tho maybe that was left for others to figure out when they try it. Also I’ve played Black Pit, MQjr, and TTYD64, but i really wanna try the toadette one now lol
i have pretty much all the Mods you posted in this video, the only exception being the Toadette one, nothing personal, but i like my Mods nice and beefy. i want to put the spotlight on a Mod for PM that sadly seems to be abandoned, but i feel like if enough people see it, they'll make a similar mod to finish the concept. and that Mod is called Dark Side Storyr, it's a special story where Bowser successfully destroyed Mario and conquered the Mushroom Kingdom, it also features new Partners, new Locations and Enemies. sadly, the Mod is only a single Chapter long, so my Playthrough ended way too soon, it gave me a feeling of Bowser's Inside Story in PM, but more edgy.
It's a bit unfortunate that there was no mention of Dark Star Edition and that well... literally 4 out of 6 mods were by ElDexter. Don't get me wrong he makes good stuff and black pit / ttyd64 deserve to be on here but the all bosses mod? Aight then. You even mentioned cooking princess which is a mod from the first modding jam the community held but no other jam mods were included despite there being some really good ones like Back in Bowser, Cake Chaos, Tatanga's Nebula, Legendary Starship and Koopamancer's Fury to name a few. I do appreciate there being any sort of spotlight on the topic for sure, but I suppose a little more diversity in terms of creators would've been cool :)

With Mario Builder 64 and all these, I wish Nintendo would embrace the modding scene more, just like the vast majority of other gaming companies! =/ That being said, mods and emulation are awesome! =D
i never played Paper Mario 64 before. Should i beat the original game before using any mod or it's better with some enhancement mods? if so, which one is recommended to not go far away from the original intent?
its actually be best to beat the original paper mario 64 first, so you can get a good feel for it. afterwards I'd highly recommend trying Dark Star edition, its essentially Master Quest, but far more Fair in terms of player freedom, as well as having a side-story involving the anti-gang+Dark Temple from ch. 4 through 8. you'll still need savestates and some cooking guides for Dark Star edition tho.
With so many of the mods increasing the difficulty you're probably best having at least one playthrough of the original game first. A lot of the smaller mods, like Cooking Princess or mods made for a Game Jam you could probably jump into blind, but you'd likely get more appreciation out of any Paper Mario mod once you're familiar with the original game. 'Cause as far as I know there isn't a Paper Mario mod that's just the vanilla game with QOL features. As for the second part, "Pro Mode" is probably the most like the original Paper Mario. It's harder but that's only because there's a bigger risk/reward with guarding. Enemies do double damage but defensive options are also double as effective. TTYD-64 is probably the next candidate. Story is the same, excluding the new side areas, maps are the same as the original game. However, because of the combat update and new badges, battles will feel much more like Thousand Year Door than the original game. But many people would consider that just an upgrade, so depending on your taste that may not be an issue. It's also the only mod with an easy mode, so if you're really struggling you can just adjust the difficulty.
For a first playthrough I'd recommend just playing the vanilla game. Both of those make substantial changes to the point that you're basically playing a different game. If you're set on doing one of those first though, TTYD64 would likely be the better choice imo
