This is the most helpful video I came across for fixing my LG craft ice maker. After repeated attempts with the reset button not doing anything, I followed the steps shown to access and remove the ice maker. BUT rather than buying and installing a new unit, I pulled mine out and let it defrost and then completely dry out for a few days. I then reinstalled it, powered it on, and VOILA, it works once again! I believe frost and/or ice build-up was the culprit, and not a faulty unit itself. I'm glad I tried this approach before buying a new unit.

Boy you hit the nail on the head. I went on vacation for 10 days and shut off the water and the ice maker. When I came back, and turned on the water and ice maker, no ice. I bet that is what is wrong with mine; a freeze up. Stay tuned....

Nice video. I’d like to point out that there’s a much easier way to remove the door. There are 2 screws, one on the left glide and one on the right glide. Located towards the front of the glides. Remove those screws, lift up on the door handle. The door and side supports will disengage from the glides.
This video is greatly appreciated. I am sending to one of my technicians to assist him on a repair.

Great video - thanks! I read a comment somewhere that the root problem for many folks is hard water buildup. I'll chime in and say I think that's right. After removing my icemaker, removing the stuck ice and drying it, I could feel the rough calcium deposits in the silicon cups. I poured in some vinegar and scraped the deposits off with my fingernail. Now the cups are smooth as glass. We'll see over the next few weeks if that helps prevent the problem from occurring again quickly. Without installing a water softener I'm sure the problem will reappear in a few months.

When I noticed a comment below about the icemaker thawing out then working, I decided to try this: I noticed there was no water coming out during running the test mode. I ran through the test mode multiple times, no water. Then I decided to aim a hairdryer at the icemaker during test mode. Suddenly water returned.... Probem solved. The water supply to the ice maker had frozen. Ice maker working fine now.... Many thanks for posting this video, BTW...

Was the problem in the ice maker itself, or was it where the water line comes thru the freezer wall? I'm trying to decide if I should remove my ice maker and thaw/dry it like people described, or if I need to just blow air on it. :-). Where did you aim the hairdryer?

Very helpful video. We took out our jammed ice maker, ran it under hot water and reinstalled it, replacing the spring that fell off when we were messing with it last year. Also used the tip in one of the comments to remove the screw in the guide rails instead of the door (but take a picture so you remember how it fits when you reassemble 30 minutes later! There is a trick to aligning the screw and a fin a few inches away). Anyway, we hit the test button but didnt get water. We decided to wait a few days to see if it reset itself to no avail. Went back to the comments and saw the tip to run a hair dryer on the ice maker while hitting the test button periodically. Wasn't sure where to aim the hair dryer, so moved it around the front and underneath near the test button. 5 minutes later (after hitting Test every minute) we had water spill into the bucket! Wiped the bin dry and 12 hours later we had our first 3 balls in months! Thank you for this video and the comments!!

It's a shame this fridge has this problem. Mine is less than 2 years old and I've already had the icemaker replaced once and now less than 9 months later it is not producing ice again. The craft ice maker is the reason we bought this one. What a piece of crap LG. Your video was helpful-no fault of yours that this is happening. @@MarcGyverIt I did the reset like this video showed and then turned the craft ice maker off for a day. Turned it back on and now it makes ice. The ice sometimes falls down in the black abyss and we have to get it out so the drawer will close properly. But try the reset button-not the on/off switch and see if that helps. It can't hurt, right? Funny how everyone steered me away from another brand and I bought this. What a mistake. Also, I sent an email to LG originally and they paid to replace the icemaker, so at least they did that. This last time when I emailed them I've heard nothing from them. Crickets. Crappy. Very crappy. They know this thing is a lemon. So much for having craft ice-next time just get the plastic ones from Walmart of Amazon and save a few $1,000! good luck!

These ice makers have a defrost circuit in them. The defrost circuit comes on when the ice make goes into harvest mode, thereby applying enough heat to get the three ice balls loosened up to fall out into the bin. You may even hear a knocking noise when the ice maker is trying to harvest. This is the gears skipping teeth causing the noise, an indication that the ice maker is not harvesting. Supposedly the firmware can be updated but it didn’t work on mine. Don’t waste your time calling / chatting with LG support. Just replace the unit as this video instructs

What an awesome video! One simple question.. Do I need to shut off the water supply to the fridge while doing this or will it only send water if the ice maker is calling for it? Thank you for posting this informative video! Asking because maybe I can take out the craft ice maker and let it defrost for a day (I heard that this can sometimes fix the issue) while keeping the door ice maker active.

    • @onlineappliancetech

Great question! It's usually a good idea to shut off the water supply to the fridge when working on the ice maker, just to avoid any unexpected leaks or water issues. Additionally, don't forget to unplug your fridge before you start any kind of maintenance work. This ensures your safety and protects the fridge's electrical components. Defrosting the craft ice maker for a day is a smart troubleshooting step and can often resolve issues. Best of luck, and let us know how it goes!

I wanted to clean the silicon cups because of hard water build up. I think I made a mistake because once I removed the craft ice maker, the cups were in the closed position, so I pulled it open to get at the cups. After cleaning, I could not manually push the cups back to the closed position, so I assumed that the gear mechanism would close it after I reinstalled it. Well, after reinstalling it and pressing the test button, the plastic arm broke where the motor axle connects the cup assembly. Now I'll have to buy a replacement craft ice maker. Question: How are you supposed to pry open the cup assembly so one can clean them? Or, how to close the cup assembly before reinstalling it?

    Crap Ice Maker:
My LG tech left me the original ice makeer (AEQ73449901) and replaced it with the updated new one. (AEQ73449909) Since I have hard water the calcium builds up over 5-6 months time in the rubber bowls and then the ice sticks to the rubber bowls and doesn't drop. So,,, I pull the ice maker every 5-6 months and clean the rubber bottom bowls with vinegar soaking them 4 hrs. Works well for 6-months or so but the tech said installing a R.O system could buy a years worth of time maybe instead of every 5-6 months.
To clean the rubber bowls: Dis-connect the ice maker as the bowls are in drop down direction works best. You can then sit the ice maker on counter top to pour the vinegar into them and let them soak for at least 4 hrs. This should dissolve the calcium away off the silicone.
It's probably best to just use that bottom ice bucket to store ice from the top maker....
Update: I ended up hooking my ice maker up to my water softener that feeds my kitchen hot water. It's been working great now since the calcium is down to almost none after the water softener treats it.

    • @Aston1936

Same issue here. Let it thaw, and the silicon molds for the ice balls are coated with a grippy crust of the calcium or whatever it is. I had to pull the ice ball out of the crusty mold. Hence them not falling into the tray by gravity. My whole home has soft water, so I believe this is a problem being induced by the LG water filter itself. We've had white gribbly bits that collect in the water dispenser tray of the upper door unit. I've replaced the LG OEM filter with aftermarket, and that has stopped now. Hoping I've resolved the overall issue now by changing to a different filter.

Excellent explanation! Thank you so much for this video! The ice clog was exactly my problem. Is it safe to say the icemaker is broken or can it be dethawed and put back in place? For anyone watching and reading this after Apr 5th, 2023, the part number shown (AEQ73449901) in the video, has now been replaced by part number AEQ73449909. Here in Canada, that part is listed locally for $340.00 all in. Yikes!
Update: I pulled out the unit and after I let it defrost completely, I noticed that part of the rubber Ice ball tray had actually become dislodged a bit somehow from the freezing. It was actually blocking the tray from fully retracting to a point where it couldn't fully seal to make the ice spheres. I couldn't find any way to fix this without dismantling the whole mechanism, and because a lot of the parts look glued together, that didn't look like a viable solution. I ended up replacing the unit. The new unit works fine (purchased at a local appliance supply).

I misplaced the screws for the ice maker like a dummy. Is there any way you can tell me how long yours are? I'm assuming they're 1/2" or 3/4".

Hi. I press the test button and it sometimes makes 1 beep and sometimes it doesnt but it doesnt do anything at all. There is no ice stuck or anything. It just doesnt do anything. Should i replace the icemaker?

    • @onlineappliancetech
      @onlineappliancetech  Рік тому

I can relate to this experience! It happened to me in the past, and I had to replace the ice-maker as well. I actually mentioned it in this video. While it's not a guaranteed fix, it's more than likely to take care of the issue. However, if you're hearing a beep, it could indicate that the ice-maker is having trouble communicating with the MPC (Main Power Control). Hope this helps!

@@onlineappliancetech In theory, why couldnt you just remove the stuck ice balls and it begin working correctly again? Mine is still dispensing water as my tray has a layer of frozen ice at the bottom of it.

There is no need to remove the main drawer. Too much unnecessary work. Just remove the upper tray and get the ice maker out.

@@onlineappliancetech I found it, thanks! I appreciate your help. It's $174.00! Which is crazy to pay for a few wires and plastic! i paid over $3,500.00 for this and to have these problems are just sad for a company like LG. Thank you again, I may or may not opt for it but I doubt it.

Great video. I have the model with square ice. Can i buy the round ice assembly and install it? The only thing I think might not work would be the amount of water that fills the trays. Might be different. Let me know what u think. Thanks!
