LG Refrigerator Ice Dispenser Repair: Ice Dispenser Flap Not Closing

  • A modern LG refrigerator ice dispenser is repaired. The symptom to the problem was that the ice dispenser flap was not closing. The ice dispenser flapper not working will cause warm air to enter the ice chute & partially melt the ice which can re-freeze & cause the ice to stop coming out. A straightforward "how to fix" video.

I have to say this is one of the best, if not the best, DIY repair videos I've watched. It was tricky at times, but the quality of the video and the steps shown were fantastic. Total cost of the repair, plus my time and a little aggravation, 19 cents. It would have been half that, but I bought two different length screws just in case :-). Thanks!

Wow! Thank you SO much! I am a 69 yo grandma and with your help I was able to fix mine which had the exact same problem. A few tips to anyone else doing it- pay attention to the configuration if the gadget that moves the bar holding the flap. Also when replacing the flap mechanism pay attention to how you put in the spring so it correctly puts tension so the flap closes.

This is EXACTLY what happened to my fridge, and precisely the video I needed. Great tutorial; easy instructions. I didn't trust your #4 screws, and bought something closer to the size I was replacing. After figuring out why you used #4 screws, and a return trip to the hardware store, all is well. Thank you!

Looks like a terrible design. What a great video. We have issues with low water and ice pressure. I’m thinking it’s possibly inlet water valves. There are two on these units I think.

My fridge had the exact same problem. I had called a service "expert" and was told the problem was a faulty switch which would cost $400 for a service call to repair. Your video was bang on and easy to follow. I did use a bit of superglue to strengthen the post but otherwise did everything as you suggested and 'VOILA' my icemaker is working again..Thanks for the very informative video,

    • @grokshop
      @grokshop  3 роки тому

The one thing that comes to mind for this issue would be the spring. If the spring is not seated well or installed properly, I could see the flapper not opening correctly. When I reassembled, I didn't put mine in quite right & had to redo it.

The motor for my ice flap unit was on its last legs and I just replaced that. It would open all the way one time and the rest it was half way. Once I replaced the motor itself ( LG Part# EAU59551204) it solved the issue.
Also, I was able to remove the whole dispenser panel with just friction of rubber dish gloves in lieu of a paint scrapper with the great grip on them…a lot easier and no broken tabs

I grok this video - and the name of your site ’The Grok Shop’. Heinlein is one of my favorite authors. I believe your site name may correlate with ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’? I will soon apply your EXCELLENT video to pursue further mitigation of our issue. My current fix for our 8yo LGX25974ST /06 is to manually reach behind the door dispensing lever and pull it out gently upon removing the ‘collecting vessel’ and the flap closes (so far). My pre-repair hypothesis is a spring is broken or dislodged - another comment seems to correlate. Subscribing!

this is clearly a bad design from LG. after getting mine fixed it was very obvious that the pivot (between motor and flapper assemblies) was still flexing when the mechanism cycled. out of curiosity... how long has this repair lasted for those that have had this issue?

Worked perfectly! (after the extremely frustrating process of getting the panel out). Just one question: when I popped the panel out two small springs ~1/2" long fell on the floor. They don't seem to affect the function of either the ice or water dispensers, & I can't see them on any of the online schematics. Anyone know where they might go?

Thanks for showing how the dispenser is disassembled. My issue isn’t a stuck flap but the ice chute and water controller have completely disintegrated. Went to get ice and small screws and springs flew everywhere! If I can get replacement parts it looks like they’re easy enough to replace. Otherwise I’m shopping for a new, non Korean built fridge.

I can't wait to try this. My LG is 12 years old. The ice dispenser still works perfectly but the light stopped working. And when I shined a light up inside the chute, I was shocked to see all of the mildew. These disassembly instructions will help me to access the flap and other interior parts to clean them. I cannot understand how LG could make a product that cannot be easily cleaned. Do you have any tips of how to repair light that is supposed to come on when dispensing ice ?

I have this flap issue , BUT I also have a water flow issue. Water flow is good from the pump. Water flow is good going in and coming out of the filter. The ice maker makes ice just fine, but the water coming out of the front dispenser drizzles and then just stops. The motor is still running when the water stops. I am looking for a video or advice on how to get into the water lines inside the door

I put my panel back in and my ice dispenser chute with the gasket around it cannot open properly to let ice cubes through. I have opened the panel several times and put it back in. Even breaking some of those little tables off, but I am not sure why the chute suddenly cannot open all the way to let cubes past it.

Thank you so much for posting this fix. You may have guided me towards the solution for replacing just the LED panel cover (mine got damaged due to humidity dark spots). However, as you pointed out, replacing it is almost prohibited, as I cannot manage to open the cover to replace it . So simple, yet so hard to reach for an opening...There is the risk of damaging the edges of the control panel itself while trying to reach for the cover, hence creating another bigger monster. I will try to find someone that could help me, and will save your detailed video as a DYI guide. Many thanks again!

Terrific video, thank you. I repaired my 4 year old LG LMXS27626 ice chute door using this.
I agree that removing the dispenser door was extremely difficult. I went very slowly, used far more force than I thought I would have to, and eventually got the dispenser out after about 45 minutes. All tabs were intact, somehow.
I had prepared to repair the screw post as you demonstrated, but much to my surprise, my problem was simply that the opposite side spring was not installed correctly! Incredibly easy fix, once I got the dispenser out of the door.
I suspect it came from factory this way. I have had occasional problems with ice/frost jamming the chute, but seemed to be happening much more frequently lately, and the COVID-19 quarantine finally gave me enough time to trouble shoot!
    Thanks again!

Hey, great video! I have a similar problem with the flap not opening completely. It opens only partially and hence the ice won't fall out of the funnel. Any ideas what might be causing this? It works occasionally as it should, but very rarely. I usually have to open the flap by hand and the ice will fall out. I would like to use your video to repair this problem and I was wondering if others have had this same issue of not opening fully as opposed to being stuck open?

If the flap does not open (or partially) it is most likely the actuator DC motor failing. However, if the LED light and ice bucket churning motor also don't come on, most likely the micro switch, or the plastic lever that actuates it has failed. All are serviceable after the cover is removed from the door front. I got the motor from Genuine Replacement Parts ( LG Part# EAU59551204 Ice Dispenser Door Motor @ $51.89 EA).
See Also: ua-cam.com/video/3k79F5WlQ6k/v-deo.html. Although a different fridge model, it shows how the motor actuator arm comes from the factory in the extended/out position, requiring you to hold the flapper open when installing (i.e. arm out = flap open / arm in = flap closed). Once installed and operated, the motor resets itself to the flapper closed position after 4 seconds, ready for the next cycle.

Excellent video and well made. Your instructions were very clear and I now know how to get the dispenser off my LFX21976ST model to diagnose a similar problem - flapper stuck open. Thank you for the video.
