    When Peter sang "..not with words, but just a kiss" Davy was being Davy and kissed him on the cheek. Peter was playing along by making that dreamy face. Those two are just loveable goofballs.

      I’m in complete agreement with you! Even Mickey recently said he was musically the most talented of the 4 of them. You could put any instrument in front of him and he could play it! I don’t understand what the problem was with Mike and Peter. The others loved him though Mike did in his own way.

These 4---now 3---were truly---GENUINE. They made a sad, troubled world happier, and bearable. I raise my hand to them: in salute. Thank you, for just helping to make the world a more tolerable, enjoyable space.

Then later in California, Stephen Stills auditioned for The Monkees and was turned down. When he was asked if he knew anyone who looked like him with better teeth and hair, he called Peter who almost didn’t go in.

      @@TiaMargarita the truth of the matter is, in all great bands, the most accomplished, versatile, and best trained musician usually plays bass. you need an understanding of music theory to play bass. think about it. it's true in the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Beach Boys, the Police, and many other examples. and therefore, the bassist is often the main songwriter [true in 3 of the 4 above examples] Peter Tork was the most versatile musician of the Monkees. but not a songwriter like Nez.

    • @TiaMargarita
      @TiaMargarita 2 роки тому +2

      @@pkoven I agree that he was not known for his songwriting as Michael Nesmith’s songs were much more commercial though he did write the closing song for the tv show. He composed classical music performed by symphony and was rewarded the Classical music Lifetime Achievement award by Orchestra Kentucky. Also, keep in mind that The Monkees were never a band. Peter snd Micky exhausted themselves for decades explaining that they were actors cast in a TV show who were members of a band that never made it. The tours done sporadically through the years were when they were hired to recreate those characters which they absolutely enjoyed doing though they wished that their characters had names different from them as folks could not separate their actual natures from the character traits.

      Actually, Peter moved around from base to piano to organ to banjo to guitar. Mike just stayed on guitar. Davy occasionally played bass and drums, but mostly tambourine and marachos. I don't recall Mickey ever playing guitar during the filming of the TV show, only drums. He played guitar in on the road performances. I've seen Davy playing guitar in later performances, too.

    The Monkees only did what a lot of bands did back then in using studio musicians on their records. They're the only ones to catch shit for it and it was hypocritical that nobody came to their defense. The Byrds (whom I love and was one of those bands that had used studio musicians before) even wrote So You Want To Be A Rock and Roll Star as a dig at the Monkees. I love that song but its quite hypocritical.

    • @BadfingerBoogieBarb
      @BadfingerBoogieBarb 7 років тому

      Only the Byrds first single had session players backing McGuinn. The reason was to save money for the label. Session players could play the parts immediately and so less studio time was used. Once the band had a hit, they let the full band record. The Byrds were a legitimate performing band before being signed. The Monkees were created for a TV show and were not a real band. They would eventually become one, but they couldn't have recorded their first couple of albums, even if the label had let them. The Monkees are what they are. It's not an insult or a slight, but comparing them to bands like the Byrds the way you just did is asinine.

    Peter is A good guitar player and an OK singer. My feeling about it after all these years is that he underdeveloped his talents. It seems he would've been a great fit for a lot of the 70s singer songwriter movement, but for whatever reason we hear very little musically from him during this time.

      After The Monkees broke up Peter spent or gave away his money and was partying hard for a few years...ended up doing a prison stint in 1972...then a bunch of odd jobs (teacher, coach)...got married a few more times (when he died he was married to his 4th wife). Formed various music groups along the way.

      I always felt he had a lot more songs in him (as a writer) than he ever produced, which is a shame in my opinion. Also, he really should've been the lead guitar player. Their line-up was really screwed up in every way imaginable....and some of them knew it. I always wondered why they didn't vary their original line-up in later years, and put Mike on bass, Micky on rhythm guitar, Davy on drums and Peter on lead. Their sound would've been much more filled in and enhanced, since Peter could've done strong solos. Also, this arrangement would've allowed one additional instrument to be played on all, or most of, their songs by Davy on drums instead of only "percussion", freeing Micky to fill in rhythm guitar...and maybe Mike and Peter could still have switched their roles on stage from time to time. (At least Davy started taking more active part by playing rhythm guitar instead of only percussion. Their stage sound definitely was stronger into the 1990's than it had initially been...plus Mike started playing short solo bursts, doing more of a lead than he had been doing in past decades. He certainly seemed capable of doing more when he put his mind to it.)

      Peter had some serious problems, the major one being alcoholism (and the lesser one drugs). He also had Asperger's but wasn't diagnosed until 2009. I think he gave away his money because he didn't feel worthy of it. Then, when he was down and out, no one jumped in to help him. Such a shame.

    Just seems wrong for them to be doing one of Mike's songs without him. There were plenty of Monkees hits written by other songwriters they could have chosen. Not sure why they chose this one since it is not well suited for either Tork's or Dolenz's voices.

    • @budgles

      chuckschilling Mike didn't write this. I know he traditionally sung it, but Peter did a nice job, and it was good to hear a new take. I personally love Peter's soft spoken folky sound, as much as I like Mike's Houston tenor and rockabilly sound. I agree Mike's vocals are better suited to this one, but it's as much their song as his.

      Davy is my fave IF I had to pick one. I think is dancing is off as is his singing a lot. Perhaps in relation to the type of music they perform (he's great for variety and musical theatre). But - he's awesome nonetheless. Wouldn't change a single maraca about him ❣️ x
