    As a trio, the Monkees performed on Laugh-In, the Glen Campbell variety show, the Tonight Show, Johnny Cash show, Hollywood Squares and Saturday morning commercials. The tv show ended its prime time run but was very popular on Saturday morning tv for several years. As a trio, they released 2 albums which were very listenable but not as commercial. They also toured as a trio during this time. They were still very busy in 1969.

In the commentary for the video release, Micky stated that Mike gave Peter a gold watch, engraved with "Good luck, from the guys down at the office" , I may be misquoting that, but it was something along those lines. I guess Peter wanted out, but he didn't think the gold watch was very funny. When i was a kid, a person could get monkee records on the back of cereal boxes. You could cut them out and play them on a record player. I always wondered why Peter wasn't featured in the picture on the record. I guess because he had quit the group, they didn't think he should be recognized.

    I would have loved an opportunity to simply sit and chat with Goldie Hawn. George Burns often credited Gracie Allen for all of their success because "she was smart enough to play dumb." Grace was, indeed, a brilliant comedienne. I honestly conclude that Hawn was exceptionally intelligent (which I hope served her well in other aspects of business & living) as well. She was a performance gem! That was just part of the on-topic, as a blend was stipulated. I know (from living back then) that some eschewed the Monkees as being "phony." While the guys were initially assembled to be comedic actors, they had talent and knew they could do it. They had to threaten (humorously) but forged & wore their crowns. Bravo!

      Mike, Micky and Peter grew beards during the "Headquarters" sessions in early '67. They are noticeable in the last episode of the first season, Monkees On Tour. They do a brief intro explaining the episode. Mike, Micky and Peter wear long grey false beards, clean shaven Davy does not. It’s been said that season 3 of the Monkees was proposed with a new format; what that was has not been revealed, but I suspect it was what eventually became ‘’Laugh-In’’. Of course, ‘’the Monkees’’ was cancelled and ‘’Laugh-In’’ was tailored to an adult audience. Funny seeing them on this show - it should have been theirs, at least as hosts. In this case they were still under contract and just stuck on to keep them busy. Sad, really - it was so obvious that it was over.

    • @edg4441
      @edg4441 Рік тому +1

      There were a lot of rumors about why "The Monkees" was canceled. However, the main rumor or myth was The Monkees wanted a new format and proposed the new format be a variety show, but the network wanted the show to remain the same. I think by the end of season 2 in 1968, they were done musically. If the show had a 3rd season, it probably wouldn't have been successful and probably would have been canceled by the middle of season 3.
      The group had 4 # 1 albums and their 5th album "The Birds, The Bees, & The Monkees" peaked at # 3. This was the album with their last # 1 single "Daydream Believer". I don't know if the writers who were writing their songs moved on because the show had been canceled, or if the music in the 60s changed again by 1968 when groups like Yes and Led Zepplin were emerging and The Monkees couldn't change with the times. Their Movie "Head" was a huge flop whereas "The Porpoise Song" (the title song) was the only decent song in the movie. I think that movie was their attempt to be like the Beatles' album "Sargeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band", and it didn't work.
      It's a shame the band fizzled after 1968. Their 2 follow-up albums without Peter Tork were commercial flops. I think the band should have replaced Tork with another band member, but they didn't. Eventually, Michael Nesmith left the group the next year around 1970 and Davy and Mickey tried to keep the band going to no avail. The Monkees had a short resurgence in 1986 and 1987 when Davy, Peter, and Mickey toured to commemorate their 20th anniversary with the mildly successful song "That Was Then, This is Now", a cover song recorded by the band. Michael Nesmith had previous commitments with his video business, so he appeared when he could. Then the band toured and appeared on various TV shows all the way up to Davy Jones's death in 2012. Even with Davy, Peter, and Michael dead, Mickey Dolenz toured by himself this year. There are videos on UA-cam showing at least one tour date from this past April 2023. That's a lot of info, but I guess only Mickey Dolenz can confirm what really happened concerning the cancellation of "The Monkees" TV series.

    In George Schlatter's biography he lists all the celebrities he's ever worked with. He doesn't list Bill Cosby, which you'll understand if you read the book. He also fails to list The Monkees, either individually or as a group. Why?
