Growing up, this movie was hokey: I was a child of the TNG era. But over the years, I've realized that this was the Trekiest Trek ever to Trek, and it makes me so happy.
I love this movie, in no small part due Jerry Goldsmith's music, he and John Williams are my two favourite composers of all time, I probsbly own every Jerry Goldsmith score, the conplexity of his writing is unparallelled, he and John Williams are two sides of the same coin.
Yes indeed it's really the most nostalgic and clearly the precursor to every other theme to come but yes by far the best of them all and let's be honest the movie it self was beyond just ahead of it's time it was a masterpiece.
Agree, but personally I think the Next Generation version of this theme is the better rendition. It's a bit faster, with the orchestration favoring the strings a little more, and overall it feels more... adventurous.
@@AstroPsych_ The brass in this rendition are what makes so majestic and "adventurous," especially when played through a theater sound system instead of a TV.
Out of all of Star Treks themes I think this one really capturers the soul of Star Trek and the feeling of discovery, grandeur and high adventure especially starting at 2:13
I think you mean "what John Williams did for Star Wars, and Jurassic Park, and Indiana Jones, and Superman, and Harry Potter, and Jaws, and the Olympics, and..."
This beautifully bombastic track oozes with joy and optimism, loudly proclaiming a hopeful vision of the future, filled with exploration and learning. Glorious.
@@tommy516 Goldsmith's is objectively the stronger score, as would be expected given Goldsmith's training, experience and talent. Horner did a great job for a young composer and 'TWOK' is definitely a superior example of scoring, but Goldsmith was the more talented composer. You judge the standard of a film score on the job the composer has to do and the circumstances they work under, not whether the music is more romantic, heroic, or ornately scored.
Yes but it wouldn't be a national anthem would it-- not of one country but an international one, an Earth anthem. I love this piece but for me not an "anthem" as such.
Yep Matthew's got it right, production was dragging out, and the scoring sessions were started during post-production. The very first orchestra run-through of this theme was Oct 23rd 1979 and the film released Dec 6th 1979.
Jerry must have spent endless nights composing this. The sheer amount of chord changes going on here is staggering to say the least. It's way more complex than John Williams but still has that simplicity where the melody is concerned. Amazing.
KINDLE It's why Jerry Goldsmith is my favorite film composer. The way he builds an entire score from just a simple theme is incredible. If you listen to Rudy, you realize it's just made up of two simple themes but Goldsmith composed amazing variations based on those two themes, they never sound stale.
KINDLE In fact it took him a lunchbreak after Director Robert Wise told him his initial music lacked a proper theme and so he reworked his previously written material and played to the producer and director on the piano.
I think there is reason why this theme stands apart from all the other Star Trek themes. It has provides that feeling of the grandeur of space, discover and high adventure.
The BEST Star Trek film ever made. When the original television show grew up into adulthood and science fiction was its playing field, with of course the most beautiful star ship Enterprise to ever be designed. A true vision of a possible future.
MK Storyland and Abad Leonardo Raymundo Don't forget those who predeceased him: DeForest Kelly, Gene Roddenberry, James Doohan, Majel Barrett and anyone else I might've missed from the orginal series who passed
I got to see this rereleased in theatres four years ago for the 40th anniversary and was blown away. Love this movie and theme! Very beautiful and so unique! My uncle is a huge Star Trek fan and I have memories watching this as a child and being blown away.
The visuals/effects in this are so fucking cool. I think they look more visually interesting than in a lot of modern sci-fi. It's a shame the director's cut of this movie hasn't been released in HD yet. (I think)
I still remember my first viewing of this. My three year old mind was absolutely blown away. The graceful form of the Enterprise, the haunting, alien designs of the V'Ger entity...this was the film that really got me thinking, "What's out there?" Sure, it has a slow pace. Sure, it's a retread of an earlier TOS episode. But this is still, by far, my favorite Star Trek movie.
Star Trek is one of the most optimistic things our society has produced. It's a standard by which to judge ourselves, a goal to work towards, and a gentle reminder that we're capable of greatness when we work together.
Surely one of the worlds' finest ever films - literally out of this world. Star wars for the masses but this I feel is for connoisseurs. And Goldsmiths' music is inimitable.
To the kin of Jerry Goldsmith, the man who composed & conducted the theme of Star Trek:The Motion Picture that was chosen to be the theme for Star Trek:The Next Generation, live long & prosper.
I don't agree. I think this movie isn't anywhere near as great as many other movies of the genre because I found its storytelling and its execution of its ideas to get a bit too pretentious.
It was good that the music from Star Trek:The Motion Picture(1979) was chosen to heard in Star Trek:The Next Generation and got to be heard in Star Trek V:The Final Frontier (1989),Star Trek VIII:First Contact (1996),Star Trek IX:Insurrection (1998) and Star Trek X:Nemesis (2002).
The whole precept of Star Trek. It's message is quite clear. No matter how far we've come, how much we've achieved, there is always so much more we can do. There are no limits to the human spirit!
1978rharris And in the backstory, everything humanity does is after nearly being burned out of existence in WWIII and the Eugenics Wars. No matter how mad it gets, there's always hope it will get better.
1978rharris And to the equality of gender, all races and beliefs. A message Roddenberry tried to bring through since the beginning by including a cut of all nations on the ship
Yes this would be a great national anthem for humanity!! It is filled to the brim with the spirit of Star Trek. A spirit which has always called forth all of mankind to reach for the stars together!!
"These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: To explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before."
Did you know that the main theme that we are hearing up above for Star Trek: The Motion Picture by Jerry Goldsmith was also used for the opening and ending theme for Star Trek: The Next Generation?
We only got to hear the short version for Star Trek: The Next Generation which doesn't do Jerry Goldsmith's entire score the justice it deserves. Transitioning to the big screen, Star Trek had a grown up theme to accompany the crew on their first motion picture adventure.
All i can say to the younger generation is... You had to have been there. Best feeling in the world seeing this for first time. STAR TREK FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey, this is great! Thank you. I remember well how, ater years of seeing ST only on the fuzzy old-school teevee that this appeared: big screen, 70mm AND Jerry Goldsmith. Thought I'd gone to Heaven.
