first saw this when I was 14 with my family, and even then we all realized it was being played for laughs and was ridiculous and campy...and it's brilliant for being that. Everyone in it looks like they're having the best fun, and it reflects back to the audience. It had to find its niche between Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, and Steven Spielberg's films, and to my mind chose exactly the right tone. the outrageous colour palette and costume/set design are as trippy and OTT as they were in 1980, and the whole thing holds up terrifically. Queen were the perfect composers (Oscar Nominated for this), being both campy, good humoured, and totally, epically Operatic, and clearly understanding the mission statement! Absolutely no other band could have come up with such a memorable track... May's clever use of the synth/bass/drum pulsing beat was excellent and was made good use of in the movie...I think the whole movie was wonderfully scored! The Kiss showed Freddie's higher register off pretty well...and the Battle Theme is a typical May rocker - it's what they entered the stage playing at the Milton Keynes gig! Some of the actors' performances were excellent too...played well 'campy' like the original lol
@@mosquerajoseph7305 Yes, but it could have been great if Queen would have developed it past Flash! AH-AH. My friends and I were all working on degrees in music at the time. The members of Queen were such terrific musicians, we were so disappointed.
Flash Gordon 1980 was one of the most funniest and entertaining films that I have ever seen. I can't believe this film along with The Empire Strikes Back and The Shining are all going to be 45 years old next year in 2025, the theme song by Queen is absolutely iconic, and Max von Sydow did a brilliant job with the role of Emperor Ming.
Among all the Queen music played on the radio , I have never heard their Flash Gordon music played. Not once. I wonder if there are legal reasons for this , but I consider this theme to be one of the best compositions that band has ever done. Stands among their greatest recordings in my opinion.

I love love LOVE this movie! Thank you for making my day!
Thank you Queen from everyone of us for saving this film
I saw the premiere in the cinema, I was delirious with this movie plus the majestic music of Queen!
best soundtrack of any movie I've seen
Second best next to original highlander soundtrack
Absolutely no other band could have come up with such a memorable track... May's clever use of the synth/bass/drum pulsing beat was excellent and was made good use of in the movie...I think the whole movie was wonderfully scored!
The Kiss showed Freddie's higher register off pretty well...and the Battle Theme is a typical May rocker - it's what they entered the stage playing at the Milton Keynes gig!
Some of the actors' performances were excellent too...played well 'campy' like the original lol
One of the best of all time. I hope this is on the "not to remake" list
I saw this in theater by myself 4 times. I was 9. I loved this movie. Haven’t seen it since. Thx for the great recap
Just love this film always have. Plus one of the best theme tunes for any movie.
This is such a masterpiece.
For most of my life it feels like I've been flying blind on a rocketcycle
This movie is definatley the spiritual sucessor to "The Wizard of Oz."
Yes more action packed with a male dorothy lol
Was always meant to be.
Man, you drew some connection there! BAM! Spot on!
Der Song ist der totale Hammer.
Danke Queen
Epic mash up!! Wow!!!
One of my all time favorite movies! And the soundtrack with Queen is Killer!
If you have to be told about the greatness of the 1980s, you still don’t understand.
It was amazing! Just the release of so many movies that have become iconic.
Exactly, I was there so nothing need be said.
Thank you from France.
Queen's best song!!! (Great vocal's and unworldly guitars)
The parallels with this opening dialogue and the introduction of Thanos in Avengers and the "What can they do but burn" line, is kind of awesome.
I still watch this film!!! I saw it for the first time when I was 8 or 9 and still is a must!! I love it, and the soundtrack!! Amazing!!!
Queen made such a memorable and iconic soundtrack for Flash Gordon 🙂. The movie was a success thanks to Queens soundtrack .
Ted brought me here 😁
I showed this to my Grandpa back in the 1990s, and he LOVED it. He listened to the radio show back in the day. Max Von Sydow nailed it as Ming.
An all time favorite (and still on my "commuting antidote" sound tracks to this day).
Given the rest of Queen’s body of work, I feel like they might have written this song 15 minutes before it was due.
I agree; I expected so much more from these formidable musicians.
This theme is iconic though
FLASH! AH-AHHHHHH
@@mosquerajoseph7305 Yes, but it could have been great if Queen would have developed it past Flash! AH-AH. My friends and I were all working on degrees in music at the time. The members of Queen were such terrific musicians, we were so disappointed.
@@gracehinds6283 I know but.. it’s still awesome
@@mosquerajoseph7305, You are a true believer. So, I won't try to change your mind. I hope Queen appreciates devoted fans like you.
"What's it called?"
"The inhabitants refer to it as the planet 'Earth'."
"Oh, I guess now I know why this button is labeled "earth quake"."
Earth be quaking
earth = the bottom, not the planet...same word different meanings
Hilarious. Why did I not notice this before. Lol Lol lol lol
Among all the Queen music played on the radio , I have never heard their Flash Gordon music played. Not once. I wonder if there are legal reasons for this , but I consider this theme to be one of the best compositions that band has ever done. Stands among their greatest recordings in my opinion.
awesome epicness, and epic awesomeness. i can't tell you how many times i watched this on HBO in my youth.
Not gonna lie- the Season 6 opener of CW's Flash brought be back here.
That... was fast xD
Same.
Me too
Sharikacat me too lol
Same
Great edit to one of my favorite movies as a child. Thanks so much!
This was, by far, the best documentary ever made.
Yes! you're back, thank you HD Film Tributes
Campy, yet elegant. Cranky, yet never messy. Also, one of Max von Sydow's last great performances.
He did many movies after that
They sneer at the funny planet named "Earth" like its a foreign word, yet have a button on their destruction console labelled "Earth Quake"...
Gotta watch out for that "Hot Hail" too... lol
😆😆😄😄😆
Maybe they're disgusted by the lack of originality?
This movie is full of production errors like that...it's almost brilliant in it's stupidity
thank you for saving every one of us.
Sam J. Jones : You're welcome.
Great song, great movie, great time...
