DIY: How to glitter a Northern Lights Tumbler
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 лип 2024
- In this video I show the method I use for applying glitter to achieve the Northern Lights design. I did this with all glitter.
The steps in the video are:
1. Tape off cup and spray paint black (bottom) and navy blue (top).
2. Apply the decal for the tree line. I created this in Silhouette Studio and warped the image to fit the curve of the tumbler.
3. Apply epoxy from treeline up and be sure to go in between the trees.
4. Apply the glitter in the pattern and style you desire.
5. Remove the vinyl immediately.
6. Seal with a clear topcoat UV protective sealer.
7. Remove the taped edges (if you taped).
8. Epoxy 2x
Glitter used (all linked in Supplies Tutorial linked below):

Featherbear Bling: Blue Lagoon, 80’s Baby
Glitzy City: Pinky Promise
Peach Olives Glitter: Bejeweled, Kermit Wazowski, Dress Blues

Absolutely gorgeous! I very much appreciate your style of videos. As a new learner of epoxying cups I want to see the reality of making these. If you had edited out all the tedious vinyl picking, I wouldn’t have known this to be expected. So very worth it! This cup is just beautiful!
This tumbler is stunning! I love that you didn't speed up or edit out any of the video, helps newbies like me. Thank you for the tutorial it was excellent.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Don’t apologize for the "real life" time it took for the video. For me, I appreciate seeing how quick or how long it takes to achieve the different steps. The Easter eggs were great. Thank you Mindy Magoo 😉.
ratmgr2 Thank you! 😘
😍ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!😍
*Tip:* Next time put the electrical tape a lil' further up & have the bottom of the tree decal just slightly overlapping the tape. Then when you peel off the tape it'll bring up the bottom of the trees up just enough for you to grab w/ the tweers & peel... then you'll only have to struggle w/ the top of the trees. You can cut your struggle time in half!😅
Great tip!
Wow I am a new learner and I really appreciate that you didn’t edit anything out. Please don’t speed or take out from the videos there is so much to learn and this helps. Thank you for taking the time to teach. Beautiful cup by the way.
I appreciate the fact that you show each step. It really helps!! POG is the best! 🥰
So glad you showed the finish product. Oddly, several crafters do not ... a lil heat on the bottom of the cup would heat the mask enough to ease the removal in my experience. beAutiful ❤️
Everything I have learned about glitter tumblers, I have learned from you! You are an awesome teacher, and I appreciate you more than I can express! Thank you for sharing!
Great tutorial as usual! Thank you for your comments about the different colors and how they work! It was very inspirational!

Beautiful 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼💫
You are so creative ♥️. I really want to make a northern lights cup. Absolutely love all your tutorials. See if putting the cup in the sun for 10 seconds makes it glow better 😊
Woodesgoodies Thanks Erin!! I’ll have to tell the customer to try that. 👍🏻
Omg I love this! I want it!
Wow just wow I wish I had somewhere printing up the vinyl so I could try it
Amazing
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. It is so appreciated! Your work is incredible.
It is so calming watching you make this cup. You should film them all with soothing music added.
I wouldve put the glitter and epoxy on then put the black vinyl on afterwards so that it wouldve blended with the cup and not having to pull it off, then added more epoxy. Just my thoughts on working smarter not harder. I'ld love to make this. It turned out so pretty!
Could you do a video talking about hand turning vs a spinner and pros and cons of each and if they potentially could effect the outcome of your cup? :)
LOVE your videos btw! Been on a binge for 3 days lol
The best and the most beautiful Northern Lights Tumbler tutorial yet! Thank you for making and sharing this video!
Absolutely gorgeous. Hope to make this one day. Thank you for sharing. Can you post the list of the supplies you used?
i almost preferred leaving the vinyl there - it made it look like a winter scene!
You could definitely do that. I was going for dark sky with northern lights.
Do you have a tutorial on how to make your edges so smooth on the top rim?
That cup is beautiful!!! When you prepare your cup with spray paint, do you you use a flat or gloss?
Either works...I prefer the flat, but use what I have. :)
What a beautiful cup!! I have a question. How long do you wait before you pull off the vinyl?
Julie Mello I pull vinyl immediately
Stunning!!!😍 Would it be possible to use regular sticker instead of vinyl? That way it would be easier to get off?
I'm not sure. I've done a couple more and they weren't as difficult. I waited until right when I was ready to apply the epoxy and glitter and put it on right then...applied the epoxy/glitter and then pulled immediately. Worked well.
I LOVED this tutorial! I’ve watched it a few times now as I prepare to make a couple of these! After you take the vinyl and the tape off and before you epoxy the outside do you spray with a clear coat to keep the glitter from moving while you do the epoxy on top? Also how long do you have to glitter once you make the epoxy in the beginning? Do you let the cup spin on a machine before you do the top coat of epoxy after glittering for a while to let it set? Sorry so many questions I just hate screwing up…..
Glad you loved it! 🥰 Yes, you spray seal your glitter after the epoxy has cured. Epoxy has about a 30-60 minute work time so you’ll want to do a very thin coat and then glitter and remove vinyl. If your epoxy is thin for applying glitter you don’t need to spin it after glittering. You will wait to spin it when you apply the seal coat over your glitter once the epoxy has cured. 😊
I love your work so much! Is it the stickiness of the vinyl that makes it so hard to remove or where the epoxy is starting to cure? Have you tried the repositionable vinyl? I use it when I paint my tumblers and it’s so much easier to remove.
I totally could've used that, but I do like that it sticks well so epoxy doesn't have as much of a chance to work itself under there. :)
What safety gear do you recommend to wear when using the epoxy? I'm just getting started and didnt even think about the toxicity of it until someone told me. Now I'm insanely nervous to continue making the cups with the epoxy, but I dont want to leave it out either because I love the way it finishes.
Kayla Queen Research Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). I suggest an organic rated respirator, nitrile gloves and a well ventilated area at the very minimum.
Hey hun I've probably missed this quotation/ answer if some one has asked you before, but... how many layers of epoxy do you put altogether on your tumblers? I apply my glitters with epoxy method, and I feel like mine are a little thicker than I'd like for then to be
Brittany Morgan I use 2-3 layers. No more than 4.
Beautiful design! Can you please share what is the best way to keep the glitter off the bottom when applying the epoxy. And I would guess that you let it thoroughly dry before applying the next coat or two of clear Epoxy.
Rainbow Kids Hairstyling I don’t get the epoxy on the bottom, so the glitter won’t stick. I sealed it before I epoxied it so glitter wouldn’t shift.
Did you epoxy after spray painting but before adding the wet epoxy for glitter? Trying to figure out how to *not* scratch the paint when peeling the decal up.
I didn't...but you could if you have issues scratching the paint. :)
I see you have a silhouette. I have a silhouette as well. Where is the warp feature found? Very pretty cup and I want to give it a try. Thanks for sharing. De'
honey562012 I have the silhouette Cameo. There are some UA-cam videos that go over how to warp your decals. It may have to be the business designer edition, I can’t remember. It’s called conical warp.
This tumbler is simply a dream! You are extremely talented. Where do you buy your tumblers? I am just starting my tumbler business so I am looking to stay as lean as possible.

@@MinderellaCreations Thank you so much! I really love your work 😊
Great job! Truly captivating!
My questions...
What did you do with the excess glitter that fell on the paper while making it?
Do you think you'll do this design again (or was once enough?)
Do you foresee yourself making and selling these???
I save my runoff glitter.
I have another one on my waitlist as I do sell the cups.
@@MinderellaCreations I would love to see what you end up doing with some of the runoff glitter! I imagine that if you just had one bucket that you put all the runoff glitter in, then eventually you have quite a blend to play with and enjoy designing with!
Gabriellah's Dancing Heart I sort them into like colors. So it’s not just a big rainbow. I’ve not used it yet. Lol
Maybe next time use white contact paper. It sticks well and is less expensive. Beautiful cup
Hey ;-) Where did you get that green little shovel for sprinkling the glitter??? I need some for sure!
Nissa Sultanian I got it from an order with solarcolordust.com
What do you think putting the northern lights in the top coat or will it affect the finish coat?
If you put glitter on you need to deal with epoxy for it to be smooth. It’s rough after it is applied.
What would be the difference in doing the entire cup the. Adding black vinyl trees latter? Instead of doing the while and having to weed them off.
It’s totally preference. 😊
I would love to try this, but most of these colors are unavailable. Do you have any suggestions for substitutes? Thank you. This is so pretty
Heather Petit I don’t. I would just look around for something that looks similar wherever you’re able to find colors. Make it unique. It doesn’t have to be the exact same colors to do the technique.
when did you take the tape of of the top and bottom when epoxying it the last time?
I always remove tape after epoxying after about 45 minutes to an hour.
Where did you get the tree line? I love this cup!
Diane Schwartz I purchased a few different tree lines and created my own using those.
I have been looking for every ware for precut vinyl you used for this tumbler, can anyone suggest a site that sells precut vinyl like the design used in this video?
Bountiful design by the way, I want to repeat it
I purchased a few tree line scenes and pieced them together to make this. You might be able to find precut on Etsy to use.
Did you put a layer of epoxy on after spraying the cup? If not, how did you keep the vinyl from pulling the paint up when you removed it?
I didn’t. It hasn’t pulled up for me because I do it and pull it within the same night. 😊
What type of vinyl you use for stencil? I love it
651 😊
Hi- did you epoxy the base coat of your spray paint first, or what did you do prior???
I painted, placed vinyl, epoxied, glittered, pulled vinyl.
When do you remove the tape? After you apply the epoxy and while it is still tacky remove it?
Yes, depending on your epoxy. Between 20 and 45 minutes.
How long after glittering do you wait to put the epoxy coat on? I may have missed it if you said it. And I apologize if you did. I watched the video numerous times and my cup worked out great!
I wait at least 4-6 hours. Usually just wait until the next night.
@@MinderellaCreations Thank you! Do you spray it with anything before epoxy?
@@Christine-rx8di Haha...sometimes yes and sometimes no...I typically do spray with a sealer, like rustoleum 2x clear gloss...but since the epoxy soaks up the glitter fairly well and it doesn't move much because I'm not putting an excess on, I've also been okay to apply it directly without.
Is there a way to warp or do something like that with a design on design space , so it fits the curve of the cup ?
Silhouette has a warp (conical warp) feature. I’m not sure about design space.
This cup is pretty. Do you not save your glitter? It broke my heart to see all the glitter coming off your cup and just mixing on your paper!
I save the mixes. 😊
i saw another video where they used a heat gun to warm the vinyl and epoxy a little before peeling
I’m sorry if you’ve answered this before and I haven’t seen. Would it be easier to use black vinyl and apply it after the glitter?
Natacha Dozier You could do that. I wanted the effect of pulling the vinyl and leaving the dimension of the glitter 😊 More work for sure, but it was just the look I was going for and honestly I was worried I wouldn’t be able to place the trees to cover all the glitter if I got a little heavy handed and crazy. Lol 😊
Minderella Creations ahh that makes sense. Thank you for your reply!
THANK YOU for doing a tutorial and being a DECENT PERSON! I was hoping someone would do a tutorial that I could buy the glitter from! Littleleeandrose did one but she's a horrible person, liar and scammer and I don't order from people like that (especially after she called me a Satan worshiper for daring to like a TV SHOW! -- i'm serious!). You seem like a much more sane/rational person and I will be more than happy to ORDER FROM YOU :)
Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear that. I don't sell glitter but I have many amazing friends that do. Check out my supplies video with links to them all. :)
Check out this video and in the description there is also a link to my original one with glitter links as well:
ua-cam.com/video/3Nw7v7GB-j8/v-deo.html
Do you save your discarded/mixed glitter?
MyssLadyDiva Always!!!
how can I order one of these amazing cups ?
Hi Courtney! I have my facebook page and group information in the video description which is where you can go to see when I'm accepting orders. :)
I love your cup and colors but would have liked to see your colors of glitter shown . We’re so limited what we can buy here in store that viewing the glitters would allow me to try and color match.
Great video tho!
Christine Hi! All of my colors are listed and in my supplies tutorial I have links to the suppliers where you can find the exact glitters for referencing the colors. Hope that helps!!

There’s a specific vinyl that’s meant for etching and I feel like it would be a perfect application for this project - its called Oramask, and I think it sticks enough to mask but easier to peel since its meant to be taken off. Hope that’s a helpful (and new) suggestion
Candice Fortunato Thanks!
I was going to say the same thing. ;) beautiful cup! I'm gonna attempt this design I think. Thank you
can you tell me where you bought you spoon from please
Deanna Carr It came with an order from solarcolordust.com
631 or 651 for the vinyl? If I had to guess I would say 631 since that is the non-permanent?
I used 651 for the stenciling. I didn't want it to get epoxy under it. 631 probably would have worked fine as well, I just have more 651.
