Like most great surprises, I stumbled across this concert on here and was blown away by their high quality live delivery..... and as for this song........ the live version generates such energy it just knocks the studio version into submission.... this is totally mesmeric!!! Genius!
Wow, went to The Cars show 1984 in Seattle with my girlfriend, they rocked for 2 hours, my favorite concert ever, and I've been to a hundred! Thankyou Cars! RIP Ric and Ben, you showed us a way out of the 70's.

Exactly.....the studio version doesn't have the edge this does. The first time I heard this, I played it over and over and over again. Love it!!! And yes, the 'BASS' sounds better here on this version doesn't it Berlin? ;-)

Greg Hawkes is the x-factor. That keyboard and his other contributions are what gave the cars that different sound and the rock into new wave effect. He’s so good.
I remember seeing this tour at Merriwether Post Pavilion in Maryland. Was hoping they'd play this song and was so thrilled they did - and the whole crowd clapped along. This is REAL music. Salute, Cars. Salute.
They played Dream Away on the 84/85 Heartbeat City tour at Merriweather Post Pavillion and also on the 1982 Shake It Up tour at the Capitol Centre. I was there for both shows - Brian
Yes, there's something so mysterious about this song, the way it builds. It sounds great on the "Shake it Up" album but live, its something else. You can even forgive Ric's clunky lyric "Chicken encounters, fill your bowls". Brilliant when the bass comes in, and Mr. Orr is looking incandescent in this performance. Whew!!
Gina Fernandez, cool. I envy you. I always liked the Cars, but in the last few years, I've become fanatical about them. I never did see them in concert, even when they performed right down where I live for Lollapalooza. Smh. I regret that a lot.

Yes, isn't that moment wonderful? The crowd responds in kind not only because it's a cool, phat musical moment but because they hear that the bass is actually the linking element in this performance of the song, bringing all of the other layers of sound in and typing them together.
I was actually at this exact concert, in Houston at The Summit (which is now Lakewood Church!) It was SO GOOD, you never wanted it to end. Just flawless musicianship from start to finish...incredible songwriting. The stage set was really cool and ahead of its time.
