This version just blows all others away. MUCH more exciting than the Live in Houston 1984-85 version. How many of you noticed the intense growl around 3:35? . . . and some people say the Cars were boring onstage. Well, some people are insane!
Was just thinking the exact same thing. They were at the top of their game here and exciting like a rock band. The later tours were pretty, shall we say, static.
IF The Cars recorded this song in the studio the exact same way it was performed in this video you would have absolute perfection! One of the most underrated songs of all time.....PERIOD!!!
This version is magical. It’s from 1982. It sounds like it was just recorded. An amazingly talented band. Glad at Ric got to see them get into the HOF. So long overdue.
Love, Love this song! Just like Gregg Hawkes said in his acceptance speech at the Rock and roll hall of fame, without Ben and his talent and rockstar good looks they wouldn't be there!
Benjamin was the best singer in the Cars. His vocals made the Cars. The mold was broken when he was born and his son looks a lot like his dad. When he was sick and in the first video he was still Beautiful to me just like he was on the inside. R. I.P. Beautiful man you’re missed so much by so many. ❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
Have you watched Benjamin's final interview with the band? It is on The Cars: Live from Germany, don't recall the exact name of the DVD. It was an extra added to the release. It was so heartbreaking to see this once handsome strong man so sick and on death's door. But he had the grace to be seen and say his peace with his band mates, wearing his beloved Brown's jersey. I have been a Cars fan since 1978, and this interview made BO even more revered to me. Thanks for the vids.
What a voice, what a sound, wow, Benjamin is really something special. And the "other four" are, of course, fantastic. Rest in peace our unforgettable Benjamin.
I just commented on Facebook that each generation seems to think the music of their youth was the best. But like most people here I rarely turn on the radio anymore. I know there is art and music being played there but I just cannot relate. I thank a friend so long ago who introduced me to The Cars back in 1978, It took me a little while to get the hang of their music. I dare say that I don't go more than a few days without hearing a great tune by this great band. Yes Ben was underrated as a vocalist and as a bass player. You can tell that he put a lot of thought into his bass notes. He was a very active bass player. About as active as another one of my all-time great bass players; John McVie. I think that The Cars music is timeless and just as relevant today as it was in the late 1970's to the late 1980's.
"Yes Ben was underrated as a vocalist and as a bass player. " a fact which could have been eradicated with occasional and much more regular, accolades put out there by the 'leader of the band'. Yes, I have heard Ric say - after his death - Ben Orr was "phenomenal". Well, buddy; perhaps you should have given MORE credit where credit was due, when you had the opportunity and when that person was alive! Perhaps you should have given him more prominence in those gimmicky videos you produced which ALWAYS featured you. So, you were the song-writer. Newsflash, you wouldn't have made it to where you were w/o Benjamin Orr; much less the masterful contributions of Elliot, David and Greg; all brilliantly talented musicians, who fleshed out your songs. If Ben Orr was not given the recognition in the music industry deserved, it was due to the silence fr the one person who could have raised him up. The first two Cars albums were the best. After that, you sold out and kept putting out insipid pop poo-poo. It sucked the passion out of the boys, who were much tougher rockers, suddenly finding themselves reined into toned- down mediocrity. There was a rally with 86's "Door To Door" which included the brilliant & somehow poignant "Everything You Say" and the hard driving rock metal "Double-Trouble", but by then you'd lost your charter member fans. They weren't listening anymore. Take this as one person's observations and opinions who knows a little bit about psycho-social dynamics and rock star ego.
moodylicious imhop one could say all of The Cars albums were insipid pop crap. (I listen to jazz and classical) This was a great band because of their unique identity *they all crafted,* but Ric's songs *were* the multi stage rocket. Heartbeat City to this day is amazing to listen to (especially with head phones) and was the point at which The Cars turned their "insipid pop rock" into high art. *The whole record is consistently good, well crafted, and one of those moments in rock when a band strives for perfection in what they uniquely do, and attains it.* This was allowed to happen in the 80's, why we have masterpieces like Synchronicity, Brothers In Arms, Purple Rain, The Fixx's Reach The Beach, Born In The USA, and a number of other "pinnacle" 80s pop masterpieces. Sorry but your cynical perspective doesn't hold water when one simply takes a listen to Heartbeat City which is rounded out with songs like Drive and wrapped up with the atmospheric Heart Beat City. (especially considering the artless cookie cutter shit passing for pop today) Your pooing on the timeless masterpiece Hearbeat City just doesn't work. Ben was abused by Ric? I seriously doubt it, as Ric said, he knew some of the songs he wrote were going strait to Ben. Of course Ric had high expectations and a sense of excited anticipation when taking a song to Ben, why? because *Ben stepped up to the plate and knocked those songs out of the park.* To suggest there wasn't mutual admiration and respect in this band *is just silly.* Don Henley was really on to something when he appropriately named his 1984 masterpiece "Building The Perfect Beast", that's what bands were striving for in the 80s, let's celebrate that unique time in pop music, it's not going to be repeated.
I am the biggest cars fan! It sucks that I was born in the late ninetys! Iblove everything about the 80s! I have all of the cars albums (except for candy-o but I have that on a cd) and I listen to them on my dads turntable all the time. It just makes me so mad that I never knew about Ben when I was little but I would have been a toddler anyways. I miss you so much Ben. RIP :(

Thats exactly what i said, hes a true professional a real showman he never steps on any toes. When its elliots time , he steps back into the darkness n then he gracefully emerges back . I noticed that a long time ago. He was a wonderful man.
Moodylicious, you, Sharyn and Diane have said it perfectly, and yes, he was wonderful in every way. xxx From Patricia H. not William H,
@@miksha01 true class act. Let everybody get their thang off 🍻🎶
You don't easily get amused do ya I loveeeeee this song and Benjamin's sexy voice!!!!
One of their best performances
The Cars were so bad ass, multi talented!
Wow, Benjamin's voice was incredible. This song is one of the most beautiful songs of The Cars. Rest in peace gorgeous Benjamin and Ric. You'll never be forgotten.
Insane is right. The great bands don't need to "put on a show". It's the music....that's the show. Incredible energy!
I concur. This version, fantastic! Ben's growl was stinking' hot!
I think they were even better live than in the studio, although they were great in the studio too!
Ben Culture only boring people get board
IF The Cars recorded this song in the studio the exact same way it was performed in this video you would have absolute perfection! One of the most underrated songs of all time.....PERIOD!!!
Benjamin a delightful mix of naughty and nice sexiness❤ and the voice.
Ben was a superb singer Phenomenal voice
This version is magical. It’s from 1982. It sounds like it was just recorded. An amazingly talented band. Glad at Ric got to see them get into the HOF. So long overdue.
Ben kicked ass
this never gets old
Of course not. The truly great bands and songs are all we have left from when "music was music".
Love his voice and when he’s singing you can just tell it’s him.
Quietly sneaking into my Cars all time top 5....
Love, Love this song! Just like Gregg Hawkes said in his acceptance speech at the Rock and roll hall of fame, without Ben and his talent and rockstar good looks they wouldn't be there!
Flawless. Every time I hear a cars tune I’m magically transported back to 79 thru 88. Best years of my life.
Oh, me too, Best years, Best times, Best music.
Another wonderful performance from an under rated band. I adore them all, Ben sings just like the record. And he's always easy on the eyes.
You can tell how much they all love playing their music. It really shows.
This song is so fantastic. Unbelievable voice had our gorgeous Benjamin. Rest in peace.
Yess what a voice!! Ecstasy!!
Benjamin Orr was a wonderful human being.
My two idols are gone now. Benjamin Orr and Rutger Hauer. The two most handsome men to ever live.
Ben was not only supremely talented and beautiful, but a person of strength and great character. from Patricia H. not W. H.
Same, a Cars fan since 1978, and I’ve never seen Ben more beautiful than in that interview. Such Class.
HAndsome? He looked high all the time
miss you Ben, Ric, lost way too soon
one of the most underated vocalist...RIP
Where EVER you are Benji we miss you !!!
One of the best voices in rock without a doubt!
Benjamin Orr had it all. Love love love the roar. RIP Benjamin and Ric xx
What a voice, what a sound, wow, Benjamin is really something special. And the "other four" are, of course, fantastic. Rest in peace our unforgettable Benjamin.
Was listening at work and a kid said "that's old" and I replied "so is Mozart"!!!!!
+monorailred1 tell him classic rock is better than todays shit
Brilliant response!
Tell them what Paul Simon said:"I'm not old, The Pyramids are old."
That’s great made me laugh & made my day!!! Love it bro!!!!.....👍❤️☮️ ha ha ha!......... 🧨
Бен так вальяжно подошел к микрофону в начале песни, что я упал с дивана, он знает , что он крут.
a fact which could have been eradicated with occasional and much more regular, accolades put out there by the 'leader of the band'.
WOW! Extremely well said!!! Thank you.
just telling it as i see it, SE.
oh boy, is there a reservoir of pent up 'stuff' on this matter!
moodylicious imhop one could say all of The Cars albums were insipid pop crap.
James Russell dang, you're lame lol the cars rocked.just boring as f**k in concert
"Chrome Red Eyeballs Reflect and Roll".... only A Cars's song would have a line like that. Such an overlooked song!
Priceless video. I am at a loss for words.
Right! There are no words.
Ben was born to be an amazing singer🎸🎸his voice was and is one of the kind💕💕
I am the biggest cars fan! It sucks that I was born in the late ninetys! Iblove everything about the 80s! I have all of the cars albums (except for candy-o but I have that on a cd) and I listen to them on my dads turntable all the time. It just makes me so mad that I never knew about Ben when I was little but I would have been a toddler anyways. I miss you so much Ben. RIP :(
Sensational song! Brutal performance of band and especial Benjamin Orr!!! This band was one the best on 80 years in your unique style!!! I love it 👊🏻🔥🔥🔥
Just All-American Boys with a Sence of Style and Musical Ability. I loved those Guys!
Gotta thank my older brother for turning me on to The Cars back in 1979 ...
The way Benjamin builds up his verses to a crescendo on this performance of "Cruiser" is my favorite of the live renditions. Well done and powerful.
Ben is the Man. RIP
Benjamin Orr...Total Bad Ass ! The growl at 3:38 is classic..
An absolutely killer version of the song. Menacing in places with a lovely guitar string tap at 3:58!
This song really doesn’t have to end.
Right
Graduated high school in 82. These guys were a big part of my nights cruisin on Friday nights.
same here but 84
@@tedp7773 Class of '85 here ! Was cruisin' in my 73 Orange Suiperbeetle then my Datsun B210, Cars cassette tapes a blastin' !
Ditto, class of 81. The Shake It Up album blasting away on my Radio Shack 8-track tape car stereo in my Datsun B210. Now currently in 2022, the CD is in my 6 disk CD player in my Honda CRV. Never gets old.
‘77 grad hear, every party had their albums on heavy rotation 😅
@@mikey102122 My first car was a Datsun B-210 Hatchback yellow w/black window fins, fun little car. Just realized they morphed into Nissan.
Wow, unbelievable how great they were and Benjamin was something special. His voice incredible. Rest in peace gorgeous Benjamin.
I'd like to comment here, but it's would only be an echo of all the other great commenters here, minus the 8 dickheads. Benjamin Orr was an awesome singer and bass player. The Cars would have never gotten out of the garage without him. Someone here said he was underrated, I have to agree. This is all great stuff that we see and share here on UA-cam, takes me right back to highschool. I hope you all are having a great day, wherever you are!
"Benjamin Orr was an awesome singer and bass player. The Cars would have never gotten out of the garage without him." Well said !!
salem themerciless extremely well said!
bahahaha, good one

***** LOL, you're a good sport Liberty! I've been a smartass my entire life. Thanks and have a great evening!
One of my favorite Cars songs. Perfectly represents their unique style.
RIP Ben and Rick! What an amazing band you two put together
One of the BEST SONGS ..LOVE BENS VOICE &STYLE ♥️
Ben and his Napolean moon boots! One of my most favorite songs ever!
love to watch Ben
What a voice explosion at 3:40. Simple, unbelievable with what passion Benjamin sang. The whole band was unique.
I had a terrible car accident on Benjamin's birthday, but in 1974. That I survived this was a miracle, I was lucky enough to continue to live and get to know this wonderful band. RIP Benjamin
Pay attention on Ben´s bass playing at 3:28
Nice!
Awesome
Ben could take nonsense lyrics and make them magical (and sensible 😉). Master skilled vocalist/performer!❤
Ben!!😊❤💫
Wow, what a band. And Benjamin Orr is a legend. What a strong voice. Unbelievable, how impressive. This music is made forever. R.I.P. dear Benjamin.
You don’t easily get amused. Do ya ❤
Why isn't this song more popular? It should be in the top 10 Car's songs.
I can't understand why it isn't. It's a great song and this live performance is phenomenal.
Es una de las mejores performance de the cars
It's certainly in my top 10! I absolutely love the ending of the live version!
The best damn live song The Cars did. Every time it rocks. Always loved these guys, and started finally learning to play some of their stuff. RIP Ben Orr, there has never been in my opinion a more rock and roll unique voice.
Check out Candy O live in '79!
and then you got ROCK GOES TO COLLEGE what a classic concert
My absolute favourite Cars performance. The entire band really got behind this one! Love the Cars, my only sadness is I never got to see them perform live. They were all without exception, amazing musicians x
