Ok from Lite bright to nuclear Fusion...no no where good. Few Christmas Rum and cokes in., maybe just a question or two. Think we just have to watch it again once or 200 times again. Loved it keep them coming, we're slowly a lot really...slowly but really,.
Dude, I went through a 12 hour course on relays and didn't get it. This 20 minute video just got me the entire understanding for all of it, thank you so so so much
I am almost 70 years old and have been working on cars most of my life. I've done some crazy things with the wiring of a car, like jumping the fuel pump relay to get a F150 to my garage where I could repair it properly. I've rigged up a circut to control glow plugs on a diesel and many other things. But YOU are far ahead of me. I am amazed how younger people can jump into the wiring and come up with so many applicatiions for the use of relays. Thanks for the video, not only can people learn from this, but they can also be amazed and know we have young people who KNOW what they are doing.
I followed it easy, but having 15 years of custom car A/V and alarms to reinforce my understanding definitely didn't hurt. But nonetheless, as always great video, I've always been a lighting junky since way before the industry caught on and started cranking out the incredible products you guys use today, so i very much appreciate what goes into designing, wiring, and building these projects. Much respect to you guys, keep the awesome content coming, literally can't get enough of it!
Been working on cars, DIY on most anything for decades. I have never added a relay and needed some explaining. Your teaching is great and now the mystery of relays is mostly gone! Thanks for the help!
I sure wish i could grasp this. I have brain surgery that caused it.. I have a 04 gmc envoy 4.2L. I got a engine light for misfire. At first, i bought a relay for the fuel pump. The worker put it in. I fixed that with replacing ignition coil and plug. Then i got a code po410 so the part store said to try a new relay of the air injection reactor solenoid, i came home and pulled it out and the one next to it and placed on the side. So i had those two "the new and old" plus the old fuel pump relay. So i got confused on which one went where. There two the same and one that shows 3,1 on left and 5,2 on the right, but the others have the other numbers u showed. So what would the 3,1 relay be used on. Its either the fule pump, Electric adjustible peddle, or the air injection reactor solenoid. Ive been looking online to find a pic of how they should be inserted in the spots they go in, but no luck. Also, the relays plugs i have are on each corner that plugs into its spot.
I only had to watch it 3 times while I was trying it out as you went. I couldn’t pause fast enough. When I finally got to the end and you corrected 85 to 87 cleared everything up lol. That is a lot of info to take in. I’m sure it’s not easy to convey that much information to people in a time limited video. It was a lot of info but not too much and it did help a lot. Thank you for your time and expertise 👍
Thanks for the insight I’ve re-wired my late father’s boat which had copper wire throughout with not a single relay. I replaced the generator with an 353 amp high output alternator from a 2k Silverado. Voltage light is a little tricky because the exciter wire has less than 12 volts when the engine is not running which activates the light when engine starts the voltage is greater than 12 volts and this turns off the light, however I removed and replaced the warning light but I will use a relay with my output voltage from the alternator to pin 86 pin 87a I will hook the light to and nothing on pin 87 ignition power to pin 30 so when I turn my key on power will energize the light when output voltage energizes the relay power will switch to 87 turning off the warning light. You helped me figure out. 👍🏾👍🏾 two thumbs up!!
I think he means the diagram on how to wire. For instance you can also use these fuses to put two power sources to one light. In other words wiring in reverse
I’m starting a massive wiring project and looking at everything I can find to brush up on simple stuff that I know as well as learn about new tech that I have no experience with. This was just suggested to me this morning by UA-cam. You clearly know your stuff. I’ll be browsing through your channel to see what else you have going on.
Relays are great when you want to turn on something when something else is powered on. Not just for automotive uses either. I have a DIY solar setup that powers all of my garden lights. The current draw is very high and would burn out most relays supplied on most Home Automation controlled relays. So instead of running the lighting through the HA relay, I let the HA relay trigger automotive relay that can handle the lighting current.
Yes, they definitely have other uses outside of automotive purposes. However, when using them elsewhere beware the current ratings of the relays. Automotive gear tends to have optimistically high current ratings based on that high current is only going to be flowing for a relatively short amount of time and is not a continuous duty rating.
Thanks for the video. You said something in the video that gave me an idea about how to fix my ground on my tail light without me having to run a wire to the back of my classic truck. I know that wasn’t the intention of the video but it certainly helped me.
You can use these so many ways and highly recommend the Bosch relay guide book for more uses of the 5 pin relays. 85&86 is a coil to control a normally closed contact between 87a and 30and normally open between 30 and 87.
Thanks for the video. You said something in the video that gave me an idea about how to fix my ground on my tail light with me having to run a wire to the back of my classic truck. I know that wasn’t the intention of the video but it certainly helped me.
Dude this vid is the best on youtube about relays . have blown fuel relay but my amazon bought connector has blu red gr/w and grey. harness has gr/w, grey, blk/w stripe and org with no number indicators on it . your vid just showed me hoe to hook it up properly after three weeks of researching and hours of vids watched your frickin amazingly descriptive and basic talking on explanations Very well done. if you had more thumbs up i would be clicking every single one. simply flawless tutoring bro . ty. im subscribing for sure.
I kept up with most of it, and will review this video more closely when I really need to comprehend the content. I would be very happy if you kept doing these.
I had a pair of relays wired up to control the auxiliary incandescent fog and driving lights in my Courier pickup. The circuit was designed to work either automatically (high beams or low beams) or manually (straight on or off). This was before computerized controls; nowadays, it is best to have a relay with diode protection across the coil; you don't want counter emf damaging delicate electronic parts. Also, when adding non-factory wiring, use of standard connectors and connector pins is a good idea. If your car needs any kind of repair, the shop will be reluctant to reconnect non-standard wiring they had to disconnect in order to fix your car.
Thank you for explaining 3 ways you can use relays to do PWR/GND logic. Putting a fuse in series with whatever load you are using is a good idea. Method 3 uses two different relays, so the wiring is complicated. If you do this, you need to draw either a complete (all terminals shown) wiring diagram OR a schematic (with all pin numbers listed). If you don't, nobody else will ever understand exactly how it works, and you won't understand how it works a year after you get it working. Naturally these diagrams would then be part of the car and stay with the car when you get rid it.
While that was a little high tech in wiring, I got the gist of what you where talking about, and it might come in handy as I remodel/improve on my work trailer, Thank you for a short detailed lesson on Relays.
Definitely good stuff! I’ve been trying to figure out he to wire my Baja Designs LP series lights that have high and low beams through the factory upfitter riches in my Raptor. I was concerned that both the high beam and ow beam switch could get activated and fry the light circuit board, but you’ve explained relays well enough to lead me in the right direction. Lost me a bit with the diodes, but great info overall! Thanks!
Thanks for the tutorial, now I have an understanding to hook my 12v battery from my alternator to my Dc-Dc charger, then when the car is off switched over to my Lithium batteries. Alternator to Dc-Dc charger as usual Alternator to pin 85 Pin 86 is ground wire Pin 87 wire to fridge Pin 30 is from battery positive Pin 87a wire to fridge Many thanks
I kind of followed you (5 am). Would love diagrams though, but you explain this very well and I can pause and rewind. Love the killswitch method! Thumbs up and subscribed. Thanks for the upload 👍😊
Liked the info, but my needs were met in the first minute. Again learning beyond need is always good even though I will backup into my comfort zone. Thanks, ed
I got lost on the two relay setup but mainly because I was doing other stuff while listening in. I think if I go back and watch it again I’ll be able to follow what you was saying. I got the general concept though. Lol.
Thank you man. I have been trying to figure how to add a relay to my cooling fan as well as the fog light switch Big help thanks for explaining it clearly.
🤣 bro to be honest I've been searching the net for this set up for the longest time but I'm glad I've found it yes it sounds complicated it might be but at the same time when I thought of what I wanted to be I know you're the only person who I believe would be able to solve this riddle ,so I rummage through the videos until I found it,but u make great contents don't ever stop, for future videos Maybe a diagram would help a lot of us,but thankyou for the information, stay bless 🔥
I understand it. I would have to go over it a couple times to really get it, but thats hella cool. I was confused on the 87 a and 87 with the 5 pronged.Relay period after watching your video. And I'll understand how it works. 1 off 1 and one one, it can't be both on at the same time, correctvv
Good clip thanks for your time, my house is12v the possibilitys are almost endless with different configurations of components, lights, water pumps, actuators, fans, motions detectors, light sensors
I have so many questions for you i knew most of the basics before my stroke but now i struggle to remember the simple things i injoyed your video keep up the good work i look forward to more videos i like that you stay on topic and the video did not have a car ride involved it amazes me how long some of these guys talk about the video topic compared to how long there video is about the same topic lol and i do have some questions if you are interested we can trade emails thanks again
I thought it was very informative I had to pause it a couple times and even back it up a little bit but that was only how you wired it again cause I'm trying to put a delay on my head unit in my car but yeah I think you should bring the crazy the crazier the better and if anybody gets stuck or can't figure it out they can just watch the video over and over until they figure it out thanks for the video hope to see more like it. It was a big help
Your videos are going to help me a lot trying to realize my project for mums Audi TT. Even it sounds very basic, the more I think into it, the more I get confused how to get the wireing right. DRL that turns off when turnsignal is on. Simple switchback so far. Additional the DRL should go dimm via a PWM when the headlights turned on. And of course the basic auto on/off.
Neat Video, super cool ideas! I think we found a fourth way. In our video we just shared "Creating &Testing Relay Circuit" . I was sweating this video as it instantly popped up in my feed, but glad to see I didn't copy you by accident at all.
This video helped me grasp the concepts and workings of an automotive relay. Fo u still offer an online course and if so what all topics do you cover in the course?
I am looking to use a relay system to power underglow for my truck. I want to use the courtesy light wire, to trigger the power to the underglow so that the underglow only comes on when I turn on my cargo lights or as I unlock the vehicle when I am approaching. Power from the battery, so that is not using the courtesy light voltage, the underglow would have its own from the battery, and go out once the courtesy lights turn off. Correct me if I am wrong, would a 4 pin relay be enough? Thanks, this video just gave me this idea!
Great video! Based on the logic of the relay, I could use a parklight as a signal light, but the flashes will be alternate. How can I make sure that my park light acts as a synchronized signal light? Thanks for the help!
Very informative video you basically covered everything about how to use a relay, thank you for sharing. Just wanted to add if you use a flyback diode on the relay it protects it against reverse polarity when the relay is switched off. And increases the relay’s life span.
Yeah, a diode between 85 and 86 ("pointing" from 85 -> 86) PREVENTS BACK emf at pin 85 - required when using transistor to control trigger. There can be hundreds of volts induced at 85 as the magnetic field collapses. (edit: even though you can interchange polarities between 85 and 86, the diode MUST "point" towards the +ve, be it 86 - as shown - or 85 if reversed)
You made my brain hurt but I did pick up some ideas that I will play around with. I bought up a bunch of stuff from Radio Shack before they went out of business where I live and now I can rig up some things. Thanks for posting. I am going to subscribe because I want of add some crazy stuff to my vehicles.
I followed it fine! I love it!! Very Helpful info and its gonna be sick on my car! I'll probably start on it all Tomorrow night after the car show I'm going to. The 85a stuff was funny too! lol!
What a damn nice demonstration. Action speaks louder than words is what i felt here. I always wandered what are these so many pins/ prongs on a relay is used and how it's used and what these different numbers on a relay meant. The numbers still not very clear but i understand the concept. 👌👌👌👏👏👏
I understand everything you were saying as I wired spotlights before and it was a pain with just one relay :) I have the UK ford Capri mk1 with quad 5 3/4 inch headlights I'm looking for projectors with angel eyes with a bit of magic. Loving your videos .. john
Really enjoy watching your youtube videos. Quick question: I purchased the AVS Aerokin LighShield for my 2022 Chevy Colorado ZR. Trying to figure out how to connect without slicing headlight wires. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
perfect a car guy and his lights i have a question is there anyway i can set underbody glow to a switch but have the underbody glow flash when i lock or unlock my car?
You ca also use it to put power to something when ignition source is cut. I used mine to turn on a blinking led to simulate an alarm when the vehicle is off.
Makes sense but I've worked with a relay with a On and off switch with a light bar.. the relay was hook up to only the high beams.. choice of leaving it on or off but only came on with the high beams..👍👍
These are the videos I live for; the wealth of knowledge is priceless. I tried doing the same 2-relay system a couple months ago and it didn't work correctly so this was perfect timing. Also, something I have trouble with is finding good quality materials (wires, relays, crimps/connectors, heat shrink, etc). What's the go-to store/site for that kind of stuff?
Yes , this did help a lot. I appreciate the information. I'll put it to use. Thanks

This may be a dumb question, but would it work if I used one of these car relays to turn on a 120 or 230VAC device? Like 12VDC in, 230V out... My question is because I don't trust those relays for DC to AC devices that have such thin contacts to bear 20A as they're labeled. The automotive relay contacts look much more robust. Does this make sense at all?
Yes, yes , and yes I was able to follow along, only had to watch once, yes I understood it was clear and concise, and yes it helped me I am implementing it on my custom motorcycle wiring now
You obviously have a good grasp of circuit design involving relays, but I am kinda shocked that you didn't once point out the wiring diagram that is present on nearly all relays. Everyone who came here hoping to learn something could probably benefit from that.
Can I ask you a question? I have a 2021 Acura ILX, and I took the housing off, to put new LED bulbs in, and once I unscrewed the socket, for the bulb, it had a wire to wire connection? No bulb for the brake lights? Just the amber for turn signal, and I changed the reverse lights, that are on the trunk. Can you give me any advice? Thanks
Great vid thank you. How would you wire the second relay to turn something off. Eg. When blinker is on, the DRL on same side goes off. But what would you use to stop the blinker power pulse on an off and keep the drl off while the blinker flashes on an off without the drl doing the same thing.
So would something like this relay work for me wiring up some led running board lights to rocker switches? I'm looking to wire my running board light a couple of rocker to get the functions to work. They have left & right turn signal light function and a running function as well. If I'm thinking correctly I got everything to work correctly with a relay like that and the switches to run the functions as needed
How would I adopt this relay to a extended power pack ( dashcam battery) that requires charging from the main battery while driving out on the road. Thanks for the vid.
Great information! I can use this with my profile prism vehicle specific angel eyes for my E46 M3. As always, perfect content and easy to understand! Thanks for your hard work bro!
I can follow it enough to kno that if I built the Circuit while Watching the video I'd know exactly what was going on Good job that's a hard thing to explain especially to noobs like me
Iokay on the 12 volt battery to turn on ATV it has a relay that is connected to two red wires and ground wire I connected the terminals wrong I was jumping it from another battery to the ATV battery and now it can't turn it on but the fuse has a little glass fuse didn't burn out so I want to know if it would be the starter or the relay that got burned out most likely it would be the relay right
So many thoughts on this. I am thinking of building a custom light system for a POV to use in parades and want the additional lights to "wig-wag" and I think this could be a more cost effective option to the $600 controller I had recommended to me.
Good stuff my man!! I had a very small understanding of how relays worked. This was really helpful. Great content as always. I may use that final setup on my car for the DRLs and the rgb goodies.
This just helped me a lot cause I was stuck trying to figure out how to make my rgb work with my taillights. Saved me the biggest headache ever.
Ok from Lite bright to nuclear Fusion...no no where good.
Few Christmas Rum and cokes in., maybe just a question or two.

true, i 've used them as high power "pseudo diodes", etc
Correct ,2 working together can lift and return car windows,a cheap fix if the controller is unobtainable or too expensive.
Good instruction!
Not just for RGB/W it's a full on instruction for relay logic!!!
Keep posting!
Yes ...actually it's honest caring advice ..... its rare to find someone like that anymore...... keep it up

Thanks for the tutorial, now I have an understanding to hook my 12v battery from my alternator to my Dc-Dc charger, then when the car is off switched over to my Lithium batteries.
Alternator to Dc-Dc charger as usual
Alternator to pin 85
Pin 86 is ground wire
Pin 87 wire to fridge
Pin 30 is from battery positive
Pin 87a wire to fridge
Many thanks
I kind of followed you (5 am).
Would love diagrams though, but you explain this very well and I can pause and rewind.
Love the killswitch method!
Thumbs up and subscribed.
Thanks for the upload 👍😊
So where this video back in 2012 when I did DRLs in my TL? 😅 joking aside. This is such a great wealth of knowledge. Thank you for all your work!!!!
Dude I wish my videos were like this back in 2012. Look back in the channel, they were pretty bad back then lol.
Liked the info, but my needs were met in the first minute. Again learning beyond need is always good even though I will backup into my comfort zone. Thanks, ed
Although you keek saying 85A for 87A I am following you quite well because your explanation throw this Video is remarkable I have learnt a lot.

Thank you man. I have been trying to figure how to add a relay to my cooling fan as well as the fog light switch Big help thanks for explaining it clearly.
Happy to hear it dude 👊
I actually followed and kept up with you on this just for a change lol 😂. And as always very helpful video. Thank you for your time.
I do similar with my 12v mods,
Love this content, this stuff keeps me coming back to this channel,
Video saved!

Thanks man been thinking about sequencing relays for a while. I already use relays for the coils on my motorcycle to give me a better spark.
How did you use the relays to get better spark? Very curious 🤔
I think it was really good the way you explained it and actually answer a lot of questions I had thanks bro
Your videos are going to help me a lot trying to realize my project for mums Audi TT. Even it sounds very basic, the more I think into it, the more I get confused how to get the wireing right.
DRL that turns off when turnsignal is on. Simple switchback so far.

Using 2 5 pin relays, you can also make a 4-way switch. Useful for marine wiring to have multiple switches to control same load.
I could use that set up right now!

This video helped me grasp the concepts and workings of an automotive relay. Fo u still offer an online course and if so what all topics do you cover in the course?
It is a bit complicated but will have to keep watching the video
Bigup bro
Yes thank you so much. Had two watch twice to really get it down but this furthered my knowledge and understanding of these principals two fold.
Hopefully the one from today is a bit easier to follow 👍
The best and the simplest explanation !! Thanks mate ❤
I was wondering if you could do something like this the other day. Thanks so much
Happy to help!
Great video. How would I use the relay to make a 2 wire bulb a marker and turn signal? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
It's a lot to take in all at once but I have saved the video...can you also tell me about your online classes I'm interested to learn more
Great video!
You're doing fine, man. Keep it up, anywhere you can.
Hell yeah, keep these videos detailed. That was awesome thank you.
The 85a stuff was funny too! lol!
Haha, super happy to see this all deployed on your Charger dude 🙌
What a damn nice demonstration. Action speaks louder than words is what i felt here. I always wandered what are these so many pins/ prongs on a relay is used and how it's used and what these different numbers on a relay meant. The numbers still not very clear but i understand the concept. 👌👌👌👏👏👏
I understand everything you were saying as I wired spotlights before and it was a pain with just one relay :) I have the UK ford Capri mk1 with quad 5 3/4 inch headlights I'm looking for projectors with angel eyes with a bit of magic. Loving your videos .. john
I’m lost but getting it slowly 🤣👍🏻great video
Thank you. Very useful info! I never knew how the relays work!
Awesome man, I hope it goes to good use 👍
Your video was very helpful but is there an easier way to wire lights . Do you do wiring for -dashcams to
Really enjoy watching your youtube videos.
That was the insight I have been in search of. I will Drive after SunSet 🎉
You ca also use it to put power to something when ignition source is cut. I used mine to turn on a blinking led to simulate an alarm when the vehicle is off.
Yo bro, your alright, thank you, That really helped, Keep up the good work bro 👏👏👏
Been doing this stuff for YEARS!!! (simple)
love the content. Keep it coming. i enjoy relays i tell my guys you can do anything with relays.
it`s really really well explained! thanks a lot i was looking for something like that to add the heat on my seat
This video was amazing my friend. Good job
Thanks for the info on hooking up relays - very informative
Love how you explain everything. Thank you
Awesome! always wondered why trailer plug circuits from most Euro cars need diodes
Hello, for the first example do you need to add a flashing relay if you want that to work on signal lights?
good job my friend clear and easy to understand thanks a lot more power to you and God bless
Yes, please keep them coming. I've learned a lot from your videos. Thank you
So would something like this relay work for me wiring up some led running board lights to rocker switches? I'm looking to wire my running board light a couple of rocker to get the functions to work. They have left & right turn signal light function and a running function as well. If I'm thinking correctly I got everything to work correctly with a relay like that and the switches to run the functions as needed
How would I adopt this relay to a extended power pack ( dashcam battery) that requires charging from the main battery while driving out on the road. Thanks for the vid.
Great information! I can use this with my profile prism vehicle specific angel eyes for my E46 M3. As always, perfect content and easy to understand! Thanks for your hard work bro!
I can follow it enough to kno that if I built the Circuit while Watching the video I'd know exactly what was going on Good job that's a hard thing to explain especially to noobs like me
Love the video man! Stuff like this is good to have out there. Helps others learn! Keep it up 👌👌
Iokay on the 12 volt battery to turn on ATV it has a relay that is connected to two red wires and ground wire I connected the terminals wrong I was jumping it from another battery to the ATV battery and now it can't turn it on but the fuse has a little glass fuse didn't burn out so I want to know if it would be the starter or the relay that got burned out most likely it would be the relay right
So many thoughts on this. I am thinking of building a custom light system for a POV to use in parades and want the additional lights to "wig-wag" and I think this could be a more cost effective option to the $600 controller I had recommended to me.
Nice stuff...not too complicated at all...actually used this for my fuel pump...nice kill switch...thanks
Far u just made my day and gave me solution to my idea... your gangsta
🤔🤨 interesting stuff. I guess I’m going to have to watch this once or twice again to fully understand what’s going on.😁😉
Good stuff my man!! I had a very small understanding of how relays worked. This was really helpful. Great content as always. I may use that final setup on my car for the DRLs and the rgb goodies.
