Jeff, I lol🤣 after you cut ⅓ of the roots off then said it’s got a small rootball. Great big leaves. Looking fwd to updates of prop. Thanks for sharing!
I find if i pour water down the plank every day or every other day, that it encourages aerial roots to attach better. I know it’s more work, but nothing like having to water a full moss pole.. takes a couple mins. At the very most.. 😊.. Love your plants, Jeff. They always look amazing and so beautiful.. -a loyal follower from MA :)
I kind of do the same thing... Lately I've been taking them to my shower to spray off to prevent spider mites and other bugs. And ultimately the plank gets watered as well
I have had some success using very damp moss poles in my Australian climate aka “Sydney plant guy “. I suggest your dressed wooden planks are to dry to simulate a forest environment and that is why the vines are detaching. I know you are using the shower the wash the plants and that wets the solid chunks of wood but it’s never going to be a situation of a wet rain forest tree trunk in my opinion as the roots can’t grow into the wood .
I was just commenting on one of your older videos that I was interested in trying planks. Last night I purchased 1x3 cedar plants and plant velcro, and also grow lights. Can’t wait to try it out! This video was wonderful for answering some of my questions and wrapping my mind around how exactly to get it set up. I’m subscribed now.
I remember telling you about that plant, how I started on wood shim. Yours end up being gorgeous. I gave up on mine about month ago. Luck of time to fight with trips showing up from time to time and mealy bugs. I still have established cuttings and may try again
Hey Grace!.... Don't give up just because of pests. Lately I've been dealing with a minor trip issue as well as spider mites. I hope you give the plank another chance
Those leaves are humongous and beautiful! I think I’ll attempt to grow a pothos on a steak. I have a global green on a moss pole but to my disappointment, it’s not producing large leaves. I love how thorough and methodical you are. Great clip. Thank you.
I went to the high jungle this week, it is a bit higher in the andean mountains before going down to the amazon jungle basin. I cannot say how many times i have remembered you. I saw a lot of the plants that you have, i saw a giant monstera that was high in a tree, about maybe 20 meters above my head, and i thought, wow I wonder what would jeff say if he saw this! 😅
Wow!!! Thanks so much for sharing this and thanks for thinking of me. I would have lost my mind if I saw a giant growing way up in the trees as you described. If you have IG I'd love to see pictures if you have them.
Hi Jeff! I just got a light meter and instantly found it to be one of the most useful plant tools I have, very eye opening. Thanks for teaching us about it!
@@EverythingPlants Unfortunately the trees outside our windows block a lot of light, so I have a ton of grow lights. But, still useful nonetheless. There were areas I thought were getting high light and I was wrong! We have an upstairs bathroom with large southeast unobstructed windows, it needs a major renovation, so no plants in there yet. I'm so excited to eventually make it a jungly bathroom and will definitely need my light meter to help 😁
They all look so organized on their little planks. You inspired me to go dig some leftover 2 x 4's out of my shed. I wonder if scoring the wood with a box cutter would give the plants a better grip?
That is actually a great video idea....but will take MONTHS. One smooth plank and the other one roughed up a bit. Honestly any epipremnum, rhaphidophora and syngonium have done well for me with minimal intervention. Sometimes they get bumped or go a bit of course then I try and correct them.
Hi Jeff, have you ever had a climbing plant growing larger and larger leaves but then all of a sudden they’re small. I have a couple plants that are climbing up my walls and this summer they did great large leaves now all of a sudden they are putting out runners and the leaves are small. I will say a couple of the vines are tilted to the side, slightly rather than going straight up, which I can’t see that making a difference.
Great video! ~ definitely a 'plant surgery'. I think the Cebu Blue and the Marble Queen are my favourites...just love the leaf shapes, formations & colours.
Hi Jeff, just had a thought. The barks of the trees they climb in nature are not smooth. Would scoring the planks help them stick better or would it compromise the wood?
You can definitely do this but I've had plants attach to my drywall....it doesn't get much smoother than that hahaha. These pothos have no issue latching on, but I kind of want to do an experiment comparing a smooth and beat up board
Get yourself some Plant velcro on a roll. Great stuff or reusing elastic hair ties and cutting them to length or as is. Soft enough to not damage Vining plants and so forth.
Sorry but your planks were quickly catching up to my failing giant pothos so i re programmed the 5G towers in your area to target and slow your growth.
I have a monstera on a plank which is attached, but I need to extend the plank, if I deattach the monstera from the current plank and replace the current plank with a larger one, would that kind of "reset" the progress? Or would the monstera reattach itself to the new plank in time? I guess I could extend the plank by adding a new one at top but I'm not big fan of the aesthetic of it/and the instability.
I can't speak for the monstera but seeing it grow previously, I can't see it getting smaller leaves if you simply just secure it back on the plank. In my experience with pothos, it won't take long for it to attach itself again and get larger leaves
Hi Jeff, do you know what the benefit is to adding some Spagna Moss on the top of anthuriums? I started to do that because I’ve seen a few people do that but I’m not sure what the benefit is. Thanks.
I just like experimenting with different ways of growing plants. The plank is a low maintenance method but doesn't work for all types of plants..... So far philodendrons do not attach to the plank. Moss poles and everything to go with it gets quite expensive. It's very effective but you have to keep up on watering frequently. I like both methods
That golden pothos has three stems.... But I prefer one or two otherwise it just gets crowded. But of course that's my opinion and you can place as many as you can fit in there if you so choose lol
My pothos has officially hit the top of the board as of the past week. I gotta figure out what I am going to do from here. I was thinking of trying to air layer it and then once I get enough roots I can cut it then put it on a moss pole instead of another piece of wood. I just wish I had a magic wand so it could do it all for me!!!
I'm doing this exact thing with my Cebu blue pothos.... I air layered the top portion and once it has roots I'm simply going to chop and place it in the bottom of the pot sort of like starting over again except with larger leaves lol
@@EverythingPlants I have done my first ever moss poles this summer. Epipremnum pinnatum variegata and siltepecana. They have done outstanding. They are on my front porch in the humid South Carolina air and they grew incredibly fast. The Epi Pinnatum is my favorite. It sized up a lot and started getting fenestrations already. I’m not ready for summer to be over 😭😭😭

I do that with my two variegated Epipremnum pinnatums. They have attached to the stake and they are growing larger and larger leaves. Pretty cool!

Hey and thanks for subscribing. I plan on making a how to set up a plank video soon!
You need to get velcro tape. It's reusable, versatile, easy to use, waterproof, aesthetic and comfy for the stems on planks.
I normally use it, but I'm all out of it right now
@@EverythingPlants alrighty. I also use velcro tape for cable management, bidet holder, securing tumbler, plants, etc. It's uber handy :)

6:30 you can staple on cork sheets to fill the gap. I've switched from moss poles to 1 inch wood posts with cork sheets to hold more moisture.
Interesting....thanks!
Ahhh - the trials and tribulations of plant care. 🙃💚✨
Yup haha
Jeff, I’m reentering the plant world after so many years that I’m essentially a novice. Why do you choose planks over moss poles?
I'm always looking forward to the next one!

When you have a very well-draining mixture I use the moss to hold in some of the moisture
You need to mist the planks..in nature tree trunks get rain and humidity..
I do spray them down frequently
Can I ask why you grow on wood vs a moss pole? The arerial roots can not get water. I tried that and it did not do well for my pothos.
