I’m starting out as a beginner with moss poles so it’s good to see how the starts look. Always love your clear videos. Also your diction and speech is fabulous. No Um’s and aah’s.
Wonderful. My biggest reason why I start small, is the satisfying feel seeing them grow into giants! Almost all my plants were from small. Those big cuttings were from before I understood the satisfaction of growing from small. If I had to do it all over again, I'd get them all baby size! 😁
Totally agree. Starting with baby plants make them much more fuss-free - all my calatheas that I bought very small that grew up in my home are easy going and very resilient. And the joy of seeing the small plants grow large - priceless 🙂
Your videos saved me so much space and arguments with my husband 😂 growing vertically is genius! I don’t have to downsize my collection due to space, and I love that they get more nutrients this way. It just makes sense. The only downside: now I want more alocasia because I have space! 😂
I gotta stop watching these videos. I've got 14 plants crammed into my tiny bedroom, about 500 (equivalent) watts of grow lights, and NOW I'm making custom moss panels to hang on my walls😂
Thanks Jan 😘. Your videos are always such a pleasure to watch, very informative, and well produced. We appreciate your time and effort, expertise, and chilled out approach, giving us the confidence to have a go. So, this is my week to embrace the chop and start again, small. I just wish I could stop checking my cuttings for signs of new roots 🫣
Thoroughly enjoying your videos and learning so much. Have been transferring my philodendrons from coco coir poles which have done nothing for my plants, to your DIY moss poles. In doing so, also changing my soil to a more aerated mix. When repotting I noticed the soil at the base of the pot was very damp...not good! Will be starting some of my smaller plants and cuttings immediately in a better aerated soil and on moss poles right from the start. You have inspired me to go to the next level with my collection...thank you! Cheers!
This was the best video i’ve seen about moss poles! Ive learned SO much from this that I will be working on all my moss pole plants today…..Thank you so much
I planted my first two plants on moss poles today, an adonsonii & a white princess. I’m in Perth so have a couple of months of growing season so I hope to see a few new leaves & roots. A few months ago I had a support worker who deliberately killed most of my favourite plants so I have been a bit depressed. Starting this new project has cheered me up a bit. It’s hard to afford new cuttings of pretty plants when you have a big die off over a short period of time.
Great pointers and great video! I love this! Starting with small plants is so rewarding and a great way to enjoy the plants journey of growth :-). Thank you for sharing about WREN too :-)!! We need to help the planet! We're all a part of it.
Started my moss pole adventure recently after discovering your videos! Waiting for first 3 plants to attach to their poles. Cut up some wires last night and ready to make some new poles tonight.
That's what i do i buy small plants I'm a philo lover type i buy small philo because one reason is small philo is cheaper than the matured form and i love to see how it grows .
I just love seeing the smaller pots! Im just starting off so its nice to see them in small form as well as the massive ones! The epi pin variegata...I have one that I JUST put on a pole. I had to chuckle when you said yours wasnt showing much variegation yet. Mine isnt even showing half kf what yours is. 🤭 I also laughed when you said you have multiples of the same plants. I do the same thing! Ive actually been giving away some of the ones that i have multiples of. Im trying to downsize before winter starts. (And yet i still bought a new plant yesterday 🤦🏼♀️😅) Thank you for this video. Id love to see an update on these plants, if you havent done one already. Its always great to watch your videos. I always learn something new!!! Thank you!!!
Feel like it's the first time ever ive left a comment like that (as well as ever read it) but the ad is amazing and absolutely going for it! Was looking for something like that and feel like it's worth my money! (Definitely if you recommend it, as you are one of the most honest person in here in my opinion) thanks! Love ❤
Maybe one day you will be able to get yourself a larger space for you and your beautiful plants then you will have the room. 🤞🤞🤞 Keep up the great work.
Oh Jan, your channel has been so so helpful! I bought a few little plants and put them on moss poles and my monster dubia is starting to reach the pole! I also put my rhaphidophora tetrasperma on one and omg... she didn't miss a beat and started to grow roots inside of the moss pole ASAP and they were growing so fast! I still need to get a hold of the watering situation, but so far so good! Thank you so much for all the information you're sharing!!
I like the idea of tying the petioles to the pole! Could you do a video on how to arrange your large plants or the ones with poles? Mine seem to keep fighting for the light so some will start shading leaves of others, but I don't have much space to all give them fantastic equal light.
I am moving to a tiny car-free island soon, having to leave all my large plants behind/ sell them or give them to non-planty people in my family. Trying to bring some of the babies tho. Wish me luck
@sydneyplantguy: I have fallen in love with Aroids and moss poles because of your videos, thanks a ton. Since this video is is 1 year old now. I would love to see how are your small plants doing today. If you can make a video about their progress, it would be gr8. Thanks a ton. Cheers from Doha, Qatar.
I never understood why people would buy big, mature plants instead of small cuttings. Sure, big plants look nice, but it's way more fulfilling to see them grow and mature in your inviroment through your time and effort :) By the way have you thought about getting a staghornfern (platycerium)? I think they make for great displays and look super interesting :)
You’ve just answered your own question, some people like myself prefer to buy larger plants because we like plant styling and might not want to wait and watch it grow from a tiny cutting or seedling 🌱
Glad I watched til the end! I've been wondering for a while what to do with my cebu blue which has been growing up a pole very fast but isn't getting lusher or growing bigger leaves...just thought yesterday "maybe I should cut the top off..." and here you mentioned this exact thing with your Monstera standleyana. I'll try that! Thanks for creating such helpful and fun to watch videos!
please do give us the six month update. I've started about six moss poles so will be good for me to see if mine are somewhat growing at a similar rate. Naturally bare in mind it's winter where I am and summer where you are.
Can you maybe make a video where you make a DIY version of your moss poles?? I’m desperate to grow my plants as well as yours, but in the UK we can only buy the terrible moss-less moss poles that plants just refuse to attach to…
I got an atabapoense cutting from my mom and threw me off when it started rooting upwards out of the water propagation container. 😂 I wonder what the evolutionary benefit of the roots growing up instead of down would be. 🤔

Thanks you¡ For your little sodiroi: could you plant the roots of the little leaves up on the moss pole, directly at the same level as the big leaves? It would grow better + be fine in just the moss ;) I do it for my plants
Could you share about how you might transition from a propstick to a full moss pole? Or would you just start out with a full pole for a plant that will get much larger?
When they're starting small like this and you are watering the full moss pole, do you use less fertiliser than you would if the plant is more fully grown? I'm loving your videos and you have inspired me to start my moss pole journey!
No, same dilution just because I'm too lazy to adjust the dilution for each plant. But given it's smaller it would use less water so suppose I water less frequently :)

Question. Considering the poles require a lot of water to stay a consistent moisture, do you water the actual plant or just the pole? Since gravity pulls the water down I’ve always wondered if I really need to water the plant (planter) or just the pole since the water will eventually make it to the planter.

I’d love to see a chop and extend tutorial with a grow vertical. I understand with a standard pole, but not sure how you’d do it with the GV?
