It’s great that you react to 3 songs at once. Please react to Russia On Ice, Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled, Hatesong and Shesmovedon.
Great 4 songs from Lightbulb Sun, their sixth studio album

SW just recently released a home studio version of Last Chance to Evacuate on his channel and it's amazing. Check it out if you haven't already. Definitely one of my all time favorite PT songs.

Wilson was asked about the meaning of Halo in an interview and said that he's not a fan of organized religion and that Halo is from the perspective of a self righteous believer who thinks his faith makes him superior to everyone else and gives him some special insight that other people lack. I think you were pretty spot on about Lazarus. Lazarus is often used as a metaphor for renewal so I think that one's about accepting and letting go of the past. To me Shallow is about someone who finds no connection or satisfaction in other people and resents everyone for it. He thinks they're all too shallow for him, but maybe he's the shallow one. Thanks for all the PT reactions! Looking forward to the rest of the album, and I really hope you'll sample some stuff from other eras of the band. Their early stuff is quite different from where they ended up.

Lazarus is a ghost story. It's from the perspective of the mother of a deceased boy visiting from beyond the grave.

15 years ago this album was one of my first progressive metal albums I've heard. I loved it and I still love it today. My first meeting with Wilsons music and there it all began.... This metal era of Porcupine Tree is their best (In Absentia, Deadwing, FoaBP)... You can't go wrong with any songs from this era....
My suggestion: PT - Heartattack in a Layby

One of the great appeals of SWs music is the breadth of its scope. Personified by these three songs. The only common denominator is brilliance.

If I remember correctly, in context with the movie which was written before the album, the song Lazarus is the dead mother of the protagonist calling out to him from beyond the grave to come join him.

That is so interesting to know. I suppose it could be a 3-part analysis:
David and Lazarus are references to King David and Lazarus from the bible.
The script uses a mother and a son as a way to convey a more focused message: Keep trying despite adversity, "My (king) David don't you worry, this cold world is not for you..",
and even in the face of certain death, and to an extent, a willing death (Lazarus goes to the tomb to die and is considered dead) it's still possible to come back to life.
3rd part analysis is that Steven is speaking from the perspective of the church (or mother), to his congregation (the listeners) and saying, come back from the valley below, back to life again, and be on your way again, "Come to us, Lazarus, it's time for you to go".
Of course that would be why I'm saying the mother and son are euphemisms to biblical reference. I think it's a very strong message with melancholy oozing from the mix and maybe that's why there's layers to the songs' meaning.

Shallow is a bit of a one off song (Although there 's also ''4 Chords that make a million'' on Lightbulb Sun. Both songs are relatively one dimensional for PT standards, as if SW is saying he could easily come up with ''4 chords'' hits (ACDC, Oasis etc) if he wanted too. I think I once read he regretted Shallow on the Deadwing album, it was a bit too much directed at the North American market, where PT went on tour then, as a relatively unknown band. At that time they also released ''Futile'', (actually the hardest hitting -but quite sensational- PT song ever, giving Gavin Harrison room to shine), but only on a promo CD (you''ll probably love it). Interestingly, ''Halo'' always strongly reminded me of a song by Kiki Dee, of which I remeber one phrase from the chorus ''I got the music in me'' - it's almost identical. From the same album Open Car, Mellotron Scratch & The start of Something Beautiful would be a supertrio to react too!

Moonlight is bleeding from out of your soul means the light is passing through him, because he's a ghost (transparent).
Steven Wilson is not a straightforward writer. He wants the listener to struggle and find their own meaning and he doesn't typically reveal his meanings of the songs. In this case, he did.
It's not uncommon for him to write music with lyrics that don't match the emotions of the instrumentals.

It's very interesting the order I've been watching your videos, as I can't seen to get my eyes off of Visionary Art Culture headspaces since the day I delved into it. All of these reactions to songs by TOOL have really been such an amazing help in understanding this path I've taken as an artist myself. So, I just thank you for committing to that incredible journey! Many Blessings!🙏👋☝🤙✌

Great reaction! Some of the lyrics are wrong though, off the top of my head: "destruction" should be "distraction" in Shallow and "We've got it all..." should be "With God in a hole..." in Halo.

I have a special connection to Lazarus because my youngest brother has a very different taste in music than me and I introduced him to that song waaay back around the time when the album was released and he actually liked it! And music is so important to me so whenever I can share some of the music I listen to with those I love who doesn't necessarily like the same type of music and they like it too, it's something special that sticks with me because it happens so rarely.
The irony of the song being about an abusive relationship between family members isn't lost on me either. :)

    Hi Guys
You read my mind (well partly!). I was going to suggest you react to a couple of the shorter tracks each week. However, I wouldn't have suggested Shallow and Halo, which are two of my least favourite PT songs. The Deadwing album is, in my view, less interesting and more one-dimensional than the ones that came before and after it (In Absentia and Fear of a Blank Planet). Perhaps focus on one of those next?

Heh... I was talking about the gift of life. Obviously these tracks are somewhat aligned with the believer. See Saint Lazarus of Bethany. I would argue being the seeker is different than being the believer. The believer has faith they already found the answer - and stops looking. Seek your halo. (it’s already there) Find a happy life.

    • @initum1599
      @initum1599  3 роки тому +2

Haha, I was looking for a hidden meaning yet again :) yes, I agree completely, seeker =/= believer. I think thou Halo was more about the believer; what if Lazarus could represent a seeker?
