    "Dany had stopped to speak to a pregnant woman who wanted the Mother of Dragons to name her baby when someone reached up and grabbed her left wrist. Turning, she glimpsed a tall ragged man with a shaved head and a sunburnt face. "Not so hard," she started to say, but before she could finish he'd yanked her bodily from the saddle. The ground came up and knocked the breath from her, as her silver whinnied and backed away. Stunned, Dany rolled to her side and pushed herself onto one elbow . . .
    . . . and then she saw the sword.
    "There's the treacherous sow," he said. "I knew you'd come to get your feet kissed one day." His head was bald as a melon, his nose red and peeling, but she knew that voice and those pale green eyes. "I'm going to start by cutting off your teats." Dany was dimly aware of Missandei shouting for help. A freedman edged forward, but only a step. One quick slash, and he was on his knees, blood running down his face. Mero wiped his sword on his breeches. "Who's next?"
    "I am." Arstan Whitebeard leapt from his horse and stood over her, the salt wind riffling through his snowy hair, both hands on his tall hardwood staff.
    "Grandfather," Mero said, "run off before I break your stick in two and bugger you with-"
    The old man feinted with one end of the staff, pulled it back, and whipped the other end about faster than Dany would have believed. The Titan's Bastard staggered back into the surf, spitting blood and broken teeth from the ruin of his mouth. Whitebeard put Dany behind him. Mero slashed at his face. The old man jerked back, cat-quick. The staff thumped Mero's ribs, sending him reeling. Arstan splashed sideways, parried a looping cut, danced away from a second, checked a third mid-swing. The moves were so fast she could hardly follow. Missandei was pulling Dany to her feet when she heard a crack. She thought Arstan's staff had snapped until she saw the jagged bone jutting from Mero's calf. As he fell, the Titan's Bastard twisted and lunged, sending his point straight at the old man's chest. Whitebeard swept the blade aside almost contemptuously and smashed the other end of his staff against the big man's temple. Mero went sprawling, blood bubbling from his mouth as the waves washed over him. A moment later the freedmen washed over him too, knives and stones and angry fists rising and falling in a frenzy.
    Dany turned away, sickened. She was more frightened now than when it had been happening. He would have killed me.
    "Your Grace." Arstan knelt. "I am an old man, and shamed. He should never have gotten close enough to seize you. I was lax. I did not know him without his beard and hair." -Barristan killing the Titan's Bastard with a stick, at like 60 years of age. Arstan Whitebeard is Barristan, if you were wondering, he was using a false name.

    One of the most egregious and maddening errors D&D made was having the Stark children conspire to murder Littlefinger in their own dining hall. This is a flagrant violation of guest right and a BIG MIDDLE FINGER to their mother, brother, sister-in-law, and unborn nephew. Why not have Sansa do something truly badass like Wyman Manderley does to the Freys in the books? The Starks could conduct a legitimate trial, which LF would win because the truth actually exonerates him. Then afterwards have Sansa very publicly present LF w/a gift upon his departure from Winterfell, which per the laws of hospitality would signify that her duty to shield him is done. Something LF would overlook as he has no regard for hospitality laws. Then, have Sansa dispatch Arya to kill Littlefinger on the road, utilizing her Faceless Man skills to disguise herself as a soldier tasked with escorting him from the North's borders. Arya could then bring back his head, which would be promptly displayed on a pyke above Winterfell's walls for the world to see. And to serve to remind the realm that there's one rule in this kingdom- when the wolf is hungry, it eats. You could even have Sansa recite this line while staring up at the head. Perhaps to Jon upon his return as she explains all that happened in his absence. That would've been a far more respectable outcome in my humble opinion.

    Barristan has one of the saddest stories in the book, because at multiple points in his life, he could have done something different which would have changed the world for the better.
    Like when he singlehandedly saved the Mad King when the Mad King was kidnapped, had he not done that Tywin would have laid siege to the city and the Mad King would have likely been killed. Rheagar would have become king and a much better king at that.
    Again at the tournament, had he beaten Rheagar rather than the other way around, Rheagar wouldn’t have awarded the fairest maiden to Lyanna Stark and maybe they wouldn’t have ran away with each other and caused Robert’s Rebellion.
    Or perhaps he would have been able to stop the boat from skewering King Robert

    Upon each re-read of ASOIAF, my fondness for Barristan the Bold grows. He's now one of my favorite characters. 'The Kingbreaker' is amongst the best chapters in the series for me. I hope for Barristan's sake that Septa Lemore is Ashara Dayne, that it's revealed in a Barristan POV, and that he'll get the chance to finally tell her he loves her before he dies. This would also put him in an intriguing conundrum because his chance to do so comes while they'd be serving rivals for the throne. How will Barristan feel about having to oppose the woman he desperately loves that he long thought to be dead and now theoretically has a second chance with? Will he choose duty or love? Could Dany's forcasted betrayal for love stem from this conundrum? I'm here for it!

    • @Solaris185
      @Solaris185 3 роки тому +3

      I'm also a big fan of Barristan, but I think there's actually strong evidence that Ashara Dayne secretly ran off to become Howland Reeds wife in the Neck. The channel In Deep Geek goes into it in great detail and I think it's very convincing.

      @@Solaris185 I think Ashara fell in love with Rhaegar while trying to help her best friend Elia give Rhaegar the 3rd child he needed but Elia herself couldn't provide. And when Rhaegar crowned Lyanna his queen of love and beauty, Ashara got in her feelings and sought solace in the bed of Brandon Stark. Who succeeded in impregnating Ashara but she would go on to miscarry.

    • @beegyoshi6523

    • @ashleyofnaath
      @ashleyofnaath 3 роки тому +2

      @@beegyoshi6523 That's probably correct. However, I'd still counter that and point out that we get Lemore's description through Tyrion's viewpoint. Many expect Tyrion would know of Ashara's eyes and make the connection, but there's no evidence that he's ever seen Ashara as herself, so perhaps he wouldn't.
      In ADWD, Tyrion says this to fAegon:
      "Well, I saw him twice or thrice, but I was only ten when Robert killed him, and mine own sire had me hidden underneath a rock. No, I cannot claim I knew Prince Rhaegar".-ADWD|Tyrion VI
      So, given that Tywin kept Tyrion that heavily secluded at Casterly Rock, it's plausible that Tyrion never seen Ashara and thus her eyes. And if you think of it, it's not likely that anyone around Tyrion had reason to discuss her eyes with him either. Maybe he just didn't know, and without a proper context to connect the eyes to, he overlooked them. Also, as I recall Tyrion was preoccupied admiring Lemore's...feminine anatomy. So her eyes might've escaped his notice. I'd also suggest that GRRM deliberately failed to have Tyrion make note of Lemore's eyes to fuel this debate and get the readers thinking.

He’s literally running mereen by himself without dany, without Dario, I think it’s just him grey worm and missandei and I believe strong belwas is there as well. But just the fact that they took such an important role away from him in the show is so unfortunate. Especially considering I honestly think barristan will survive the entirety of the novels if they’re ever released, because dany is 100% going mad queen regardless in the books that’s a given now.

  • @ThePalaeontologist

    Ser Barristan Selmy, if given a Valyrian Steel sword, might be on par with Ser Arthur Dayne. GRRM said it'd be a very tough call on which one of them would be the better fighter, and that the only major advantage might simply be the fact Ser Arthur Dayne had Dawn (the magical, milky moon-white glowing, meteoric steel sword of House Dayne of Starfall, passed down for thousands of years in that family) Ser Arthur Dayne could probably cut through/break any 'normal' sword Ser Barristan Selmy might be wielding.
    Although the armouries of the Red Keep and the Street of Steel in King's Landing could likely provide some extremely beautiful steel swords for the Kingsguard, the problem is, not one of them will ever match Dawn, blade to blade. After a certain level of punishment, Dawn would simply break most swords. I would hazard a guess that Valyrian Steel can withstand Dawn, being semi-magical and mysterious in origin themselves. If for example, a duel between prime Ser Barristan Selmy and Ser Arthur Dayne were happening, I think that Dawn would potentially be the only decisive element.
    Whoever made the first mistake, or which sword began to get damaged first (and in that case, Dawn will not be breaking to the castle-forged steel or smithy-forged swords of King's Landing) Even were Dayne armed with the finest sword in the Kingsguard, as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, the problem is, no matter how great that sword is, for what it is, it cannot truly match Dawn. It would obviously grant Ser Arthur Dayne a serious advantage. A potentially fatal problem, for Selmy to counter. Yet in this universe, I'm sure Selmy would be more than aware of what Dawn was, and have some strategy to counter it (if he couldn't just find - or get given? - a Valyrian Steel sword to stand up to it)
    Even with 'regular steel', Selmy is still capable (at great difficulty, mind you) of defeating Dayne, even with Dawn. It's still going to take a little while for his sword to break, especially if it is a really good one by 'normal sword' standards. However, Dayne would know that Selmy would know that. Both would be wise to each other and be giving each other the respect and due credit both deserve. That is why it's so hard to call.
    Neither would disrespect or underestimate one another. Both would fight staggeringly well and it would come down to a very narrow margin of skill and luck.
    It's why Dayne wielding Dawn is so potentially decisive, because it can literally break right through a normal sword if the fight goes on long enough. I think Selmy would be smart enough and skilled enough to find a way to end the fight before his sword inevitably snaps. But that won't be easy. Dayne is just as impressive as Selmy. If the two fought, it'd be like poetry in motion.

I think he always had his eyes set on replacing the Starks as the de facto ruling house but bide his time on how he was going to do it. If the North won the war, he would've stay put and kept his winnings since he already weakened the other houses and garnered victories to increase his own standing but a inhumane person like him would never be comfortable with a liege lord who was his opposite. He wouldn't have go further or at least would bide his time if Robb won just like his grandfather Rickard Stark, Roose was mostly quiet and feared the Starks if they found out about his Nocta Prima incident.
