Thank you for sharing. Recently picked up a neglected red 63 that I hope to get back on the road soon. Your video has motivated me to get going on the project, Thanks again. These are quite the little bikes!

Won't mind my stating, the Honda's engine noise is vicious! This type of Honda motorcycle had an extremely harsh tone and although never did get to ride on one, I never forgot the sound these bikes made. Whenever an early style Honda motorcycle came into view, I wouldn't ignore it.
So I find it a pleasure watching a clip like this to hear that kind of engine sound again. Never a motorcycle enthusiast but always thought of the Honda C100 or whatever, well you can hear the roar of different bikes then forget about what you heard, only the 60s built Honda fifty did have a searing note.
Thanks for uploading this video on UA-cam.

Christopher, I don't mind hearing that at all! I agree - that these push rod style engines sound very different compared to the overhead cam models made later. Very unique indeed!
I like this comment alot, because a huge focus on my channel is going to be properly capturing engine noise of everything I ride.....since to me, that is a very large part of what it's like to be on one!

Yes the sound, I have a C110 that is tuned for a little more power with a bigger carb and aluminum cylinder head and I swapped the head with the cast iron unit that made it more pleasant on the ear.

When you cleaned/rebuilt the carb and fuel tap, did you replace the rubber disc in the fuel tap? If so, where did you find it. I've just come into the possession of a 1963 C105 I got running 20 years ago, but all the fuel leaked through the fuel tap into the crankcase. The rubber disc/gasket in the tap on mine is hard as rock and badly leaks. TIA

From what I recall, I never had to rebuild the fuel tap. I think that it still felt soft/pliable when turning the petcock to on and didn't leak. But, I can't remember as it's been awhile. If I did replace it, it was likely with the same ones used in the CT70 and CT90 Minitrails.
Did you try looking on CSMNL?

Questions, did you have to lean into it to get those speeds? How much do you weigh? What size front sprocket are you running? Was there wind pushing you? I had mine to 42mph, but I was leaning down and I weigh 195lbs, plus I have a 16 tooth front sprocket. Thanks.

I definitely had to lean into it, and that was on a downhill stretch. I'm not sure of the front size sprocket on it offhand, as I haven't had the chain guard off yet. At the time, I weighed around 190 lbs.
I'd say yours is pretty comparable to this one. Which isn't bad, as that's honestly not much slower than a CT90!

@@retro_grade yeah, I remember doing better back in the day, but I only weighed 145lbs. Lol I had it out the other day and with the harsh wind, it didn't have the power to push 3rd gear, and the wind dropped me way down to just 23mph. The stock front sprocket I believe is 14 teeth, so I bought a 15 and a 16 off Amazon to try out and I really like the 16 tooth, I feel that the engine rpm utilizes it better. I can run about 37mph in a normal upright position. (Mind you, at 195lbs now)

Did they not come with mirrors?

    • @retro_grade
      @retro_grade  2 роки тому +2

Most did not have mirrors installed, since they were trail configured in many cases. There are mounting holes on the bars for adding them.

@@retro_grade I love how much of a mix between the super cub and the new CT these old ones are.

Looks so so slow compared too my Honda trail 125

    • @retro_grade

I mean, it's a 55cc engine, compared to 125 cc - so I'd expect it to be? And I personally don't think it's that much slower. Impressive little bike for a 55cc machine that's 60 years old.
I have a 2021 Honda Trail 125 as well, as it's nothing to write home about. My 1986 CT110 will walk circles around it on the trail, with lo gearing. Honda missed the mark with what the newer ones could have been.
At some point, we intend to pit 4 machines against each other - Trail 125, CT90, CT110, Trail 55. Just have to figure out where, when, and how to do it. Not a video that we want to make half cocked.
