So now that the 1960 Alumacraft Queen Merrie is at home and safe in the garage, I figured I'd make a video going through the boat a little more and giving a bit of a tour of it. I hear it’s a good idea to always check your radiators too, might leave you stranded if one goes bad.
nice video
Need to get me a 300k mile club stick for my 03 taco 🤙im the same way and have owned my truck for almost 10 years and have kept the maintenance up. Mines the 3.4 v6, but the thing just plain starts and goes without a thought.
Nice! Better get on it and wear that 300,000 mile club sticker with pride! The old Toyota drivetrains really are rock solid and those things will run forever, if you can keep that frame rust down on them. I've only got 130,000 on my '19 Tacoma and '14 FJ so far, so it's a ways till I get to have a mileage pride sticker. Maybe at 200,000 miles I will? 😅 -Brock
Can’t even buy a paper manual for the 2.7L 4 cylinder 3rd Tacoma. 🤦🏻♂️
What? Seriously? That's nuts! How do you like the 2.7L 3rd gen? I don't really know anyone that has one, everyone seems to have the 3.5L like mine. I've been curious as to how those engines do in terms of power and fuel mileage. The 3.5L is just OK. I haven't tried to find a manual for mine yet - so far, I've been able to find scans of the factory manual online for things like torque specs, and watch UA-cam videos, etc for the things I can't figure out on my own. -Brock
Hey that was me!
🤣🤣🤣 yes it was! With the little exposure that UA-cam gives us and the few views we typically get as a result, it comments like yours that keep us going from time to time. At least, somebody else thinks our boats are cool and it's not just us!!!
@retro_grade your boats are cool. I'm currently restoring a StarCraft now, that's how I originally found your videos. I actually binged several of your long form videos last night!
@@BoringFisherman nice! Watch out, some of our videos vary in quality and maturity level lol. Looks like your into bikes as well looking at your channel. We bounce back and forth between the two as well (although mostly boats lately).
@@retro_grade same here! Plus some boring fishing content
We’ve had multiple GMC Canyons go well over 300k on original drivetrain. These Toyotas are great trucks, but they aren’t the “gold” people think they are.
Mines an 03 Tacoma and it’s at 302k miles. It’s needed an alternator. That’s about it. Still has stock timing belt and water pump.
The 4th gen Toyotas, probably not. The 3rd gens, maybe/hopefully. If I get the same level of reliablity that Andrew has had out of his 1st gen Tacoma, I'll be a happy customer. There's a reason that people think Toyota trucks are "gold", and it's because of how well the drivetrains held up on the 1st and 2nd genereation Tacomas and Tundras from the 90s and into the 2000s. This was at the same time that domestic manufacturers like GM and Ford were building stuff that wasn't as reliable. Years ago, Toyotas were considered "Japanese Junk" by many....it's not like everyone wanted them. It took years of great quality and success to build up that reputation. It's that "gold" perception that drove the resale value on them up, and pushed me for my Tacoma when I purchased it new in 2019, over a new Ranger or Colarado. I knew that I'd be stacking miles on my truck and didn't want to cringe or consider it "worn out" after exceeding the 100,000 mile mark. I'm now approaching 140k miles and have had zero issues. Somtimes I wonder if I should have considered comparable Rangers and Colorados, but I think in the long run I'll be better off. That's great that your Canyons made it over 300,000 miles but overall, I see MANY more Toyota owners bragging about high mileage approaching half a million miles than domestic truck owners. So, that's either because 1) Toyotas statsically make it further along without major mechanical issues or 2) Toyota owners are more vocal about their vehicles last longer. I'm leaning towards option 1. Maybe it's just a difference in typical owners, but it's kindof interesting - it seems to me like most GM/Ford/Dodge owners feel like their vehicles are old and worn out past 100,000 miles....while Toyota owners consider it "just broken in" and start wearing their high mileage like it's a badge of honor😂.
Some of the gear reductions were gear driven rather than chains
That's interesting, didn't know that! That would seem to be a more robust design than the chain route, lol.
@ i have a 67’ uk registered which has only chain from the crank, the rest gear meshed
On outboards you can have the water running even if the engine is not running
Yeah, I know....I guess I usually just get the pump wet, and then leave the water off until I know it's going to run, rather than continually dumping water all over everything and getting the surrounding area wet and getting annoyed with one more thing. (I'm used to working on engines that haven't been run in several years and won't necessarily start up the first go). Thinking back on how abusive we were to old OMC motors when I was younger (starting them completely dry), I think the water pumps are a bit less delicate than most people think they are, lol. Some of it's also probably habit carried over from jet skis as well I suppose.
Szar volt az akkor is épp úgy mint most
Anyone know why my left ones only turn but not my right?
Not sure, still could be the module shown in this short, or could also be the switch possibly. Also check the bulbs perhaps.
FAKE! First day he ever had that truck!
beautiful boat too!!!
Thanks!!!
what an awsome sound!nothin sounds like a mercury!
Thanks! No, there isn't - hearing that thing scream wide open directly behind me is the best sound ever, I love it. That's why people who say "4 strokes are better because they are quieter" really don't understand that's a losing point of arguement 😂
For some reason it reminds me of my grandparents Filter Queen vacuum cleaner.
When I made the comment, a vacuum cleaner was exactly what I was thinking of lol. We have a couple old 1950's ones at our family cabin (trying to remember the brand) that remind me of that.
Il take the quickjack lol watching you guys is like watching 2 of the 3 stooges. Lol I have a quickjack and I would of had the car up in my case a GMC 1500 from my shed to the driveway in less then 10 minutes and starting my brake job.this a joke.lol and I paid less then $1500 for my 7,000lbs series jack . You guys should delete this video before they find out how stupid this is. Lol Notice you panting like a dog.lol I'm 71 and using my quickjacks i don't breath that hard. At my age il pay an extra $600 to get the quickjack. Lol one and done. Good luck with this video. I find the more parts you have the more chance of an accident.
At 71 years old, it sounds like you have more money than time..... With that being said, getting a truck up in 10 minutes is pretty bad....trucks should be much easier than cars. You should work on improving those numbers. I looked into buying a 7000TLX Quickjack locally of marketplace awhile ago, and reading this indicates I made the right decision deciding against it. With the All-In-One jack stands, I can lift my Tacoma using those only, no floor jack needed. I'm able to get the truck up, rotate all four tires, and wheels back down onto the pavement in 15 minutes. Minimal dog panting required.
And thats all she'll do
@@francismcmanus7312 is that right? Guess we'll see about that once she's mounted, hooked up, and on the water
Sounds awesome 👌

My First Motor was a 1956 10hp Johnson
Nice, very cool motor! The red and white Johnsons are actually my favorite. I want a 1957 10 HP model to add to my collection.
@@retro_grade It was on a 12 foot Marvac fiberglass tri hull (common, lots of manufactures has the mold) that I put carpeted bass boat decks and rigging in. Bought a 1960 18hp Johnson (with the chrome disk) for $70 from friends Father and added Steering Wheel. Later Upgraded to 1974 Johnson 20(R)hp .... it went 40mph.
That is a realy cool outboard,,,, they out so much time and energy into the lines and design,,, so fricking cool,,,
They certainly are! Products like these will NEVER be made again :(
Sorry but give me a modern motor anytime.
Hopefully you're not hanging that boring, bloated, overweight, cheap looking, plastic cowl'd garbage on any nice old boat 😶
You know most women won't care about boats, but pull up with a vintage outboard like that and you'll be snapping ladies necks guaranteed. Throw a modern equivilant and it just looks like a shitty old boat. Instead of the classic that it is.
Classic’s never go out of fashion 😎
They certainly don't!
Cool as hell!
Thanks!!!
Just looks right
Thanks, we certainly think so as well :)
These work much better in a drum of water, with muffs most of the water just runs out the lower water intake (as can be seen in video). I've tried using muffs & even fabricated a hose adapter for the lower intake, but they just won't pump like they will with both intakes submerged.
That seems to be the consensus. I've had the older motors without thermostats work just fine with muffs, oddly enough....even better than old school Tempo adaptor that fits over the intake tube (looks like a taco shell).
Before your time Brock there was a show called lost in space and the front of the motor was the inspiration for the robot. Fun fact.
Ha, now that's interesting. Looking at a promotional photo with the robot in it, I do see the resemblence! I feel like when I made the applicance comment, I had some old vacuum cleaner model in my head.
Reminds me of my mother’s eggbeater!
Haha, nice! I think I had an old vacuum cleaner pictured when I made that comment lol
And the boat like a 57 T-Bird.
No modern outboard looks even close to as nice
Nope, not even close!!! Ugly, quiet, and full of plastic :)
Where are yall located? I have a 1956 allison with a 56 evinrude I want to get restored.
We are located in Louisville, KY. That sounds like an interesting ride!
Beautiful engine, great video
Thanks, we appreciate it!
i have a 15 hp 1956 johnson and i need tips on getting it starting. it was running good when took off the boat a few years back and it’s been in the shed since. can you reach out for help??
Sure, you can reach out at your email address (should be located on the "About Channel" page). I'm guessing if it sat for a few years the fuel may have gone bad and the carburetor could need cleaned. Or, the ignition points could be corroded/dirty.
@@retro_grade it wasn’t connected to the gas tank (luckily) the gas tank is old i found a video and a kit to change a fuel line conversion kit it look easy to do but the part i need help with is the flywheel why it won’t turn how how to even turn it on the tank was corded and rusty so i’m not even gonna attempt to use that one
@@Gunther.1802 personally, I would find another pressurized tank and stay away from the fuel pump conversion, but that's just me. They're not too hard to find, reliable once they're fixed up properly. I'm not sure how to help with the flywheel not turning? You mean the pull cord won't turn it, or the engine is locked up?
Ive been putting youtube videos up for 15 years now lol monetized for 4. 3k subs and editing takes FOREVER!! lol keep up the good work guys. I also work full time and post when I can. Im up to a sony a6400 and my next purchase will be a lens! Dont forget the bigger channels pay for editors!!
for the record I make about 100 bucks a month!
What makes you keep doing it and going on? Do you actually enjoy it? Is it the hope/chance of actually succeeding at some point? Is it the "Fallacy of Sunken Costs", where you're too far in to quit? It's been hard here to keep going. Not that making videos isn't enjoyable necessarily, but I think at times we'd both just rather leave the cameras behind and enjoy the stuff anymore. In all the time spent to get this stuff posted, there are so many other things we could be doing to make money or enjoy our time 😂😅 It seemed like a good idea when we didn't know any better, but now we're wondering if we just got in far too late in the game.
I am a certified Yamaha outboard technician and own a few tower of powers
Sounds like you also have good taste in outboard motors!!!
How come you don’t have an engine jack ?
It's one of those things I don't need often, and when I do I manage to borrow one of find another (less than ideal) way to do it. They're not expensive, but they (used to) take up a fair amount of floor space....now I see the newer ones seem to collapse down a bit better. Either way, I hate large tools that get used infrequently. Regardless, it's to a point now that I need one. My only debate at this point is whether or not I just get a cheap engine hoist / cherry picker.....or opt for a gantry crane, 4 post vehicle lift, etc....
Where was the tip 😆 🤣 😂 using the car jack
Yep! Follow Retro Grade for more Garage Hacks 😂
300 dollar harpo freaks engine picker. 100 bux you search garage sales for a week.
Yeah, it's not really about the cost. I get aggravated having tools that take up a large amout of floor space and are only used for one thing on rare occasion (ie a few times per year). I'm more leaning towards a gantry crane, or whether I can double use a 4 post car lift to also pull with slings and lift items underneath of them. Alot more expensive, take up much more space, but overall much more useful in other aspects.
I have never seen it done that way before lol
Yep, follow us for more "Garage Hacks" 🤣🤣🤣
I am one of the few people who can say I worked on v4 Johnsons when they were new
Nice! What years of them were you working on? OMC made the V4s for some time!
Outboard engines from that time were fuel guzzlers. The latest generation uses only 1/3 of the fuel. Makes me think of my youth an afternoon sailing around with my father in a big speedboat 200 liters of gasoline was used.
They certainly were, with the V4s like this one being the worst offenders. I don't think that the 35 HP engines were that awful, seems like I could go boating for a full day on a 6 gallon can of fuel, maybe two cans. The speedboat you were in maybe had a couple of big Mercury engines on it? But, they are certainly more fun to run that new ones. I absolutely love every aspect of them.
Thank you for inspiring me to do this at home
I always liked the sounds of that burbling idle, then the first growling shudder when you opened the throttle, and how the magneto rattled at wide open. Yeah and a distant boat out on the lake at sunset, nothing else like that sound, you always knew it was a Mercury. Our family had a 1959 Mercury 75 horse, white with the ribbed stainless center section . Dad's best friend Mendal had a black and white, I think it was a 1958 with a straight shaft, and 2 starters, the motor ran backwards for reverse. There was only 1 year they made them. Dad always had trouble with the water pump, about every season he had to put in a new rubber impeller. We ran the motor on white gas in Canada
Yep, all of the above! I remember as a kid in the 90s on Lake Erie, seeing many more of the Towers of Power Mercury engines running across the lake from the 1960s through 1980s years. One could always tell it was a Mercury engine by that distinct "whine" sound (I think my grandfather taught me that at some point sitting out in the yard and listening for them). The Direct Drive Mercury engines (like mine and the two you described) were actually made from 1957 through 1961, at which point they were changed over to the Full Gear Shift models. Your family's 1959 MK78A (I have a ratty project one of those as well in the side garage) should have operated the same way. Same as the MK75 that I'm running here. Very oddball and unique motors for sure, I love them.
Ya'll are dumb.
Hahaha stupid is as stupid does forest I mean Brock. Ya know harbor freight sells a cherry picker for 139.95. It's a must have tool if your playing with motors. ❤
Yeah, it's not the cost that's stopped me, it's just having one more big thing to put somewhere that's used infrequently. Having friends that have them also leads to bad habits of not buying one yourself. At this point, I may just go all in on floor space gripe and get a gantry crane anyways lol
@retro_grade i want to weld a roll cage for my garage with wenches and hooks. Ideal for floor space.
@@donnieji4825 interesting, I'm trying to envision what you're thinking with that one..... I've also been contemplating on whether I could double use a 4 post lift to also lift from the bottom (bascially attach slings, chains, etc to it). I hate having large tools that take up an excessive amout of floor space that I rarely use.
@retro_grade big tools small space is real. I just got my wife and 200 psi air compressor it's in the middle of everything until we re arrange the everything
Motors in the house, now you're talking!
They are still residing comfortably in the TV room 🤣
Take some steel wool to that chrome, and she will shine like a mirror!
Typically, I don't ever use steel wool on chrome unless it's badly tarnished (much worse than this motor). And, when I do that, I only use 0000 Super Fine type, not anything course. I normally opt for Eagle One Never Dull polishing cotton. Takes a bit of rubbing but works wonders. This chrome on this motor will definitely get a once over with that :)
@@retro_grade That's right-0000 super fine works great, but the chrome wheel polish does too. The style of that motor just screams 1950s; honestly, there's not a single '50s Johnson motor style that I don't like.
@@rocket99dan yes it does! Such a wild difference between that and the Evinrude Starflite (which to me, has a very 1960's look to it). Then in 1959, all of the OMC stuff started looking more 60's styled (think of the all white Johnson motors and the blue "Golden Jubilee" Evinrudes). I love all of the 50's motors as well, with my favorites probably being the 1957 lineup of Johnsons and the 1956 Evinrude Lark :)
I always love it when a plan finally comes together, but then really doesn’t. Cheers to more work ahead 😂
Yeah.....and when you know you're going down the wrong path....but you're aggravated enough that you just keep going with it, as there's no going back lol
I have a 2022 Suzuki 4 stroke FI outboard. It is QUIET and goes forever on a small amount of gas and NO oil. Did I mention it is QUIET? Take the plunge for a new motor, IT IS WORTH IT! RELIABLE all and EVERY day.
Any goofball with a credit card can buy a new motor. But it requires both skill AND taste to run vintage. But thanks for the view and the comment!

We actually ended up selling the boat - not really because we couldn't handle it, but because the Feathercraft market at the time was hot, and we ended up getting enough out of it that we couldn't resist moving it along.
You know if I lived by you I would help you restore this because this is a part of American history. I wish you luck and please take your time and do everything right. Rivets might need replacing and so forth and this might take longer than you think. In the end it will be worth it. I hope more boat guys see this and will donate their time to help the restoration. I'm in Florida and this seems way way north for me.
Haha, thanks!!! It certainly is! I plan on definitely doing this boat right due to its family history. It will need rivets tightened/replaced and alot of bottom work at some point, as it leaks bad. Floors will for sure need to come out to do all of that. I will say though, that this one will be focused more on fixing/repairing what needs to be fixed and leaving as much original on the boat as possible. I don't plan on painting or polishing anything on the aluminum. I wish to keep it as original as possible, as it's how I remember it and they are only original once. So, I'm aiming for more of a "preservation" than "restoration" on this boat, if that makes any sense.
