    I bought a 1971 CL100 @ 1973 from a sweet widowed lady for $300. It had only 123 miles on it - the only motorcycle I ever got to do the break in period. Mine was a fast one, would hit 65 on the speedometer any day and could beat any other 90 or 100cc in a drag race and some 125s. Finally was defeated by a Yamaha AT1 125 with a Hooker expansion chamber. I guess it was inevitable!

    Just got one of those rectifiers on ebay. I didn't see that exact 'Ben' but the one coming looks exactly like yours. Mine is not charging up to 6.5+ When you installed the new one...wow what a difference. My light goes dim in a matter of 45 seconds after a ride. I shouldn't do that. To me; it's not charging as doing the test like you showed & did a great job by the way. Thanks, Wildman RG3

    Not hating on these stands, but my stand is pallet wood, wood glue, and pocket screws with swivel wheels on the bottom. Holds my 18 horse up high and I can easily wrench on it if I lock the wheels. Pallet was free, glue was next to nothing and a box of drywall screws. Ten dollars give or take a few

    • @retro_grade
      @retro_grade 6 днів тому

      Yeah I mean, I get that - I've had a few wood ones that I've gotten for free with outboards and usually just give them away in the end. I think it's because they're always cheaper looking and mismatched to all the other stands I have. The other issue is that they typically end up being wider/bulkier than ones like this, so they take up more space on the wall when I have alot of motors to stack.

  • @jake16542
    @jake16542 7 днів тому

    My 58 fd-12 uses a pressure gas tank, no fuel pump on it. Is yours like that too? 2 lines from the gas tank, fuel and air

    • @retro_grade
      @retro_grade 7 днів тому

      @jake16542 no, this is single line which was original to the engine. For some reason, OMC started using fuel pumps on the "Fat Fifty" motors first. For the smaller motors, they ditched the pressure tanks in the late 50s? My 1959 Evinrude Golden Jubilee is still dual line.

    • @jake16542
      @jake16542 7 днів тому

      @ I also heard that around the time they switched from brass to stainless steel internals. That’s why on older motors like mine and yours I believe, you run a 24:1. That is interesting I love outboards

    • @retro_grade
      @retro_grade 7 днів тому

      @@jake16542 - they switched over to needle roller bearings on the connecting rods. The older motors actually use a 16:1 mix (they may have gone to 24:1 later on, but I've always run 16:1). Kiekhaefer actually used needle bearings on his outboards starting very early on, which is one reason that they performed really well (as complicated as they at times are).

    I’ve always wanted to do this but I’ve heard of a few people whose steering linkage came loose and they crashed. make sure you’ve got good kill switches just incase of the worst possible scenario lol

    • @retro_grade
      @retro_grade 8 днів тому

      No kill switches (as they weren't factory). The linkage is basically just a steel cable with an adjustment in the middle that runs between them. The family has been using this setup since 1974 and hasn't had any issues with it yet 😅. Before that, it was 1957 35 HP engines. The only real issue with this setup is that because both of the motors turn the prop in the same direction, the boat does want to pull to the right. It definitely is overdue for some new high strand vinyl coated cable and adjustment.

    • @retro_grade
      @retro_grade 9 днів тому

      Yep, exactly! Complex, yet simple at the same time....a bit to sort out with starting the engine backwards, but also no clutch dogs in the lower unit to wear out shifting! I wouldn't be suprised at all, since Kiekhaefer under-rated everything at that time :)

We're not smart people 😅 I did figure I was missing something when checking, during shooting of the video. Not only is the water not leaking at the muffs, but it's coming out of the outlet as dictated by the owner's manual (maybe I just should have looked at that during that time....but that would have made too much sense!) Stay tuned 😂

    I had a 160 for my 16th birthday in 1968. That was the minimum legal age you could ride a motorbike in the UK. It was a lively little bike for its small engine. I clocked around 75 mph tops. Twin cylinder twin carbs electric starter. You didnt get those things on smaller British bikes back then. I easily burned my mate off who had a BSA C15 which had a bigger 250cc engine. Those old British bikes were heavy and slow compared to the Honda's. I had a lot of fun and have fond memories of that little bike. They were happy days.

    • @retro_grade
      @retro_grade 18 днів тому

      Nice! That's awesome story. It's funny how much further ahead Honda's were back then compared to the British stuff, which was so much more crude at the time. (Fun to appreciate them now, though, for what they were). A CB160 would run like a swiss watch compared to a 250 BSA (I've also had a BSA 250 Starfire as well for a period of time) lol. Also, in terms of the larger bikes, when Honda came out with the CB450 Black Bombers, they were a major disruption to the UK motorcycle market, where the 650 twins had been dominating at the time. From my understanding, had the same or better performance (although, I'd need to do some reading on on that to confirm). I have had a couple CB450's and BSA lightings, however, and I'd say that's probably a fair statment :)

    I was a boat mechanic in the 80s. I hated old motors because they were usually not well kept. They were heavy and not good performers. I always liked the old boats though. I thought it would be cool to retro fit the old cowlings on modern two stroke motors. I've never seen anyone do it though.

    • @retro_grade
      @retro_grade 24 дні тому

      I've never seen anybody nicely fit an old cowling to a newer motor and make it look good. I wouldn't want one anyways. You are correct in many old motors not being kept up or maintained well. But, I've found that when the old 50's engines are properly maintained and kept up, they run smoother and sound nicer than any of the two stroke stuff from the 1970s up. Including the "bulletproof" 1970s and up OMC stuff...which seems to hold up great, but to me just sounds sloppy comparatively and doesn't have the character. Are they really that much heavier than newer two strokes? I'm skeptical. If you're comparing them to 4-strokes and saying they're heavier, get out of here 😂

    • @JamesDollenmeyer
      @JamesDollenmeyer 24 дні тому

      @ I used to work for a Yamaha dealer. I gained much respect for their engineering. I think you would need to use the old cowling to make a mold and then join the new/old cowling to the original. OMC did not use even fire crankshaft technology. Only their V4’s ran smooth. 90 degrees X 4 =360. Their V6’ ran like three Harley V twins bolted together. Yamaha used Hitachi electrical components, which made them extremely reliable. I rigged a few of them on older, stylish boats and they ran great, but didn’t look right.

    😂 everyone clowns on eBay thinking it's all aftermarket I've ordered every genuine part from eBay and it's been certified genuine checked by my dealership I've never been burnt for a fake part ordered on eBay 🤷🏽‍♂️ in fact I've actually saved 100 to $200 ordering genuine parts on eBay because the dealership actually have eBay store accounts so people if you want to save money and get genuine parts and not be ripped off at your dealership definitely shop on eBay and be careful make sure you're ordering from a legit dealership and not some hobo named Bob selling out of a backyard storage unit 😂

    • @retro_grade
      @retro_grade 24 дні тому

      I mean sure, if you buy a genuine part from Ebay, it's fine. Same as getting from a dealership. Most cases, however (at least on these), geninue parts on Ebay aren't really any cheaper than buying from a dealer. I've never typically found any parts to to cheaper when sold by dealers on Ebay. Why would a dealership sell parts cheaper on Ebay, when it costs them additional fees to do so? Doesn't make any sense. Unless it's some overstock stuff that's been "laying around" at a private seller.

      @retro_grade 27 днів тому

      Thanks? The loudness of the background music varies depending on how you are listening to the video, so I've found. I try not to make it too overbearing. Attention spans are short these days, especially with the younger crowd, so I personally think videos need it here and there. Coulda skipped to 7:00 where I cut it and started the engine. Oh well, there are plenty of other outboard videos out there with zero editing for ya that are likely background "music" free :)

      @@retro_grade Thanks for the tip about moving forward to 7:00 to stop the music. REALLY enjoyed the rest of the video. It runs like a dream ! Greetings from Sydney Australia. One thing puzzles me, should the distributor wobble as much as it does ? As far as old outboards vs new, I have had 50 year old outboards with good compression that will go for another 50 years. OMC and Mercury build quality back then was bullet proof and long as you are kind to them. THANKS !!

      Nice! Better get on it and wear that 300,000 mile club sticker with pride! The old Toyota drivetrains really are rock solid and those things will run forever, if you can keep that frame rust down on them. I've only got 130,000 on my '19 Tacoma and '14 FJ so far, so it's a ways till I get to have a mileage pride sticker. Maybe at 200,000 miles I will? 😅 -Brock

    We’ve had multiple GMC Canyons go well over 300k on original drivetrain. These Toyotas are great trucks, but they aren’t the “gold” people think they are.

      Mines an 03 Tacoma and it’s at 302k miles. It’s needed an alternator. That’s about it. Still has stock timing belt and water pump.

    • @retro_grade
      @retro_grade Місяць тому

      The 4th gen Toyotas, probably not. The 3rd gens, maybe/hopefully. If I get the same level of reliablity that Andrew has had out of his 1st gen Tacoma, I'll be a happy customer. There's a reason that people think Toyota trucks are "gold", and it's because of how well the drivetrains held up on the 1st and 2nd genereation Tacomas and Tundras from the 90s and into the 2000s. This was at the same time that domestic manufacturers like GM and Ford were building stuff that wasn't as reliable. Years ago, Toyotas were considered "Japanese Junk" by many....it's not like everyone wanted them. It took years of great quality and success to build up that reputation. It's that "gold" perception that drove the resale value on them up, and pushed me for my Tacoma when I purchased it new in 2019, over a new Ranger or Colarado. I knew that I'd be stacking miles on my truck and didn't want to cringe or consider it "worn out" after exceeding the 100,000 mile mark. I'm now approaching 140k miles and have had zero issues. Somtimes I wonder if I should have considered comparable Rangers and Colorados, but I think in the long run I'll be better off. That's great that your Canyons made it over 300,000 miles but overall, I see MANY more Toyota owners bragging about high mileage approaching half a million miles than domestic truck owners. So, that's either because 1) Toyotas statsically make it further along without major mechanical issues or 2) Toyota owners are more vocal about their vehicles last longer. I'm leaning towards option 1. Maybe it's just a difference in typical owners, but it's kindof interesting - it seems to me like most GM/Ford/Dodge owners feel like their vehicles are old and worn out past 100,000 miles....while Toyota owners consider it "just broken in" and start wearing their high mileage like it's a badge of honor😂.

    On outboards you can have the water running even if the engine is not running

    • @retro_grade
      @retro_grade Місяць тому

      Yeah, I know....I guess I usually just get the pump wet, and then leave the water off until I know it's going to run, rather than continually dumping water all over everything and getting the surrounding area wet and getting annoyed with one more thing. (I'm used to working on engines that haven't been run in several years and won't necessarily start up the first go). Thinking back on how abusive we were to old OMC motors when I was younger (starting them completely dry), I think the water pumps are a bit less delicate than most people think they are, lol. Some of it's also probably habit carried over from jet skis as well I suppose.

You guys should delete this video before they find out how stupid this is. Lol Notice you panting like a dog.lol I'm 71 and using my quickjacks i don't breath that hard. At 71 years old, it sounds like you have more money than time..... With that being said, getting a truck up in 10 minutes is pretty bad....trucks should be much easier than cars. You should work on improving those numbers. I looked into buying a 7000TLX Quickjack locally of marketplace awhile ago, and reading this indicates I made the right decision deciding against it. With the All-In-One jack stands, I can lift my Tacoma using those only, no floor jack needed. I'm able to get the truck up, rotate all four tires, and wheels back down onto the pavement in 15 minutes. Minimal dog panting required.
