I have been a fan of Roger De Coster since black and white TV. So if you think American's just want to forget about great motocross racers... well De Coster is still here for a reason beyond money. I get it on Yourube tv a nice click bait title goes a long way 😅😂. No matter great video👍
I love these kind of documentaries that get you invested in something you knew nothing about. Just the right amount of info/recap so you know what is going on.
The fact he stayed humble that entire time even with all of the disrespect from the american fans is crazy tbf. If i was 4 seconds a lap faster on a new track with a bike that ive never used against people whove done it for years, i dont think id be able to keep my mouth shut Im not a Motorcross fan but this was sick man, keep up the good work.
I was expecting more left turns on the American tracks ... 🤣 Seriously, when a nation that is very large (I'm talking landmass), anything that's not 'local' gets dumped in the trash, and it becomes a very rude awakening when someone from outside wipes the floor with the local "best" with the local equipment ... something that's often happened here in Australia too.
And set the fastest Time at the test track with Only his actual suspension that He uses On his proper race bike, had to dial everything in and still kicked ass On the entire field, would love to see him absolutely smoke tomac in a one On one race outdoors,if herlings don't get injuries then tomac ain't gonna be champion for very long lol 😂😂😂😂
I'm from the Netherlands and I've heard of Jeffrey, but never ever have I heard he went to the U.S. to dominate the riders there. Boy was this nice to watch.
We just won the MXoN this year while Jeffrey Herlings was out due to injury - Tomac is faster than ever now and destroys the competition with his new team, engine package, and chassis/suspension set-up, however, Herlings spoke with Gypsy Tales about coming to race AMA in the future and I'm willing to bet that he'll either best everyone or just be a smidgen off! What makes him awesome too, is that he is VERY humble compared to almost 7 years ago, and wouldn't talk trash on any of the riders cause he knows they've progressed (especially for this past year while he was broken while Tomac was faster than ever), but still is so confident in his ability. I'm willing to wager that he shall win in the same fashion, and there is rumors of a Tomac VS. Herlings ONLY race that Gypsy started and they both have agreed to make it happen. :) RESPECT for the Flying Dutchman, and for all of the riders from the sandy Netherlands! Deep sugar sand makes a man out of you, and every rider from your country is a BEAST because of it - what I love about dirt biking is it is a sport that unites all people for the love of man, mind, and machine! The engineering of such machines are utterly amazing - just look at the JCR & SLR Honda teams that take and build a factory Honda CRF450X and BEAT million dollar trophy trucks in the Baja 1000! -It's incredible what these machines do!!!!
The production level on this is genuinely so much higher than anything I've seen from NBC or peacocks coverage of the sport. Seriously you deserve everything you have worked for. Your content is criminally underrated.
So good was only going to blow through it, ended up watching start to Finish, would be awesome if one of them went and competed in the opposite series just for a change, that would be top 🎖
I’m ashamed to call myself an American and have this incredible ride thrown asunder. What Herlings did was extraordinary. The way he put so many riders in shame, especially after his comeback in the 2nd race. That was a phenomenal ride, and the shame is everyone acted as if it had never happened. WTF were those fans thinking, not even acknowledging what Herlings did to come back after that crash? All the noise they made for Tomac, and they couldn’t take one fucking second to acknowledge Herling’s win. That’s fucking shameful.
buddy u just peeked into what the reality is about america, think of anything bad, ever invented and americas name will be up there. every single women's fashion(getting naked, porn and what not) is started from america too. literally the devils face is america
It's US cultural competitiveness, it's all about winning from a young age. A bad side effect is that when losing... the denial and excuses start. Most of the world is used to it by now.
And that right after flying over, meaning timezone switch as well. And somewhat different climate, food ingredients and stuff like that, which doesn't affect you hugely, but when youre competing at the top level at any sport, those little bits count What a mad lad
@@silbernersurfer8264 didn't you noticed at the podium. no handshakes, no handclappings , not even a eye contact. It says alot about, 1 the lack of IQ and respect. 2 No talent in the field. American citizens 332 million. Dutch citizens 17 million. 332 million and not one good rider. That's why they invented their own sports like, American football, Nascar, basketball. So they have something to shine in.
His interview at 28:00 was golden.... He just said in between the lines.... The tracks in Europe are way narrower and way more competitive he was just used to more track difficulties... Thats why he smashed it. If you try to battle the mount everest on a daily and then go climbing in Colorado seems like a walk in the park... I'm exaggerating but you get my point.
Was a one hit wonder and too wuss to come back and try again. He made this video after Tomac went and smacked them at MXON 2022 and Herlings was too scared to show up. What’s new
I keep coming back to watch this. Third time and I keep appreciating the story, the music, the images and the words, very well paced, full of insight and that touch of irony. A masterpiece.

One of the most opressed countries in the western sphere, with most inmates, most gun violence, most expensive medical system (which requires people to actually pay for it as well), and also legalized bribery in politics. It's an US national past time to bragging about things that are not facts.
Watching Herlings’ performance was amazing, seeing the public’s reaction was fucking embarrassing. They were talking shit as they were getting shit on 💀💀
the worst thing is, it's the default US crowd reaction... you can watch 10 other sports and they just cant handle it. watch serena williams vs naomi osaka, worst ever.
@KermitTheFrag let's not get too universal, most Americans I know would love to clock those fools all the same, unfortunately we've got enough cuck laws for both our locale, so shame shame
Major Respect to Herlings and for sure Sowman! Having served as AMA Sports Manager for several year, there's so much to say on how I see our American "Pro" riders take so much for granted. This young man was simply grateful for an opportunity to compete against our best here in the states. What I see our riders complain about, he praised. It spoke volumes.
As a Dutchie, I remember the results and was proud of it but never saw it as a humiliation or anything negative. It was just great to see people at the top of their game, from different competitions, competing.
That's probably since we Europeans have been trained from birth not to recognize our own humiliation. Just look how far we have degenerated, look how much absolutely disgusting crap we tolerate, drugs, promiscuous sex, all kinds of debauchery, the ethnic replacement of our peoples and the dismantling of our homelands. We need to wake the fuck up and start fighting back or we will go completely extinct within a few generations. The evil international financial empire, is eating us alive and most people are completely apathetic towards our own humiliation and annihilation.
It was quite negative for them, American fans of all sports are very insular, they consider being the best in America equal to being the best in the world. A lot of fans as he said didn't know who the guy was or think he was capable of beating the best in America, Americans believe that about all sports. Arrogance leads to humiliation, especially since this wasn't exactly the same bike or style this guy was used to.
@@goldytwatus1674 it was just all of it together. He also broke the record on one of americas best training facilities. Dungee and a lot more did train there.
I was at that race. Obviously the anticipation of seeing Herlings race was quite the buzz. Sitting on the hill side and watching him reel in the leaders with surgical precision in every section was awe inspiring. Ironman is not a polite track and to be able to beat not only the competition but also the track was quite a statement.
@@aspunkyyacker6850 Dude, what is wrong with you? Guy never said anything negative about Herlings and you came up with this moronic question like some 12 years old troll. Only hostile person here is you. Grow up.
@@aspunkyyacker6850 Not at all. I was stoked to be able to say I say that second moto. Then again being at the 2018 MXoN when him and Glen Coldenhoff swept the weekend in the mud was amazing. Seeing those euro guys ride is something special. Here in the US we all try to imitate the likes of Chase Sexton or Jett Lawrence in our riding but we should really open our eyes to the styles of the Europe guys as well because there is something to be learned from their riding as well.
Jet is good because he raced in Europe while he was developing. For some reason Americans won’t go and test themselves against better riders. Iron sharpens iron.
Man, Herling seems like a really nice guy. All the provoking questions and he basically only gave in once, firmly standing on the "here for myself, not any rivalry" ground for the most of it. Very positive vibes. Also, the video is phenomenal; engaging, interesting, very well edited. Great job. I understood everything from start to finish, even though I have no experience with the sport.
He's a good guy, he was on the gypsy tales podcast and said he'd love to do a 1v1 with tomac at lommel or southwick to see who's the baddest man. He said he knows this wasn't a fair matchup between them cause he had nothing to lose and tomac was in a championship fight
It's a shame that the some Americans can't simply respect talent no matter where it comes from. Many of them don't realize that there is a big world out there with a an awful lot of talented people in it.
When you spend your whole life being "educated" that "you are #1", it's easycto be a thirld-worlder with a big ego, living in the lie you're constantly told.
Never been particularly interested in motorcross, don't even know why youtube would have recommended me this or why I ended up watching it. Your excellent writing and storytelling made every minute of this greatly enjoyable and informative. I even found myself genuinely disappointed that not only did you not cover the next race teased at the end, but there isn't a part 2 either. Will you be be completing this story? What happened at the next event? I'm sure I could find out on my own, but I'd really rather hear you tell the story.
SPOILER: Eli competes in the US weekend obviously, the first day he beats all competition by over 28 seconds, Jeffrey seemed to have issues in the start and once again crawled his way up if I recall correctly. On the second day Eli was shocked at the pace set from the get go by all and wasn't at his fastest (possibly because he is used to only racing once a weekend). Jeffrey sets a blitz win overtaking on the last few laps due to his power of pressure!
'...Never been particularly interested in motorcross, don't even know why youtube would have recommended me this or why I ended up watching it. ..' me too, but now I want to know - I cant find the result of the next race either
yeap, same.... waiting for next "episode". And unfortunately, I'm not surpriced about the reactions from the fans, and undermining of the reporters in hindsight.
Just in case you’re wondering, that next race in Jacksonville was worth the hype. Tomac won the 1st race with Herlings finishing in 2nd. Herlings won the 2nd race with Tomac finishing 3rd, giving Herlings the overall title for the event.
I was there, i lived in Jacksonville for sometime taking my son to the track, we’ve lived between there and spain, and I can say with certainty, the European races are much tougher compared to America for the younger racers, but it eventually evens out. I have been a motocross mom in both America and Europe and there’s definitely a difference in competition and mindset. I notice Americans have more grit and endurance, i had a fellow motocross mom American who was also a military wife stationed in Spain at the time. She has similar views for differences, at least in younger riders. Her son started racing in Japan.
As an American, I love this race. I also love Herlings. Just an absolute beast! We need more of this competition from riders all over the world. If any Americans are hating on him, it's because they don't understand the sport and have 0 respect or class. Hat's of to him. What an accomplishment and how cool it was to watch him race AMA!
Competition spawns innovation. I've seen in other sports how American competitors who only practice and compete against other Americans get stumped by European competitors because they were missing out on so many things that gave the Europeans an edge. As soon as those same competitors started regularly competing and practicing internationally, suddenly they were pretty even.
when america and europe meet in a battle of skill.... EU usually win. americans THINK they are good at stuff cos all they do is compete in sports against the best from america alone, football, basketball, baseball ect. we compete against the best from nations all over the rest of the world. pick a sport that the entire world plays, and USA usually middle of the pack, at best
@CantOutRunADuck olympics arnt real sports. they are hobbies. also, you cant be pro at them, its a rule. they are literally hobbies. i mean actual sports... although they are starting to add actual sports now. but olympics are largely physical events, not skill based.
@@cantoutrunaduck2697 You pump the most money into it. In Germany for an example, people which compete in the Olympics are usually full time workers. Besides of Football and some other Sports, you ain't able to live from it. The guys which compete in the marathon/sprinting stuff gettin' a thousand bucks as compensations from the State. Because we take the whole Olympic gist about "Amateurs" more serious. In the USA, y'all pump more money in it as marketing tool against Russia and China; which are also countries which ignore the "Amateur"-Rule on a daily base. That's the reason. Yet, Europe has 1,2 Billion People, the USA has 300 - Statistically we are just more likely to produce top athletes. Which you see in Football, most Motorsports and every other present sport. Even in Basketball one German was relativly - yet not absolutly - dominant in the USA, despite the fact that Basketball is here like ... Most people don't even know the rules of it.
As a Dutch guy I knew about Herlings’ performances in MXGP. I never knew about this dominating performance though. What an epic mini-documentary you’ve made. Hats off to you sir!
Fantastic narration and storytelling. Ash, I hope your career as a video producer has skyrocketed - this is one of the best sports presentations I've ever seen! Great editing too. Helmet off to JH, he really took it to the Americans. The sequel was equally impressive.
Appreciate that mate! Got a new one coming up soon about a New Zealand race, I actually think it might be my best work to date. Looking forward to hearing what you think!
youtube just randomly recommended this video to me. Never watched motorcross, never been involved but this video got me pumped. I watched the entire thing and even when I knew nothing your writing and cinematography conveyed everything crystal clear. Really cool that my home country got some representation too! Awesome video, keep it up, you got yourself a new subscriber. Also judging from some of the comments, I'm not the only one!
YES! I've only watched a few F1 and Rally videos on youtube and when this popped into the feed I said, ok, why not. The story is epic into itself, but the storytelling counts just as much, and Ash Sowman does a fantastic job at it.
@@sleepyearth "No one wants you here go back to racing slow retards in the third world." - Some commenter (very presumably American) So much for southern hospitality eh? I've never watched a single video about motorcross, nor have I ever watched the sport or even ridden a motorbike. Yet for some bizarre reason, UA-cam recommended this to me. And I am glad it did. Honestly, this is quite incredible stuff here. To make a video and present a story in such an enthralling way that I care about the people involved, despite having no interest in MX, is incredible. Your editing style, video writing and voice are all phenomenal for creating interesting videos. Nice job!
It's amazing how some of the world's best crashed in their attempts to simply keep up with him. It's also cool to see the mental strength of Herlings, keeping himself from feeling pressured to push his luck whenever someone was breathing in his neck. Instead, he just kept his calm and kept it consistent.
If American MX fans won't talk or remember about this great feat, you have hands down made sure it will be remembered. 1+ million witnesses of a great feat by Herlings.
We talk about it all the time and Everyone knew herlings was the fastest guy outdoors. The title is click bait. The author leaves out a lot about the differences in the sport between america and the mxgp series. The americans run two separate series, meanwhile the mxgp guys run purely outdoor motocross. In america The money sponsors and riders are concerned about is in supercross which is raced typically in stadiums. In the last four weeks of any given motocross season, riders and team actually start testing bike setups for supercross and spend less time practicing outdoors. Its also the end of the season and Tomac had the title clinched so there was no need to go for the win and keep up with herlings. This mentality is also one of the reasons why herlings has been injured repeatedly and will underachieve in his career when he is probably the most talented guy on the planet.
@@taylort123 Quite critical but fair. Thank you kind sir. Although a win is a win and whether Tomac wanted to keep up or not he couldn't... not in this race at least.
As an American motocross rider, I can honestly say that I have nothing but the utmost respect for the European MXGP series. Motocross is big in the USA but unfortunately it's been surpassed by supercross. While I do enjoy supercross for what it is, there's no comparison the the brilliance that is out door motocross! Much love to Europe & the USA coming together for the love of motocross! ✌️
I grew up in the era of two strokes and "traditional" outdoor Motocross, I remember when stadium cross came in, as you say , it's good but not the ideal use of these bikes as I saw here, I'm sure it was a bit of a wake up call to some, really enjoyed that video, greetings from 🏴
I sometimes watch nascar on eurosport , just because the violence on track in the nascar series is like th3 best in the world no orher sport allows drivers the battle it out like they do in nascar wich is dangerous as hell but admireble ... the only thing that comes close in europe were cars make some good contact in gt3 racing but they still have more tules then nascar ... in nascar you still get away with some shit in gt3 and f1 there is more clean driving wich actually can make it a bit boring at times
Superb documentary. Herlings actually got a royal knighthood in his home country. It is basically a recognition of his achievements and his role as an ambassador of sports for the Netherlands. MX is not a big sport in NL but we do recognise a TOP athlete if we see him (or her). Amazing talent. He is always extremely dedicated, focused, physically fit and well prepared.
im Dutch and literally never heard of this guy or had any knowledge that the Netherlands was in any way internationally involved with mx. Now ill watch out for it though
Man I dont even follow this and dont know how i got recommended it, but i was hooked from the start. You captured an intensity in this mini documentary that was so satisfying. Not only was I entertained but i also learned something. Top marks man, this was epic.
I'm from the US, and I think you're right: this was one of the greatest rides MX has ever seen. Even since then, Herlings has shown he's a machine on the bike. Incredible racer.
@@de4ds1ghtcsgo94 I never got to see Carmichael, Stewart in their prime. Would have been a trip. But I have seen Herlings win an MXGP with a broken foot.
To achieve that, especially considering he had just 1 day to adapt to and set up that bike, and new surroundings/event for him, it was legendary. The people trying to undermine, boo or ignore this feat are basically bashing the AMA. Also, great production on the video, top notch.
To put this into perspective, the only other time I can think of when a European motorsports legend showed up and cleaned house in an American series was when Sebastien Loeb _stomped_ the 2012 X Games Rallycross championship, besting the top US rally talent like Ken Block & Travis Pastrana. However, unlike Herlings who was on an entirely new bike, the Rallycross DS3 Citroen was very much the same car that Loeb had been running in the WRC; albeit with an engine beefed up to 600 HP instead of 300 and the lights & co-drivers seat removed.
@@espe1317 That's a great catch to remember that too. But I will give half of that to the Audi engineers for developing that car. Because it really was a bit above the competing machinery with its awd drivetrain.
To be honest, it's not that surprising. The us has what, around 330M people (most of which who can't ever afford to compete anyway?) Vs even the EU where you have almost 500M people (and less inequality and several hundred million more people around EU itself)
Very occasionally UA-cam throws you a recommendation from leftfield that ends up being one of the best videos you've ever seen. You have a great talent for putting together a documentary and capturing the imagination of viewers who have little or no interest in the subject. Well done man, incredible video.
Right! I was reluctant to watch this video at first, but UA-cam was persistent with recommending this video, it kept showing up for a month until I finally watched it.
As a Brit - fucking get in Herlings! I won’t lie, any time a European sportsman or athlete visits the US and shows them up, I’m all about it. The US generates some of the best sporting performances of all time and good on them for that. But with it comes more than a little ego and arrogance. Sometimes we gotta knock em down a peg or two and just remind them - you aren’t the only elite players in the game :)
Mate I know you're into MX as a channel, but with your editing and storytelling abilities, a series breaking down different rivalries/races in different motorsports series in this style would do insanely well. Just food for thought :) I'm not a MX fan but I found myself totally engrossed in this, really bloody well done man.
This was great. I very much enjoyed the commentary, and the very clear and concise explanation of the sport and the play by play. You managed to make a sport interesting for a non-sport enjoyer! I keep on going back to 21:45. What a badass. I'm definitely never going to forget this.
The Jedi mind trick was gold. That was a great story and it's quite sad that the 2nd race didn't show nearly as much of Herlings as it should have. He was pretty much passing the entire field like they were standing still.
such fragile egos that they wanted to sweep herlings under the rug and pretend like nothing happened but you really can't ignore him if he takes the top spot lol
@@shepherdrm8486 That's exactly why did they don't grow, in Europe you have to compete against athletes from other countries, cultures, upbringings and mindsets which teaches you a lot of out of the box thinking. It's one of Europe's strongest feats.

I remember watching this live, and wondering just who Jeffrey Herlings was, and how on earth a guy with a 3 digit plate was simply walking the entirety of the AMA field almost effortlessly. I won't speak for others, but ever since that day I've been hopeful that Jeffrey would take a legitimate full-season crack at the AMA Motocross series. Let's be honest: competition breeds progress and innovation. If there's a person out there who is simply faster than everyone else, they deserve a shot at winning it all. It doesn't matter who it is, where they hail from or how they got there. I want Jeffrey to take on America. And if he wipes the floor with his competitors, then good. We're better off that way anyways. Don't elt the sport get stagnant. Bring in wildcards to spice things up and keep everyone on their toes. I’ll say it one more time. I am proud of you for creating this AMAZING documentary.I AM AMERICAN. I’ve been into motocross for 40 years. When I saw Herlings race in the US I was impressed. Got the chance to watch Herlings in person yesterday at the Spanish GP. Dude is on another level. In both motos he took a few laps to get comfortable then just seemed to decide that everything was good and that was it. Thank you and good night. A truly special talent.
Fourth time watching this documentary. One word, beautiful. Everything is great, the images and the commentary. Made by a sports enthusiast, who turned it into a realistic documentary. A big thanks
Well this American right here sees people as people so it does not matter to me what country someone calls home. Herlings was amazing in this race!!! A true champ wants to race against the best and win. I'm going to look Herlings up and watch some of his races as a result of this video. Love it!
I suspect that most people look at it that way. In the moment, I can see how some would get carried away with the whole Europe Vs NA aspect of it all. As a Brit, I would probably play in to that, but that's what Brits do. In my experience, it is something that is often misunderstood by our American friends. Brits make fun of Aussies, as much as Aussies make fun of us. We both make fun of ourselves, too. It's all friendly banter. Americans quite often take it as serious criticism.
Literally don't care about motocross at all, and you still had my full attention from start to finish. Absolutely smashed this in terms of audio quality, visual engagement, and overall narrative. I'd definitely give this a 10/10! Keep up the good work, and have a happy new year!
Great video. I'm Dutch living abroad, still follow Dutch news once in a while. It's not a big sport in Netherlands but media still reports Herlings' wins/injuries etc. Don't think the gen pop really cares. Watching this makes me realise his achievements are very extraordinary. Thanks for a great video and looking forward to the next!

Instantly hooked, you put together such a great video that I was hooked from the intro. I've never been interested in motocross before this video. Holy s***.
As a rower, everything made sense after the press conference. Coming from a team that specifically practiced in a rough water river, we were much better prepared for perfect conditions than teams that had it all the time. Worse track conditions always force technical skills that exploit better track conditions.
I always muddle it up in words, but when you race people who are slower you will win, but if you race people who are faster than you might not come first but you will have a new personal best. Another would be "no calm sea made a skilled sailor" which seems more appropriate to your comment.
I've been writing and producing TV shows for 30 years and this is some of the best content I've seen on any platform. Amazing job. Bravo and congrats. Keep it up!
I remember this race like it was yesterday. And I remember taking heavy flak at work amongst the moto guys for saying that we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss this Euro guy. I have always followed MXGP and I had an inkling that the days of American moto dominance was over. That race was the first of a few that, unfortunately, proved me correct. I love motocross and motocross racers, whether they be from Florida or Belgium, New Zealand or Russia, Cali or Sweden.

And when reminded, they *still* pretend they don't exist.
@@Ebbagull That's not exactly true for every American sport. Sure, it's true for American football but baseball and basketball both have a Canadian team each. NHL has several Canadian teams and America does very well in the Olympics against all countries. Indy car is fairly diverse with plenty of Europeans, Australians and Latin Americans. Unfortunately there are no Americans in F1 but that might change soon with the increasing popularity of that sport. Motorcross just seems to have a strange nationalistic culture around it that doesn't really translate to every American sport.

Ken block was a nice fun guy, but we can also remember his time in FIA WRX and WRC, he was not super fast, he had good control of 4wd cars but wasn't super fast.

@@JuChams Even before that in the 80's when Audi and Peugeot got there with rally cars ( 405/Quattro) american mocked them before they won the events several years in a row.
You have to remember despite it being a big country many Americans can be very parochial. In Europe all the top American road racers like Roberts, Schwantz, Rainey etc are held in very high regard, revered even. It's something that is rarely reciprocated in all the competitive events outside of a few where the top Americans have a similar level of respect. The saying "if you ain't American, you ain't shit" is very apt at times :)
There is a lot of great riders in Europe that never/rarely really touch the circuits like the GP and only do the road runs like the TT etc which i would say is a lot harder.
yeah thats absolutely true. there are definetely fans like american fans in europe as well but i feel like its not as many. i feel like european fans mostly just are fans of the sport and if someone comes and is good at it they will love them. Especially people like schwantz, rainey, roberts etc. Im from germany and was born in 1994 and my dad literally gave me kevin as a second name because hes such a big kevin schwantz fan. He also always gets his bikes painted in the traditional kenny roberts design (yellow with the black stripes with white borders) :D but yeah its probably not true for all american fans i dont like to put all people into one pot but theres definietely a big tendency to what youre saying. I mean just look at basketball. Germany kicked the USA out of the world cup this year and instead of acknowledging a great and hard game the germans fought and won against a great american team all you here the american fans say is excuses :D
Total respect for Cairoli and Stefan Everts as an American, Herlings is obviously very fast as well but not even close to the fastest l have ever seen. He also falls down a lot. Additionally in road racing Rossi is simply the best of all time and l live in Kenny Roberts home town. I do not think Americans dislike foreign riders but they judge them by speed and personality. Jett Lawrence is an Aussie and he is incredibly popular. Chad Reed was not as much but he was not as fan friendly. Pichon and Tortelli were popular but Bayle was not so much.
I wouldn't say he was _"taking it easy"_ in the first race as much as he was *_finding his riding legs._* Remember it was a new track, new frame, new engine, new setup, so although he was confident in his capabilities as a rider, he was less so in all the nuances I previously mentioned. By the second race however, he was on full tilt after being ridiculed by the haters and to top it off, he had a huge fumble during the first lap that if he left uncorrected, would be a perpetual mark against his name as a MX rider for the remainder of his life as people would doubt his abilities had he not pushed as though he was in the movie Crank.
I never saw this race as humiliating or embarrassing. Ive been a pretty big Herlings fan from early on, and was happy to see him come over and have a great weekend. I wish there was more crossover between AMA and MxGp.
@@aspunkyyacker6850 No everything is different over there some Americans have gone over there and have had trouble with food training and whatnot, I forget which ones had success. Last one I remember is Ryan Villopoto and he did talk about how different things were. same thing for the Euro's as they come over here they need to get used to things here training tracks to practice on ETC it all comes down to talent and determination. Just my opinion
I’m not a die hard motocross fan, but I am from the Netherlands and of course know Jeffrey Herlings and his accomplishments in motocross. Didn’t know about this epic race in the US though. Ash, you possibly made the best mini documentary I have ever seen on YT. Can’t wait to see part 2 of the race the same year in September in the US.
I think as a neutral mx fan in all this is that Herlings was 2 seconds faster in qualifying (and won both sessions) at a new track he has never raced at before (versus Tomac and other US riders who know the track well) and he did that on a borrowed bike. That 2 seconds faster is massive in itself. His comeback from last to win in the 2nd race is outstanding. It was Herlings first year on a 450 as well. The following weekend Herlings also won the USA GP with Tomac coming in 3rd. Tomac is without doubt a fast rider and one of the TOP riders in the world. But in my opinion Herlings is faster. However any of the top riders can win on the day. Thats what makes MX such a great sport. Many international racers have done well in the USA. Chad Reed, Roczen, Townely, Bayle and now the Lawrence Brothers to name just a few who went and raced in Europe before heading to the USA.
i'm not a AMA or mxgp fans..i'm just a casual gamer who like racing game..from my understanding..AMA is more like rhythm track (mostly in stadion) that has so many jump in every meters you ride , almost no fast part except at the starting grid..while mxgp is more like so fast phase outdoor circuit with huge jump and so many almost flat surface..and in this case the circuit is more like mxgp circuit.. so comparing these 2 will not be an apple to apple.. so my opinion is tomac will win if they race is a AMA (stadion track) and herlings will win if they race in this kinda track..isn't it?
@@reynoldtj1770 Close but not exactly. Both AMA and MX are rhythm based races. MX they have to really follow their lines and not make a single mistake, that also applies to AMA. Both these racers are incredibly fast. But herrings has more experience with fast pace rhythm then Tomac does. The amount of jumps is irrelevant considering both these racers have had so much experience with those type of tracks. Motocross racing is all about consistency and consistency is WAY more demanding in MX them AMA due to as you said being circuit like, longer, ect. You loose a little bit of speed in MX there's gonna be a big gap. While it's alot easier to catch back up In AMA.
@@Royal_Assassins but herlings have more experience with these kind of track i think..considering herlings compete in mxgp while tomac mostly race in stadium track..i would like to see they race in stadium track.. comparing these two same as comparing conor and floyd..conor really good with standup fight..but if they fight in boxing match, floyd will win..but in mma match conor will win..it's similar but totally diff..
@Reynold TJ Yeah I hear you but believe ot or not for these guys at least these jump rhythms are not very difficult to learn and get the hang of quickly, again herrings has probably practiced in a track similar to supercross. He'd be comfortable with the track by qualifying
Oh and I'm American and I have no hate towards herlings or any of our euro brothers coming and riding in America..and if they can beat us like herlings did I give them even more respect.. and I would tell my fellow American riders you better step your game up or your going to get embarrassed.. again.. congrats Herlings that was a absolute unbelievable ride my dude!!
I think a problem with a lot of US sports is that they only compete amongst themselves and then call it “the world title”. That’s just silly, they should compete more with other nations, iron sharpens iron, it almost seems like Americans are too scared to risk it and lose.
This is so beautifully done! As an American my perspective was this, I wasn’t mad, just more disappointed. There was no denying watching Herlings in the AMA that he was faster. I followed the GPs loosely, so I knew he was a top notch guy, but that race blew me away. Thanks for the content!
I watch mxgp but would watch ama if I was able to, better tracks more entertaining. If you don't race it doesn't matter who is fastest I'm watching for entertainment and americans are alot better at that.
Brilliantly put together documentary. Bottom line is, the European series is clearly not the “college motocross” version seen in the USA. For a rider to go from 2nd last to a win is just not possible at this level in Europe. Very kind of Herlings to help Tomac secure the championship. What a guy. How about a rematch with Tomac at a few European events?
I’m not even that into this sport, but was mesmerized up to the end. What a great tale, and great storytelling. Says a lot about human nature as well, for good and for worse. Keep on doing them like this my friend and you’ll get very far, I’m sure. Good work.
I've been out of the motocross scene for almost 40 years, so finding this well put together piece on a single event was extraordenary. Bloody well done! Now I have to see when happened the weekend after ...

So I needed a guy from downunder to unearth this heroic triumph. Herlings coach is none other than my compatriot, champion Joël Smets. One of the champions of my youth years, and up there with Rahier, Everts sr., Malherbe, Jobé, Geboers, Everts jr., ❤. Thank you very much for this fine history lesson! Herlings is on my radar now!
I saw Gaston Rahier in NZ back when I raced motocross, he was the rising star, but before him were Joel Robert and then Roger de Costa, they were all seen in the US as the best there was, despite all being Belgians. Naturally everywhere else they rode, they were absolute heroes... The parochialism was not always at the toxic levels we see today, and US was *much* better loved. Those Belgian boys, war babies (except for Rahier who was a couple of years younger) grew up under the Marshall Plan, which will probably always remain the high water mark of civilisation, the most extraordinary, noble, generous and effective gesture a nation has ever performed, it seems to me... It seems to me the empty US triumphalism became absolutely problematic during the GW Bush presidency, and it's been a steep downhill ride ever since.
It is indeed kept silent. I try to google on herlings vs Tomac and find nothing about this. Instead i find silly conversations about a challenge coming up now where people talk like this never happened. I almost started to believe this video was a faked story and it never did happen. Until i googled on the date and found the actual race results.
@@TheAxeter This is really part of American culture, you see it a shitload from history (especially if it's about war), to sports (having a 'World Championship" and "World Series" that only takes place in North America). I'm not sure what created that need to always be the winner or the best. But I must say I notice a shift coming lately. Many people realize they're not alone on this planet and they don't have to be 'the best' in everything. But this is mostly among younger generations (like the working class who realize how garbage their labor rights are compared to other countries).

It’s as I always tell my kids, you may have a favourite team or rider. But sportsmanship is important. If someone/team is really good making great plays. You give them the credit they deserve. You will never get better unless you have someone to push you and push you. Greatness only comes from adversity and adversaries.
If you don't the underdog to get on top, and the follower to overtake the leader, you're just playing favourites, you wan't your pick to be vindicated, you don't want a good match, you don't like the sport.
This was fantastic and really sums up Americas mainstream ideology. When they are presented with facts that they are not "correct, the best, the leader" they do not want to listen because it breaks fundamental aspects of that Ideology.
They spent their whole lifes hearibg "we're #1" and have no idea of the world besides "Mexico bad, Canada Weak!" ... What do you expect, in terms of actual intelligence?
I know nothing about motorsports. This video made me interested in learning more about motorsports because what Herling did is simply incredible and it's wild that the American motor media refuses to acknowledge Herling's accomplishments for what I can only imagine being national pride. Herling was essentially a random guy from across the pond and he came and destroyed them all. This truly is a masterpiece of a video.
This documentary is very misleading. Everyone in America knows exactly who Herlings is and many of us consider him to be the best motocross rider. When we heard he was coming here we were ecstatic and could not wait to watch him ride. He had dominated the European series for five years previous to this. This exact same scenario happened in 2022 when we thought he was coming to compete in our whole series and it would’ve been absolutely amazing but it didn’t work out. What the documentary leaves out is that Herlings has come here before and been beat by tomac. On this day Tomac had everything to lose and herlings had nothing to lose. How could you possibly compare somebody when they are in that mental state. With that being said if both of them had nothing to lose I still think herlings would’ve won that day because he was better Lastly what this documentary doesn’t mention is that MXGP riders only participate in motocross and focus on nothing else. American writers participate in Supercross for 70% of the season and only 30% is focused on motocross.
Don't think it was really that much about national pride more so a bunch of Americans have watched the same riders all year battling to win a championship so they are focused on that . Herlings went for a few races so there wasn't enough time for us to care really . Kinda like dang that European dude is sick wow, then u focus on the championship which is why your watching so that's why the crowd didn't care an media didn't care cause no one knew him really an he wasn't racing the series every round

RESPECT for the Flying Dutchman, and for all of the riders from the sandy Netherlands! Deep sugar sand makes a man out of you, and every rider from your country is a BEAST because of it - what I love about dirt biking is it is a sport that unites all people for the love of man, mind, and machine!

Here in the US we all try to imitate the likes of Chase Sexton or Jett Lawrence in our riding but we should really open our eyes to the styles of the Europe guys as well because there is something to be learned from their riding as well.

Just in case you’re wondering, that next race in Jacksonville was worth the hype. Tomac won the 1st race with Herlings finishing in 2nd. Herlings won the 2nd race with Tomac finishing 3rd, giving Herlings the overall title for the event.
He made another video about that !

We didn't respect him because he sand bagged for so long
when america and europe meet in a battle of skill....

Verstappen kinda ruined it for Herlings.
Same. Needed a US UA-camr to

I have never watched anything motocross related on UA-cam before, never.
Still somehow this video pops up on my recommended feed - I click it out of curiosity.
Reminds me of the Soccer finals in 54 Germany/Hungary. They only won thanks to the rain.
I always muddle it up in words, but when you race people who are slower you will win, but if you race people who are faster than you might not come first but you will have a new personal best. Another would be "no calm sea made a skilled sailor" which seems more appropriate to your comment.

I think people obsess to much over their country being the best.
@@MegaBanne The difference is that other countries are very used to competing against other nations regularly, while Americans keep only competing against each other and pretending it's a competition of the best of the best, pretending other nations don't exist.

Looking at this, i can't help remembering Sebastien Loeb's venue at the X Games in 2012 : Every American was like "he will struggle against Ken Block and Tanner Foust", yet he destroyed them with so much ease. Europe better raise applauses for our european top drivers/riders !!
Well they should have known when Colin McRea flipped over his car and still almost won few years earlier..
Loeb's run on Pikes peak as well, when he smashed the record by 1mn.

RIP Ken Block
If it aint dutch, it aint much!
There is a lot of great riders in Europe that never/rarely really touch the circuits like the GP and only do the road runs like the TT etc which i would say is a lot harder.
I disagree. Roger DeCoster is highly regarded in the US , and he's not the only one. Karsmaker , Aberg and others are remembered fondly.
yeah thats absolutely true. there are definetely fans like american fans in europe as well but i feel like its not as many. i feel like european fans mostly just are fans of the sport and if someone comes and is good at it they will love them.
This is one of the most enjoyable videos on youtube. I have never watched motorcross, except for this video, about 5 times. Its so good.
The second race really shows how easy Herlings was taking it the first, he was never going to crash like Tomac did.
Well tormac came in like past the 20 spot in 2017. Not a real challenge for europe
okay then at minimal Biased, from the Home state camera coverage.
Do you think the American riders would stand a chance in Europe 🤷
@@aspunkyyacker6850 No everything is different over there some Americans have gone over there and have had trouble with food training and whatnot, I forget which ones had success. Was never into motorcross. But god do I love the stories that pride, ego, hard work and passion for a sport creates.
Especially the europeans Chad Reed, Townley and the Lawrence Brothers!
i'm not a AMA or mxgp fans..i'm just a casual gamer who like racing game..from my understanding..AMA is more like rhythm track (mostly in stadion) that has so many jump in every meters you ride , almost no fast part except at the starting grid..while mxgp is more like so fast phase outdoor circuit with huge jump and so many almost flat surface..and in this case the circuit is more like mxgp circuit..
so comparing these 2 will not be an apple to apple..
so my opinion is tomac will win if they race is a AMA (stadion track) and herlings will win if they race in this kinda track..isn't it?
Thank you for saving this historic sport event ! Put so nice together like a pro documentary. HT to you Ash.
This is so beautifully done! As an American my perspective was this, I wasn’t mad, just more disappointed. There was no denying watching Herlings in the AMA that he was faster. I followed the GPs loosely, so I knew he was a top notch guy, but that race blew me away. Thanks for the content!

Bottom line is, the European series is clearly not the “college motocross” version seen in the USA.
For a rider to go from 2nd last to a win is just not possible at this level in Europe.

As an American, i dont think we want anyone to forget this race 😂 was a phenomenal showing and i think it humbled a lot of us as well
So I needed a guy from downunder to unearth this heroic triumph.
Ash is from New Zealand not Australia, still a legend though 👌🏽
Oh I remember geboers never liked him as a kid only as am a brit and he was racing dave thope and Kurt nicols
Deluded americans will be able to recall all 3 times an american did OK on the world MX stage, and I don't pay 2 of them.
Not much into sports, but how have I never heard of this accomplishment by my fellow countryman? This is epic! And very well put together, excellent!
It is indeed kept silent. I try to google on herlings vs Tomac and find nothing about this.

Americans absolutely despise admitting they're not the best and this video is kind of a perfect example for one of those situations.
Basically it’s their Christian attitude.
even when they got beaten they still didn't accept it. When someone does something incredible even if your not a fan you still applaud them.

I never cared about motocross and I probably still won't in the future, but this was an amazing documentary and a great story.
Agreed simply Respect
With that being said if both of them had nothing to lose I still think herlings would’ve won that day because he was better
Lastly what this documentary doesn’t mention is that MXGP riders only participate in motocross and focus on nothing else.
