Worst vacuum ever! I have NEVER had a vacuum to cost so much and require so much maintenance to keep it running. I've owned just about every model and it's always the same insane amount of maintenance. I'm done with Dyson!
I was sucked in to buying one as well only two years of it and it is starting to have problems (regardless of my constant filter cleaning etc) such bull crap and waste of money 🤦♀️
Holy crap! I took apart the brush head today because my dyson wasn't moving the brush head at all. I noticed the mechanism was really hard to move so I figured there was hair there. Then I found your video showing how to take it apart, and THANK YOU SO MUCH! I WOULDNT HAVE EVER NOTICED THAT SCREW THERE. There was about 3x the amount of hair as you found in yours. You saved me from buying a new one, I bet at least $100. Thank you so much! Its working like new.
Mate, you are the best! Noone, including dyson has told me how to get that last black swirly thing off. They all just kept repeating the same cleaning instructions. Thanks to you, i have fixed it and the head now turns. Ill be able to sell my old dyson and not just chuck it away.
Excellent instructions. I really appreciate that you don't waste people's time with over explaining every little detail. This was easy to follow, and I DID find the little monster tuft under the spinner .. however after I put everything back together it STILL didn't spin very fast (it did spin though). Turns out the main issue was that my dog had torn some cardboard into little shreds that I had vacuumed up prior to this event and I thought I had cleared all the little pieces (the hose and head were clear). And suction seemed "okay". So I took off the hose right at the ball and there is a tiny slot where debris enters the ball that had a few very small pieces of cardboard trapped. Not enough to restrict the air but apparently enough to weaken it to the point that the turbine wouldn't spin very fast. I cleared that out and it runs like new now. Thank you very much for this great video.
After the first try, I bought star drive screwdrivers and successfully removed a massive, dense hair-donut from under the spindle. This is a brilliant video to help the consumer overcome a design flaw that should have been tweaked long ago. Thanks
Just amazing! I just fixed mine today and saved myself 150$. This made my day. The hardest part was finding a screwdriver like yours small enough to insert into the tubing. Thanks again!
Can’t tell you how many times I’ve googled how to fix something and you’ve helped me out. The final trick here did the job, just when I was about to send it for repairs. Super easy. Although, when I was half way through pulling out all the screws I realised my fingers were small enough to get in there without pulling it all apart. Saved me money, effort and worry. Thanks! 👍🏻
Hey! Thanks for your help! To anyone wondering about screw sizes, if you have this model, the canister big ball animal, it's a T10 for the 4 screws of the plastic plates and T8 for the one in the turbine spinner. Hope that helps!
Yes, good tip, I couldn't get a screwdriver that went into the spindle for the last screw so I took it into our local computer shop. They had the right screw driver and didn't even charge me. Thanks for your tip, now I know what to screw drivers to buy. 😊
Dude thank you! The part towards the end where you remove the piece that spins the roller solved my issue. So much hair removed and now it spins like new. So happy!
Great job. I purchased a new battery due to the brush not spinning and did not fix the issue. I searched and found this. It was a pain getting the final piece (i had to remove about 7-8 screws) but worth it. This one had twice as much hair behind it than you showed. Saved me having to either purchase the entire head or a new vacuum.
I tried to troubleshoot myself, then thought to google issues and DIY videos and stumbled on yours. Mine was in that final one where the hair circled around the screw in a place didn't even know existed without your video-how would anyone know without this video! I took it all a part and back together, with my fingers crossed- and that was it. You helped me fix and and save $ on a new Dyson. Thank you Thank you Thank you for this very thorough video and to place here so we can find you.
OMG I wish I had found this last year I purchased a new powerhead then when it stopped I knew it would be something simple. I'd always cleaned the roller brush but didn't know about that last trick. You're a life saver and great simple explanation!
Mine worked fine until I rinsed the head out. I took off the slotted end as you suggested, the inner axle spun no probelm. Brush head was clean, and spun fine - as long as I didn't secure the slotted cap back on fully. Then it would apply a braking effect - stopped everything.
Thanks for the awesome tutorial, it was indeed dryer fluff and hair jammed in the brush, fixed it in half a minute thanks to you! The turbine head retails for £60 here in the U.K., I’m so glad I watched your video.
Thank you so much . The final trick was the one that worked- I but hard getting the screw out of the twisty thing- but the screw star head was the same size as the other screws in the unit and only took 12 turns to remove it. You sir are a legend. The wife will be delighted and so will my bank balance! First class help.
Excellent advice, turned out not be as as simple as your video, really difficult to take apart, but would never have known what to do without this video, thank you very much, great video.
Super helpful. I am not a handy person but was able to get my Dyson working in less than 1.5 minutes (not counting watching your video). Thanks so much.
Very clear instructions no shortcuts and for the longest time I had been struggling to figure out why the brush would be so slow! I did not want to spend another $500 on a new one you saved me money thank you!
Amazing. Solved. Who would have known there was a screw inside that spindle. Took all the other screws out but that one. Massive help! Thanks! Also worth noting that mine still didn’t spin after reassembly, just gave the roller a little nudge and it started spinning freely again.
I did the same thing! I had a bunch of screws out .. so many more than were necessary ... and I could not figure out how to get that spinner off. That little hidden screw, I would never have figured it out on my own.
I had to go to the final step to solve the problem--Thank you! I have 3 daughters and there was quite a twirl of hair that prohibited the head roller from spinning. Thanks so much for showing me how to get to that final piece. You helped me save our vacuum!
Over the past few weeks, the brush bar was turning less and less. Figured there was something under the spindle, blocking its rotation but didn't know how to access it. Your video showing that there's a screw inside the shaft of the spindle is the information I needed. Thanks!
Thank you very much for a great video. It gave me confidence to tackle the task. No hair blockage, just the belt not turning. Eased, a spot of silicon and running as smooth as ever
Was on the verge of purchasing a new attachment coz it was not spinning anymore. Lucky I came across your video and did just that. Thank you so much! Now my vacuum is working great again! 😁
Hi Bill! Thanks for taking the time to put this online - and for explaining it so clearly. Even a non-DIYer like me was able to follow it. Tried all three tips, to no avail, before I realised some of the small bristles were folded over on themselves (at the back of the roller, of course) and that was what was preventing the roller from spinning. Snipped these and hey presto! Thanks again 👍
Awesome! I was going to pay to have this fixed but now only had to pay for a new screwdriver set (£5) and did it myself! Thanks! I also gave it a good clean up!
Worked perfectly, got an great tight washer or hair that was otherwise invisible without taking off that last screw. The roller was spinning freely by hand after but still wouldn't spin when switched on. Gave the whole dyson a good blast with the leaf blower inside and out(especially the build up of fluff around the drum) and is now running at warp speed!
The ball of hair at the beginning of this video and where it was hiding was the exact problem with my Dyson V6 slim vacuum. Thank you so much for posting!
Thank you so much! I got the same black ball of hair. I have checked everywhere and thought it was broken. You saved my money ! BUT I am done with Dyson! Expensive and requires too much care! Never again!
Dude, THANK YOU SO MUCH. We've had a broken vacuum for months and it turns out that all it needed was some canned air to the electrical attachment point!
You are a genius!!! The head of my stick vacuum has stopped spinning months ago; I have resorted to sweeping them vacuuming my puddles of dust, dirt and hair. It took me a little time to take the head apart but it works like new now. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for your video, I followed your instructions and it worked. I'm so proud of myself, I've never tried to do anything like this before, I took the whole head apart and fixed the problem xxx
I literally took the whole thing apart and scratching my head because I couldnt spot any issue. And then I found your video! Thank you soooo much for posting this otherwise I'll have to spend and get a new one!!!
Wow thank you! U had that hidden hit of hair on the very inside - I had no idea that was even a place to look! The hair was melted/fused together! I was 2 minutes away from buying a new vacuum so THANK you! I didn't have same model as you but your instructions were easy to understand with my model!
Thank you so much for this video!! It was the 3rd one I watched in a desperate attempt to fix my V6 and you were the only one to suggest that final trick when I was ready to give up, totally appreciate you filming and uploading such a helpful demonstration :-)
You are my hero of 2020. I pulled the motor head apart yesterday to no avail. That one little screw to take the spinny mechanism apart was the trick. Thank you!!!
Worked a treat. I had tried everything and had even bought a new battery pack. Such a helpful video. Clear and simple instructions. Problem solved and saved myself from having to buy a new vacuum cleaner. Thanks so much 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Spot on video, saved me a replacement Dyson head costing £65!, turns out my issue was the hair stuck behind the spindle, in the head, when I tried using the Vac it would spin for a few seconds then stop, but following the step by step guide I was able to dismantle the unit get the spindle out and find a massive wound up piece of hair which was causing the problem, removed that and I cannot believe how good the vacuum is now and as stated in the video unless you remove the spindle you will never know how much hair is behind there, I would say if even you don't have problems but had the machine for a while you should look at the spindle and clear it out to save your motor burning out and improve the performance of the machine.
Thanks so much man. Learned a few things just now. I'm always cleaning out our Dyson, but didn't know how much there was to know until your vid. Much appreciated.
Hi. I just wanted to add another thank you to the long list of thank yous. Your video saved me money on repair and/or replacement costs! I wish you all the best.
Thank you so much! with Quarantine I've been cleaning even more than usual and when my V6 stopped working I was so bummed that I'd have to replace it, I was able to get it taken apart and fixed up and now it works like new!
I was having the same issue with mine, and even after I cleaned the entire roll I wouldn't have ever know that one could actually remove the roller base and that hair would be stocked in there. I'll clean it again. I was so bummed out the roll would not spin as it should after I cleaned it thoroughly, but I'm sure this will do the trick. Thanks for posting!!
Thanks - fixed my Dyson following these instructions for the torque head. Had a tough time getting that last screw out - had to go to the hardware store and get the correct torque head to get it out. But once I got the hair out from behind - everything works!
Thanks Bill, great vid but I had to go a little bit further to solve the same problem. I removed the 3 T9 torx screws on the transmission just above the electric motor and found that the tiny nylon cog on top of the motor was a bit worse for wear (not terrible). I was easily able to flip it over and hey presto, it’s like a new machine! The problems that I was also having with intermittent stop / start issues that I thought were related to the switch suddenly disappeared too! I’m thinking there may be some kind of overload switch that would turn off the unit to prevent damage to the jammed brush motor.
I was about to order a new turbinehead because no cleaning fixed my problem. But after watching this no-nonsense video, I am $170 ahead. Thank you, Bill!
WOW! I was ready to give up on my Dyson and figured it was a replacement I needed. But no, I just needed THIS video. Bought myself a set of torx bits and dismantled the head and voila, you were right, it was the years of hair stopping the brush turning! I’m so bloody relieved I don’t need to throw the thing out. Thank you!!!!!
Amazing!!! Used it on my old dc35 and she's finally spinning again!! There was so much hair wrapped tight in there i thought it was a rubber washer! Dyson should be paying u!!
Thanks a million! I thought I'd tried everything but turns out the wad of pet hair behind the spindle thing in the third step was the one thing I hadn't tried. Now the dyson is working like new again. Thanks for taking the time to create this tutorial.
Solved the issue on my V6. Thank you. Never knew that centre part of the roller came out - loads oh hair behind it. Took a few presses of the trigger after cleaning but works perfectly now.
Thanks Bill great fix! I had to cut my Wife and daughters hair off in their sleep to minimise this issue occurring in the future. They were upset in the morning and I've explained why but they still are a little annoyed.
You saved me a lot of money with your excellent tutorial. I went to Home Depot, got a torx folding Allen wrench set, and got that hair out of my vacuum head. Thank you!
I definitely had the problem with drive pulley jammed with fibres at the bearing; thankfully your tip at 7:00 showed me how to disassemble & clear it out. Back in business! Thanks so much!
FYI for future readers - in some Dysons it requires a T8 screwdriver. Once you get that out, you can get behind the motor like shown in the video and can get the hair out. Add lubricant to the area and use a QTip to clean. I saved $500 on having to buy a new vacuum with this fix. Thanks OP
You, Sir, are a genius!! Last time it was emptied, and the dust reservoir removed, some fluff got in and was over the contacts!! Thank you so much, you saved me a repair bill!!
Legend! Thanks so much, did all the other steps but it still kept stopping and starting. Didn't even think to check there was a screw there. Thanks so much 😊
GOOD REPAIR VIDEO !!! Just a tip for everyone... The screw holding the drive wheel on is a Torx #8 as apposed to every other Torx screw on the Dyson which is a #10....
Thanks so much for this, I was becoming very frustrated with the screws, ended up one side was small Philips head, other side was Torx 10 and the very tricky little wheel was as you said a Torx 8, which I had to go to Bunnings to buy ! But it's now working, so very appreciative of this helpful site and your contribution !
Thank you for the easy to follow video, my dyson brush head wouldn't spin and there was a massive clump of hair wound up under the spindle which was not visible. It works like a champ now! 🌻🌻🌻
The problem with my Dyson vacuum was a bit different. When the vacuum was turned on, the head roller would spin for 3-5 seconds and then stop. Turn vacuum off/on, and again roll would spin for 3-5 seconds and stop. It was as if there was not enough suction --- same as if washable filter was clogged. Since I had recently cleaned the washable filter and emptied the canister I knew they weren't the causes. So your video inspired me to disassemble the head roller. Without your video I would not of thought of removing the end "gear" that the roller slides into. When I removed the end "gear", I found a very small amount of hair (not the ball of hair you found). I thought that could not have been the problem .... but when I reassembled the head roller and turned on the vacuum the head roller spun !!! THANKS.
Thank you! thank you! thank you! you just saved me about $100 from having to buy a couple of new Attachments for my Dyson vacuum. I really can’t thank you enough for helping me save that kind of money
Thank you. I had watched your video before so I knew how to clean the head on my V8 stick, but it still wasn’t spinning. Watching this again encouraged me to go back in and check for hair. Sure enough, after the 2nd cleaning, it works again! Thank you so much.
Thanks for taking the time to explain everything step by step and leave nothing unanswered. I was only looking to service my head as it was still in good working order but I watched your video from start to finish...
Wow you are a genius and made it look so easy to do. It was full of hair around that spindle but you couldn’t see it till you opened it. It’s working perfectly now. Thank you so much. Di
thanku so much i bought new one 1 month ago and suddenly the spinner it stopped working i was worried so much luckily i saw ur video and i cant tell u u saved my half of my life thanks alot 🎉
5:32 Exactly what was preventing my roller from spinning (completely filled with gunk / hair at bottom). Note that for the V11 only the cover of the brush comes out but still gives you access to clean. Awesome video!!! Thank you
This only solved part of my problem! I had to go in deeper to the turbine where I found a massive dust blockage --I thought it was a freaking filter! Once I got that out put it all back in place it worked as good as new! I couldn't have done it without your help! You saved me about $90 bucks, you should put a kudo$ button or link!
thanks for the tips! I actually had a small piece of sand or debris that was stuck on my belt that was causing a hiccup not allowing the turbine to run at its full potential. Saved me 60$!! thanks again!!!
Thanks Bill. That last plastic cover to remove before accessing the small motor had me stumped until I saw your video. My DC35 motor head wasn't spinning and I tracked it down to what I thought was a small white stone jammed in the toothed rubber belt drive. Then I found that it was in fact a jammed belt tensioner (the belt drive compartment only being attached by one pin allowing a pivoting action was the clue). A bit of pencil graphite placed into the tensioner inspection hole, a few pushes on the tensioner and she was good as new. Thanks again Bill; a nicely paced, non-condescending, informative video.

Just saved me $200! I didnt know that rotating piece came out!!
You’re welcome 👍
Thank you so much for putting this video out, I was really struggling with my Dyson, finally sorted it out
Glad I could help 👍
Amazing!!! Used it on my old dc35 and she's finally spinning again!! There was so much hair wrapped tight in there i thought it was a rubber washer! Dyson should be paying u!!
You are a gem! The last tip was what did it. For the price of a cheap set of Amazon torx screwdrivers, we're back in business 🎉
My DC59's issue was the two electrical connectors tucked way up in the main unit housing. Cleared them of fluff and all good
Can you be a bit more specific? Thanks
Thank you man! I was wondering why the brush stopped spinning after I cleaning the vacuum and now I got it thanks to you!
Thank you!
Bloody great video mate. Never knew how to get that far. Fixed it perfectly.
I definitely had the problem with drive pulley jammed with fibres at the bearing; thankfully your tip at 7:00 showed me how to disassemble & clear it out. Back in business! Thanks so much!
I never realized there was a screw inside the twisty thing, thanks
FYI for future readers - in some Dysons it requires a T8 screwdriver. Once you get that out, you can get behind the motor like shown in the video and can get the hair out. Add lubricant to the area and use a QTip to clean.
I saved $500 on having to buy a new vacuum with this fix.
Thanks OP
Thank you for the nice walkthrough. Got a Dysan hand-down due to them not knowing this. Easy fix with patience!
Thanks Bill! I was wondering how to pry out that little part!
Virtual high five to you sir! Worked like a charm. GF was ready to drop a few hundred bucks on a new vacuum but this video saved the day!
You, Sir, are a genius!! Last time it was emptied, and the dust reservoir removed, some fluff got in and was over the contacts!! Thank you so much, you saved me a repair bill!!
I finally found the issue with my vacuum. Thanks Bill. My issue was the hair at the end behind the spinny head
Cheers Bill, why Dyson can't stick with regular Philips screws is anyone's guess.
Because it would be an easy fix
Phillips screws can "cam-out" and prevent you from applying the correct/consistent torque. Thus the use of Torx, Square/Robertson, etc
Amazing instructions. Explaining how to remove the spindle on the motor allowed me to clean my mum’s vacuum.
Jeez, you could make a toupee with that amount of buildup!

Wow, thank you!!!!! Worked. I did it myself, and found your video, clear, well paced and knowledgeable. Again, thanks, I was SO frustrated.
Thank you
You have literally just saved me the cost of a new cordless head with your last tip on this video, thank you so much
You’re welcome 👍
