    I have the eye coach which I got used for a great price. I see the top spin pro also used and tempted to buy it.
    I like that you explained you are trying to learn with your left hand.
    I have problem with keeping my eye on the ball and also been working on a more consistent top spin. Thanks for this video.
    I have to admit I have yet to use my eye coach and I have had it for 6 months!

    Thank you Lisa for the video. Looks like Eye Coach is a better fit for me. I am 4.0 with a big flat forehand. it is clear to me that my goal is to improve my overall game. Changing to a different grip in order to have a topspin, I am afraid actually it will ruin my game. To the most, I don't think I am pursuing a career in tennis. LOL

    The Topspin Pro also makes you look at the ball at contact so you don't hit the wings- take a look at any Federer shot to see how stares the ball down at contact. Also not hitting through the ball like a baseball bat (which would knock the TSP over) gives you an immediate feedback of what topspin is all about.

    • @LanceJordan
      @LanceJordan 4 роки тому

      I'm sure the TSP will help with learning the feel of topspin, but if you wanna talk about Roger swing path look at this slow motion video. ua-cam.com/video/PMyqDCj8RLI/v-deo.html You can see just how long the racquet continues FORWARD THROUGH the shot long after the ball is gone and continues fully out to the target. This crazy idea of "brushing" the ball may help some people but I bet it hurts a lot more club level players in the long run unless they learn the need drive through swing.

      @@LanceJordan The clip you shared is a return of serve not a forehand groundstroke. Here's a deconstruction of Roger's forehand groundstroke (from the same session I think based on the t-shirt!) that explains that HITTING THROUGH is really the really the crazy idea :-) playmoderntennis.com/blog/?the-roger-federer-forehand-de-constructed I know there are 2 schools of thought on this out there. Well, it’s comparing apples and oranges, really.
    The topspin pro teaches you how to create topspin.
    And it’s excellent in achieving that.
    The eye coach, when used properly develops perfect timing and spacing, and crucially the integration of footwork and movement skills with your technique.
    The eye coach can train:
    Topspin
    Slice
    Drive
    Fh
    Bh
    Volley
    Drop shot
    With the aforementioned fundamentals

      I think the 2 inventors see their products as "competitors" so very unlikely that these 2 patented items will combine to be one product. Also, the swing arm timing feature of the Eye Coach would be really difficult to combine with heavy spin of the ball. The ball in a fixed position on the TSPro makes it really easy to produce and repeat the feeling of what topspin is. I suppose it is conceptually doable but the simplicity of each product is the beauty of the whole concept

    Hey, thanks for the video! I think I heard you say something that I haven't come across in any of the literature I've read/videos I've watched (I've done quite a bit in the three days it took from ordering my Topspin Pro to its arrival today!) and I was wondering if you could confirm that I understood correctly: the goal with the Topspin Pro is to hit and spin the ball WITHOUT moving it from its position? I've been hitting it and getting quite a bit of movement. I really want to make sure I'm learning the best technique I can, so I really appreciate you taking the time to not only make this video but answer questions on it, as well.

    • @TopspinPro
      @TopspinPro 4 роки тому +4

      Hi Trintatoo - Phil here, I invented the TopspinPro. The objective is more to spin the ball without touching the screens and less about it moving around. To make it portable we couldn't make it too heavy. So it does actually move a little. Please get in touch via love-all@topspinpro.com if there is anything else we can help with.

    • @TheTotalServe
      @TheTotalServe  4 роки тому +3

      I'm so sorry for the long delay. I don't know how I missed this. There will always be some recoil of the ball arm mechanism. the lighter touch on the ball, the less it will move. consequently the less it moves the more upward and forward spin you are generating. If it's moving a lot then you are on the flatter end of things. if it's not moving much, you are getting more topspin

    • @TheTotalServe
      @TheTotalServe  Рік тому

      I'm sorry I didn't reply. The more the arm recoils, the flatter you are hitting the ball. I didn't mean to say that the arm will not move at all if you are doing it "right". Topspin is all relative to a shot and a situation. If the arm does not move much at all then you are hitting more topspin (more rotations of the ball) and it will have a much softer sound. If the arm is recoiling quite a bit then you are hitting less topspin (or a flatter ball). Flatter does not mean flat.
      Neither way is right or wrong
      Does that help?

    Been using an Eastern Forehand and hitting flat for 20 years. Now I want top spin and deciding whether to keep the Eastern grip and just modify the swing path to windshield wiper style. Or switch to SW grip straight away. Think I might start out Eastern and see the topspin result, if topspin is not good enough, then gradually move towards bevel 3.5 grip and then, if necessary, SW grip bevel 4.0... People say SW is superior for spin but don't see why an Eastern grip is inferior to SW grip for generating topspin at the 4.0 rec level.

    • @TheTotalServe
      @TheTotalServe  2 роки тому

      Hi I'm sorry I missed your message. I would skip trying with the eastern forehand. This is the easiest and cleanest way to get the correct angle of the racket face in the right position for topspin. Otherwise you end up twisting and turning your hand, elbow and arm. This will slow down the racket head, generate minimal spin and potentially cause elbow issues. Let me know if you need some help

    I have not tried the TopSpin Pro but for me, the Eye Trainer has been a massive help to my game. But I have always hit with a lot of topspin. In fact it took me years to learn how to drive through the ball and only since using the Eye Trainer for the past year have I developed much more variety on my shots but also a lot more consistency. I think the TopSpin Pro seems more like a one trick pony where as the Eye Trainer allows you to work on many things off the court that are closer to what you NEED to do ON the court. Let's face it, you will never hit a stationary ball on the court. All the topspin in the world won't help you see the ball better and learn to focus on a MOVING target. There are some design flaws in the Eye Trainer, namely that you do need to be careful or you can easily damage your frame if you catch the hard plastic ball holder. There are rubber guards but those can also wear out. But the point of this tool is to really learn to focus your eye and consistently find the center of the strings with a clean controlled swing. I would be interested to try the TopSpin Pro but I'm afraid it might lead may lead back to bad habits I had of hitting TOO MUCH topspin. I would say maybe try it if you don't already have topspin on your shots or if you only know how to hit flat balls. See this video for example of how much more through the ball the pros hit vs exaggerated topspin, yes even Rafa.

    • @TheTotalServe
      @TheTotalServe  4 роки тому +3

      Hi Lance. It sounds like you do not need the Topspin Pro. I see it as a tool that helps people who do not have the feel and understanding of topspin. And it will allow unlimited practice to reinforce this way of hitting the ball. It lets them feel and experience what it takes to make the ball spin forward. There is also the aspect of sight/vision/ ball watching in order to get clean hits on each ball as well as stroke production.
      The Eye Coach does have a broader range of concentration: vision/ball watching, timing of each hit, potential approach to the ball. The ball does spin forward but not with any velocity. Lenny's concentration with the Eye Coach is vision and ball watching and the rest is a bonus. Yes, the plastic ball holder can potentially ding the racket. Another inspiration to watch the ball:)
      Thank you so much for your reply. You have obviously put a lot of thought into this and have done a great job defining the 2 tools

    Hi Lisa, would the Topspin Pro also help with keeping your eye on the ball at contact/ somewhat like the Eye Coach? Thanks!

    • @TheTotalServe
      @TheTotalServe  4 роки тому

      Yes of course! The difference here is that w TSP the ball stays in a more fixed position. It doesn’t move as much so perhaps it’s a little easier to stay eye on the ball. But of course it will help. You need to see the ball fully in order to strike it w the intended Topspin. Ball watching is just not the main focus that Phil developed the product for. His primary focus is feeling and developing Topspin ( so more focus on technique)
      With Eye Coach the ball has a “fly away” effect. The ball is on a swing arm that simulates the ball going away from you. You have to track it out and back in so ball watching is the dominant feature. Lenny’s main focus with EC is vision, no head shift, eye on the ball, timing (so not concentrating most on technique)
      Both products are great for ball watching, just different

  • @TheTotalServe
    @TheTotalServe  Рік тому +1

    This is Lisa Dodson who did the video. My review is rather old now but I stand by all that I said. But, just as an add/clarification on for the video:
    Topspin Pro:
    1. The more the arm that holds the spinning ball recoils, basically the less topspin you are hitting. If it barely recoils then that means you are hitting more spin. Since there are varying degrees of topspin, if you are swinging hard, then the arm will always recoil. But you shouldn't hear a big clunking sound.
    2. Use TSP for practicing particular shots:
    If you are hitting a baseline drive you will have more recoil as you will be driving more through the ball
    If you are hitting a short angle you should have less recoil as you will be hitting a lot more spin ( more upward than outward on the ball) and probably less speed since it is a much shorter distance to out of bounds
    3. Portability is easy
    4. When I see people using TSP it is usually on the forehand.
    Don't forget your backhand!
    5. If you are creative then you can use this for developing many shots from different parts of the court. Topspin isn't always hit in the same amount or at the same trajectory.
    Eye Coach Trainer:
    1. If you are hitting topspin, then hit topspin on the Eye Trainer. Topspin comes from an upward swing path that you want to repeat. The ball won't spin much but that is not important with this tool. EC is designed more for keeping your head still, keeping eyes to the ball longer and for timing.
    2. Not so convenient to carry around as the base weight makes it pretty heavy but it is certainly doable
    They are both excellent tools. Players often ask me which one they should choose.
    Given the descriptions above, you should decide for yourself based on what you want to improve
    TSP: spin
    EC: ball watching/timing

      Hi John. Yes i see it all the time too, teachers trying to teach this vertical hit. what most people don't understand is how difficult it is to approach the ball "vertically" when it is coming in on a flat(ter) plane. You can however hit more vertically when a ball is dropping down from a high point (as a lob might or a very high ball might fall) as opposed to the flatter incoming ball. That is generally not explained well.
