Be careful with the radar. Wrong mindset and not good for the shoulder. Listen to your body and as Nick says, develop solid technique, but don't get caught up in trying to hit huge serves, because often you will involve too much arm which not only disconnects your power source but will be a disaster to your rotator cuff. As always Nick, great video, love your channel.
Love that your mom was helping!!!! Great video - I literally just bought top spin pro yesterday before I saw this video or else I would’ve used your link
18:58 There are multiple reasons why you can't measure the speed exactly, one of which is that the tennis ball doesn't go at a constant speed the entire time, so the next best thing would be to measure the average speed from the base to the net. Another reason I can think of is the physical aspect of measuring the speed, because of what the ball is made of, and because the ball is moving through the open air, the doppler effect doesn't work as well as we'd like to, even if we're to use a EMW instead of sound (like radio or micro waves), the shape of the ball and the changing shape of the ball, makes it difficult to measure against all the noise around the ball. What about cameras? You're gonna need very strong cameras and quality software, because a tennis ball is an unconventional object to use triangulation on with cameras, which will need an entire setup on the court (so it's not even a hand held radar anymore). One thing you can do to get a close to accurate result, is a lot of results. I'd suggest you make a total 100 serves of the same serve (like a flat first serve down the middle), divided over the span of a few days (like 4 days), where each day you measure the serves from a different angle (like the first day from the back, the second from the left front, etc.), and where you try to keep all the other factors as close to the same as possible (like same court, same time, same age balls, same amount of prep and warmup, ect.), then if you apply some elementary statistics to the data you collected, you can get a very close to accurate result (most commonly a 95%), or you can try for a precise result, but those require a lot more data to be reliable, since the more precise a result is, the less its accuracy is. Sorry for babbling on like this. I'm studying a science degree (2nd year now) and this falls right into the type of work I do at the University. I'd love to see how statistics and tennis can be used together realistically and practically, especially if it's used at a lot of different tennis levels
@@HiFilover168 Very fancy equipment that costs a lot of money, but something like that is nothing for grand slam organizers, especially when you have sponsors like BNP, American Express and Kia backing you. But I don't think hand held radars will have enough backing to be THAT accurate, at least not yet
I literally broke the tennis hitting gadget in about two minutes, I went for a shot, and almost knocked the ball through my window at my home, I was hitting the ball in the drive way. Great review my friend.
At first I loved topspin pro. Later on as development went, it actually teaches you to brush the ball but not put any force on the ball. You need to hit low to high and forward. But this will limit your forward movement. So keep that in mind
Agreed. I have a Topspin Pro too and experienced this. More spin than anything else developed in my forehand. Now I’m working with my coach to feel better about driving forward and get depth on my ground stokes. Also, in the video it didn’t look like he was driving forward much on the side view. It looked very vertical at the point of contact. I still like the device and will use it with this issue in mind.
It is how you use it. If you just stand there like him, then you are correct. If you practice it with body movement, then you get balls that drive. I make sure that my body turns and feet move during and after contact.
16:20 If I'd wanted to pick up the ball on the return with top spin, then my swing would be that vertical. But I think if I were to strike an offensive topspin, I'd blast right through that top guard there, because I'd want a lot more power. So I think it's a pretty good product to learn the topspin, especially at the beginner level, where the player can learn the rest of the topspin shots afterwards when they're already comfortable with topspins
I'm starting to giggle every time I imagine using the Topspin pro, that image of me sending it FLYING is hilarious! 😂 But I know I'm not supposed to send it flying, but it's the image of making the Topspin Pro the first tennis training device I'd hit over the fence, I can't help laughing 🤣
Gadgets can be ok for a bit of a change up and excitement for the kids but throughout my coaching days in the early-mid 2000s I found most kids and the parents thought their time was wasted if they weren’t hitting balls. A lot of people these days though think these things like the topspin pro are essential for development without understanding that it doesn’t take a lot to give a kid the idea of hitting topspin and that we all and especially 3 players that’ll forever go down probably as the GOATS never needed any gadgets to learn these skills
Nice video, i will think about the topspin pro. What i really enjoy as a tennis tool is the swingvision app with you can use to record your games and to keep track of the score. It also calculates the speed of the ball without radar and it works really great
Hey Coach Nick, I am a big fan. Two things have improved my tennis the most. Your instructional videos and the Ksports tennis rebounder net. It's great for topspin, full power strokes, forehand/backhand transition, finesse shots, ball tracking, and ingraining muscle memory. You should give it a try.
I keep a top spin pro around the house and take it out to work with my 12 year old. TSP is great just to get 'hits' at home. I have him hit 20 -50 and call it a day until we can get to court. I use it to randomly hit and keep the old man's form. I went out yesterday morning (haven't hit in a month+) and was surprised that my form was 'ok'. I definitely want to get the tennis pointer for him (and me) to work with.
You can use that device you had on your wrist up on the forearm just below the elbow. It will lock the wrist in a laid back position even with a semi-western or eastern grip.
A lot of rec players hit topspin backhand with continental grip. Appreciate if you could make a video on it and show us the negatives and positives. Many thanks for your work, coach.
I have the Billie Jean Eye Coach. Got it used for great price. Still haven’t used it. Have been wanting to get Tennis Pro but feel I probably will not use it either. I need to watch the ball longer. Maybe this will help me. I struggle with keeping the right grip for volleys but also my coach is trying to change my grip for top spin. The wrist trainer might work for me. I drop my racquet ALL the time.
Thanks again for all your great videos! My dad bought me the ball on a rubber string back thing when I was a kid in the early 1970s, made by a reputable tennis company at the time, Tretorn. I spent about 5 minutes with it and that was the end of it. I can't believe companies are still making this junk! RETURN IT!!!
Speaking as a relative beginner with the serve, my thoughts on the speed gun are that it would hopefully confirm what you feel which is that if you get the timing, swing path and contact right you generate a lot of speed quite easily. I agree that precision is very important too but if your serve is really really weak it's there to be put away for a winner so I think the speed gun might be useful in helping you get it up to a respectable level, speed wise.
EXCELLENT gadget video coach Nik! I will definitely try the topspin pro, now that I know you find it a useful tool. Extremely impressed with Anna making such solid contact on her forehand using the pointer. Your EXCELLENT teaching has Anna on the fast track for a high rating! 👏👍🎾🎾
I saw a similar device to the one you had on your wrist, except it attached to the waist. This confuses me because my coach has been teaching me about getting more spacing between the me and the ball, and a device like that i fell would just restrict me and have me closer the ball again. What's your opinion?
Great video concept. One note on the wrist assist I agree that it is useful for volleys but on ground strokes it's not ideal. That being said when Brad Gilbert was promoting this device having the wrist laid back to create a double bend was a popular concept. To do this with the device the instructions showed you how to adjust it differently from the volley technique. As you said it doesn't work for modern forehands
We call the pocket radar, the shoulder breaker because everyone over swings when you bring it out. It also seems to top out at 110mph. I've had a high level D1 college player hit and not be able to break 110mph with it.
Great video...I have the Topspin Pro which is fantastic, but have wondered about the others. I will get the Asstrainer through your affiliate link. Seriously though that wood spatula racket is a great idea for accuracy and building confidence.

When they get that feel and can maintain that laid off wrist through contact, then I introduce the idea of allowing the wrist to break well after contact.
