    This man was born to be a doctor.
    I've never heard someone in the health field explain anxiety like this before.
    He just explain exactly what I went through a couple year ago.
    I seriously though I was going to die. 😧
    I went to so many doctors, cardiologist, psychiatrist, etc and nobody could help me.. there was just no answer and I felt so helpless.
    I wish there was a Dr Sanjay Gupta I could have gone to when I needed help most.
    Bless your kind soul.
    Namaste👏

    I have been having some irregular heartbeats over the past few months, and have been worrying about it constantly ever since I started noticing them. And, like was explained, noticing them and worrying about them has only made my palpitations and overall life, worse.
    I had gone to my doctor to get their opinion, and they said that they were anxiety related, which I had assumed, but needed someone to tell me. After a few weeks or more, they started again, and my mind convinced me that the doctor was wrong, and that there was something more going on. Considering I have some very minor heart defects from birth, my senses have always been heightened to pick up the slightest changes in my heart rate, I immediately jumped to the conclusion that my heart was failing... Thanks, Brain.
    This video has essentially saved me. The way that this was explained, was perfection, and made the most sense out of anything that I've heard. Most people just say "Oh, it's anxiety." and leave it at that. Well, that doesn't necessarily help me, because I already knew that, I just needed to know WHY. I feel that there has been a weight released from my shoulders now, knowing that it really is all in my head. As a "stereotypical" American man, I know I need to get in better shape, but now I understand that I am going to be okay, and that I will get through this.
    So, thank you for this. You have helped, immensely.

      +York Cardiology You're one in a thousand doctors - who take time to explain these things to the patients. As a 66 year old man who has had anxiety issues (much better now) since college age or before, and felt PVC's in my stomach, chest, etc. since then, I am happy to see a doctor who is holistic and not judgmental or wanting to give someone a beta blocker or something that can as you know, make things worse and give a patient MORE symptoms! I get them when I eat too much, get stomach bloat, am anxious, and because my doctor feels that when I am stressed and my back muscles very tense or having "fasciculations" I also get them when I get a back muscle fasciculation. He ties this into the vagus nerve and things being overly "sensitized." He even put me on an EKG and then pushed the tender spots twitching off and on in my back muscles, and when I got a twitch I told him, and sure enough, on the rhythm strip, it showed that I "threw" an ectopic unifocal PVC! I also get positional PVC's - sometimes when I go to sleep and turn on my left side. So I switch to my back or right side, and they go away. The body is fascinating, but also, can cause benign symptoms which are scary - especially those prone to anxiety. We need more doctors like you, Dr. Gupta, in the USA! :) By the way, I have had echo, Holter, Thallium scan, and all other tests of course. All "negative." God bless you, sir! Please continue the videos!!

      Sierra, so do you still have ectopics heartbeats even after your health related anxiety has been treated? cuz im very aware of my heart beats and of courseee i feel my ectopics... i suffer of anxiety aswell most related with my health and fear that something horrible happens to me ... either doingexercise or not... ... what has been your way to get over it?

    • @MrMrsyako
      @MrMrsyako 8 років тому +9

      Der spanier, I started working out daily and walking no less than two miles a day on my elliptical. I also started taking magnesium along with my daily vitamin. They have virtually disappeared. I still get them from time to time when I eat and need to go to the bathroom, or if I'm very anxious. But it really seems like exercising and eating better have helped me. I hate them so much, I got to where I dreaded when they would start and that would start them. Try the magnesium, it's worth a shot!

    • @chass5438
      @chass5438 7 років тому +2

      I get them when I eat as well. Also bending over, laying down. All the classic reasons. That's what's confusing and that they've lasted 20 years now. I'm afraid to go anywhere, do anything, (with my kids) Sleep, go to work. The general anxiety BS and panic that goes along with it. Don't show any heart problems. I can't take anti-depression med's or SRRI's without serious side effects. This is very debilitating. I used to not let it bother me but it's back sorry to say.

    Thanks so much for this Sanjay, you are describing me, I've become hypersensitive to my RVOT ectopics. Have seen three cardiologists here in Hong Kong now out of fear that I have a serious heart condition. Four 24 hour holter monitors, 2 echoes 6 months apart of my heart, 2 stress treadmill tests, 2 full blood work ups, several trips to A&E in panic, numerous consultations and 'normal' ECG's etc. later, apparently I'm physically very healthy, and after a year of this, finally visited a counsellor to work on my health anxiety. Your video is great because it helps to reaffirm my belief this condition is psychological, manifesting itself physiologically.

    All these years later and still relevant and refreshing. I know in my head that my ectopics are anxiety driven. I literally stop them when they come. It’s really a mental thing. Our bodies respond to us. I have to work on my health anxiety. I keep hearing about CBT. And you’re so correct. The anxiety causes the tension and discomforts which triggers the anxiety which triggers the discomfort. I have to break that cycle at the source. The anxiety!!!

    I have listened to this Sanjay Gupta for awhile now and he is very well read and seems to have rational approaches to irrational problems (like anxiety). The thing that is tricky about health anxiety is that you seemingly forget all the past experiences you had with it and that it turned out alright after getting checked up. When you are in the thick of it, it is very hard to remind yourself that this too will pass. I definitely think I need anxiety medication at some points but I refuse to give in because I feel like I can figure this out. It is a conundrum but I want to have control and I feel like medication would be a surrendering of this, sort of turning on autopilot instead of taking control of the module and pulling out of the spiral.

    God bless you sir. You put words to what I’ve been going through for a couple of years now. I’m a 32 year old mother of 4 with no heart defects or other conditions.4 doctors told me my heart is healthy , it’s just anxiety. But it’s hard to believe when you’re feeling these palpitations, breathlessness, and occasional ectopics almost daily. But your calm explanations have eased my mind. Thanks. God bless from USA

    this has helped me so much this evening. ❤ I’ve had bad anxiety ever since I was young. especially health-related anxiety. when I started experiencing palpitations, it was hard to get my mind not to focus on them. i get them quite often, and I am constantly hyper-aware of my heartbeat (especially when trying to fall asleep). i’ve been to so many doctors & cardiologists, even the ER, and everything always comes back normal. it’s like deep in my mind, i know i’m okay, but the anxiety & “what-if’s” overpower the logic, lol. anxiety is vicious!! sometimes these palpitations will happen when i’m not even feeling particularly anxious! but you’ve explained it in a way i’ve never heard before, and instantly made me feel relief. thank you so, SO much. ❤

    Brilliant! I know for sure that millions of people (including me) have had extreme anxiety over the covid threat, people dying of it, being "locked down" etc. I was very ok in myself before all that, Worry about my family, extended family, friends, and me getting it. Why did some die and some not? Ectopics abounded! This is spot on, Thank you.

    Thanks for this. I had AFIB for several years over which I was extremely symptomatic (anxious and depressed). After a second ablation, sessions of AFIB declined enormously. Nonetheless, I remained hyper attuned to my heart --always afraid that the AFIB will return. Following the second ablation, regular EKGs picked up no AFIB but frequent ectopic events. While I was not initially aware these were occurring, I became more and more aware of them gradually over time -- to the point where, now, I feel them all the time. The cycle you described fits my experience very well. With the first few initial ectopic events I picked up, my anxiety spiked, I listened more intently for other such events, got much better at recognizing them, making me more anxious and so on..... Thanks for your analysis and advice (and all your very useful videos)!!

    I have these same problems with palpitations, skipped beats and anxiety. Whenever it happens , I panic and my blood pressure goes dangerously high- 213/110. I usually go to the hospital, where it returns to the high normal range- 140/75. Once they kept me, did overnight monitoring and a nuclear stress test, only to find nothing, but arrhythmias. I also get very gassy and have some chest tightness, during the anxiety. I just completed an echocardiogram and I am waiting for the results, but the technician said that it looked okay to him, and all he heard was the palpitations during his exam. I had started taking Magnesium glicinate 400mg, and that helped, but I ran out and am having trouble getting the same kind. Your explanation puts my mind at ease and I am going to try more exercise and meditation. By the way, I am 76 years old. I do not want to become a hypochondriac. You are a wonderful doctor, and I really appreciate your help.

    I am literally sitting here sobbing because I am so relieved. Everything you have said makes absolute sense. You described me to a tee. My only concern is that when my heart starts racing from fear with the PVC’s , that it will trigger some kind of dangerous issue and my heart will skip too many beats and just stop.

    I just want to echo what others have said. Thank you for making these videos, you are a really good person. I have had anxiety since i was about 18, im now 31. I have finally started to overcome my anxiety via acceptance and self compassion. Interestingly, as I actually started to get over it and relax, I felt wonderful for a few weeks then ectopics started. I had felt heart hiccups before but never like this. My mum has heart disease and it runs in my family so i am going to get checked. I have heard what you said though, for anxious people our mind really can play tricks on us. Anxious people are highly self conscious and self monitor, so I will extend my acceptance to my ectopics. take care

I have observed that despite how much i have learned about anxiety and its effects, i am still fighting it years on but I seem more able to slow and stop it in its tracks far quicker than I used to. The fluttering hearty/ectopic beats thing is so frightening even though i know it is 99% anxiety most of the time. You are very reassurring many thanks.

    What a gorgeous little dog is Bluebell. Thankyou Sanjay. I had very obvious palpitations last night . It felt like , on taking my pulse that my heart suddenly stopped for a split second, then quickly took up the next beat to carry on. No pain, just a bit alarming.
    My best friends funeral yesterday and a long journey to get there, and family members getting stressed and squabbling?
    So not surprising. I’m glad to be reassured it’s not serious , and that , I will be ok once I’ve destressed .

    As a doctor-sufferer (PAC) for fifteen years, I know what the surefire trigger for this loathsome symptom is -- foreboding, anticipation, fear (of the ectopics and what they mean) and generalised anxiety, especially health anxiety. If you are otherwise engaged/preoccupied, you either don't get them or notice them. A good night's sleep, an engrossing read, a favourite song, travel and brisk walking are some of the best antidotes IMO. I hypothesise that the brain's heightened awareness equals an enhanced sympathetic/adrenergic drive, which irritates the aberrant 'pacemaker' or accessory pathway in the heart muscle. The primary driver/culprit here is the brain, not the heart.

    Dr. Gupta thank you so much❤🙏 you just described exactly what i am going through right now every single little thing related to my heart or chest its like my brain is fine tuning to nothing but that. And i find myself building up my anxiety more and more everyday to the point that couple days ago i struggled falling asleep because thats all i can think of, the what if's blah blah my brain wont shut up until almost an hour later. The next day my blood pressure was high of course..no proper sleep and all and the anxiety and stress. Then this adds up to my anxious brain again😢 it is so good to hear it coming from you that im actually not imagining things. That my anxiety is indeed the root cause of it all. You are such a blessing to us all. Stay safe and healthy. Namaste.
