Before you make any changes or upgrades, get it cleaned up and fly it for 50-100 hours. Figure out if there are any issues. This will give you some time to think things over and identify what matters. For example, you may want to drop in a nice AP in there. Or you may figure out that radios need replacement (or something like that). You may conclude that you really want a new interior (or not). Just give it a few months and fly it for a bit. I promise, it will give you clarify as to what upgrades you want (or need) to make.

Love this channel. Came across in the private jet purchase video and have binged watched about 50 videos. Maybe more. I’m afraid of heights but watching your videos has motivated me to get my pilots license and buy a small plane for the freedom of going where you want when you want. Love all the videos. Would love to see more hands on videos to give more knowledge of working on planes. Keep up the great work.

You should sell merchandise that copies what you're all flying home in . Then we (your fans) can buy the outfit.

Btw my favorite top gun shirt but pink shorts. . I always have to be difficult😊

1st thing to buy - a folder sunshade to keep the interior from getting hot while the plane is sitting in the sun as well as something you could prop up over you as you fly, keep you from getting baked on long flights. It might be better than any upgrade if all else is generally fine

Before you do anything, buy a mini fire axe and keep it behind the Pilot’s seat. If that plane flips over in an off airport landing (or if your new latch fails) and the plane catches in fire you will need to break the canopy to get out out. Other than that, polish it and fly it! Fly safe!

Me, being an airline pilot, I love the fact that your buddy briefed the departure and what to do if you lost the engine at different points of the takeoff and climb. As far as the paint, I think if you're just going to putt around in the Zodiak, a good polish and touch-up of the existing paint and re-do the trim that got beat up. If you don't mind putting a LOT of sweat into the plane, polished aluminum would be stellar! Nice job getting the Zodiak up and running! Looks super fun to fly!

As far as paint or polish, remember that chrome don't get you home. I would recommend logging more air time in it. Seeing what other secrets (like that latch) it may be hiding at this time. Investing your time and money into enjoying flying it. And doing only the repairs and upgrades that actually effect safety and performance for now. After a couple hundred flight hours maybe look more at how it looks. First and foremost, a plane is meant to fly. Let someone else own the prettiest Hanger Queen.

Honestly as a detail hobbyist. A decent buff and ceramic coating would look magic. BUT, as mentioned below. Glare could be a real issue with such an awesome canopy. With that in mind. I would recommend paint over a wrap because of the multitude of screws needing access. A matt or satin finish on top with an internal canopy slide will cut the glare immensely. Great vid.

On the instrument upgrades you might be stuck with using costly certificated instruments because the plane is SLSA and factory built. I think if you're going to consider painting it, you have to look at the cost to value equation.. I mean if you're keeping it for 5 years and will get your money out of it, paint it. If you're not sure what to do, I'd polish it down and put decals on it and call it good. Concerning avionics, man if it works it works.. and that plane really doesn't NEED a glass cockpit.. it's a GREAT starter plane, it's a 25,000 plane someone could LOVE for years! I wouldn't go crazy with it.. Some upgrades, LED lights, weight reduction wherever you can, new plugs, injectors whatever.. yeah of course.. new electronic magneto on one side, maybe.. depends on the sponsors!!!

FLIGHT CONTROL CHECK…..VERY IMPORTANT that you visually check that the ailerons/rudder/ elevator move in the CORRECT direction before departure…..ESPECIALLY coming out of SERVICE or Not flown in a long time. Things get rigged wrong….i.e. Right Aileron FULL UP-right control full right…etc..just an observation.

Avionics = iPad / iLevil Autopilot iPad is the hammer and with the (for me) the iLevil Autopilot then you will be fully equipped. Greetings from Germany EDAJ

In regards to the paint and avionics upgrade, you will have to decide what the mission is for this a/c. Is it for basic transportation or are you trying to win awards at airshows? If the former, just buff the existing paint out, replace the graphics, and call it good. If the latter, you will end up putting so much money into it that there is NO WAY you will recover your investment. Right now you can sell it for 50 to 60k and make a nice profit of 30 to 40k. If you want a show a/c it would be cheaper to buy someone else's plane in that condition.
BTW, I would NOT have gotten back into that plane after the canopy handle malfunctioned. Getting trapped in a cockpit like that in the AZ sun is a life-threatening situation. It needed to be repaired then and there.

NO ALUMINUM POLISH. Clean and touch up paint. New vinyl. Add color design over white base color.

You are in the dry desert. Polish the 6061 aluminum. Just replace the artificial horizon with Uavionix AV30E and call the panel good. I bought a similar one, but E-AB, for $17,000, Corvair powered, with log books.

I think the polished aluminum would look great! But screw the avionics....you need missiles!!!! I'd go with sidewinders!!!!

Polished aluminum - is a PITA to maintain, even in AZ. Ask the CAF chapter at Mesa Falcon Field -- and they have volunteers!
Being based in HOT/sunny AZ, bright white is your best bet, lest you burn your hands on bare metal!
So as for colors, WHITE for upper surfaces for sure, with maybe a color accent stripe on the sides and wingtips. If you < think > you want polished, try that on the undersides first. Think the pre-1990s airliners. White on top to reflect sun, bare aluminum below to save weight. Eastern, United, Northwest, TWA - all were bare-bottomed! ;)

When you fly all kinds of planes, maybe bring tiny reserve chutes in the cabin just in case. I have one, little 1kg pouch with a loop. You can stick a leg in the loop and jump out. Doesn't have to be elegant or comfortable, just has to keep you alive if control surfaces stop working. In which case your odds are like trump avoiding jail sentence. Not good.

I didn't get a great look at the panel, the engine monitor instrument looks nice though. If it were my personal plane I would probably throw in a GI-275 for a primary instrument and a cheap GPS, maybe an autopilot depending on your missions and what is available for that plane. No need for a crazy GPS, but a GNX 375 would be nice for GPS and ADS-B in and I think it can replace the transponder. Less than $20k and youd have a nice panel with GPS, ADS-B weather and traffic and GI-275 for attitude/airspeed/altitude.
