I’m 51 years old. I’ve been flying since I was 14. I’ve been looking for an airplane that I could afford my entire adult life and have not yet been able to do so. I really wish I had seen this because I could’ve bought this plane. Good job guys!
I have absolutely no idea of planes what so ever. But give that old girl some love. A deep clean, a little polish and maybe some touch ups on the dashboard etc. and please keep these videos coming. The world of general aviation is fascinating
The Cherokee 180 was my favorite rental. Economical, reliable and fun! As to your question: I am old. I like Piper aircraft. I am not sure about Cirrus (ONLY my uninformed opinion) and I think they are much too expensive. Now, do I like the deal? No. I LOVE the deal. Like you said, having cash on hand makes a huge difference.
That 140 brings back a lot of memories (from the early 1980's). I bought N6904W so that I would stay with my flying lessons. My instructor had a bit of a speech impediment & always called them Cherokeets. Good luck fellas. Luv your channel.
They really are dumb comments, no one serious about buying an aircraft thinks 10k planes pop up flyable everyday. Most of the commenters probably know Jack squat about aircraft.
I own and fly a 1965 PA28-180 they are great airplanes. The 65 is the first year that had the fiberglass cowling like what your 235 has. As well as the bigger spinner. We paid 45k for ours with a 1200 hour engine which we had to overhaul at the next annual but now she flies well with the new engine. It gets off the ground in 650 ft with just me and full tanks. I can’t complain about that and 1,030 lbs useful load burning 6.5 gph at 9,500 cruise. You really can’t beat it. I love the videos. I have most of my hours in Cherokees, i trained, soloed and did 2 checkrides in them. Soon to be a commercial pilot. If you ever need someone to ferry a small plane, especially a Cherokee, I’m willing to do it!
People are starting to unload the toys,I am seeing Corvettes, boats AND airplanes selling for thousands less than they were last year and I think it will continue. That's a nice find..good luck!
@@johnsmith7676 just let go of my 68 180 no time to fly AND the upkeep is stupid expensive, the freedom to fly LOL regulate all the pp right out of site
"Not that bad" is what we all say when looking over something we really want. I once said that about the roof on a house I bought. The roof looked much, much worse the day after the closing than the "not that bad" it rated before.
I was shocked when Larry and I went out to see it before you wired the money. I was expecting to find a bird nest or two when I first heard about the price but the more Larry and I looked it over the more impressed we were at the condition of the plane. This was an incredibly good buy!
Nice plane! Hope you did a title search...I **know** you did a title search, right? I was almost caught by an unscrupulous seller who tried to get me to do a quick cash transaction on one of those "great deal" airplanes. Luckily, one of the airport regulars took me aside and clued me in. There were two...count 'em **two** old liens on the title. One of them had actually been satisfied. But I called the other lienholder up, and they said that they'd give me a reward if I'd take the plane on a "test flight" and deliver it to them. I was tempted, but I didn't. But crisis averted!
Maybe someone else has mentioned, but the Cherokee line started with N5000W and was sequential for a long time. One could actually look at the N number and figure the serial number. I think you made a great purchase, and understand where the seller was coming from. Some people don’t understand the as is, where is concept. Prior to the price explosion, I sold a 140 that had been sitting for a few years the same way. I would have put some money in it if I didn’t also have my 235.
@8:55 You guys should definitely not fly that with the missing screws in the tail cone if that comes off or dislodges or more of the screws comes out in flight, it can jam the elevator and could be catastrophic for whoever’s flying it… I’ve had it happen on the ground…. It’s a cheap fix and any hangar should have a couple of backplates and screws
Looks every bit as good, better inside than the 180 I took my BFR flight in a few years back. It was for sale for over $38,000. That interior on this one is great! What a steal.
Congrats on the new plane, Mann I am so tired of congratulating you on your purchases. L O L you know I don’t mean that as a 75-year-old dude I’m extremely happy for you and your brother.
A Cherokee 180 that's one annual away from airworthy for $10K???? She is the Funk & Wagnalls definition of a "diamond in the rough". Yep, that was an Aztec. PS: The afro hairstyle went out in the 70's 😁
I had the opportunity to buy a Cherokee 140D for $6,000. In excellent shape and with a current airworthiness cert. Of course this was in 1979. Too bad I could not find something like that now. I was taking flying lessons in Texas and my instructor had the plane. Unfortunately I was in the military and had just gotten orders for Korea.
Maybe your best buy yet. As you said Jeff, cash is king, and being ready to act quickly often nets these gems. I can't even begin to name all the great deals I lost because I didn't have cash on hand. Great job guys!
Ugh, this is the plane I am wanting to get. This is awesome! I am in Arizona as well! This is motivating. Really want to save and buy one for my flight time and learning.
My little brother is finishing up flight school and is thinking about purchasing his own plane in order to complete his powers for commercial. Are you guys going to be in the market to sell any of your planes in the next 3 to 4 months? Also, what is your method to finding an acquiring such good deals?
Much like any speculative deal you have to be prepared to lose some or all of it, so glad it worked out for you. I wish aviation was as cheap in the UK, buying the thing is the easy bit, the standing still and maintenance costs are the ball breaker.
Do a basic cleanup and just flip it. Some basic avionics, used maybe even with a good GPS in there, paint the plane and fix the headliner and flip it for a profit. You don't want to keep building up a fleet, gotta start flipping them sooner than later.
Nice to see that JR will save this plane and treat it the way it should be treated. If JR is overstocked they might give the plane an annual as required, do a little waxing, etc., and put it up for sale to make a handsome profit; otherwise, sometimes a thing is destined to stay with an owner who has rescued it!
I doubt you'd want to give out your secrets but any chance you'd do a vid on airplane auctions and what sites you watch? I realize this video was a barnstormers plane.
That’s a pretty great deal on a Cherokee 180. So what if it needs an Annual and paintwork and some avionics upgrades. That would make a nice trainer for new or low time pilot.
I remember learning to fly in a Cherokee 140 and had no idea what most of the buttons did. Kept thinking the wires would catch on fire. With that paint condition should be at least $30,000- $40,000.
I’m 6’7” and didn’t fit too well in a ‘65(I think) 140. If you need a little more room you can drill a new set of holes in the seat rails to get the seat back a bit…the legality of that being up to you lol
Another great one.... I have lots of hours in a 180.... fun to fly and affordable. How about one of your issues you share with us what publications you use to find these deals.... I hate for you to have toooo many planes and others of us still looking. Just checking have you got your ppl yet or have you moved on. Thanks for sharing with us. Bob
I've never seen Cherokee 180 with that cowling. Usually that is on the Cherokee 140s. The first versions of that model must have come with that cowling. But 180hp is what that plane needs. The 140s were barely more than a 2 person plane. With that engine that's a really good deal.
Wow what an incredible buy. I feel a bit bad for the seller but circumstances like this happen. As for things to do on that plane, IMHO if the bones of the plane are truly good I would consider giving the whole thing significant cosmetic work both inside and out.
WHAOW JR YOU GOT A GREAT DEAL AND IT SLIPPED BY ME CAUSE I WANT TO GO BACK TO FLYING AND GET A CHEROKEE 160 OR 180 LIKE YOU DID. AUSOME BROUGH. MARK HALF MOON BAY AIRPORT CALIF.
17:10 THAT OIL COOLER BLOCKING CLEAN AIR FROM COOLING ENGINE IS A MAJOR ISSUE. THAT OIL COOLER SHOULD IN THE BACK DOWN LOW WITH AN AUXILIARY FAN. THAT ENGINES LEFT SIDE WILL BURN A VALVE IN NEXT 50 HOURS. WITH THAT OIL COOLER BLOCKING FREE AIR FROM LEFT SIDE.
Man if I could find a deal like this I would buy it and get my license in it with a cfi! If you guys ever want to sell one for that or make a youtube series for something like that let me know

They really are dumb comments, no one serious about buying an aircraft thinks 10k planes pop up flyable everyday. Most of the commenters probably know Jack squat about aircraft.
There are no cheap airplanes… only airplanes that need 3x their value in repairs and upgrades
@@Jeffrey-Flys to be fair - a cherokee for $40k all in following that math is still pretty awesome deal lol
Just don’t complain about an in flight fire or the wings falling off or engine quitting or control surfaces jamming…buying a cheap old airplane.

All around the world same problems.
Love those old Cherokees with no toe brakes. Fun using the hand brake to slow down.

Well I get it, you’re afraid to run out of oil, but adding a qt just in case is not good. Fastest way to blow seals is to over fill with oil!

Even if you had to do the spar inspection, you can either part it out or do the AD. I'd not take the risk.

Glad its had a spar inspection. I would never have gotten in that thing without knowing for sure.
That is definitely a big cost but major peace of mind!
it didnt need the inspection, it does not apply to straight wing cherokees.

Holy crap Larry lost mad weight. Good for him
id love to be in your shoes flying planes like that must be an amazing feeling keep vids going love all of them
Right on JR. thank you for everything aircraft beautiful Cherokee
25 gallon tanks not 50 :). I’m probably biased but you guys should keep this one to train and get your certs in after adding some avionics
