Amazing to see it flying again. Keep it and fly it for a few years. It will still be worth a lot when you get ready to sell. I owned it for a few years. I flew it solo cross country to Tennessee and back to Idaho. My last trip was to the aircraft broker in Carson City NV. Now that I have found your channel I will have to catch up on what you do. Good luck.
This is amazing. I’m a public elementary school teacher and a student pilot. I’d love to own a small plane like this and show my kids that anything is possible when you put your mind to it.
Dear Bros, Your Zodiac CH601XL SLSA is completely ready to be sold and despite the fact you haven’t added your labor hours you’ve spent to the total costs I think you can make some profit with this plane. Wish you a successful and speedy selling and look forward to your next vlog plus send you love from the Netherlands
I think it was a great deal! Wish i could find a deal like that. Ive looked for one of these for some time that was reasonably priced. Are you going to sell this one?
@@danblumel care to elaborate? I'm just curious. I have no horse in the race and have never done it, but I have seen forum posts where owners claimed their SLSA to ELSA conversion was fairly straightforward, simple, and provided them some advantages such as being able to change equipment (I imagine like the $5000 avionics package vs the $30,000 avionics package pointed out in an earlier video on this aircraft).
Ya'll are young--you can't put a price on the value of the knowledge you're gaining. And I don't think you can put a price on that! Great project, thanks for sharing. Now give the dang thing away to some deserving student pilot! Essay contest maybe? Or, can you use it as a free/low-cost trainer? A young eagles program maybe?
You are 16,000 I mean 25,000 airplane is very cool, but for short trips around your area at 5 gallons of fuel an hour is absolutely fantastic. Imagine the money you’ll save when you’re going out to look at another airplane. Or need to just go have lunch somewhere else. 5 gallons an hour that’s awesome.
This is a amazing project, and a huge win. You got a flying/airworthy airplane for less than $23k. Where else could you find something like that? I can’t wait to see it detailed! Please keep the affordable flyer theme going! Show how accessible aviation can be! I think you should keep this one and fly it to find the next affordable flyer. JR Aviation….saving aviation one airplane at a time! Well done guys!
I've got a perfectly fine, no damage, certified flying airplane for sale $22K. Turn key. Fresh annual. Ready to go to a new owner. My point is aviation doesn't have to be expensive. There are alot of simple cheap aircraft
Great video. The cost you will save training in this thing is crazy valuable. Keep the low cost budget builds coming. Definitely gives some courage to take on one of these projects ourselves!
if you look at this objectively , you paid $18,000 for an air frame, roughly $6000 for parts, and needed to account for about $10-$15,000 worth of labor. That totals out to about $40,000. That’s probably a low estimate, OK I’m willing to go there. Here’s the thing, you made your money back when you bought the plane. You got it for a song. You have a lot of experience, you have a lot of friends that know what they’re doing. it’s a fair guess that most newer private pilots don’t have the same capabilities or experience. The danger is that a new pilot may go out and spend $16,000 for an airplane, thinking to replicate your success, but may end up spending a lot more than what you did because basically they don’t know what they’re doing.
RE: cost of your time. If it's something you enjoy doing, that you want to do, then I think you can wash that cost. Do guys who like to golf calculate the cost of their time on the course? Do you calculate the cost of time you spend with your family? How much does it cost to sit around a backyard fire with your buddies? People spend crazy amounts of money on going places to have fun. If you have fun working on a plane, then in my thinking, you are way ahead.
People actually give you guys crap for profiting on your business? That's insane. Those people are idiotic. I had a great time watching this series and can't wait to see if the detail guys can work some magic. I've got a good feeling about it.
The positioning of the LED's is wrong. The outboard unit should be the taxi version with its wider beam. Part of its beam that would reach directly in front of the plane and farther is being cut off by the wing leading edge, being in the way. The two lights positions should be swapped to get the most from both of them. The landing light has a narrower beam so it would work correctly and the same in the inboard position.
I own a factory built zodiac also. Yours is probably worth about $40,000-$50,000. The missing logs hurt it however it’s a very simple plane and fairly new so maybe a 10% loss in value without them.
Your channels are by far my favorite! As an active pilot with a Grumman Cheetah, plus a Corby Starlet I built from plans, your aviation videos are right up my alley. Plus in my younger days, I rebuilt several cars including a 1978 Datsun 280Z that I dropped a Chevy V8 in from a Camero, your car channel is fascinating also. Keep up the great work!
Haters will hate Jeff. Great job recognizing a possible great buy and then following through to make it a sweet little plane for someone, and a profit for you, so you can buy more jet fuel! lol Stay safe my friend.
great work, from finding the plane to getting it air worthy and home. I used to work nights and I lived 2 blocks from the beach. My beach cruiser bike got stolen and I found a beater and made it look new. My friends said you should start doing this and selling them. I would buy expensive bikes that were totaled from lack of care. Sometimes buying a $600 bike for as low as $15. I would then spend ridiculous amounts of time on them. Sometimes I'd buy a bike and the owner would say silly things like, "It just needs to be polished" lol I might have spent $50 on a bike I'd sell for $200 but it had a $1000 or more labor into it. You gotta value your time. At the time I was refereeing, I was refereeing Hockey and coaching skating for Hockey players. An Hour lesson, $50. An hour long game, $20. (inline hockey) . Whats a realistic hourly wage? Today, I install and repair large format printers. A typical repair trip is $1200 a day plus travel. A customer can loose thousands of dollars each day his printer is down. An HVAC guy charges over $100 per hour fyi, that guy charging you $2000 for multiple days? lol Thats a steal. anyway, at just $20 per hour which is what I made for refereeing kids in 2012 you have a big bill my friend. You can't diminish that cost, its real.
Even factoring in the absence of the logbooks this plane is worth $40 to 50k, having the logbooks would probably add $10 to 20k. So, you came out looking pretty good. Remember, you took a huge risk in buying this plane, and how do you evaluate risk? What if the plane didn't have that AD done and it was now just worth the parts?
So, the plane owes you 24.5k, I reckon you could get 85-95k for the plane as it now stands, so I reckon you have made at least $60k... Well done guys. I would rathere see you bring back more older aircraft, the drop more money into the citation
Don't pump the carb until you start cranking. Carb is mounted upside down and the pump squirt gas that is not atomized will go down into the filter, not up into the engine. If you get a backfire it can light your gas soaked filter on fire.
I think you undervalued the labor by at least half. You’re looking easily at $15k - $18k in labor, consumables, EPA fees, storage, etc. I’d say your ‘real’ cost is really closer to $45k when it’s all said and done.
so… how much income from UA-cam for your “time” on this project? How many view hours compared to work hours? Someone owes me $147.98 for watching this project!!!!!! 😂eeeee
However you stack it, $25k for a plane with just a few hundred hours on it is hard to beat, given today's market. I think there's plenty of room to add a mark-up and walk away with a profit. That said, I'm curious if there's any impact on the missing log books on insurance or anything else? But instead of selling it, maybe you could do a lease-back with a ground school or club in the area and offer cut-rate fees to aspiring pilots? Do something GOOD with it! (I could suggest a club at Deer Valley :) )
So in a nutshell, ready to fly, singed off for $22400 for a plane worth $60-70K from the factory - new. It’s got to be worth at least $35-45K should you sell it tomorrow.

At some point the gains you reap sharing your passion for these kinds of restorations will be there, albeit difficult to calculate. You'll inspire others to follow in your footsteps and they'll return the favor...of that I'm sure of! Thank you for all you do....

Start with a sailboat, it requires similar skills but it is marginally more forgiving, and you only have to bother left and right and not up and down.
Anything is possible if you are willing to work for it !
I think it was a great buy and really like watching you guys bring it back to life and flying again

It’s a hobby and hobbies have no real opportunity cost. The cost is transformed in fun. Right?
The number I usually hear and see is somewhere around a 60 percent cost reduction due to a lack of logbooks. So you’d have to have a buyer that believes it’s a 60-70k plane to get back to that number, or someone that’s willing to take the risk there wasn’t a prop strike, accident, or some other hidden stuff going on. I’ll say from experience there might be some gremlins that don’t pop up until you start flying it 20-30 hours. It’s a sweet looking plane tho and it would be neat to see you guys take some trips with it or like acrobatic lessons if it’s rated for that
Very cool outcome! Well worth the investment. 👍
How much would all the labor be if you didn't have all that free labor with you as a DIY helper?
Congratulations on a this fix er upper. Have no idea what it’s worth, $40-60K?

25,000 + for that plane. Good deal. You should definitely offer him some money weather he takes it or not that's beside the point.
Wait ! Did he missed the cost of the Goodwill Clothes ! Holding back for a future video Update?
That's the only affordable plane I've seen in the last 20 years. Great deal! Congrats on the W
Well...for us Boat-Nuts it was money thrown into the clouds instead of the water. The important thing is that it was done very well with infectious enthusiasm.
Cirrus video?
If you are going to add your labor to the cost then you should deduct the amount you made from your UA-cam videos on the plane !!! Fair is fair !!!
You should subtract what that plan made you on UA-cam making videos
I would’ve put a new fuel pump in it just for safety measures. Can’t cost that much money?
bravo…..good for you. Starting a business is hard. Make sure everyone gets paid.

How much did you make on UA-cam revenue? Plus what’s it worth at the end?
There is one at KCFV that is in much better condition than yours and its for sale. and it's always been hangared.
Has anyone ever told you that you look like "Screech" from Save from the Bell? Lol
I think a fair price considering no log books would be about 45 to 50 thousand
At some point the gains you reap sharing your passion for these kinds of restorations will be there, albeit difficult to calculate. You'll inspire others to follow in your footsteps and they'll return the favor...of that I'm sure of! Thank you for all you do....
Have you tried contacting the previous owner to see if the logs are available? 😊
I feel obligated to say that your legs look pretty awkward in that plane no offense intended good job on the project thanks for showing us the details
Is this airplane going to be for sale? If so I would be highly interested in purchasing this aircraft

Do you have to declare the "free" or "donated" parts on your income tax?
