The fact that Stan Lee was reading the script for "Mallrats" in Captain Marvel for his final ever cameo was the most heartwarming and heartbreaking thing I've ever seen.
It was a special cameo, a thank you to Kevin for putting him in the movies, I smiled when I saw him reading the script, that’s a major back to the well moment.
@ARC117Studios they were filming them in bulk in front of a green screen because of his health, so it might have been the last one he filmed even if it's not his last appearance.
I think I have heard most of this Kevin Smith stuff before, but goodness gracious does he make every story engrossing, self-deprecating and hilarious. Loved every minute.
This is the only GQ Interview I’ve been able to watch start to finish. Kevin Smith locks you in with his storytelling. Loved his talking at the college campus films.
As someone who grew up watching Carlin with my father, the reverence Smith has for him is fantastic. Carlin was a one of a kind, and these stories about him just make me admire him more.
Yup, to this day my parents still speak fondly of Carlin. Loved watching him on Carson. Turned out he was a neighbor of friends of theirs growing up in Morningside Heights.
I once asked Kevin ad a Red State premier if he was a Firangi in person because of his obsession with his wife's ears, he laughed heartily. It felt great giving him a laugh after he gave me so many. Later he blocked me on Twitter. 👍
I watched Dogma and then I made my whole family watch Dogma when I was like 14-15. All of the really adult jokes went over my head, my dad was dying laughing, and my mom was horrified.😂
Of all his movies, Dogma is 2nd for box office, 3rd on Rotten Tomatoes ratings, multiple screenplay nominations, all star cast, 3.5/4 Ebert rating... I swear nobody knows what underrated means anymore. The movie is very well regarded.
It’s Kevin’s incredible recall that really informs his storytelling. You can tell he is just sucking up these amazing moments and preserving them for both himself and others to enjoy. His Superman movie story and his Prince story are priceless.
Dogma is an epic movie that slaps you in the face with it genius without you even knowing your being educated. It’s still one of my favourite movies to this day with an amazing cast!
Mallrats is by far his most underrated film. As the follow up to Clerks it lacked the raw artistic edge Clerks had but Mallrats is just such a fun and silly movie that encapsulates 90s teenage culture. One of my top comfort films.
I genuinely love that George Carlin put that much thought into his scene, and thank goodness he had that conversation with Kevin of all people who can perfectly recreate every line (cos I have no doubt that he got every single syllable correct)
Mall Rats has ended many depressive episodes for me. It's my favorite and I can quote it verbatim. Movies are part of my vernacular. It is not uncommon for me to walk up to my Mom and say Snoogins as a term of endearment! I am so very glad that Jay has made a comeback. Fortnite is nor my favorite game, but I'll watch Jay play all day! After seeing Deadpool & Wolverine, my first reaction was not to quote the movie, my first reaction was: "Shall I call you Logan, Weapon X?..."No, Wolverine, Schnicky, Schnicky Schnikes!" I was also happy that Ethan's character could not see the Magic Eye picture, cause I can't see them either.
When I was 18, I worked at a gas station that rented vhs tapes and we were allowed to “rent” one movie for each shift we worked. It was at this time I rented clerks and mallrats and became a huge Kevin smith fan.
Tusk gets a lot of flak for being one of the most hilarious black comedies of the past 10 years. It's a perfect midnight movie. If any movie deserves to be tonally weird, it's that one. I love it (and Red State).
I was at the Tusk world premiere and Justin Long said he fired his agent (or maybe it was manager) over Tusk as they were convinced he should not do it.
I’ve never seen a Kevin Smith film, but of course know him via pop culture. I found this video really intriguing and now interested in seeing these films.
Mallrats was the first movie of his that I saw. I found it in a $5 vhs discount bin when I was a teenager. In the 90's lol I introduced my friends to it. And started my love for Kevin Smith movies.
Watching this made me realize how many awesome actors that worked with him have passed. Glad they were a part of the films he made for us to appreciate.
This man's movies encapsulate so much of my 90s existence, Dogma, Chasing Amy and Mallrats especially. In my eyes, Mallrats specifically will always hold a place of nostalgia for me, i could never think of it as a failure. It sucks that he holds it at a lower status than the others but in terms of it's "success or effort" i get it. Hopefully he realizes how special it is to so many of us...
Fantastic interview! Nice to see a sober Kevin explain the deep feelings of his movies/characters. I hadn't known of his transformation to being sober. The thing the remains the same is that everyone changes. 🤘🤘
huge fan. my daughter is 16. tried to explain kevs impact culturally in the 90s. when i told her he made tusk she went bonkers. we love that movie so much. thank you.

I actually waited on Kevin 😊at San Diego comic con. Can't tell you the year. But it was him his wife and Moisher, bodyguards inner circle! My favorite moment in my life.
Kevin Smith is one of my top 25 favorite directors of all time. Even his lemons i have a few parts I like and are amused when watching. He is someone I root for always
Ive been waiting for Kev to break down his stuff on GQ since they started doing this! Gonna watch The 4 30 movie tonight! Ill never forget the first time I watched Clerks. Thank you for inspiring us Kev ❤
Kevin has a way with words and cinema. Not everyone likes him but irdc, I love him lol. His words speak volumes and he just has a way with writing and speaking that a lot of directors/actors don't have.
Kevin is such a hero. Ever time this guy shows up he's just dropping healthy life perspective in a world that's nothing more than poorly managed chaos. Cheers my guy.
I still love Chasing Amy, but I use it as a barometer for how much I've grown as a person. Back in college I strongly identified with Holden, and felt like I was going through a lot of similar experiences. Today, I absolutely loathe that character, and want to grab him and shake him every time he open his mouth or makes a decision...
I bet this video was originally 5 hours long.
At cons, he only has 3-4 questions, each one takes 20 minutes to answer.
If an hour of it was dedicated to talking about George Carlin, I want to hear it.
I'm appalled it's not blank.
I wish. I could listen to him tell stories forever
I would LOVE that! ❤️🇨🇦
The fact that Stan Lee was reading the script for "Mallrats" in Captain Marvel for his final ever cameo was the most heartwarming and heartbreaking thing I've ever seen.
That was not his final cameo 😂
And he asked to be reading that, which was awesome
It was a special cameo, a thank you to Kevin for putting him in the movies, I smiled when I saw him reading the script, that’s a major back to the well moment.
Yep amazing
@ARC117Studios they were filming them in bulk in front of a green screen because of his health, so it might have been the last one he filmed even if it's not his last appearance.
I think I love hearing Kevin Smith talk almost as much as he likes talking.
What is the world record for continuous talking?
I wonder how much they had to cut...prolly like 2 hours hahahaa
That’s the Stockholm syndrome setting in.
Sometimes I like listening to him more than watching some of his movies
He's a better vocal storyteller than a movie maker
Smith talking about Rickman makes my heart melt, what a pair.
Same with Carlin. The love that he held for these people is so apparent.
The entire part where he's reenacting the conversation with George Carlin is gold.❤ Can't believe he's held back that little story
I've heard it somewhere, I don't think he can keep anything back 😂
@@Magooch86true its deff be on one of his many podcast episodes

I am not the greatest fan of Kevin Smith’s filmography, but I was hanging on the man’s lips for the entirety of this video. What a storyteller.
He’s a great storyteller. Both as film maker, nah he earned “auteur”. And as a public speaker.
You should watch his q&a "stand up" specials, they are basically more of this just on stage with an audience asking stuff
Films aren’t stories?
@@Ottophil yeah yeah you know what I meant
