I always got a “kick” out of the fact that Kurt Russell was the kid who kicked Elvis in the shin in ‘It Happend at the Worlds Fair’ and then ended up playing him in the first Elvis biopic and voicing him in Forrest Gump.
He omitted that his son Wyatt had previously played the younger version of his own character in Soldier (1998). This is one of the few videos like this that definitely needs a part 2. Kurt Russell is fascinating to listen to, and I'd like to hear him talk about more of his movies.

Kurt Russell is truly one of the greatest actors of his era and authentically sharp as a whip. He has always been refreshingly unpretentious and delivers great performances regardless of any particular production's budget. Many Disney Golden Age child actors had industry success, but few became iconic performers like Kurt Russell.
So many iconic roles. Snake Plissken. Wyatt Earp. Captain Ron. Jack Burton. MacReady. And many, many more. He's one of my favorite actors. Like, if I see a movie is starring Kurt Russell, I will watch it without knowing anymore.
You can see Kurt’s genuine nature and excitement about his job in the way he speaks and acts. Rare these days for someone to be themselves in every respect. Really great interview. Am glad you asked about the ending of The Thing as well.
KR is a Legend. Loved the part when he said that he is not interested in explore a iconic character, instead, make a new iconic characters. Hollywood needs to take some notes here.
only because it came out around the same time as E.T. which had way more marketing and without the internet thats really all you had to go by. When you have 2 aliem type movies most non horror lovers are gravitating towards E.T.
If the internet was back then it would have been those movies with like 25% critic score and 100% consumer score. It was a hard movie to rent. It was out or if you got one it was played out and poor quality.
I worked on 'Swing Shift' the film he and Goldie fell in love on. Took a chance once and walked into the makeup trailer knowing I could be fired to talk with him a bit. Was so down to earth, gracious guy, as he was with everyone always on set. Been too one of my favorite actors to this day. My best friends uncle Rob Botin created the special effects for The Thing. Now 'that' is the set I would have loved to be on. Kurt, famous since he was a kid 'Disney', yet still down to earth. They don't make them like that anymore.
Russell has always sat firmly in my top three actors of all time. This breakdown has cemented that even more. No controversies, no arrogance, just a guy doing his thing.
The definition of a working actor. He speaks confidently of his accomplishments but recognises he's a tool used in the creation of art, and not art incarnate. Real actors understand they're not the painting, but the brush. They understand the value in that.

Kurt's Santa is my favorite movie Santa of all time! He had such a young at heart, fun, sometimes stern, but always compassionate vibe about him. Tons of humor and a genuine twinkle in his eye! My favorite scene is when he's in jail with all of the "bad guys" and you knew they were probably all supposed to be on the naughty list but Santa loved them anyway and Kurt played that aspect of Santa brilliantly! I wish they would have given us more of what Kurt had to say about that role because it's my favorite role of his! I'm super glad to see he was so proud of it!
I've been saying it for years that Kurt has by far the biggest ranges as an actor in all of Hollywood. He crushes absolutely any role he's in no matter how diverse the character is. Would have loved to hear more about some of his other early non-Carpenter/Tarantino roles such as Captain Ron and Overboard and how he's able to transition to completely different film genres so effortlessly.

Unforgiven, Rio Lobo, Sons Of Katie Elder, El Dorado, Hateful Eight, original True Grit, either Magnificent 7, and yeah, Mad Max, anything Eastwood spaghetti, best westerns ever, just the first three were perfect movies.
I didn't like it when I first saw it, but then I saw Mario Van Peeble's "SOLO" and discovered a newfound appreciation for Russel's Soldier. Even though Soldier came out 2 years after SOLO, I saw Soldier first, and boy oh boy, was SOLO a brick of sh*t.
The Thing is a nearly perfect movie, and I saw Tombstone the day it came out (XMas Day). I love that he always dodges how much credit he really deserves for Tombstone. He seems very unusually chill and cool for someone who has essentially been in the movies his whole life. Just a super, iconic performer!
I’ve pinpointed The Thing as my favourite movie over the years. My parents love it and even my fiancée loves it, and it’s not her normal genre. A very groundbreaking film in that you never know whether the monster you see is human or not.

I totally love that movie and all the other Kurt Russell classics. He just plays those types of characters absolutely perfect. Legendary actor, Once you see him in a particular role you never forget it.
Kurt Russell in Death Proof is one of my favorite parts ever. Kurt is an actor's actor. He's a champ.
yeah but i like him so much as an actor, i was rooting for him in the fight with those women, i can;t boo Kurt russell ha ha
loved it when He broke the fourth wall in that film.. ❤
I always got a “kick” out of the fact that Kurt Russell was the kid who kicked Elvis in the shin in ‘It Happend at the Worlds Fair’ and then ended up playing him in the first Elvis biopic and voicing him in Forrest Gump.
And an Elvis impersonator in 3000 Miles form Graceland.
@@luismarioguerrerosanchez4747totally forgot about that 😂
As much as I love Kurt Russell, seeing his loyalty and admiration towards John Carpenter, I love him even more!
Breakdown, Backdraft, Stargate, Big Trouble Little China, Overboard, Captain Ron, Miracle, Unlawful Entry.
We need a Part 2!!!!
For sure but i get the impression he doesn't much enjoy it, definitely didn't really want to talk Marvel stuff
Absolutely wish he could’ve mentioned Captain Ron!
Dexter Reilly!!
Used Cars! 🚗
I second that motion! 👍🏻
I love his take on iconic characters and not bleeding them for money.
Hollywood should take note. But they won't
He has an integrity that most movie stars don't have.
@@reedsawyer5704 that's why he's one of the greats
He omitted that his son Wyatt had previously played the younger version of his own character in Soldier (1998). This is one of the few videos like this that definitely needs a part 2. Kurt Russell is fascinating to listen to, and I'd like to hear him talk about more of his movies.
His son Wyatt is playing his younger version in "Monarch: Legacy of monsters"
@@SuperFlawless2010 My point is that this is not the first time this has happened, as he states. Of course, he may be referring to both roles being major, whereas in Soldier, his younger role is a bit part, and it may explain why he overlooked it.
I'm just miffed they didn't get him to talk about Soldier at all. I think it's a pretty underappreciated movie.
@@LordBaktor It's one of the reasons I want a part 2. He had less than 100 lines of dialog in that movie, and was able to emote amazingly through it. Definitely underrated. And one of my favorites, Overboard, is apparently not iconic to others either.
@@throatwobblermangrove8510 Soldier & Stargate are my favorite movies that were not mentioned. I had no idea his son played his younger self in Soldier. I think it's cool to see them in Monarch together. Soldier & Sisu both had main characters who didn't have a lot of lines. Made a big impact on both movies.
Tombstone is my number 1 favorite movie. Has been for many years. Such a great cast, story, everything. Masterpiece.
USED CARS is one of my absolute favorite underrated / unknown Kurt Russell film's.
I wholeheartedly agree with you!
Now im going to wake up, and watch that sht. 😂 Thanks
I think that was the first movie he did after leaving Disney
Agreed!
Yes it's definitely underrated
Big Trouble in little China is a.classic and the Commentary on the DVD was fun as Kurt was laughing with John though out most of it lol.
That commentary was great!
Yes, I have the DVD. You can tell they're very comfortable with each other. Like Scorsese and DeNiro....or Tarantino and Samuel L. Jackson, or Kurasawa and Toshiro Mifune, etc.
@domarq
Like peanut butter and chocolate, or Crockett and Tubbs, or Tim Burton and Johnny Depp
true, same with the thing
I love his take on creating not redoing over and over the same
Not having a breakdown of Big Trouble, Captain Ron, or Soldier is downright criminal.
Amen.
Or vanilla sky
Overboard too
Soldier was a great movie.
Im so glad people remember Soldier, it’s an underrated movie
this interview made me love kurt russell even more
He gives great interview. He told a story on Seth about seeing the famous Phoenix Lights when he flew into the city in 97. Spooky
@@samanthab1923my favorite story is when he got Charles Bronson a birthday present and then Bronson got him a skateboard ! And Bronson was sure to tell everyone that this kid can skate wherever he wants!
Just bums me out watching these folks age. Want them to be around forever.
He’s a really cool guy in person too. He and Goldie are all class.
I could hear him talk about “The Thing” for hours it’s so cool to hear things about it
Kurt Russell is truly one of the greatest actors of his era and authentically sharp as a whip. He has always been refreshingly unpretentious and delivers great performances regardless of any particular production's budget. Many Disney Golden Age child actors had industry success, but few became iconic performers like Kurt Russell.
No “Overboard”?! That’s an underrated classic.
There's so many this needs a part 2
yup!!!!!@@Shoelessjoe78
There’s one scene in Overboard involving a ladder and Goldie Hawn that I remember very well..😃😃
I agree such a great movie!
So many iconic roles. Snake Plissken. Wyatt Earp. Captain Ron. Jack Burton. MacReady. And many, many more. He's one of my favorite actors. Like, if I see a movie is starring Kurt Russell, I will watch it without knowing anymore.
Totally agree. If Kurt Russell’s in it, I’ll watch it.
@@raymondbrolly18499 Your friends might get me in a rush, but not before I turn your head into a canoe, do you understand me?”
My sister and I were just talking about Captain Ron! We are both in our early 40s… We watched that vhs soooo many times as kids and teenagers.
Cpt. Ron is so great!!!
Fr
I really love how humble he seems about everything. Very open and very passionate his roles.
I'll never understand how The Thing bombed at the box office/reviews, this is one of (if not) the best monster movies of all time.
only because it came out around the same time as E.T. which had way more marketing and without the internet thats really all you had to go by. When you have 2 aliem type movies most non horror lovers are gravitating towards E.T.
If it came out now then it would savaged even more by the critics because of the all male cast. That’s a big no-no these days.
If the internet was back then it would have been those movies with like 25% critic score and 100% consumer score. It was a hard movie to rent. It was out or if you got one it was played out and poor quality.
It was so ahead of its time I don’t think people were ready for it
Bad timing.
You think he's arrogant? He seems pretty down to earth n humble. One of the nicer guys in Hollywood like Willem dafoe
He's a total superstar
@@JohnDoe-zo8wj There is almost nothing arrogant about this video and about Kurt himself. I think you are misinformed what arrogance means.
@@RMZ1989 I once met him in North Korea and he was very mean. I wanted to take a selfie with him but he took my phone and broke it. And then he started yelling at me in korean like crazy. Never meet your heroes.
Kurt Russell is such a badass in all of his movies. I was born in 94 and even I watched Big Trouble in Little China, he was BADASS.
Legendary movie which direly needs more recognition!
@@ilmarinen79 couldn’t agree more!
He is by far one of my favourite actors of all time, definitely in top 5 ,he's such a sincere person
Ever since I was a kid Kurt Russell was the definition of a movie star to me, he can do anything, so many iconic roles
The computer wore tennis shoes
I've been saying it for years that Kurt has by far the biggest ranges as an actor in all of Hollywood. He crushes absolutely any role he's in no matter how diverse the character is. Would have loved to hear more about some of his other early non-Carpenter/Tarantino roles such as Captain Ron and Overboard and how he's able to transition to completely different film genres so effortlessly.
I think about Captain Ron every other month!
Biggest range imo has Willem Dafoe
I was a kid and watched Kurt as Dexter Riley in the Walt Disney films, but he first impressed me as Elvis in the John Carpenter TV movie but really created a character in Rudy Russo in Used Cars!
He ain't lying about the most quotable lines in Tombstone!! It has some of the greatest lines to quote:
Wyatt: "well I'll be damed
Doc: you just may be...if you’re lucky
Love that movie!!
I'm your huckleberry.
Classic
Are you just going to stand there in bleed? Love that one as well.
I would argue Unforgiven is pretty quotable as well. My personal favorite.
"Jonny Ringo you look as if somebody walked over your grave"lol
The Thing still holds up to this day. Kurt is one of the all time greatest. These great actors will never come along again.
DITTO!! "THE THING" WAS CARPENTER'S MASTERPIECE.
I got the 4K version on Blu-Ray. They did an amazing job with the 4K remastered, holds up great!
Tombstone is, hands down, my all-time favorite Kurt Russel film. I am definitely one of those, decades later, that still quote its dialogue often.
I’m your huckleberry…that’s just my game
One of my favourite movies of all time!
Val Kilmer was in the zone in the 90’s…..the word “iconic” gets over used but in my mind he owns the character of Doc Holiday forever. No one can f with his performance
“I got two guns. One for each of ya.”
Why, Johnny Ringo, you look like somebody just walked over your grave.
I've seen the thing at least 50x still one of the greatest..still waiting for the sequel
Knew Kurt Russel as an actor, but after this, I’ll tell you something.. clearly a great dude to have dinner and a drink with, 100%
He still looks gorgeous, iconic and amazing. You guys forgot him in Overboard. That's iconic❤
True…that’s a fun flick
exactly, was gonna forward this to my wife, b/c he's 1 of her favs and Overboard, my goodness I think she's seen that like 20x and thats really saying something for a woman. They're not like us w/the over and over of most movies. Regardless, that was a fun and really heartwarming vid
Great movie!
One of the greatest and most charismatic actors of all time. Always a treat to see him show up in any movie and would love to hear him talk about every role he's had, no matter how small. Legend
Kurt played so many memorable characters and was in so many memorable movies it is really hard to believe. One of my favorite actors and a guy deserving of some type of lifetime award as mentioned below,
Genuinely surprised "Breakdown" wasn't included. That's such a great movie. Kurt Russell is such a legend!
Massively underrated movie. Nowhere near enough people have seen it.
Totally. Watched it for the first time a few months ago expecting it to be an average 90s action flick and bhoy did it surprise me. One of the best action films I've ever seen. The tension throughout that film.

BREAKDOWN
I love how proud Kurt Russell is of Tombstone, that film is awesome. Apparently George P. Cosmatos was a ghost director and Kurt was the real director, hearing him talk about the film makes me think that story is true.
Every interview i have ever seen with Kurt is the most genuine person i have seen as a hige actor. Just no pretension in his view of his career, and its always a treat to see.
70 yrs young, I grew up watching Kurt Russell, always getting the " Sixteen Magazine " if he was in it. He was a heart throb of my youth, and still is. 🇨🇦

i agree
Tombstone...came out when I was in college...instant classic all over my dorm, we quoted it for months! Hands down one of my favorite movies...
Better than 'Unforgiven'?
im your huckleberry
Wyatt I am rolling
In vino veritas
Tombstone and the bestest dvd twinpac ever Silverado/The Quick And The Dead goosebumps every time I watch them. Unforgiven, Rio Lobo, Sons Of Katie Elder, El Dorado, Hateful Eight, original True Grit, either Magnificent 7, and yeah, Mad Max, anything Eastwood spaghetti, best westerns ever, just the first three were perfect movies.
Soldier is his most underrated film in my opinion. I’ve loved him since the Fox and the Hound and his other Disney movies when I was a kid.
yep his Todd in Soldier is one of his best characters.
Yeah, he is awesome in that one!
So underappreciated because the movie got minimal budget for special effects, but it's seriously an amazing performance and a killer film.
Soldier IS a very underrated movie...different. one of my faves.
With age, his voice become even deeper and colourful. When he speaks, you pay attention.
I really loved his narrative about Tombstone. To date that is one of my all-time favorite westerns.
Captain Ron is straight up underrated.
Hilarious movie! "Hey boss"
Guerillas not gorillas!
The eye patch 😂
Agreed
They’ll get out of the way Boss! I learned that driving the Saratoga!
I’ve pinpointed The Thing as my favourite movie over the years. My parents love it and even my fiancée loves it, and it’s not her normal genre. A very groundbreaking film in that you never know whether the monster you see is human or not.
"Breakdown" & "Soldier" were two great flicks and two excellent underrated performances by him. In the 90s he did some amazing gems, also Backdraft was great
Breakdown doesn't get at all enough recognition, very Hitchcockian.
Soldier is an unappreciated masterpiece.
Soldier is also in the same universe as Alien and Blade Runner.
your men are obsolete
Executive Decision!!
Kurt Russel in "Breakdown" (1997) was an amazing movie
very underrated. His performance perfectly captured that helpless, anxious and desperate feeling.
That was by far one of his best films ever. 👍
I absolutely love Breakdown
All time classic
Never seen it. Only one I saw during that time that Kurt did was Soldier.
I'm glad Kurt has such fond memories for The Thing. It's one of my all time favourite films and my favourite Kurt Russell and Carpenter film.
ditto, could not agree more with your comment
If you have never seen The Thing, with Kurt, please watch it. It's a lecture on why people love practical effects and not cgi. And it's an amazing film. It terrifies me to this day. And I've seen it many times.
Just when i thought Kurt couldnt get any cooler, he provides an incredibly well thought out answer why he hasnt been engaged with video game or other efforts to capitalize on his iconic characters. THE BEST.
Soldier 1998. One of the most badass roles ever on film.
He was perfect.
Sucks he didn't talk about it
That movie is so underrated it's absurd. One of the best action movies ever.
I think he really shined on Gillagans island
