I live in Belton. The worst part of this case is that EVERYBODY knew he killed Kara. Not one person had any doubt. He confessed, had no alibi, and violated the PPO. He was able to kill 2 women before the Belton Police decided to maybe do something about it. The most heartbreaking part of this story, in my opinion, is that Kara's mom paid her cellphone bill the whole time she was missing in case she would ever call. She never called.

This happened in my hometown of Belton, and it was infuriating because we all knew Yust did it but the police did absolutely nothing. I actually worked at the place Jessica used to work at and I worked with her boyfriend and it was heartbreaking to hear him talk about Jessica and he would always say “I don’t know why she left with Kylr that night but it’s my biggest regret letting her”. I understand the sentiment but in reality it isn't so simple. The fact that there was no physical evidence, and at the time, not even a body- that speaks volumes for the decisions that the Belton law enforcement made. You want to be sure before trying to arrest and convict a person on such an important case. Could they have taken the witnesses' accusations more seriously? Absolutely. Should they have, legally speaking? I'm not so sure. You have people who falsely claim to be responsible for a number of atrocities, and I'm sure, have many more who claim someone they know has claimed that responsibility. No body, no proof- just heresay. I think ppl should give a bit more slack to the police involved is my point. They're playing chess, not checkers, and hindsight is 20/20.

Most of the time, (sadly not always) convictions are secured by removing reasonable doubt from the jury. This guy had that in spades- all he had were, at the time, words. Even when admitting to a crime you have to display some strong af inside knowledge or back up something they already have on the case. I think their hands were tied tbh. Sad but true.

What does where he put the body have to do with it? First degree means a murder was pre-planned. For example, if a killer brought a knife and tape and waited in the dark to ambush their victim. Second degree is for spontaneous crimes. From the information we got from the video, this seems like one of those. He saw an opportunity to feed his sick desires and he took it. I agree that he should have gotten a worse sentence (at least life in prison without the possibility of parole), and personally, I don't understand why second-degree murders have a lesser sentence to begin with, just because someone murders another person on an impulse rather than planning it that doesn't make the victim any less dead, but that's beside the point. From the video, there doesn't seem to be any evidence that he went to the party with the intent to kill Jessica, therefor the murder was second-degree.

While I prefer remorse over nothing a remorseful person would accept the due punishment, and I think once you are convicted of first or second degree murder life in prison is the appropriate punishment. He killed one of my closest girl friends' beloved cat while she was living with a guy who was "friends" with Kylr. Even his friend had to admit that Kylr was nuts when they found the dead cat and upon confrontation, Kylr said he did it because he thought it was just hilarious to watch animals die. He was always lighting animals on fire and swinging them around by their tails. He killed helpless animals and started fires for shits and giggles. I have several people that I care about who met him and immediately got goosebumps the second they looked into his dead eyes. Their intuition spoke to them and they are alive because of it. He bragged openly at parties about murdering Kara to so many people, always thinking he was smarter than anyone in the room. I can't believe the genius plan to blame his brother (who committed suicide, and couldn't defend himself) for these murders didn't work. Have fun in your retirement home, Kylr - believe me when I say, no one will miss you. I just wish someone would have sat down with Jessica and warned her or she'd still be alive today. At least the families now have some peace. I do feel bad for his Grandpa, this is a situation where no one comes out a winner. I'm glad I never have to think about him being out there in society ever again. Healing vibes to everyone who was affected by this creep.

Even with skeletal remains (finally, and I followed thiese cases for years), the jury gave him a slap on the wrist for Kara's murder -- 10 years for manslaughter. However, his looks have nothing to do with the police not investigating his _obvious_ first murder. In many cases, its not what the actual offense was, but what can be proven in court with as little risk as possible AND what a jury will likely convict on. This is extremely important in that if, as a prosecutor, you could not prove ALL elements of a specific crime - e.g. First Degree Murder, then a defense attorney would have no issue in explaining to the jury that the elements to said crime were ultimately unproven and as such, they should not convict. Many times, they don’t. Plus, prosecutors understandably want to win.
