I was always blown away by the video - the mood, the editing, the little touches. Only recently I've learned it was directed by the mighty David Fincher. We need more music videos from him.

I didn’t know it at the time but I was very fortunate to see Perfect Circle open for NIN on their Fragile tour. I knew about Tool but wasn’t a huge fan. I immediately went out and bought Mer de Noms and have been a fan ever since.
I think this is easily one of the best songs of all time. There's nothing bad about it imo. From start to finish I get goosebumps and I feel so energized listening to it, but I also feel a lot of the deepness of the lyrics and I can at least slightly relate to how Maynard feels/felt in regards to the lyrics. I should leave it at that before I reveal too much.
The videographer was none other than David Fincher.
You'll also be happy to know Paz (the bassist here) can also play violin :)

Josh Freese plays drums on this. He played on Suicidal Tendencies ‘Art of rebellion’ album when he was like 17!!! “Gotta kill Capt stupid “ would be a great one to do off that record. 🤘

I remember the first time I heard this song (was the music video actually) back in 2000 or whenever it came out, I saw the bald guitarist and the chick playing bass and my brain immediately thought "smashing pumpkins", so I stopped paying attention. Then I heard the voice and suddenly remembered that Maynard had a new band. So, once it was over, I went out and bought the CD.
Those drums are pretty crispy Mcnugs.
these dudes seem ultra upbeat.
I know that there is a lot of enjoyment in nuanced, shrouded, esoteric lyrics where you have to 'find your own meaning' or have a degree to discern what a song is about. But when you get someone like Maynard just saying it straight, no sugar coating just - Fuck your god, he did this - it's so cathartic and hard-hitting. This is probably my favorite APC song.

3:18 What might not be as obvious is that Maynard is kind of disappointed in his mother for being such a devout religious person (idk if she was Christian or Catholic) despite her condition and that her condition wasn't getting better over time (while she was still praying and all that jazz). It wasn't just the pain of him watching his mother be in that condition as a result of the stroke. The lyric "He did it all for you!" is said and a kind of snarky and sarcastic way, but I think I might be forgetting what he really meant by that lyric.

Maynard's mother; Judith, suffered a stroke and she was a very loyal Christian. After her stroke she even became more loyal to God. She was bound to a wheelchair and Maynard could not understand why one of God's most faithful followers should suffer this much. The book of Job comes to mind. Maynard's mother died in 2003, at the age of 59, due to complications from an aneurysm. Following her death, he scattered her ashes across one of his vineyards, and later named one of his wines after her, honoring her memory with his Cabernet Sauvignon "Nagual del Judith". He wrote this song in frustration.. This is what music is all about. Making songs of your personal experiences..
From my understanding this is the only song on the album that has swearing in it.
This is one of the very few times you'll ever see Paz wearing any shoes at all. It's rumored she drove many an organizer into fits because she plays barefoot, liability be damned.
My favorite part of the song? Oh, that's when "Fuck Your God" is splashed on the screen.

I despise this song because of 3 words,... Fyg. Live and let live, Maynard. He despises God because the ppl in his mother's church did a poor job of representing Christ thru- her sickness. He basically lost his mom at 12 cos she became bedridden and he had to go live with militant asshole Dad. He blames all this on the God he despises so much. He MUST believe. How do you hate what you don't believe exists? He blames the entire church for what 1 church did/didn't do. He blames God for letting his mom suffer for so long, and he still doesn't understand her unwaivering faith in Christ, even tho her church treated her poorly. You can't judge the whole tree cos it made a few bad apples. You have to only believe in Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son, and be filled, led and guided into ALL truth by the Holy Spirit of God that filled Christ and empowered him to rise from death with Victory in his hands. The Holy Spirit is POWER & the SOURCE of all power. Lucifer took that power and tried to twist it to serve his own desires. He will be destroyed. And so will everyone who refuses to put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Believers are gonna be taken out of this wicked, sinful world, then Hell will quickly arrive for everyone else. NOT a place you wanna be. If atheism is right and there's no God, then no harm for believing while I live BUT, IF there IS a God (there IS), those who don't believe there is will be cursed to Hell in the end, all because they refused to believe in Christ. It's a sad, sad, sad, sad, sad world 😢
