  • This video will discuss my likes, and dislikes of the Icom IC-7610, from the perspective of an IC-756PROIII owner who just upgraded to the 7610. The comments I make are directed more at the features of the radio, versus the performance. I try to be fair and objective with both praise and criticism. I hope this video will help and inform those interested in it. I also hope Icom will consider some of my suggestions. Thank you for watching.

    GREAT DEMO ! Thanks for taking the time to do it. I learned a lot about the radio from your video.
    I can see how the CW jack is in the way of the audio controls. Get a 90 degree jack to free that area up. I don't like the idea of the two audio knobs being on the left hand side of the radio. I'd also like to see the mouse control more than just the pan adapter. But the mouse can't do anything on my TS 990S so Icom still wins in that area, even with its limitation. I also like the keyboard being able to access the memory send commands.
    Impressive that the 7610 heard a weak signal that your older Icom did not hear. That says a lot !
    Again, "Well Done !"

    External keying with a keyboard has been an option with the 7000 series - 7600/7800 or with an external key pad as described in the manuals or the old i-Mate key pads.

    Can you tune both receivers (vfo a and vfo b) on the same band and hear one on the left hear and the other on the right ear? It would be useful in order to listen to AM, more exactly both the lsb and usb.

    • @SuburbanDXing

      Yes. The headphones can do that. You can have MAIN ("vfo a") in one ear and SUB ("vfo b") in the other ear. I cover this in a video found here: ua-cam.com/video/FdmhGSeh1k0/v-deo.html

    How loud is the T/R relay on the Icom 7610 radio? I used to use a Kenwood TS-940 using AMTOR ARQ and full break-in CW decades ago. The T/R relay is very quiet in the Kenwood TS-940. I have also used a Kenwood TS-430, and the T/R relay is very loud, so using AMTOR ARQ and full break in CW would not be acceptable with the loud T/R relay. How loud is the T/R relay in the Icom 7610 radio?

    Nice work. Loving my 7610 (I too was a 756 PRO owner). Concerning spectrum scope, I'm wondering if you saw "setting reference level" on p. 38? 73, David, N2EIO

    • @SuburbanDXing
      @SuburbanDXing  6 років тому

      Hello David. I tried the reference level (and show that briefly in one or two of my other videos) and it didn't really do much for me. The signals are still too small for my liking. However, I recently saw a video showing the scope on the IC-7851, and it looked the same, so Icom will probably tell me to go pound dirt. :-) :-) Thank you for your comment, enjoy your 7610, and 73! de WX0V

    A very good balanced view. I have had my 7610 for a couple of weeks and I agree with your likes and dislikes, mine are similar. I HATE the poor mouse operation but I love the Fixed version of the bandscope display. Not being able to adjust the gain of the spectrum display is disappointing and the Mode switching is buggy. Try going to DATA mode then back to SSB ;-)

    • @SuburbanDXing
      @SuburbanDXing  5 років тому

      Hello Andrew. Thank you for your feedback. Yes! The DATA to SSB deal is sucky. That's something that a revised version of this video would talk about. One thing I would change here is my opinion of the bandscope, but I did a "mea-culpa" video of that (also on my channel). Again, thank you for your comments, and 73! de WX0V

    You dont need a mode button: Band buttons have 3 memories each:
    - Press it once, set it to CW
    - Press it another time and set it to SSB
    Now if you want to switch between modes, use the band button! I think it's quite clever the way it's done ;)

    • @SuburbanDXing
      @SuburbanDXing  6 років тому +1

      Hi Jonathan,
      Thank you for your comment.
      I use and enjoy the Band-Stacking function of both my PROIII and IC-7610; I even mention it in this video. I have one for CW, one for RTTY, and one for SSB for each band. If I am on the SSB selection, and I need to tune, I then have to switch the mode. That's where a physical mode button would have been nice. To be fair, I am being picky, but it's not going to change. :-)

      That IS interesting! When I purchased my IC-7610, I was told that Icom would be adding an external monitor touch-screen feature. That has not happened yet but maybe it will? You hit the nail on the head when you said the Meter in the 7610 is a HUGE improvement over the 7600. I have the latter rig and yes, the Meter is mickey-mouse compared to even the analog one on the Pro-Series. For the price of a 7600, ICOM could have done a much better job on the Meter, because as you say 'I have to look at it.' Good review of your Likes and Dis-Likes.

    mode control can occur with software. I use n1mm+ for my Icom rigs - I type into the callsign field USB or CW or RTTY and the radio mode switches automatically

    • @SuburbanDXing
      @SuburbanDXing  6 років тому

      I'll need to look into that. I am used to the PROIII's mode buttons easily accessible at the bottom. If I went to say, 20m SSB, and found someone I wanted to work, but needed to tune my antenna, it was handy to have that mode button right there. The mode is on the screen for the IC-7610 (rather small and no tactile feel of a physical button), but so is yet another fingerprint when I touch it. :-) Thank you and 73 de WX0V

    I’ve ask this question on different channels, but never received a satisfactory answer. If you don’t require 2 receivers, is it worth updating from the 7300 to the 7610?

    • @SuburbanDXing
      @SuburbanDXing  5 років тому +2

      Valid question, however, it is relative to the person using it, and what their needs are. In my case, I chose the 7610 over the 7300 because of the much larger band scope, 2 antenna inputs, 2 receivers, larger screen, and other features. Certain areas of performance of the 7610 is better than the 7300 (Icom shows this right on their web site) but I'm not sure those are all that valid in the real world. I choose the 7610 over the 7300 for the same reason I would take an SDR version of the 7851 (which does not exist yet) over a 7610. However, it all depends on YOU. What do YOU want the radio to do? If you are a hard-core DXer like I am, you will likely want the extras the 7610 has. If not, the 7300 is a wonderful choice, and is a far better value than the 7610 (in my opinion). I hope this answers your question. If not...well...at least I tried. :-) Thanks for your comment and 73! de WX0V

    • @Markinpuff
      @Markinpuff 5 років тому

      WX0V Yes, you did. Many aspects of the 7610 appeal to me. If it’s any better than the 7300, then I’m sure it justifies the upgrade. I enjoy this radio more over my Icom 9100 and Yaesu 5000mp. It’s much more interactive/intuitive. Which apparently makes a big difference..

    I have been looking at various SDR rigs in anticipation of a new purchase. There are some nice offerings available in the market with Flex, Apache Labs, etc, but I do not want to be wed to a computer in order to use the radio. As a current Pro III user, the learning curve transitioning to the 7610 appears to be an easy one, so I am likely headed in that direction. Your video is very helpful in the decisioning process. Thanks for your work on this. de K3WR

      Thank you for your post. Also see some of my new videos and my "Mea Culpa" on the band scope (which I now love). If you get a 7610 (and I agree with your thinking; tethering to a computer was not attractive to me), be sure to update the firmware to Version 1.06 (if the radio isn't already there). It has (thus far) solved many of the issues we were having. Enjoy your radio purchase decision process, and have fun. 73! de WX0V

      Regarding your other question, the IC-7610 will change the auto-tuner based on the primary/transmitting VFO QRG. So if that is on 80m, and your second VFO is on 20m for RX, the tuner will still stay on 80m (unless you go split, and use the second VFO for TX). Hope that helps...73!

I'm an old guy who thought that black on silver-v- black on white was a big difference of choice back in the 60's. Can you “auto tune” both receivers using a single antenna?

    • @SuburbanDXing
      @SuburbanDXing  5 років тому

      The IC-7610's internal tuner does auto-tune via a transmit cycle until it reaches a solution for the given QRG. Then it will remember it for the next time you're there. This would apply to both VFO's, although it's normally used during transmit. Hope that answers your question. 73! de WX0V

    • @HamRadioLiveShow
      @HamRadioLiveShow 5 років тому

      Got it. My question is though, hypothetically, let’s say you’re working with both receivers. One receivers at 20 m at say 14.233 the other receiver at 40m at say 7.159. If you hadn’t already tuned to those two frequencies... could you tune BOTH at the same time?
      Btw: I also LOVE the SWR meters on your radio! Man, how I wish ICOM would update my 7300 to give me that kind of meter. It just “looks right.” I’ve called ICOM and asked them if they can update the radio to have it give that kind of meter because it really looks “right.“ They said it’s a screen issue because it’s a smaller screen. I told them “well you guys are the masters making the screens look good… Do what you can.“
      I really like your videos a lot. Very well laid out and very concise. Plus you don’t actually like you’re some kind of a “star“ at being on UA-cam. I’ve seen others act that way and to me it’s pathetic. Keep up the good work my friend!

      This message got marked as "spam" so it wasn't posted. I have cleared it, so here it is. The IC-7610 will only tune to the transmitting QRG. So if you tune for say 20m, and then take your second VFO to 80m, it will still think you are on 20m (unless you go split, in which case, the second VFO/receiver becomes the TX VFO).
      Yes. The meters on the IC-7610 are pretty cool. I think Icom is right; the screen on the IC-7300 is too small for them.

    You have had the 7610 for just about a year. I wonder if you have become more accustom to the radio layout? What is for sure, the new line of RF Direct to DIGITAL have a few differences. As far as the Spectrum Scope's lack of vertical signal height, this is easy to explain.
    These new radios do not have any analog circuits in them. As such, the amount of vertical sensitivity is not linear. These signal peaks are made in the digital domain, and that is why the receiver is so quiet. High gain circuits mean noise. The smaller display signals bothered me too, but decided to accept those shrunken peaks. After all, we can now enjoy quieter noise floors, while ICOM designs the next radio we just have to buy -- HI HI

    I have the funds to buy this model of transceiver, but its cost is higher than the amount that my bank will allow me to spend in one day.

      most likely at the cost of mobility. Yeasu's offering relies on mains power for the 200W output. I think the reason for this is the finals run at much higher voltages than typical mobile setups. For fixed shack use this may be an advantage but again in the case of a power failure you may be out of luck, it also somewhat complicates adding a linear amplifier for which 200W is typically far too much drive particularly if you often run in amp bypass for nearby stations without constant power level adjustment ALC not withstanding. this is particularly relevant to LDMOS amps where drive to full output cab n be in the sub 10's of watts.

    HDMI will only make the radio even more expensive because of royalties Icom would have to pay, DVI to HDMI cable is super cheap and it works, no need for HDMI... DVI is fine, just get a simple adapter and you'll have HDMI output.

      @@SuburbanDXing exactly, DVI is the same as HDMI without sound, if you need a HDMI because you do not have a monitor with DVI, it is quite cheap to get a DVI to HDMI cable, it will work but without sound. I once had a nVidia videocard that had DVI where you could inject digital audio sound by plugging spdif header on the videocard to the motherboard and it DID pass audio on DVI with a DVI to HDMI cable so that radio being digital, there would even be a way to inject digital audio on the DVI cable ! 73

      99% of HDMI cables have no retention locking mechanism, but DVI does. A slight pull will unplug a HDMI cable. Also, DVI can carry both analog (so called VGA) signal and signal video signals. HDMI can't. So the connector can potentially work with both "VGA" monitors and DVI / HDMI inputs, making it 3 x more compatible than an HDMI connector.

  • @nine7295
    @nine7295 2 роки тому

    Advantage of DVI :
    Can do analog signal (DVI-A)
    Can do digital signal (DVI-D)
    Can connect to both HDMI input and DVI input with digital signal, thus, can connect to 3 different kinds on the input of monitors, the most flexible.
    It has 2 screws to secure the connector, while HDMI, 99% of them don't, you have to go industrial level to get that.
    Advantage of HDMI:
    Can carry audio signal including surround sound, but do you really need this in this context?
    Plus, as said by another comment here, you can use a DVI to HDMI cable or adapter to connect to an HDMI input, and it's very cheap and easy to find.
    HDMI connector is smaller
    HDMI can carry higher bandwidth, but do you really need this?
    HDMI is a home entertainment standard first and foremost.
    DVI is a standard from the PC industry.
    Which really begs the question why you prefer HDMI here, for a design of a desktop ham radio, when connector retention might be more important than its other advantages.
    And I bet you didn't know that DVI is actually compatible with HDMI as far as the video signal goes.

    • @SuburbanDXing
      @SuburbanDXing  2 роки тому

      The preference for HDMI was based on convenience; most computer monitors being sold in late 2017 did not have DVI. Almost all of them had HDMI. All moot to me now, as I find myself rarely using the external monitor. 73 de WX0V

    I have one and do not like the cheap feel of the knobs on it. That’s one of my big dislikes about this radio, being a machinst and mechanical engineer I just can’t for the life of me why the engineers at Icom would use such cheap controls on a beautiful radio. I’ve owned many high end radios since I became a ham in 1977 and have seen a lot of changes in the industry more good than bad. As far as I’m concerned I’m just disappointed with Icom using such cheap hardware, I’m leaning towards selling mine and going to another rig, durability wise I just don’t think these rigs will go the distance like a well built superheterodyne rigs, i.e. Kenwood 990s Yaesu FTDX5000mp , etc. I’m retired and just bought this rig and was hoping to use it for the next 15-20 years but I think it’s lifespan will not go that distance, so if I decide to keep it I hope it proves me wrong. This is just my opinion and we know everyone has one! 73.

      If you don't need 2 receivers, the TS890 has a great build. Unfortunately I've not been able to try the 7610, but the scope on the TS890 is much better than the one on the 7300- in part because it's just larger, but once you figure it out the scope on the 890 it is awesome. I also like the small waveform it shows for bandpass- especially on CW. The scope on the 7610 looks very good to me. These all have their pluses and minuses.
