  • Since coming into the league, Connor Bedard has undoubtably impressed. He’s shown us why he was the number one pick, why he’s a generational talent. It took some time to break in, but the kid is the real deal. But at 18, he's still jus that. A kid. He’s certainly on the smaller side and there has been an undertone of worry that its just a matter of time before he takes a hit that really leaves him shaken up and tonight, in what was a chippy game between the Devils and Blackhawks, that's exactly what happened. Connor Bedard took a hit from Smith and immediately went off the ice holding his jaw. The game went into absolute chaos from there on out as you may expect in what was a fun one. Notably, Jack Hughes ALSO went down the tunnel with an apparent injury late in the game as you really hate to see two of the leagues brightest young stars injured in the same game. I cover it all in todays NHL hockey video!

I hate that head contact happened but Smith didn't even move. Bedard just kinda skated into a wall.

Im a hawks fan and this just makes me respect Smith a lot. Totally clean hit, and he was willing to fight to "answer for it" anyway.

Wish all the best to Bedard, but you have to admit that was a good clean hit. not really foul play, just rough hockey.

  • @mattwhelan13

that's a beautiful hit right there, but good to see Bedard's teammates stick up for him as he's so small and so young. Didn't get out of hand, no intent to seriously injury but still plenty of passion shown and some gorgeous goals to top it off. Exactly how I like my hockey

Great hit. Bedard is an amazing talent but he needs the reminder that he’s playing in the NHL now; it’s not pond hockey. The NHL should always be a hard physical league, it’s part of what makes it so great.

  • @DevilsDood

I was at the game. I’m the most diehard devils fan ever, hit was clean, height difference awkward but I hope he’ll be okay

Hard lesson for Bedard, always have to keep your head up when playing in the NHL. The hit wasn't even bad.

  • @malanritz

Was a clean hit, part of the game. Kid's gotta learn to keep his head up and not try to be too fancy around D-men that know the right way to shut him down, which is exactly what that was. That's NHL hockey.

He got hurt because Bedard’s mom got with Corey Perry.

He's on the smaller side, he will adjust. Most forget it's a rarity to see teenagers in the NHL having any success, much less smaller guys. Just don't wanna see him get any concussion issues.

Based on his demeanor and appreciation for all aspects of this game, I feel Connor will say it was on him. A learning experience for how to better navigate the middle and a test of how strong his jaw is. This won't be the only time he's tested in his career. So, as long as the injury can be overcome, I believe Connor states he will be a stronger player as a result. Go Hawks!

Absolute electric game! Even though I’m a hawks fan and we lost, it was such an entertaining game to watch. The physicality was amazing. Hopefully we keep playing like that.

Honestly, I like this kind of rough match... But hoping no one gets injured...

  • @billkammermeier

This is 100% a textbox clean hit even by the current soft NHL standards. That might even be a clean in a non-checking league game, because Beddard ran into him and not the other way around. The guy is entitled to his space.

  • @jggallow01

Clean hit. I’d say the scariest thing about the collision is Bedard’s right skate. It swings around about a foot away from a Smiths upper body like a scythe.

  • @winkletown8828

I'm all for this brand of hockey, pending everyone comes away ok. That 80s and 90s style of grit is definitely welcome and appears as though Chicago needed this. They stepped up and showed us something. Good to see the Hawks have Bedard back. Unlike Crosby's early time in the league. Bedard should not have stated into the brick wall of a man though.

  • @slystar6418

This is MUCH better then just highlights! I love this!

  • @brad_lesh

IMO Bedard is genuinely performing insane for a 1st overall rookie.

  • @admirals818

Clean hit, but you can't even do that anymore without the other team getting their undies in a bunch. Unfortunate that Bedard was injured, but it's always good to see teams not afraid to touch top players. Respect to Smith and the Devils.

Nice analysis. Overall I haven’t been a fan of Smith this year and I hate to see Bedard get hurt, but as you noted this wasn’t a dirty play. A rough one for sure… and puts the Devils in a tired, banged up spot as they look to play Vancouver tonight. They haven’t done well in back-to-back games as it is this year, and they have many on their schedule.
