- With a new (and terrible-looking) Robin Hood movie upon us, we thought it was finally time to go back and look for sins in one of the most famous Robin Hood movies ever made, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Ugh.

I love him but he's not underrated. He's one of the most respected actors of all time. Deservedly. Ask anyone about him and they will more than likely praise him. So underrated is not really a term I'd use. He just picked his roles. Like Daniel Day Lewis

@@SovereignStatesman Did you see him in CBGB? One of his last roles. Played Hilly Krystal, the so-called 'Godfather of Punk'. Critics slated it but I liked it. Oddly enough Rupert Grint was in it. He also played a real life character, the drug-addled punk legend guitarist from The Dead Boys, Cheetah Chrome. I recommend it. Rickman can do the biz even putting on an east-coast American accent
Nicely Put I think when people say he was underrated, they mean by most major awards. He won a BAFTA for this movie, had iconic roles like Hans Gruber and Snape, and did many different genres but was never nominated for an Oscar.
I think you should have sinned the fact that Maid Marian went from being a cunning ninja in her introduction scene to a non-combative damsel in distress in the final battle.
Martin Houston I would also add 100 points for the “rape as comedic relief” scene.

In his entire reign he spent less then a year in England. It’s why I prefer John at least he stayed in this country.

All nobles spoke French. It was spoken at nearly every court in Europe, whether the kings were French, English, Dutch etc.
Alan Rickman was the only actor who knew he was in a comedy and it saved the film. He deserves -50 sins for his scenes, especially the 3 minute death scene.
Don't forget one sin off each for Morgan Freeman's and BRIAN BLESSED'S excellent performances.
YES, brilliant analysis. He absolutely killed it playing the Sheriff, and saved this otherwise mediocre film from complete failure.
Cannot stress how great Alan Rickman was. And Michael Wincott. And Morgan Freeman. Jesus, this movie wastes a wealth of talent. It's as if someone took that wealth and gave it to the poor...

Also, although CinemaSins likes to DING "All bad guys are rapists" - With King John it's an established and confirmed fact of history he would force himself on women, and may be a point of origin for the mythical Prima Noctem or King's right to claim the bridehead (again, a myth, but part of the critique of class privilege). Anyway, this John is closer to the history than almost any other character in this film (not that this is saying much).
Alan Rickman deserved 20 points taken off not just 1. His acting was the best thing about this movie.

Agreed, actually when Alan Rickman originally read the script he thought it was a parodied type of movie and decided to play the Sheriff as more of a comedic role. Pure brilliance.
My folks and I saw it at the theater when it first came out, and we were about to walk out it was so bad, then Alan Rickman showed up and we stayed.
At 2:48, I would note that being a “hooden man” means to wear clothing marking one as being distinguished. He isn’t saying Robin Hood is wearing a hood. He is saying Robin Hood is a noble.
This is my favourite Robin Hood film, no lie.
The only actor that saves this movie from absolute armageddon is the late Alan Rickman :P

10:16 Azeem's scabbard is split open on the concave side just at the throat to allow the sword to slide in/out. This was a common thing for flared, curved swords like falchions and the like. Watch the ambush scene when he counts 20 soldiers through his telescope and he has his sword on his back. You can see that the sword has shifted and part of the blade has fallen out and is exposed.
10:33 Don't forget the arms they would have captured from their ambushes.
Have you seen those warriors from Hammerfell? They have curved swords. Curved. Swords.
That wedding scene deserved a "mawwiage" reference in your audio outtakes....

10:23 The way sheats for curved swords such as this work is that the sheat is not a full sheat. The backseam is open to allow the sword to be drawn.
10:31 This scene is ridiculous but for a different reason than you think. England during the time this movie is set in had a tradition that was called "the sunday bow shot". Pretty much every farmer down to bonded farmers was expected to train bow shooting on sundays. This was a decree for the simple reason of having a large amount of bowmen at hand in case of war. And the english bowman absolutly put to shame the french crossbowmen during the english-french wars due to england not only using the english longbow which had a far greater reach than crossbows, but also because england having a whole damn lot of them. In conclusion, pretty much any of these farmers in the movie should already be passable bowmen.
Yeah, i love it when movies set in medieval times make a running gag out of "simple farm boys" not being able to shoot a bow.
let's not forget how disgusting, impractical, and completely made up Azeem's sword is, too. There is no historical sword that looks like that, and definitely not one from the Middle East when this is supposed to take place. But then there's the same problems with all of the armor and weapons and general realism and believability. Terrible.

10:44 You missed a sin for showing molten steel being cast in a mold in the medieval period. They didn't have the ability to make crucible steel in Europe until the 18th century. Wrought iron and steel were made by heating iron ore up to red hot and pounding it with hammers to work out the impurities - hence wrought (worked) iron. Steel was made by baking the wrought iron in a clay vessel full of charcoal to carbonize the surface. Cast iron was in use in the 15th century in Europe, but cast iron is too hard and brittle to make weapons (other than large cannons) from.

Even though there were major geographical inaccuracies, and it was based in medieval England but filled with American actors, it is still one of my most favourite films of all times.

This movie also deserves a sin for the fact that Costner was so intimidated by how great Alan Rickman was at stealing scenes that he made them cut several of Rickman's scenes.

Yep, that's apparently why the shortened 1991 theatrical cut exists: because Rickman was totally owning the movie and upstaging Costner, who wasn't amused as he was supposed to be the star. Costner was also the film's producer, and had the film edited against the director's will to reduce Rickman's role. We didn't get to see Reynolds' original cut until it debuted on DVD 12 years later, in 2003. I wouldn't watch the film any other way now; the more Rickman the better :)

I STILL think the worst sin came from Christian Slater singing "Look at him shiver" to the same tune as "Pop Goes the Weasel". Don't they have consultants for these types of screenplay mistakes?
To be fair, you have to recognise the scenery as well as know the basic geography to spot _just_ how badly diversionary a 'scenic route' it is...
But for those who do, it's indeed spectacularly bad: the south coast to the Midlands via the Scottish border. I think that's the most off-course you can go without actually leaving England.
At a rough calculation, it's travelling to somewhere around 150 miles away via a round trip of about _500_ miles. And the real kicker of course - all "by nightfall", no less, on foot!!
He goes from the Cliffs of Dover to Nottingham (63 hour walk today) via Hadrian’s Wall, and saying that he will be dining with his father by nightfall. I think not.

Technically, for an English king, Richard was Aquitainian (Aquitaine is in France) and probably didn't speak much English, if at all.
Oxnate He spoke 3 languages. None of them English.
And he never actually ruled in England. I think I have that right...better check Google.

There's an extended DVD release from 2004, that basically added on scenes that were cut out. Certain things were explained, like the relationship between the witch and the Sheriff (because that's really never explained at all). It also elaborates on the Celts, and their role in the story. If you haven't seen that version, it's worth watching at least, and no I'm not defending the film lol. I'm nostalgic for it but I know it has flaws.
The extended cut is awkward at times. Thankfully scenes were trimmed for the superior theatrical cut.

Brooks had fun with this. Prince goes to consult the person we assume is the witch and asks where he can find Hood. Immediately she begins an incantation throwing all sorts of weird things into a pot. He asks again and she responds."Go ask a witch, I'm just your cook.Here's your lunch." She also asks him to put in a word for her with the Sheriff as 'she so has the hots for him'. In her bedroom she has a cut out of the Sheriff with a smile on his face. After her comment, pan back to what is now a look of fear.

The battle of Endor line is doubly funny because the playset from Kenner for this scene was a repaint of the Endor playset from RotJ.

Robin travels to Nottingham via Hadrian's Wall, which is about 200+ miles north out of the way. Also all the common folk seem to have West Country accents despite the film being set in the Midlands.

I really enjoyed this movie. I guess I don't "dissect" everything. I NEVER hear anything bad about Alan Rickman. Yes, he was outstanding! I believe that MANY actors were intimidated by Rickman. A sin you missed: In the beginning of the film, during the part that features Robin, and Peter escaping from the dungeon; when Azeem is trying to convince Robin to free him, the scene clearly shows him with his hands bound together. But when the following scene shows Azeem hollering, "Christian!!" to get Robin's attention, his hands instead, are all of a sudden separated, and chained to the wall individually; upon which when Robin finally, and reluctantly decides to free him, in the immediately following scene, the camera clearly shows Azeem's hands bound together once again, as originally shown in the former part.
Definitely one of Jeremy’s most hilarious CinemaSins videos. I’m surprised the outtakes weren’t a lot longer! Lol! There could’ve been a lot more references to Men in Tights or Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
