I grew up in Wyoming hunting with a .280Rem. Handloaded with 160gr Nosler Partitions...and up to .270 pressures...it's a fine Elk round out to around 600yds. As I always say, it'll do anything a .270 will but 10gr heavier! I've taken everything from Antelope to large Elk with it and it's not let me down in 40 years of use. I've never felt "under" gunned with it no matter the situation.

Love my Bill Wiseman barreled M70 280. Many years ago I said I could probably finish out my hunting years with it. But where's the fun in that? I wouldn't hesitate to tackle brown bear using 175 gr Swift A-Frames. It's all about shot placement anyway. Thanks for the vid!

The 280 hits right in the sweet spot for a hunting round. I know people that hand load for it and it’s performance on game is very effective. It’s a shame Remington themselves where responsible for its poor sales. Here’s hoping the Internet can bring attention to it and maybe re-spark interest in it as it and the 6.5cm did for the original 6.5’s.

Absolutely love my .280. My dad had the standard caliber rifles and I chose to go with slightly different ones. He had the 25-06 and I love that cartridge too. My best buddy's brother introduced me to the .280. My Sako 75 Hunter is my favorite. I handload my ammo and it is nothing short of remarkable. My next acquisition will be the 7mm-08. Thanks for work you put into this video.

I hunted with .280 for over twenty years and had more than a few different rifles in that caliber. Transitioned to the Ackley version 5 years ago and haven’t looked back. Still love the .280 but the .280AI shines if you handload. I hunt whitetail in the SE USA and mostly 300yds. Recoil a bit more than mild. There is still a soft place in my heart and great memories with the .280. Thanks for video on overlooked cartridge

I think the 280 Remington Ackley improved is a home run. I think that is why it's a popular modification to the 280 Remington and a very good alternative to the 7mm rim mag. if you look at the reloading manuals to 280 AI is almost producing 7mm mag velocities with the same weight bullet with quite a bit less powder. I do actually like the 7-mm 08 also I think if you're practical and you're hunting within 300 yards the 7mm 08 is more than enough. I think you only need more if you're trying to shoot further. I personally don't see myself hunting beyond 300 yards. I'm looking at buying the Winchester model 70 super grade and I'm trying to decide between the classic 270 the 7mm 08 and the 280 Remington. I think they're all great so it's a hard decision. Thank you 👍

Like all the rest of comments below the 280 is an excellent cartridge. In 50+ yrs of hunting and having over 85 guns I’ve had 3 rifles in the 280. All were great guns. Missed my chance on a Model 70 Featherweight in 280 recently though. My best load was a 162gr Hornady using a hot load of IMR 4831 that chronographed at 2940fps. That load accounted for moose, bear elk and numerous whitetail and mule deer.

The 280 REM is flat, hits hard and has very reasonable recoil. Its very easy to reload for - IMR 4831 and a 140 gr Barnes ttsx. It’s a little more versatile than the 7mm-08 for open country.

A great cartridge but overshadowed on each slde with more popular cartridges with some advantages. The .270 can shoot flatter and the .30-06 which can handle factory loads from 150-220 grains. Although with a well constructed bullet, they are virtually interchangeable. In addition, the .308 has cheaper and better ammo selection. Thanks for sharing.

I bought a Remington Mountain Rifle 30 some years ago. Scoped it, put it in the Safe and have never fired it! This year I plan on deer hunting with it! I've loaded some 139 grain Hornady bullets and some Nosler 140 grain Partitions over 52.0 grains of H450. Velocity should be around 2650 fps. which is adequate for whitetail deer! I never load maximum listed loads! If needed or necessary, I buy factory loaded ammunition! Zero your rifle at 200 some yards for a dead on hold of +/- 3"!

If I was going to use that case and I wanted a 7mm I would defiantly go to the Ackley improved version. While the 7mm rem mag is good, it is not as efficient as the smaller 280AI. That is the case with smaller cases, they are more efficient than larger cases, however if you really want more power, the larger cases will provide that. I have three 7mm rem mags, one for hunting and two for benchrest compititions, I also have a 7mm 284 win which has a smaller case still, but it is very efficient. The 7mm rem mag gives 135fper second faster than the 284win, however the gap would widen if slower burning powder was used in the rem. the slow burning cannot be used in the 284 because the case is too small for that powder. In Australia the 284 win is the most popular 7mm round for long distance benchrest. With less powder than the 7mm rem mag, it does not get quite as hot and is less likely to let a shooter down in the last one or two shots, through being over hot. Benchrest shooting is different to hunting and F class shooting because the shooter has unlimited sighters over a ten minute period, in which case six or even seven shots are fired as sighters only, then the competion starts where another ten shots may be fired, this could mean between fifteen to seventeen shots fired. This is too many for a magnum on a hot day but may be ok on a cold day. The 284 win gets hot but as hot as a magnum, that is why it is so popular. I think the 280AI may be able to achieve the same results or better than the 284win, though I have never seen one at a match. F-class shooting allows only two sighter shots so there is less chance of overheating. Hunting of course is an entirely different game, except in unusual circumstances, not many shots are fired and barrel heating is not a problem.

I like the idea of the 280 Rem, it works but what made me go with it's AI brother was the chambering issues. A lot of gunsmiths have older 7MM Express/280 Rem chamberings that won't fit. I believe the change took place in the 1990's. I've had to have 2 rifles that needed more free bore to fit factory ammo. One was a Browning BAR. 280 Rem. Take a look at the Nosler Manual #4. 160g-162g bullet, Fed 210 primer, IMR 7828, 2930 fps, real world, not text pie in the sky! Look at Nosler's accuracy load and this is for bolt guns only. Manuals were adjusted for pumps and semi auto's.
Also, with the 180g Hornady ELD-M, R#17, ballistics at 2700 is fantastic to say the least. I form brass from Lapua 30/06 brass, and you can not kill the primer pockets on the Lapua brass. RWS makes 280 brass if you can find any

I love these comparisons; makes sense these calibers look similar on paper however the performance in the woods is a very difficult factor to quantify. I have all three calibers and hands nothing comes close to the 280 in knockdown power. In my opinion the 280 should be the biggest selling standard caliber of all time. However I do realize there are alot of opinions out there so I will use the term my two cents. I love shooting the belted boys however I do know in the woods and shooting around a hundred yards the 280 is a much better choice.MY advice if it carries any weight I tell my friends if you see a 280 for sale don't think just buy it. Remington completely blew it with this caliber no wonder they went out of business. Regards all.

Nothing wrong with the 280 rem, but it doesn't give me a reason to trade in my 7mm-08 or 30-06:)

Remington wanted the 280 for use in their 760 pump 742 auto. The problem was they jammed in the pump, they got stuck in chamber so Remington loaded the 280 a little lighter (less powder) than the Win 270. This was a big turn off to shooters and the 280 never got the credit it deserved.

I reload for the 280 3000 fps with 140gr fast and flat .

280 was always a hair better than the 30-06 and 270. Low pressure loading for Remington wood master automatic and 7mm Remington Magnum doomed it.
In a bolt action rifle loaded to pressures of a 270 it is probably the best efficient soft skin game cartridge of all time. I always called the 280 the thinking man's rifle cartridge.

I consider myself a thinking man and I shoot 270. Does it matter? Nope. Whatever you can shoot accurately is all that matters. Deer are actually pretty soft and easy to kill. Other big game not so much but how many people really hunt grizzlies? With the increasing scrutiny of firearms and ammunition, I definitely prefer popular calibers (I do not reload.) If the liberals continue to win elections, our rights will continually be eroded and having a common and popular caliber will be increasingly advantageous. Obviously I hope this doesn’t happen. Any caliber is going to have its fans but “better” is hard to prove. Most guys I know that shoot competitively use 308 but that is what they like. I like it as well, but is it “better” than my 270? Maybe, but for most uses, it’s splitting hairs
      Cheers

@@tomdavis3038 The deer will not know the difference and don't care what you think. I don't own a 280. Load ammo for it though. I do own the 270 and 06. Thinking about if I knew what know now I'd have just the 280 to split the difference. Always good to have military caliber firearms. That is why I have 9mm , 308, and 223 and good old 45acp. They not my favorite hunting rifles and pistol. They for Just In Case something hits the fan. I pray that never happens.

2900 for the 270 seems a bit optimistic.

With a 150 gr? Handloading it's pretty easy to get

@@ReloadingWeatherbyI find the max velocities in most manuals hard to achieve. I don't load the 270 but I'd be very happy with 2900 with a 150 out of my 280 with a 23 inch barrel. And that would be at least a full grain above the max listed by Nosler... Just my experience. maybe I have a slow barrel.

@bneaclab1 If you use the right powders it's not that hard. IMR 7828 SSC is great for velocity. I loaded up a load for my friend and he is getting 2950 FPS. And it's not a hot load

@@ReloadingWeatherby 53 of imr4350 behind a 160 accubond gives me 2800 in my 280. That is 'well' above max and below max listed velocity, or right around it. I've thought about your suggested powder, but I'm happy with my load at the end of the day as it is very accurate.

Don't waste the 7mm accubonds! For some reason Nosler has thrown 7mm bullets "to the dogs"!

The 280 is a good round but its lack of popularity along with the demise of the 264 win mag can be summed up with 3 words. 7MM REMINGTON MAGNUM. Anyone saying the 7mm mag is not the premier 284 is really fooling themselves. The 7mm rem mag like its twin the 7mm weatherby mag are the top of the heap in 7mm.There is the Mashburn magnum, which gives a bit more velocity but with more powder. The Sharp &Hart and the Achley Improved but all require more expensive brass which can be hard to come by. The Remington is about as perfect a balance IMO as one can get in 284. The 28 Nosler is just stupid with a box of 20 unfired brass going for around 3 bucks a case and that's IF YOU CAN FIND. IT.
