First! I’d take that 280 AI all day long.
Good choice!
I have hunted whitetail with a 270 and 308 for years. Both are great cartridges. I just ordered a 280 ackley barrel for my pro hunter. I think all 3 have merits.
Just my opinion but if i wanted somethin more than a 270 and was lookin at a 7mm bullet, id just go with ye olde 7mm rem mag. Lol. Tons of rifle and ammo choices and it still does better than the 280 AI, and that gap grows the higher you go up in bullet weight. You can really hot rod it with all that powder capacity
True
@@Bullets4Bucks tho if i didnt already own a 270 and 7mm RM, id buy a 280AI 😬
True statement but some of us older shooters shying away from magnum cartridges because of recoil on our wearing shoulders. That 280ai is a wonderful compromise
This ☝️
Great review, been wanting to score a 280 AI for some time now.
I'll take this over the 7 Rem Mag all day long!
Thank you
Like both. Either eliminates the need for 270win & 30-06.
270 win is the winner, it's perfect for deer, and I use a 300 Weatherby for anything larger
Great video. I’ve been waiting for the 280 AI debut for a while.
Thanks
Alter the case to hold more powder, load to a higher pressure. Shoot out of a longer bullet. Meaning higher velocity over standard 280 Remington and the 270 Winchester.
.280 AI is my favorite. I like the .270 also. I hand load and it’s amazing how much more you can squeeze out of loads. I enjoyed your video. The ballistics you can achieve with 140gr bullets with the Ackley are very impressive. Look forward to your next!
It is impressive
How would you compare the .280 AI recoil to a stout .308 loading?
The 270 Win is plenty adequate within fair chase guidelines. I have no need to change.
150% a fair point sir!
Love my 270wsm 😊
I shoot 280Ai and I love it!
It is slick
The 280ai can do a lot better than that. Im sending the 168 nosler long range at 3000 fps out of a 26 inch barrel with RL26. Its Kimber rifle with a Leupold vx5hd. 3 to 15. All up with gun scope sling bipod and 4 bullets. its 7.2 pounds. Its pretty dam good ballistics in a lightweight combo
Both look like fine big game cartridges (u.s)
Both will work
Good comparison. Thank you.
Obviously, as you said both are an excellent choice for any deer size game within reasonable ranges and proper shot placement. Many elk have been harvested with the 270 for many decades. It is surpring that the 280 AI didn't enjoy the popularity it should have for as many years. The 7mm Rem.Mag had to be the dominant force competing against it. I am a testimony to that. I have chosen the 7 Mag over other calibers since the mid 80s. Great info. Keep it up.
Thank you and great input
280ai is the replacement for 270win & less recoil the 7mag.
Its half marketing, half new kid on the block vs the old staple. The 270, like the 30-06 and .308, has been a staple for longer than most people have been alive. The .280 ai is relatively new, and simply doesn’t have the marketing push behind it that cartridges like the 6.8 western or the 6.5 creedmoor had, so unfortunately it just never got the exposer it deserves. Speaking of the devil, the 7 SAUM is better in every ballistic metric out there, yet due to a lack of marketing and age, the 7 SAUM is basically for hand loaders who buy custom rifles only. As a hand loader, I’d love a 7 SAUM someday 😓
The umm saum is the ballistic twin of the 280AI, in a short action, ans one less in the mag. I have one in the Remington model seven and of course hand load. It's a great round but it doesn't feed as slick as a 30-06 based cartridge. It's so fat that there's more pressure on it in the mag. Maybe a different rifle would feed better but not mine, it's ok but not slick like ice.
I just bought a 7mm rem mag which is a good cartridge, however I wish I had tried to get a 280 AI.
.280 (7mm) offer greater bullet weight selection especially if you handload.
Barnes X makes it a sure fire game taker.
The industry is making a lot more heavy .277" bullets. The 165gr nosler accubond long range, the 175gr sierra game king tipped, and even a 155gr barnes ttsx. I just bought a browning x bolt in .270win with a 1-7" twist rate. Times are changing for the grand old .270win!
Great video. I have a 270 AI and with the exception of the hole on the end i cant tell the difference between that and the 280AI
Thank you
Great video. I was just wondering what do you think is the best way to compare different chambering‘s if I’m just using ammunition is my basis and not reloading?
280ai, if nothing else you’re smart to choose 7mm vs .277 to get a much larger range of excellent bullets
I feel like the .280 AI is nearly perfect. .270 is no slouch.
Put a 129gr lrx bullet in the 270win and it's ballistics at 500yards (2366fps/1604ft-lbf) are very similar to the 280ai factory load.
Nice video mate I wanted something different to everyone around so when my 270win barrel wore out I got a new one and had it chambered it 270ai with 62.2gr adi2213sc (4831sc) I'm getting 3315fps with berger 130 shoots 1/2 or less if I do my part
Thank you
We're didyou get ahold of dies?
@@thejoshpope I'm using 280ai redding type s bushing die within appropriate bushing and I had 2.5mm trimmed off the bottom of the die to make it shorter. My gunsmith used a 25-06 ackley reamer to chamber then used a 270 neck reamer to finish the chamber that's why I had to get the die trimmed. Hope that answered your question champ
@@bradleytyrrell4417 huh, interesting, I'm very tempted to having mine rebarrelled in the same, I'm nervous about dies though
@@bradleytyrrell4417 what are you using for a seating die?
7 rem mag compared to 280 AI would be 👍. What are the differences in recoil and are you gaining anything from the magnum casing. To add more fuel to the fire how about throwing in the 6.8 western. I have heard all day long that it's better than the 7 rem mag, not sure if that's true.
I will have to look into that
280ai vs 6.8 western is exactly what I was gonna say. Well done Darryl!
Yes please do this comparison for us! Thank you
Ron Spomer did a comparison video on the 6.8 western, it’s not as awesome as people think.
7mm rem mag uses more powder to do the same thing as the ai. Vortex did a podcast on 7mms and the gains from a 7 rem mag over even a 7mm-08 wasn't impressive considering how much more powder and recoil you have with the 7RM. A big part of it really boils down to case design and the efficiency of that design. Hence why the 300wsm will do the same things as the 300win mag with less powder, and a shorter case.
@@jonputnam5745 I saw that podcast and love those guys. I have both those calibres and enjoy shooting the 7mm08. The big 7 isn't a gun I could shoot a lot at the range but the recoil isn't terrible, but not comfortable. I don't know if I would buy a 280 AI because ammo availability isn't great and it costs more than the 7rem mag. I have no doubt it's a great calibre but it could be a passing fad as well.
Both are excellent rifles but that 280 AI is one nasty critter killer..
Yes
280AI for the win!
I was disappointed that you didn’t compare performance at normal hunting distances. You chose to compare bullets of unequal weight and unequal ballistic coefficients. Why? You talked about cartridge shape, but I don’t remember you saying the Ackley Improved cartridge has greater powder capacity than either the 280 Remington or the 270 Winchester. Nor did you mention that the sharper shoulder angle of the Ackley Improved cartridge may increase efficiency, which is why most modern cartridges have much sharper shoulder angles than the good, old 270 Winchester. However, despite its age, few non-magnum cartridges, including the 280 Remington AI, can significantly out-perform it at normal hunting distances.
actually, at the hunting distance im most concerned about, 400 yards, with the bullets i would choose for either chambering, for elk, 200+ ft/lbs is significant to me. i can close the gap a little more with superformance, but then i have to have a bullet that i dont like for under 200 yards.
Great video. Would you be interested in a list of factory offerings and various cartridges that has ballistic information? I try to use it to compare and chambering‘s and it seems pretty useful
Ok
@@Bullets4Bucks how do I post it or send it?
I put together a 280AI carbon prefit on a 700 action that thing straight claps. Got a sako270 and have killed more than a few deer with it , but the 280AI is king.
280 AI is amazing, close to 7remag performance, less recoil, less powder reqd. Spomer and Von Benedikt write extensively about it. I have a Kimber Montana, shoots lights out. Also have 270, 7remag. I shoot the Kimber. 280 AI Has all of the new 7mm aerodynamic bullets vs 270.
Browning, Savage both make 280 AI rifles
Its sweet
I’ve been looking at the 7mm class of bullets and the .280 AI has my eye.
Its sweet
Savage makes an affordable offering and I have two scopes without a home and Weaver rings also... Hmmm....
Do you know what the expected barrel life is for this cartridge?
The answer is always Ackley 😂
I want a 270 Ackley improved. I know P. O. Ackley said there wouldn't be much improvement over a 270 winchester. However, Mr Ackley didn't have access to Reloader 26 when he said that....
Interesting
keep things practical and simple--270--wyoming guy
Yup
I got a 280 ai and a 28 nosler and i use the 280 ai more
Cool
280AI vs 270 ?? 280AI does it at any distance over the 270. I just bought a new Browning rifle. A Xbolt Hells Canyon Speed Long Range 280AI. Topped it with Leupold scope. A VX6 HD 4x24x52mm TMOA reticle. My new spring bear setup.
Just go with the 284 or the 30.06 . These videos are never compatible to every application. It's like first instance the 260 or 6.5 to the 270 . The 270 has killed deer since 1925 and. Still gets the job done .bullet placements people .
Have had many AI's and 280 is my favorite 243 ai is a close second
Its a great one
I blew the primer and stuck the case but I. Got 3429 out of a 130 grain Hornady Sst
Wow impressive
You can compare cartridges to absurdity. What is sufficient for the game that you're hunting in it's habitat?
problem with these rounds is finding it.....they can beat 270 performance but you can't find it in every hardware store.
The .280 AI is way better and rivals some lighter 7mm Rem Mag loads. Better B.C. and range of bullet weights.
Hornady ELDX in general sucks though.
Shot .5 moa out of a kimber mountain ascent
270 ai with a 1-7 twist carbon wrapped barrel, in a titanium action, with a carbon fiber stock…. That would be my next rifle build if I could
Sounds awesome!
Reality means that if you have good .270 Win keep it as a deer knows no difference what caliber it just got shot with
Same ole 😩 tired 😴 gimmicks. Forever chasing the legendary 270 win with newest greatest wonder. 🤔 Why? Simply the best. How bought them, 277 Furies!!!
My 280AI 150gr ELD-X @ 3,100 fps with ease

You do know Ackley did a 270 as well.
Graphs would have been nice.
280ai ammo availability is not the best. Even though it's a great round. Price of ammo is 2X of .270
Yeah it has gotten bad
280 Nosler Ackley improved won’t shoot out of a Remington 280 why is that
The ackley case is bigger

My 280 rem. 20" barrel shoots 165gr. Core Lock at 2880 faster than the AI. So there are variables that supprized me. That's why ballistics are written on paper and not stone.
Interesting
Is that from a chronograph? That's a lot of speed from a short barrel and a heavy bullet. That's 7 mag speeds.
@@jackvliet Hey ya I was up at the Fish and game and the fellow next to me had a chronograph. He was shooting a 280 Nosler. Anyways he said that's a winner. I had bought a box with 16 rounds and they might have been reloads. So that might explain those velocities.
बोर 280
Dumb comparison. Not in the same league.
