I have a .280 Remington in a Winchester model 70 featherweight, nice rifle ! Tack driver and I really don’t think the recoils is bad at all , it’s very manageable. I sold my 30-06 and .300 WSM and 7mm REM Mag ( don’t need the big magnums anymore) the .280 takes care of business from antelope to elk all the way out to 500 yards no problem.

I have a Ruger M77 in 280 and its my favorite rifle. Ive taken plenty of whitetail and blackbear with it. I love its flexibilty to be able to load down for varmits to Elk and eveything in between. But your right. getting ammo for it is getting harder.

280 in my opinion is the perfect all around cartridge . It's a 7mm Mag without the recoil. It's a 7mm'08 with more power. It's a flatter shooting 30-06 with less recoil, and so on and so on!

Every deer l have ever shot has dropped in its track. Thanks for sharing your experience with this cartridge. My forever rifle is the Remington 700 .280 caliber , most accurate rifle l have used. 280 IS the best all around cartridge. From varmints to big game . When loaded to equal pressure of 30-06 and 270 it beats them both. It is close to the 7mm magnum. More efficient . About maximum case capacity for bore size. Manageable recoil. A reloders dream compare to magnums. Can't say enough good about the 280. It's down side is that it is not common. Loaded with a 160gr bullet and you can hunt the world over except for the thick skin dangerous game.

I 1st read about the .280 back in junior high, 1967 . The article in one of the premier hunting magazine said it would surpass the 30-06 Springfield for popularity . It hasn't done so, but, I still have one . Same length case as the .270 Winchester and the 30-06 Springfield . Shoots 140 grain bullet . A real deer killer.

Unfortunately Remington dealt the .280 a bad hand ant conception. They under loaded the cartridge so it could be used in their auto and pump action rifles. By doing so people were unimpressed by the caliber. Then they remade it naming it the 7mm Remington Express. Surprise it didn't work. When they changed the name back to .280 Remington noone cared. Especially since the .270 Winchester out preforms it in low weights. The .280 really stats to shine at 150-162 Grains for bullet weight. That's where it out does it's main competition.

Getting Off The Tar, I have a Remington Model 700, and I have killed a rare Black Blazed 8 pointer, trophy Antelope,, and a nice Buck, the gun does kick some, but in my opinion not that bad, on deer hunts I put two rounds through it and it is great fun. On the range, you need to sight it in on a few shots, on many shoots the barrel can get hot on a 280, the gun was recommended to me by two men that I knew who killed the most deer. Would I want a recoil pad?

At least you're getting out there and trying 700 yrds, nice going. I've been looking into .280 Ackley Improved a lighter rifle than the 7mm Rem Mag with impressive numbers but not a lot of factory ammo. The .280 Ackley Improved specs better wind drift ability with a slightly heavier bullet (above 160gr) than the .280 Rem. Still, all cartridges perform well above my shooting ability. Again, nice going. Note: "Big Game Hunting Bog" youtube vid: '270 vs 280 vs 280 Ackley Improved vs 7mm Rem Mag' gives an excellent analysis of performance characteristics.

Buy both shoot both 270 win for deer 280 Rem for elk. A few old school trust and prefer 280 or 280 AI. It kick less than 30-06 shooter is a bit dramatic

Well 280 Rem and 280 AI was the intent of 7mm quality only second to 7mm Mag but less recoil chamber in a long action less bulk than 7mm mag and 300 Win Mag it's an excellent round according to my data fast furious fast take down and expansion of course bullet placement is always in question. 280 takes care of business

Nothing wrong with the 270 . I like it with the 130gr bullet and it's great accuracy. Would not trade a good shooting 270 for a 280 but if I was to buy just one rifle it would be a 280 just because it is a tad better. I would say the same about a good shooting 30-06.

I wanted to ask the same question. Being an Air Force guy myself, we have very specific instructions on when, where and for how long we may wear our uniforms. I'm sure the army is the same way. I don't know the army regs, so I guess I was just wondering.

It's a Flaig Custom Mauser. It is a medium weight barrel. I don't reload yet. I
need to learn how reload ammo. I want to reload special cartridges like this because it's a pain in the balls to find ammo. Trail boss powder! and 7-08. That's interesting! I would like to try Trail powder. 🤔
