I have had a 308 with a 22" barrel and now own a 7mm-08 Rem 20" since a year or two and the recoil is so gentle without sacrifing any takedown power. Using the 140gr accubond on roe deer and ferral hogs. Greetings from Germany!
I love my 7mm08 it’s a Remington model 700 Classic extremely accurate, Ive had great ethical performance on whitetail in pa and taking it on an elk hunt this year. Have full confidence in it
I love how the 7mm bullet performs. I built myself a .280 Rem. and my Granddaughter a 7mm-08. She loves it, when l did her stock l had to put purple accents on it. Definitely the first purple custom Mauser around this neck of the woods.

I hunt deer exclusively in Georgia, usually from an elevated stand with shots averaging from 25 yards to a rare 150 yards. I've taken whitetails with a .270, 30-06, 7mm-08, and even a 300 REM SAUM. In my honest opinion, nothing works better than the 7mm-08. I use a model 700 Mountain Rifle in stainless steel with Leupold scope. If I hit them right, they never go far with the 7mm-08. I use factory Hornady 139 grain light magnums with an SST tip. I'm not a handloader or ballistician, but I know I can do anything I want with that gun and that round. It's very light recoiling as well.
You remind me so much of an old farmer I worked for in 1964. He shot at Camp Perry in the 1920's. I became an incurable folllower of firearms ever after. I still miss him. You fill in quite nicely.

I love my .280. I have been having it sine 1995. I tried out a .270 for a while, but went back the the .280 as it just seems to always get a passthrough and deer seem to not go as far if they don't drop. My dad took his .280 on a Caribou hunt in Alaska and blew through everyone no problem with 160 grain Nosler Accubonds.

I have a Ruger M77 in the .280 Remington I bought (used) in late 1986 that was built between 1979 and 1981 and it's interesting because the heavy barrel had ".280/7mm Express Rem" stamped on it . The factory barrel was starting to show signs of wear so I replaced it in late 2010 with a stainless steel target barrel, I load/reload my own ammo and the rifle has always shot accurate groups. I also remember getting boxes of Remington once-fired cases in that caliber that had ".280/7mm Express" on the side of the boxes.

I had a 7mm RM several years ago. It was a whopper. Made some great shots with that gun. Now I have a 7X57 and a 280 Rem. The real beauty of the .284 class rounds is the bullet availability. I can hand load to make my 280 be a 30-06 or a 270. An amazing round. If anyone still shunns the 7X57, they should consider that it was the round that spawned the creation of the 30-06 when Teddy Roosevelt encountered it on San Juan hill. They found themselves fighting with inferior weapons in the 30-40 Kraig vs the 7mm Spanish Mauser. Then the US had to pay royalties following a lawsuit by Paul Mauser for copying his patents with the 1903 Springfield. So maybe we Americans should not be so hard on the little old 7X57. Which incidentally will do anything the 7-08 will do and then some.
@@thecontrarian1446 Are they twins, yes and no. The 7X57 will shoot a 150 gr bullet at 2800-2900 fps in modern rifles, i.e. Remington 700, Winchester 70. The 7mm -08 will launch that same bullet at 2700 fps. The 7mm-08 is a short action cartridge whereas the 7X57 is not. The 7x57 can use 30-06 cases , all one does is trim them 3/16 of a inch and reform them.
@@thecontrarian1446 Well it does but were the difference lies is if you use the heavier 160 gr bullets, the 7x57 pushes them faster than the 7mm-08 with a 160 is going 2600 fps, whereas the 7X57 will do it at mid 2700.

My hunting/trap shooting buddy died a few years ago, and he told his wife to give me his 7 x 57 Mauser before he died. About 6 months after his funeral I was talking to her, and their lazy, druggie, basement dwelling grandson had sold it for drug money. Along with all of his guns. Hard to believe the low point people can get to over drugs and entitlement attitudes of today's youth. And I will forever regret not ending up with Dave's Rifle. We hunted together all the time in New Hampshire, and one season we each got pretty a decent meat deer, Dave with his Mauser, and me with my Browning falling block 30.06, 3 days apart. (We were hunting a swamp that year, in the WAY back woods that nobody ventured near). Good memories.

Largely based on your recommendation I purchased a 7mm-08 a couple of years ago. I have never regretted that decision. Yesterday (3-30-18) I purchased a 1974 production M77 in 7mm Rem Mag. Now, to find a 280 Remington and the family will be complete.
Love the 7mms. Ive got 2- 7mm08s and one 7mm rem mag. I find the lil 08s do just as well out to about 400 then the mag out shoots it. But if I only could have one rifle for hunting it would be the 7mm08.
I prefer my 270 Win for shooting to 350 yards. Beyond that, I have to admit that my 7mm RMag with its 160 grain bullets is superior. Not by a lot, but enough that I'd choose the heavier, harder kicking magnum over the standard cartridge. Thing is, the 7mm will shoot out the barrel throat about 3X faster than the 270.
@@adamdrouin2295 he’s saying shoot out the barrel throat 3x faster … yeah I don’t know about all that , the .270 is somewhat a barrel burner as well( anything that pushes bullets in excess of 2,900- 3,000 ft/sec burns barrels rather quickly ) but the 7mm mag uses about twice the powder charge so I’d say it could potentially burn out the barrel throat 2X as fast .

i had a 7400 in 280, for better or worse i reloaded for it using nickel plated brass. I never seen fired brass be so hot that it changed colors. You had to wait some time before picking up the brass as it was hot enough to fry. I love the round, but wasnt sure about the rifle. The 708 is about all anyone would ever need for love and war
I used my dads .280 Rem my first few years deer hunting. Love that gun (R700) and its always been a tack driver even with some basic hunting loads off the shelf.
In my opinion, the 280 or 280Ackley with Hornady Precision Hunter ammo is an outstanding western deer cartridge. Look at velocities and energy out to 500 yards. It's hard to beat.

Great video, as always. A few years ago I was reading about the 7x57 Mauser, got inspired, and bought one of the Shot Show Winchester Featherweight models. I've hunted with the usual blend of 30-06, 30-30, 7mmRemMag, and 270Win. While all of these rounds are 100% effective when used correctly, the 7Remmie was my favorite. The 7Mauser has been a great deal of fun to use nowadays because the recoil is so mild compared to what I've shot over the years, in fact, my 10yr old daughter has claimed the Winchester as hers when she gets older. That puts me sort of back in the market for another rifle. Your remarks at the end of the presentation concerning using a reduced round for regular 300yd hunting and a full load heavier round for elk and up made sense and the old lightbulb popped on! I hadn't really thought about that dual usage from a 7RemMag but you made a great case for it! Thanks again for your thoughts on the matter!
Paul Simmons If you handload down in velocity, be sure to follow established loads and do not reduce below the listed minimum, as odd things can occur. Use a powder that uses the most volume for a given velocity. Thank you for watching, and God bless.

7mm-08 vs 7mm mag for deer and elk. I love your videos. I am completely new to rifles so I'm slowly learning the terminology. Recoil is my big thing, and I really want to spend the time perfecting my shot placement. My first hunting season with a bow I saw a bull elk and 326 yards (which I stocked down to 30), and a some really nice mule deer bucks anywhere from 80-374 yards. Still leaning towards the 7mm-08, but they go quick!

The use of cup and core bullets requires less speed and provides a cheaper bullet that is more accurate, destroys less meat and is less prone to bullet failure for being too close or too far away. They just work, and for less $/bullet. Also the 25yd/100fps of extra range, nope, ...I calculate it closer to 10yd/100fps. That's talking mpbr. Amen
Remington is known for it's bone-headed decisions... The 280/7mm Express, the 244/6mm Rem and more recently the 6.8SPC. All three great Cartridges that Remington's board room failed on!
Agreed. My household has a Mohawk 600 in 6mm and we've had several 280s. Both are excellent rounds that never failed to shoot accurately and deadly. It's unfortunate what happened to their potential, commercially speaking.
Had a Rem 700 Mountain rifle in .280 A great rifle/caliber. Would never have sold it if there were more bullet options available like the .270 and 30-06. I don't hand load yet and I like having lots of bullet options. I have a couple of nice .270s.

Good Video Sir, I live and Hunt in East Texas, Here We have a mixture of Forrest, Clear Cuts, and Farm land. In this area popular Deer Hunting Cartridges are usually the 30 30 Winchester, the .308 Winchester, and the 3006 Springfield. I have noticed however that West Texas Hunters that come here usually bring the .243 Winchester, the .270 Winchester, or the 7mm Remington Magnum. Another great video GB. After hunting with the 7mm mag the past 12 years, I'm still amazed by its performance on game. I mostly hunt pronghorn these days using 140 grain bullets and it's downright lethal. Comforting to know that anything inside of about 350 yards is meat in the freezer. And I have never seen any excessive meat damage.
Smoked plenty of elk with the .280 Remington 140 grain Accubond. Awesome round! NEVER had one get away. I don't hunt deer and there's no "woodland" hunting. Open sagebrush or Mountain timber and canyons. I've busted elk in the front and not had a problem. Good Montana mountain gun. Good video!
Elk Hunter Was always a great round, but it was the victim of the earlier 270's established popularity. Remington didn't help matters by loading it with 150 grain bullets that looked no different on paper to 30-06 and 150 grain 270 loads to the average person. If they loaded it with 140s like you, history may have been quite different. They made a number of poor boardroom choices with a number of rounds over the years that killed other cartridges, too.
I have shot a 270 for 30 years at deer and bear in Pa 1 500lb plus bear I love my 270 a lot of 500 yard shots but if I could do it over I would have a 280 only for more bullet choices for reloading

I wish one one the rifle manufacturers would build a 24” barreled 7x57 rifle. With modern powders and projectiles the 7X57 would an all around deer, antelope and elk cartridge. I think if one of the manufacturers took on the revitalization of this fantastic old cartridge they wouldn’t be able to keep up with the demand.
After watching this video last summer I went out and bought two rifles. The first a Tikka T3X Laminated stock and Stainless barrel in .270 and also a Tikka T3X with a synthetic stock and stainless barrel in 7mm-08. These two guns join my Remington 700BDL DM 7mm Rem Mag in the gun safe. Thank you for all the information you share with us!
I agree the 06 case is one of the best. I just had a 338-06 made & I'm really enjoying the load work up. I'll be using it on timber elk. What a joy to shoot.
I, too, am a fan of the venerable 30-06 cartridge. I'd love to see someone neck-down a 6.5mm bullet to fit in the case. I'm sure wildcatters have done it, but a factory rifle with factory ammo for it would be great. I'd say 7mm-06, too, except that it would probably be too-similar to the 7mm Rem-Mag to sell.

I agree ,Winchester new how to market stuff ,imo the .280 rem never got the popularity it deserved, superb cartridge and better than the .270win ,but in all honesty the 30-06 is king ,huge range of bullet weights ,not an overbored barrel burner ,can do it all in the right hands.
I purchased a 7mm-08 this past summer and simply fell in love. Now, I've taken interest in the 280. What strikes me as odd is why the 280 isn't more popular than it is. I'm actually having a difficult time finding videos detailing them or reviews online. After consulting my Nosler manual and entering some information into a ballistic calculator I'd think people would be clamoring to get their hands on one. They're simply outstanding The only thing that might be a deterrent to the average hunter would be ammunition availability.
It really is a great cartridge and I really like mine. But, for game up to the size of bull elk it doesn't provide any real advantage over the 270 Winchester at ranges up to 350 yards thus the reason it isn't as popular as it would be otherwise. If you get one, I suggest loading it with 140 Accubonds for game up to the size of cow elk and 160 Partitions for bull elk. In fact, I really recommend getting one. After all, one can never have too many rifles!
nmelkhunter1 Gun ownership can certainly be an affliction. I think this affliction can reach near pandemic proportions when we invest in our first reloading manual. It isn't until we have real, hard data in our hands that we can see just how outstanding some of these "hidden treasure" chamberings such as the 280 really are. Now all I need to do is win the lotto so I can spend all of my time (when I'm not traveling) either shooting or reloading so I can go shoot more.
Marketing. Thats what it comes down to and why the 308 calibers are more popular. The 7mm SHOULD have been chosen over the 30 caliber for the military. But politics came into play. I love a 270 myself, but I shot my Dad’s new 7mm-08 the other day and it’s a lot of fun to shoot. Wish I had got one over the 6.5 Creedmoor I bought last year. In fact 7mm-08 was my first choice, but it wasn’t available in the gun I was looking at.
A lot of people want max loads for the most velocity. My 7mm-08 likes 139 gr SST bullets with 43.5 gr of RE17. That's a light load, but it's very consistent. Under 1 MOA all day.
Remington would absolutely OWN the medium cartridge category if they had marketed the 6mm Rem, 260 Rem, and the 280 Rem correctly. Every one of those cartridges is better than it's competition, but Remington just didn't understand how to market these fine cartridges. The 6mm, is better than the .243 Win, the .260 is better than the 6.5 Creedmoor in just about every measurable category, and the .280 is better than the 270.
That's a topic that I may present one day. They've also had some successes, but I agree that their advertising department frequently didn't understand their public and how important it is to understand how significantly names impact perceptions. That was just one of several issues.
For the regular guys 270 is a better choice ammo availability is the key every gun shop and Walmart from coast to coast will have 270 ammo. 280 not so ammo will be hard to come buy...but for the reloader the 280 is so versatile great 7mm projectiles and casing are everywhere can e made from any 30/06 based ammo, those are laying on the ground free at any range in the country. BTW I'm a fan of the 7mm, 7mm-08 is my choice. Very efficient and low recoil!
Bought a Remington 700 Mountain rifle at Kittery trading post on the way from CT to deer hunt Maine. Loved the rifle and caliber and killed lots of deer with it. All one shot kills dead in tracks. I don't reload and the nitwits at Remington weren't making nearly as many bullet options as we're available for the .270, 308 or 30-06. I sold my .280 and picked up a Win Model 70 Featherweight in 06 and a Ruger Hawkeye in .270 as a nod to Jack O. Being able to buy many brands, types and grains of bullets is a big deal. It makes your rifle far more versatile and a better tool. The .280 gave me very few manufacturer option and bullet grain options compared to dozens of option for the .270, 06 and .308
This is a very good video. Thanks for the info. I have found the Hornady 162 grain ELD-X 7mm rem mag is an awesome performer and have shot it past 400 yards with no need to track animal. Shot placement certainly makes a difference as far as destruction on the animal. My shot placements has so far been perfect from this new rifle and this ammo. Although, my brother-in-law shot an antelope in the front shoulder at ~200yards and nearly tore it off.
Wow. Just wow! Subbed, you sir are a priceless wealth of information! Please keep making videos! I converted my vz24 mauser to 708, and haven't looked back! It took down a fairly big Nilgai cow at the king ranch here in Texas. People said it couldn't be done even with a 308, but my dad showed them, as I wasn't the one behind the trigger that day.
All good stuff. What gets me is why when Americans discover something good, like the 7x57, do they then have to dick around and change it just so they say its developed in the USA. The 7x57 is a far better cartridge than the US derivatives as witnessed by 120 years of hunting royalty. Its the same with the 6.5x55. Its a better cartridge than the 6.5 derivatives like the 260, the creedmore etc. Leave well enough alone. If the 7mm is not big enough, go to the 8x57. 4 million Germans can't be wrong. All three of these European cartridges are hard hitting, have magic BCs and Sectional densities and are nice to shoot, and you have to go up to a 35 calibre to find a more effective hunting cartridge, and from then on the 375, 9.3 and 416 Rigby are all you would ever need. None are American. Much is made of the 308, but its popularity is only because the military adopted it for a time. It can be made to be accurate, but its not nice to shoot and the 7mm kills better with less recoil. Here in Australia there is a huge resurge in interest in the 6.5 and 7mm euro rounds simply because they are better. In the 2018 Queens Prize F Class, it was won with a 6.5x55 Mauser action and load pushing a 139gn Lapua Scenar at 2900fps. Nothing remarkable except you can buy that in factory ammo. Thats amazing.

I was studying some of the nosler reloading information 280 Remington Ackley improved versus 7 mm Remington Magnum. I was very surprised to see with the same powder in the same bullet way the 280 AI with 60 grains of IMR 4831 3222 FPS the 7 mm Remington Magnum with 66 grains of IMR 4831 3220 feet per second. As you said the 280 Remington is extremely efficient and I think Ackley improved it's even more efficient. I have heard that many custom rifles are being built in 280 Ackley improved because it is so efficient and such a great performer. I know that was just one load that I compared but I see it saw other loads that were pretty close to the same. Thank you as always great video 👍

I love my Remington 700 bdl stainless 280 rem. Put a custom carbon fiber stock, new trigger and zeiss scope and it’s a tack driver that I use for everything. I use 140 accubond for deer, antelope pigs and exotics and a special load 160 partition for elk out to 500 yards(avg shot is closer 175 yards over last 10 years) But I have a 7mm mag for Wyoming antelope and AZ couse deer because may need a longer shot and my 7mm mag has kentrek dial on zeiss 50 mm scope that is set out to 800 yards. I’m a super fan of 7mm bullet and my daughter uses 7mm-08 and hunts everything I do with it.
When I was a kid the gun writers said it was a pity the 1893 Spanish Mauser was so weak because no one would risk making modern high pressure loads for it for fear of being sued. It could fire a modern high pressure cartridge but had little margin of safety if something untoward happened. IIRC the cartridge is rated for 50,000 psi (46,000 cup) but the action was only rated for 62,000 psi. Quality control was a new science in the 1890s which is why Mauser brought out the improved 1895 and 1898 models. Even the early run of 1903 Springfield rifles had issues with heat treating because no one had invented a reliable pyrometer. Moreover, the 1893 had no provision for gas control if a cartridge leaked. So far as rifle makers were concerned there was more money and positive publicity in standardizing popular wildcats like the 25-06 which had a line of people, money in-hand, waiting to buy one. Every few years a gun maker would chamber a few rifles for the 7x57 in response to some writer beating the drums for it and quietly drop it later. When the 7mm-08 was adopted by Remington it effectively killed the raison d'être for the 7x57. The 8x57 never became popular in the US either yet the 1898 Mauser is a strong gun and plenty came home as war trophies.
Yes, but in the history of modern gunmaking, ammo has traditionally been boxed with admonishments to warn owners of potentially weak firearms, as with the caution on shotshells for many years to not fire them in older Damascus barrels. The 7x57mm Mauser cartridge remains one of the very finest rounds ever invented, and in modern rifles is easily capable of performance exceeding the 7mm-08 by virtue of its greater case capacity and better neck length for heavy bullets. The greater problem has been the American resistance to metric bores that persisted for decades. While the 7mm-08 remains one of the best rounds made, the 7x57mm Mauser is simply better in every regard. American arms manufacturers have had a dedicated interest in protecting their domestic cartridges, and have consistently obstructed the introduction of historically successful metric cartridges.

After watching this video, it highly influenced my decision on what I intend to purchase. I live in VA we have a variety of game including deer even elk in some areas also hogs and bear. To me it makes absolute sense to get a 7mm Rem mag. Hornady has a light custom load with a 139gr SST @ 2800 fps which is 7mm-08 and 7x57 Mauser velocities. It's supposed to be 25% lighter in recoil than full power loads. We have mixed terrain mountains and timber and even fields and farms. A long shot is not unheard of in my area. If I want to go Elk hunting either here in VA or out west I can switch to full power loads.
Eggomania86 That's a very good choice. Do not neglect the 270 Winchester either. It's performance on game up to elk and moose is virtually on par with the 7mm Magnum, and is very efficient, using less powder that significantly reduces recoil, and typically with a standard length, lighter barrel. The classic 130 grain loading at up to 3200 fps is a dead ringer for the 7mm Mag with a 140 grain bullet, with ample energy. Likewise, the high velocity load with a 150 grain bullet at over 2900 fps will do virtually anything the 160 grain 7mm Mag will do. I had your same quandry years ago, when I called Nosler for advice. The man who picked up the phone was none other than the late John Nosler Sr. himself, with whom I had a wonderful long talk. His preference went to the 270 over the 7mm Mag, for all the aforesaid reasons, which he had complete confidence in for elk. I've used it successfully for over 40 years, and it has always struck with lightning bolt authority on everything. On far shots, the 130 is the ticket. On closer shots, the standard 150 grain load at around 2750 to 2840 gives you 7mm Mauser performance, without dynamiting meat. For really superb intermediate range handloads, just load the 130 down to 2700, which gives 139 grain 7mm-08 or 7mm Mauser performance, with less recoil. You cannot go wrong with the 7mm Mag. but check my 270 video before you cash in.
I will definitely take that into consideration. I do have a .270 it's a JC Higgins 51L on a Husqvarna Mauser98 action. It's treated me well and my grandpa as well. It's a rifle I inherited it's starting to show it's age. It needs work, the barrel is worn out and the bolt is starting to stick on factory ammo, showing signs of pressure. That's where I am at. Looking for an alternative. The .270 is definitely on my list of choices. I've looked at the 6.5 creedmore and even the .280 Ackley imp which in my opinion is everything the .280 Rem should be. From hunting I am familiar with the .270 and 7mm Mag It's conundrum trying to choose. I know they both perform. I am considering restoring my .270 Mauser, but the thing is to re barrel it, and to restore and possibly replace the stock it's not cheap. The gunsmith quoted my about 2k. I figured I can get a new rifle for less. When I buy something I like to do my homework and read reviews especially when it comes to firearms and it's something that I have to depend on. I want to thank you for your advice, I enjoy watching your videos and learning.
Eggomania86 If you like a good Mauser action like your Husqvarna, take a look at the new Winchester Model 70. I purchased mine brand new for $875, and it came from the factory beautifully glass bedded and free floated, and has the pre-64 controlled feed, target crown, and gorgeous walnut. Best of all, it shoots five shot groups consistently 3/4 inch or less, with a 22 inch featherweight barrel. It's available in standard 24 inch rifle, too. Be careful with AI calibers. They typically provide only an additional 100 to 150 fps, if that. In the 280 it generally is less than 60 feet per second. Keep in mind that each 100 adds only 22 feet of ballistic advantage, with a noticeably higher recoil. 65 fps would stretch your trajectory only 12 feet or so... a third of a school girl's softball toss. The biggest problem is ammo availability. Yes, you can fire standard ammo in them, but doing so reduces the efficiency of the standard load by an average of 200 feet per second, due to the oversize chamber that does not correspond to the load. Larger chambers are less efficient proportionally, and use lots more powder for the same velocity. The 280 is an excellent round as loaded these days, and has great potential. Even though it was commonly loaded with 150 grain bullets at very humdrum velocities when released, it's at its flattest with 140 grain loads, which have 270 Winchester ballistics, but with slighly better frontal area. The 150 or 160 with a stout bullet is perfect for elk or moose.
I did consider everything, the gun shop had a .338 Winchester model 70 super grade. I shouldered it, with me it felt like a glove, like I was ment to buy it. I didn't get the .338 but I did have them order the 7mm Rem mag, that's what I decided. I like the blueing and the grain of the wood. It feels like a rifle. Anymore if you look behind the counter of most gun shops most rifles are entry level budget rifles like the Ruger American, not that there is nothing wrong with them It's not for me someone who grew up with the feel of steel and wood. As far as scopes goes, I do have a tactical side to me, I have an AR that's a mk.12 clone by Bravo company that currently sports a swfa 3-15x42 ffp. I am going to pull that scope off of it and put it on my m70 temporarily. I use my AR as a fun gun and I occasionally hunt ground hogs and coyotes with it. I am going to save up to get a more appropriate scope for the m-70 I am liking the Leupold vx-5hd and vx-6hd models I like the 2-12 and 3.5-10 models. You are right about the Ackley cartridges. I ultimately decided I did not want to fool with them. I must say thank you very much for your advice!
GunBlue490 I have the new Winchester model 70 Featherweight chambered in .280 Remington. It’s the most beautiful well balanced and nimble handling rifle I’ve ever owned . Butter smooth action , Pachmayr decelerator recoils pad included , very nice trigger, and as I mentioned to you in your other video thread , I’m using Corbon 140 grain DPX loads ( which are no longer being manufactured) I wish Corbon would make more . But this really is “ The riflemans rifle “ . And my only gripe is it should have a 1 in 9 twist , but it is 1 in 10 . I’m sure it will handle 160 grain Nosler Partitions , but with Barnes 140 grain TTSX , I don’t see a need for much heavier even for elk at moderate ranges , so the 1 in 10 twist rate is adequate enough for my hunting needs .
Would also like to know if the heavier bullets would be better or the lighter faster bullets. 175gr interlock bullet? 140gr CX bullets? Wat is better in the 7 Mauser.

I have had a 308 with a 22" barrel and now own a 7mm-08 Rem 20" since a year or two and the recoil is so gentle without sacrifing any takedown power. Using the 140gr accubond on roe deer and ferral hogs. Greetings from Germany!

I hunt deer exclusively in Georgia, usually from an elevated stand with shots averaging from 25 yards to a rare 150 yards. I've taken whitetails with a .270, 30-06, 7mm-08, and even a 300 REM SAUM. In my honest opinion, nothing works better than the 7mm-08. I use a model 700 Mountain Rifle in stainless steel with Leupold scope. If I hit them right, they never go far with the 7mm-08. I use factory Hornady 139 grain light magnums with an SST tip. I'm not a handloader or ballistician, but I know I can do anything I want with that gun and that round. It's very light recoiling as well.

I love my .280. I have been having it sine 1995. I tried out a .270 for a while, but went back the the .280 as it just seems to always get a passthrough and deer seem to not go as far if they don't drop. My dad took his .280 on a Caribou hunt in Alaska and blew through everyone no problem with 160 grain Nosler Accubonds.

I have a Ruger M77 in the .280 Remington I bought (used) in late 1986 that was built between 1979 and 1981 and it's interesting because the heavy barrel had ".280/7mm Express Rem" stamped on it . The factory barrel was starting to show signs of wear so I replaced it in late 2010 with a stainless steel target barrel, I load/reload my own ammo and the rifle has always shot accurate groups. I also remember getting boxes of Remington once-fired cases in that caliber that had ".280/7mm Express" on the side of the boxes.

I had a 7mm RM several years ago. It was a whopper. Made some great shots with that gun. Now I have a 7X57 and a 280 Rem. The real beauty of the .284 class rounds is the bullet availability. I can hand load to make my 280 be a 30-06 or a 270. An amazing round. If anyone still shunns the 7X57, they should consider that it was the round that spawned the creation of the 30-06 when Teddy Roosevelt encountered it on San Juan hill. They found themselves fighting with inferior weapons in the 30-40 Kraig vs the 7mm Spanish Mauser. Then the US had to pay royalties following a lawsuit by Paul Mauser for copying his patents with the 1903 Springfield. So maybe we Americans should not be so hard on the little old 7X57. Which incidentally will do anything the 7-08 will do and then some.

@@thecontrarian1446 Are they twins, yes and no. The 7X57 will shoot a 150 gr bullet at 2800-2900 fps in modern rifles, i.e. Remington 700, Winchester 70. The 7mm -08 will launch that same bullet at 2700 fps. The 7mm-08 is a short action cartridge whereas the 7X57 is not. The 7x57 can use 30-06 cases , all one does is trim them 3/16 of a inch and reform them.

My hunting/trap shooting buddy died a few years ago, and he told his wife to give me his 7 x 57 Mauser before he died. About 6 months after his funeral I was talking to her, and their lazy, druggie, basement dwelling grandson had sold it for drug money. Along with all of his guns. Hard to believe the low point people can get to over drugs and entitlement attitudes of today's youth. And I will forever regret not ending up with Dave's Rifle. We hunted together all the time in New Hampshire, and one season we each got pretty a decent meat deer, Dave with his Mauser, and me with my Browning falling block 30.06, 3 days apart. (We were hunting a swamp that year, in the WAY back woods that nobody ventured near). Good memories.

Largely based on your recommendation I purchased a 7mm-08 a couple of years ago. I have never regretted that decision. Yesterday (3-30-18) I purchased a 1974 production M77 in 7mm Rem Mag. Now, to find a 280 Remington and the family will be complete.

I find the lil 08s do just as well out to about 400 then the mag out shoots it. But if I only could have one rifle for hunting it would be the 7mm08.
I prefer my 270 Win for shooting to 350 yards. Beyond that, I have to admit that my 7mm RMag with its 160 grain bullets is superior. Not by a lot, but enough that I'd choose the heavier, harder kicking magnum over the standard cartridge. Thing is, the 7mm will shoot out the barrel throat about 3X faster than the 270.

@@adamdrouin2295 he’s saying shoot out the barrel throat 3x faster … yeah I don’t know about all that , the .270 is somewhat a barrel burner as well( anything that pushes bullets in excess of 2,900- 3,000 ft/sec burns barrels rather quickly ) but the 7mm mag uses about twice the powder charge so I’d say it could potentially burn out the barrel throat 2X as fast .

i had a 7400 in 280, for better or worse i reloaded for it using nickel plated brass. I never seen fired brass be so hot that it changed colors. You had to wait some time before picking up the brass as it was hot enough to fry. I love the round, but wasnt sure about the rifle. The 708 is about all anyone would ever need for love and war
I used my dads .280 Rem my first few years deer hunting. Love that gun (R700) and its always been a tack driver even with some basic hunting loads off the shelf.

In my opinion, the 280 or 280Ackley with Hornady Precision Hunter ammo is an outstanding western deer cartridge. Look at velocities and energy out to 500 yards. It's hard to beat.

Great video, as always. A few years ago I was reading about the 7x57 Mauser, got inspired, and bought one of the Shot Show Winchester Featherweight models. I've hunted with the usual blend of 30-06, 30-30, 7mmRemMag, and 270Win. While all of these rounds are 100% effective when used correctly, the 7Remmie was my favorite. The 7Mauser has been a great deal of fun to use nowadays because the recoil is so mild compared to what I've shot over the years, in fact, my 10yr old daughter has claimed the Winchester as hers when she gets older. That puts me sort of back in the market for another rifle.
Your remarks at the end of the presentation concerning using a reduced round for regular 300yd hunting and a full load heavier round for elk and up made sense and the old lightbulb popped on! I hadn't really thought about that dual usage from a 7RemMag but you made a great case for it! Thanks again for your thoughts on the matter!

7mm-08 vs 7mm mag for deer and elk. I love your videos. I am completely new to rifles so I'm slowly learning the terminology. Recoil is my big thing, and I really want to spend the time perfecting my shot placement. My first hunting season with a bow I saw a bull elk and 326 yards (which I stocked down to 30), and a some really nice mule deer bucks anywhere from 80-374 yards. Still leaning towards the 7mm-08, but they go quick!
I own 30-30, .308, .270, 25-06 and .243. Thinking about getting a 6.5 PRC next. Love them all!

The use of cup and core bullets requires less speed and provides a cheaper bullet that is more accurate, destroys less meat and is less prone to bullet failure for being too close or too far away. They just work, and for less $/bullet. Also the 25yd/100fps of extra range, nope, ...I calculate it closer to 10yd/100fps. That's talking mpbr. Amen
Remington is known for it's bone-headed decisions... The 280/7mm Express, the 244/6mm Rem and more recently the 6.8SPC. All three great Cartridges that Remington's board room failed on!

Both are excellent rounds that never failed to shoot accurately and deadly. It's unfortunate what happened to their potential, commercially speaking.
Had a Rem 700 Mountain rifle in .280 A great rifle/caliber. Would never have sold it if there were more bullet options available like the .270 and 30-06. I don't hand load yet and I like having lots of bullet options. I have a couple of nice .270s.

Good Video Sir, I live and Hunt in East Texas, Here We have a mixture of Forrest, Clear Cuts, and Farm land. In this area popular Deer Hunting Cartridges are usually the 30 30 Winchester, the .308 Winchester, and the 3006 Springfield. I have noticed however that West Texas Hunters that come here usually bring the .243 Winchester, the .270 Winchester, or the 7mm Remington Magnum. Another great video GB. After hunting with the 7mm mag the past 12 years, I'm still amazed by its performance on game. I mostly hunt pronghorn these days using 140 grain bullets and it's downright lethal. Comforting to know that anything inside of about 350 yards is meat in the freezer. And I have never seen any excessive meat damage.

Smoked plenty of elk with the .280 Remington 140 grain Accubond. Awesome round! NEVER had one get away. I don't hunt deer and there's no "woodland" hunting. Open sagebrush or Mountain timber and canyons. I've busted elk in the front and not had a problem. Good Montana mountain gun. Good video!

Was always a great round, but it was the victim of the earlier 270's established popularity. Remington didn't help matters by loading it with 150 grain bullets that looked no different on paper to 30-06 and 150 grain 270 loads to the average person. If they loaded it with 140s like you, history may have been quite different. They made a number of poor boardroom choices with a number of rounds over the years that killed other cartridges, too.
I have shot a 270 for 30 years at deer and bear in Pa 1 500lb plus bear I love my 270 a lot of 500 yard shots but if I could do it over I would have a 280 only for more bullet choices for reloading

I wish one one the rifle manufacturers would build a 24” barreled 7x57 rifle. With modern powders and projectiles the 7X57 would an all around deer, antelope and elk cartridge. I think if one of the manufacturers took on the revitalization of this fantastic old cartridge they wouldn’t be able to keep up with the demand.
After watching this video last summer I went out and bought two rifles. The first a Tikka T3X Laminated stock and Stainless barrel in .270 and also a Tikka T3X with a synthetic stock and stainless barrel in 7mm-08. These two guns join my Remington 700BDL DM 7mm Rem Mag in the gun safe. Thank you for all the information you share with us!

I, too, am a fan of the venerable 30-06 cartridge. I'd love to see someone neck-down a 6.5mm bullet to fit in the case. I'm sure wildcatters have done it, but a factory rifle with factory ammo for it would be great. I'd say 7mm-06, too, except that it would probably be too-similar to the 7mm Rem-Mag to sell.

I agree ,Winchester new how to market stuff ,imo the .280 rem never got the popularity it deserved, superb cartridge and better than the .270win ,but in all honesty the 30-06 is king ,huge range of bullet weights ,not an overbored barrel burner ,can do it all in the right hands.

I purchased a 7mm-08 this past summer and simply fell in love. Now, I've taken interest in the 280. What strikes me as odd is why the 280 isn't more popular than it is. I'm actually having a difficult time finding videos detailing them or reviews online. After consulting my Nosler manual and entering some information into a ballistic calculator I'd think people would be clamoring to get their hands on one. They're simply outstanding The only thing that might be a deterrent to the average hunter would be ammunition availability.
It really is a great cartridge and I really like mine. But, for game up to the size of bull elk it doesn't provide any real advantage over the 270 Winchester at ranges up to 350 yards thus the reason it isn't as popular as it would be otherwise. If you get one, I suggest loading it with 140 Accubonds for game up to the size of cow elk and 160 Partitions for bull elk. In fact, I really recommend getting one. After all, one can never have too many rifles!
nmelkhunter1 Gun ownership can certainly be an affliction. I think this affliction can reach near pandemic proportions when we invest in our first reloading manual. It isn't until we have real, hard data in our hands that we can see just how outstanding some of these "hidden treasure" chamberings such as the 280 really are. Now all I need to do is win the lotto so I can spend all of my time (when I'm not traveling) either shooting or reloading so I can go shoot more.
Marketing. Thats what it comes down to and why the 308 calibers are more popular. The 7mm SHOULD have been chosen over the 30 caliber for the military. But politics came into play.

A lot of people want max loads for the most velocity. My 7mm-08 likes 139 gr SST bullets with 43.5 gr of RE17. That's a light load, but it's very consistent. Under 1 MOA all day.

Remington would absolutely OWN the medium cartridge category if they had marketed the 6mm Rem, 260 Rem, and the 280 Rem correctly. Every one of those cartridges is better than it's competition, but Remington just didn't understand how to market these fine cartridges. The 6mm, is better than the .243 Win, the .260 is better than the 6.5 Creedmoor in just about every measurable category, and the .280 is better than the 270.
That's a topic that I may present one day. They've also had some successes, but I agree that their advertising department frequently didn't understand their public and how important it is to understand how significantly names impact perceptions. That was just one of several issues.
For the regular guys 270 is a better choice ammo availability is the key every gun shop and Walmart from coast to coast will have 270 ammo. 280 not so ammo will be hard to come buy...but for the reloader the 280 is so versatile great 7mm projectiles and casing are everywhere can e made from any 30/06 based ammo, those are laying on the ground free at any range in the country. BTW I'm a fan of the 7mm, 7mm-08 is my choice. Very efficient and low recoil!
Bought a Remington 700 Mountain rifle at Kittery trading post on the way from CT to deer hunt Maine. Loved the rifle and caliber and killed lots of deer with it. All one shot kills dead in tracks. I don't reload and the nitwits at Remington weren't making nearly as many bullet options as we're available for the .270, 308 or 30-06.
I sold my .280 and picked up a Win Model 70 Featherweight in 06 and a Ruger Hawkeye in .270 as a nod to Jack O. Being able to buy many brands, types and grains of bullets is a big deal. It makes your rifle far more versatile and a better tool.
The .280 gave me very few manufacturer option and bullet grain options compared to dozens of option for the .270, 06 and .308
This is a very good video. Thanks for the info. I have found the Hornady 162 grain ELD-X 7mm rem mag is an awesome performer and have shot it past 400 yards with no need to track animal. Shot placement certainly makes a difference as far as destruction on the animal. My shot placements has so far been perfect from this new rifle and this ammo. Although, my brother-in-law shot an antelope in the front shoulder at ~200yards and nearly tore it off.

I converted my vz24 mauser to 708, and haven't looked back! It took down a fairly big Nilgai cow at the king ranch here in Texas. People said it couldn't be done even with a 308, but my dad showed them, as I wasn't the one behind the trigger that day.

I am a new subscriber and I have watched several of your videos. You are very well educated with various rifle cartridges.
All good stuff. What gets me is why when Americans discover something good, like the 7x57, do they then have to dick around and change it just so they say its developed in the USA. The 7x57 is a far better cartridge than the US derivatives as witnessed by 120 years of hunting royalty. Its the same with the 6.5x55. Its a better cartridge than the 6.5 derivatives like the 260, the creedmore etc. Leave well enough alone. If the 7mm is not big enough, go to the 8x57. 4 million Germans can't be wrong. All three of these European cartridges are hard hitting, have magic BCs and Sectional densities and are nice to shoot, and you have to go up to a 35 calibre to find a more effective hunting cartridge, and from then on the 375, 9.3 and 416 Rigby are all you would ever need. None are American.
Much is made of the 308, but its popularity is only because the military adopted it for a time. It can be made to be accurate, but its not nice to shoot and the 7mm kills better with less recoil.
Here in Australia there is a huge resurge in interest in the 6.5 and 7mm euro rounds simply because they are better. In the 2018 Queens Prize F Class, it was won with a 6.5x55 Mauser action and load pushing a 139gn Lapua Scenar at 2900fps. Nothing remarkable except you can buy that in factory ammo. Thats amazing.

I like the .280 Rem. I chambered a Mauser in it. Combined with a Douglas barrel and Timely trigger made it into a real shooter with good hand loads.

I was studying some of the nosler reloading information 280 Remington Ackley improved versus 7 mm Remington Magnum. I was very surprised to see with the same powder in the same bullet way the 280 AI with 60 grains of IMR 4831 3222 FPS the 7 mm Remington Magnum with 66 grains of IMR 4831 3220 feet per second. As you said the 280 Remington is extremely efficient and I think Ackley improved it's even more efficient. I have heard that many custom rifles are being built in 280 Ackley improved because it is so efficient and such a great performer. I know that was just one load that I compared but I see it saw other loads that were pretty close to the same. Thank you as always great video 👍

I love my Remington 700 bdl stainless 280 rem. Put a custom carbon fiber stock, new trigger and zeiss scope and it’s a tack driver that I use for everything. I use 140 accubond for deer, antelope pigs and exotics and a special load 160 partition for elk out to 500 yards(avg shot is closer 175 yards over last 10 years) But I have a 7mm mag for Wyoming antelope and AZ couse deer because may need a longer shot and my 7mm mag has kentrek dial on zeiss 50 mm scope that is set out to 800 yards. I’m a super fan of 7mm bullet and my daughter uses 7mm-08 and hunts everything I do with it.
When I was a kid the gun writers said it was a pity the 1893 Spanish Mauser was so weak because no one would risk making modern high pressure loads for it for fear of being sued. It could fire a modern high pressure cartridge but had little margin of safety if something untoward happened. IIRC the cartridge is rated for 50,000 psi (46,000 cup) but the action was only rated for 62,000 psi. Quality control was a new science in the 1890s which is why Mauser brought out the improved 1895 and 1898 models. Even the early run of 1903 Springfield rifles had issues with heat treating because no one had invented a reliable pyrometer. Moreover, the 1893 had no provision for gas control if a cartridge leaked. So far as rifle makers were concerned there was more money and positive publicity in standardizing popular wildcats like the 25-06 which had a line of people, money in-hand, waiting to buy one. Every few years a gun maker would chamber a few rifles for the 7x57 in response to some writer beating the drums for it and quietly drop it later. When the 7mm-08 was adopted by Remington it effectively killed the raison d'être for the 7x57. The 8x57 never became popular in the US either yet the 1898 Mauser is a strong gun and plenty came home as war trophies.
Yes, but in the history of modern gunmaking, ammo has traditionally been boxed with admonishments to warn owners of potentially weak firearms, as with the caution on shotshells for many years to not fire them in older Damascus barrels. The 7x57mm Mauser cartridge remains one of the very finest rounds ever invented, and in modern rifles is easily capable of performance exceeding the 7mm-08 by virtue of its greater case capacity and better neck length for heavy bullets. The greater problem has been the American resistance to metric bores that persisted for decades. While the 7mm-08 remains one of the best rounds made, the 7x57mm Mauser is simply better in every regard. American arms manufacturers have had a dedicated interest in protecting their domestic cartridges, and have consistently obstructed the introduction of historically successful metric cartridges.
Now that I have a 300 win mag the 270 the 30-06 and 7mm-08 all sit at home. 300 win mag is all I need.

I’ve got two Mauser action Sporters with thumb through Boyd’s stocks. A 7x57 and a .308. Haven’t fired either yet but will next week. What a great rundown on the MilSurp rounds. Thank you.
After watching this video, it highly influenced my decision on what I intend to purchase. I live in VA we have a variety of game including deer even elk in some areas also hogs and bear. To me it makes absolute sense to get a 7mm Rem mag. Hornady has a light custom load with a 139gr SST @ 2800 fps which is 7mm-08 and 7x57 Mauser velocities. It's supposed to be 25% lighter in recoil than full power loads. We have mixed terrain mountains and timber and even fields and farms. A long shot is not unheard of in my area. If I want to go Elk hunting either here in VA or out west I can switch to full power loads.

That's a very good choice. Do not neglect the 270 Winchester either. It's performance on game up to elk and moose is virtually on par with the 7mm Magnum, and is very efficient, using less powder that significantly reduces recoil, and typically with a standard length, lighter barrel. The classic 130 grain loading at up to 3200 fps is a dead ringer for the 7mm Mag with a 140 grain bullet, with ample energy. Likewise, the high velocity load with a 150 grain bullet at over 2900 fps will do virtually anything the 160 grain 7mm Mag will do. I had your same quandry years ago, when I called Nosler for advice. The man who picked up the phone was none other than the late John Nosler Sr. himself, with whom I had a wonderful long talk. His preference went to the 270 over the 7mm Mag, for all the aforesaid reasons, which he had complete confidence in for elk. I've used it successfully for over 40 years, and it has always struck with lightning bolt authority on everything. On far shots, the 130 is the ticket. On closer shots, the standard 150 grain load at around 2750 to 2840 gives you 7mm Mauser performance, without dynamiting meat. For really superb intermediate range handloads, just load the 130 down to 2700, which gives 139 grain 7mm-08 or 7mm Mauser performance, with less recoil. You cannot go wrong with the 7mm Mag. but check my 270 video before you cash in.
I will definitely take that into consideration. I do have a .270 it's a JC Higgins 51L on a Husqvarna Mauser98 action. It's treated me well and my grandpa as well. It's a rifle I inherited it's starting to show it's age. It needs work, the barrel is worn out and the bolt is starting to stick on factory ammo, showing signs of pressure. That's where I am at. Looking for an alternative. The .270 is definitely on my list of choices. I've looked at the 6.5 creedmore and even the .280 Ackley imp which in my opinion is everything the .280 Rem should be. From hunting I am familiar with the .270 and 7mm Mag It's conundrum trying to choose. I know they both perform. I am considering restoring my .270 Mauser, but the thing is to re barrel it, and to restore and possibly replace the stock it's not cheap. The gunsmith quoted my about 2k. I figured I can get a new rifle for less. When I buy something I like to do my homework and read reviews especially when it comes to firearms and it's something that I have to depend on. If you like a good Mauser action like your Husqvarna, take a look at the new Winchester Model 70. I purchased mine brand new for $875, and it came from the factory beautifully glass bedded and free floated, and has the pre-64 controlled feed, target crown, and gorgeous walnut. Best of all, it shoots five shot groups consistently 3/4 inch or less, with a 22 inch featherweight barrel. It's available in standard 24 inch rifle, too. Be careful with AI calibers. They typically provide only an additional 100 to 150 fps, if that. In the 280 it generally is less than 60 feet per second. Keep in mind that each 100 adds only 22 feet of ballistic advantage, with a noticeably higher recoil. 65 fps would stretch your trajectory only 12 feet or so... a third of a school girl's softball toss. The biggest problem is ammo availability. Yes, you can fire standard ammo in them, but doing so reduces the efficiency of the standard load by an average of 200 feet per second, due to the oversize chamber that does not correspond to the load. Larger chambers are less efficient proportionally, and use lots more powder for the same velocity. The 280 is an excellent round as loaded these days, and has great potential. Even though it was commonly loaded with 150 grain bullets at very humdrum velocities when released, it's at its flattest with 140 grain loads, which have 270 Winchester ballistics, but with slighly better frontal area. The 150 or 160 with a stout bullet is perfect for elk or moose.
I did consider everything, the gun shop had a .338 Winchester model 70 super grade. I shouldered it, with me it felt like a glove, like I was ment to buy it. I didn't get the .338 but I did have them order the 7mm Rem mag, that's what I decided. I like the blueing and the grain of the wood. It feels like a rifle. Anymore if you look behind the counter of most gun shops most rifles are entry level budget rifles like the Ruger American, not that there is nothing wrong with them It's not for me someone who grew up with the feel of steel and wood. As far as scopes goes, I do have a tactical side to me, I have an AR that's a mk.12 clone by Bravo company that currently sports a swfa 3-15x42 ffp. I am going to pull that scope off of it and put it on my m70 temporarily. I use my AR as a fun gun and I occasionally hunt ground hogs and coyotes with it. I am going to save up to get a more appropriate scope for the m-70 I am liking the Leupold vx-5hd and vx-6hd models I like the 2-12 and 3.5-10 models. You are right about the Ackley cartridges. I ultimately decided I did not want to fool with them. I must say thank you very much for your advice!
GunBlue490 I have the new Winchester model 70 Featherweight chambered in .280 Remington. It’s the most beautiful well balanced and nimble handling rifle I’ve ever owned . Butter smooth action , Pachmayr decelerator recoils pad included , very nice trigger, and as I mentioned to you in your other video thread , I’m using Corbon 140 grain DPX loads ( which are no longer being manufactured) I wish Corbon would make more . But this really is “ The riflemans rifle “ . And my only gripe is it should have a 1 in 9 twist , but it is 1 in 10 . I’m sure it will handle 160 grain Nosler Partitions , but with Barnes 140 grain TTSX , I don’t see a need for much heavier even for elk at moderate ranges , so the 1 in 10 twist rate is adequate enough for my hunting needs .
