Come onnnnnn, did you know this tip for FCP? I feel like an *_IDIOT_* for not knowing... What else are you keeping from me!?! 😂...🥺
Of course I did. Been doing it since I watched all of this video. 😂 oh man that reaction when you dragged and dropped had me laughing so hard
Wow! I spend half of my swearing just trying to get my text colored like I want it! YOU TWO SAVED ME LOTS.OF SWEARING! THANKS!!!!
Haha - I know how that goes!
Absolutely love these small time-savers!
But I gotta know, Dylan... did you now this one???
@@matthewTobrien I did! I’m sorry for not telling you sooner 😂
I knew it!!!
These tiny little tips are often the most exciting ones to learn 😄🙌🏼
It's funny that they are, but you're absolutely right!
@@matthewTobrien 😂🙌🏼
I had no idea about this one. Another one I found out recently that’s so simple is that you can expand the inspector by double clicking the name at the top of it. Super helpful when you have a lot of plugins active
Ohhhhh I've had that one in a video or two. That's a great one. Most of the time I'm helping people undo it because they did it by accident. Haha.
Did not know this. Thanks Matthew
Make sure to throw it into one of your tips videos down the road!
My biggest game changer was making slow motion speed and optical flow custom buttons on my stream deck. 1 button does the whole process now. Saved me thousands of clicks
How do you do that? Sounds cool
Such a great way to use a Stream Deck. I have a lot of those kinds of shortcuts programmed to my Monogram Video Console, and I love it. If I ever shot with slo mo I'd do the same thing.
I honestly never knew this and i've been using final cut pro for 7 years thats hilarious
Haha - welcome to the club!
Same here. Long time FCPX editor. Did NOT know this tip. And you're right, I had the same response. Thanks for that!
Gotta love when a tip makes you gasp 🤯
love it!!! I didn't know and this is so much cooler than the whole tap-dance I usually go through...
Glad it's going to help!
These videos are the reason I’m a subscriber here! I have never done this, I will now do this 😂
Too kind! Glad you’re a part of the channel 🤘🙌
Great tip! Had no idea about it! Almost 20 years in FCP!
Unreal! Now you can REALLY get some editing work done! 😂
@@matthewTobrien Well done Matt! Will keep following in 2024! :)
With the new FCPX 10.7, the scrolling timeline now stops scrolling when you put the cursor over a clip. This allows you to make changes to the clip without having to stop the playback. The scrolling will resume when you move your cursor away from the clip. 😉
Yes! I’ve noticed that as well.
I must be doing it wrong because my scrolling does not stop. Is there a setting to make this happen?
Actually, it does work. 😊
Maybe because your Mac has an Intel processor?@@absmth3
Put the cursor over a clip... in the browser@@absmth3
*Le gasp!* that is freaking amazing! Thank you!
People hate on Final Cut Pro, but they don’t know about all the little treasures that it’s packed with
So many little treasures!
I tried, FCP, i really did, back on DaVinci Resolve. If I want to fade in and out, i just grab the edge of the clip in DaVinci. In FCP I've got to go full bonkers nuts. Horrendous irritating software! Your videos, the two Dylan's, Brad have excellent videos on the sotfware, thanks for that. 👍🏻@matthewTobrien
I use it already 6 years ago...there are so many thinks we don't already know. learn so many thinks from your tip's. great job.
Thank you!!!
its not much but it can certainly save you time in the long run and speed up your work flow
Thanks for the sweet tip Matt
Exactly. A small thing that adds up to a lot day in and day out of 🔪🥦
just wow 🤯
😲😲😲
You mentioned that you have other videos with similar types... if you made a compellation of all of those tips, I'd watch the whole video all the way through 💯
Interesting… I might need to make a playlist in but meantime 🤔
Matthew you are the BEST! My fave fcp guy!!!
Love it!
Wowsers, you just won the Internet today that’s brilliant
I've always wanted to win the Internet!
Thank you! There are so many shortcuts like these. My problem is that I need many of them infrequently. So when it comes time to actually make use of a tip, it takes me more time to look up ("wait, how do I do that again?") than just to do it the hard way.
I absolutely get this!
I use a lot of images from Keynote presentations. If you import a still image, you can't increase its duration. And when exporting from Keynote, if you export as a single slide as a still image, it creates a folder structure and places the image in it. But if you export a single slide as video, you don't get the folder junk. And when you import into FCP, you can change its duration.
Solid tip! And Keynote is 🔥
In Motion 5, you can even select several parameters (size, position, etc) and drag them onto a different layer. It would be a great feature in FCP, eventhough, the paste atributes is also very useful (and does not exist in Motion).
That would be awesome in FCP.
great tip! all about maximizing efficiency!!!
You know it, brother!
Who would have known? Love it. Thanks!
Crazy, right? Thanks for watching!
That is awesome! Thanks a lot!

Amazing! Thanks!

Useful! Thank you.

Awesome. You'd think there may be more drag options?
Now that I found this one, I'm gonna have to test for hidden drag features everywhere!
Fabulous tip Matthew. I would love to see a video on how you edit a three minute video like this. Video and audio jump cuts. It’s a tad distracting but I like it 😊
You just keep it tight! And make a 2nd angle out of your main angle to do that UA-cam thing.
@@matthewTobrien Thanks. I get that and do it myself. I would just like to see an indepth video on how "you" do it. Your method and plugins etc.....
Thanks for the tip!
You're welcome!
I learned this last week in Dylan John's new format "Did you know". Higly recommended!☺️
Oh dang! How did I miss that???

Shiiiiiit... Been using FCP since launch, yes Final Cut 1, anyway, this is new to me. Thank you
Always learning new stuff... Even us cagey old veterans!

good tip... LOL. Thanks for sharing. However sometimes plugin's attribute list is too long and color wells are scattered,... somehow is difficult to drag and drop.
Fair point. That's where it gets tricky.
I didn't know that. Awesome & Thanks :)
You're welcome! Thanks for checking it out!
Omg 😱 I’m… yes, that blows me away AND makes me feel stupid. And now I’m thinking there are probably 1000 of these things I haven’t known about…

I'm a relatively new editor in FCPX and I'm curious how you would deal with ten takes of the same 3-5 minute monologue.Every take is slightly different, sometime containing improvisations. I have synced all takes with the sound and made them compound clips. How to best compare and contrast now? It gets confusing. I went through each one, there is a main take, but there are also bits and pieces of the other takes I like. One thing that helped is stacking the first part of the shot on top of each other in a timeline and then turning on/off different clips. I was wondering wether experienced FCPX editors have a method for that. So far, I love keywording. I wish there was a way to visually label things within the clip itself.
Great question! Two things: I typically use Synchronized Clips for syncing audio to picture in narrative projects.
Have you explored FCP’s Audition feature? Great solution for exactly what you’re trying to do:
support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/intro-to-auditions-verbbd3587d/mac
@@matthewTobrien Hi, thank you! Yes, I've looked at Auditions but with ten clips it got a little cumbersome to horizontally switch between the clips in the pop up. The clips also have slightly different lengths, so different things happen at different times. However, would you recommend perhaps looking at the compound clips in the browser and marking different in and out points there instead of stacking them in the timeline? I stacked all ten temporarily on the timeline because it also gives me a visual sense of the length of the takes. I turn them on and off as needed for viewing ('V'). I will get rid of those for the edit and just do it in the main timeline, but for right now just for viewing and clip selection purposes, they're stacked up. However, doing it in the browser instead and marking in and out points there perhaps makes more sense? By the way, I had to synchronize manually, so that's why I call them compounded clips.
@@matthewTobrien Just a super quick update about the "many takes" problem. I figured out something that you have probably talked a lot about in your videos: Using the browser to its full extent. Selecting and keywording parts of clips is so much easier in the browser. I then could go back and call up only the keyworded bits and pieces. Using keyboard controls (j, k, l) and arrow keys, you can quickly jump between the parts of interest for comparison/contrast. Using the browser was something I had neglected. I had tried to do it all in the timeline.
OOOOOOOOOOOHHH!!!!!!!!! 🤯
Save those clicks!
Tip (or Trick...) - TITLES.
If you, like me, copy and paste titles all the time, I discovered the following operation when I first started using FCP:
1) Place the cursor (or whatever it's called...) on the timeline where you want the copied/pasted title to appear.
2) Scroll to where the title is that you want to copy.
3) Select the title and copy it. (I always use Command-C.)
4) Immediately press Command-V.
The title is pasted where your cursor was placed and you are taken there. Select and edit the new title. VOILA!
I don't know if this works with other items in the same fashion, because I haven't actually stretched my mind to trying it... (Likely, everyone knows about this and I'm just spitting into the wind...)
CHEERS!
I always use Option + V to paste my titles out of habit, but Command + V works as well because it'll paste it at the level the item that was copied was at... If that makes sense. But good to know about cursor location for it!
Cool tip!
And short and sweet - haha
I got to thank my years of keynote slide making for teaching me this when I started learning how to edit lol
Why didn't you tell me!?! 🤣
What camera are you shooting on, Matthew?
This one is the Canon EOS R. I also use my Canon C300 MkII in some of my videos.
cool.. what other things can you drag and drop.. wow.
I'm gonna try it out everywhere I can...
This is huge!! 😂😂
HUGE!
Little off topic, but i would like to know, why you choose to record your audio in logic and not in FCP. I have logic, because i got it via Apple Pro Apps Bundle, but i cant find any use for it, because everything i do with audio, i can do easily in FCP. Thanks
I record voice overs in FCP using the Record Voiceover tool (I'm actually doing that right now for some Members content)... I only use Logic Pro when I'm recording a video/tutorial at my desk using my camera... Happy to clarify further.

@@matthewTobrien oh, don't get me wrong, I appreciate any tip with regard to Final Cut Pro. So thanks for all your tips along the way. They are greatly appreciated.
