    Converting to vertical footage lends itself to optimize footage shot with an AI tracker PTZ camera (Obsbot Tail Air). I shoot events where presenter slides are often more important than the perambulating speaker. Confining his centered torso into a slender box then I can have the wider slide box next to it.

    Do you or anyone else know how to compound multiple clips on the timeline at the same time? (For example, I need 50 different 9:16 vertical videos all converted to separate compound clips for the 16x9 ratio (for a screen splitter plugin), and yet I need to compound clip one clip at a time, it's extremely tedious and I can't find a way to "select all" and compound them separately.

    • @dylanjohndickerson
      @dylanjohndickerson  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks so much! Ya definitely. I have mine set up so when I need to jump cut to a scaled up clip of myself, I just hit Option E. I talk about this in another videos on my channel, but just increase the scale and position the way you like, go to your inspector window and go down to 'save effects preset'. Click that and make sure only the transform points are selected. Then once that's saved, find it in your effects browser, right click and hit 'make default video effect'. Now, every time you want to scale up, you just hit Option E and it'll scale up for you.

    Some sweet tips!Thanks. But hey wait!! Dylan, I got a tip for you… Background rendering is fine, really, just set your cache to outside your library (I have a dedicated folder on my desktop for all caches) then flush it at the end of a project, or whenever you feel like it. This works great for me, tell me what you think.

    • @dylanjohndickerson
      @dylanjohndickerson  2 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching, Bruce! The other issue though is that it slows down your computer. It's just not necessary in my opinion. If you're having trouble playing back a clip or two, just click it and hit Control R to render just those clips. And if your whole timeline has trouble playing back, might as well just transcode to ProRes Proxy. Just my opinion though!

    • @brucekennedy5274
      @brucekennedy5274 2 місяці тому

      I don’t really get any slowdowns - I guess it’s a lot about the type of work I do, short-form, often quite graphics heavy (logo, text overlays, clip stacking etc) rarely more than 10mins long. I imagine if I was cutting someone like a 1hr doc, bg-rendering off would prob be a good move.

    I don't get why people hate background render so much. If you use a lot of titles, effects or transitions often they won't play back smoothly without being rendered first. I leave it on 🤠

    • @dylanjohndickerson
      @dylanjohndickerson  2 місяці тому

      It depends on your computer. Mine play back fine. However if there is a clip that's 'heavy', so say I have tons of 3rd party plugins on it and it's having trouble playing back, I just select the clip and hit Control R to render out JUST that clip. That way the whole timeline isn't rendered out.

    hello Dylan, thank's for you'r work.
    I have a question.
    Format of my camera file is MOV, is it better if I convert these files in to apple prores before work in fcpx?
    thank' s a lot!!!

    • @dylanjohndickerson
      @dylanjohndickerson  2 місяці тому +1

      Hey Stevens! I wouldn't. There's really no need to unless your computer is having trouble playing back the footage. Then you could try transcoding the media. Just remember that that will make your libraries super massive. You'll definitely want to delete those optimized files after.
      But basically, I used to use .mov files all the time. No need to transcode unless your machine can't keep up.

    Hi Dylan...I'm 71 and trying my best to learn to shoot in, and grade, LOG on my Lumix G9II. I am shooting test clips and can't find WHERE in FCPX I can tell what color profile (LOG, CineD, etc) the clip was shot in. I have searched the internet, to no avail. Can you tell me where (or if) I can find this info? Many thanks for your great content. I have watched so many of your videos and it is a great help. Just pretend you are talking to your grandfather. Jim in Oregon

    • @dylanjohndickerson
      @dylanjohndickerson  2 місяці тому

      Hey there grandpa Jim! 😉 Well LOG footage is going to be the obvious one because it looks flat and washed out. You'll know if it's LOG. As for Cine D or other profiles, it doesn't matter that much that you know that. You only need to know if it's LOG because the grading process needs slightly different steps.
      If you're curious to learn how to color grade LOG footage and normal Rec 709 footage, you'd love my color grading course. It's from beginners but will get you to a pro level. www.fcpcolorgradingmasterclass.com

    Is there a way to organize clips in Index quickly? I will cut clips and add a marker with a description, then under index I can see them all listed. The only way I know how to organize the clips is dragging them around in the timeline. I wish you could drag them to reorder in the index on the left hand side

      @dylanjohndickerson  2 місяці тому +1

      As far as I know, there's not unfortunately. Markers or filtering by those with video effects is a good way to narrow them down.

    That show Horizon would be amazing if I could get it to work but it doesn't for some reason? Anybody else get it to work? Another problem is , I have 2 versions of FCPX, I have a 10.7.1 and 10.8 but only 10.8 does not show up when I do add FCPX when choosing app, it shows 3 versions of 10.7.1 ? Thnaks, I hope I can some how get this to work bc I hate having to go to the drop down menu and checking show Horizon every time. Mac Studio M2 and OS Ventura

    Mending cuts don't work for me. The symbol (with two brackets) just don't appear. Only left or right.

      Are you using a trial version of Final Cut? Because it does work for normal clips as well. If you have trouble figuring out how to do it, feel free to email me
      dylan@dylanjohndickerson.com
      But it is pretty simple. When a cut is made, you click it and press delete.
